A novel ternary Ag 2 CO 3 /Ag/AgNCO Z-scheme heterojunction with excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance was fabricated. The O 2 − and, h + were proved to be the photocatalytic active substances for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in Ag 2 CO 3 /Ag/AgNCO. Compared to pristine Ag 2 CO 3 and AgNCO, the enhanced photocatalytic activities of Ag 2 CO 3 /Ag/AgNCO could be attributed to the low resistance for interfacial charge transfer and desirable absorption capability. In addition, the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism is proved by the discussion of the band structure. This work could offer a new insight into the design and fabrication of advanced materials with Z-scheme structures for the efficient treatment of persistent pollutants in wastewater.

A two-step photocatalytic water splitting system, termed a “Z-scheme system”, was achieved using Zn-doped g-C 3 N 4 for H 2 evolution and BiVO 4 for O 2 evolution with Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ as a shuttle redox mediator. H 2 and O 2 were evaluated simultaneously when the doping amount of zinc was 10%. Moreover, Zn-doped (10%) g-C 3 N 4 synthesized by an impregnation method showed superior active ability to form the Z-scheme with BiVO 4 than by in-situ synthesis. X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples. It was determined that more Zn–N bonds could be formed on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 by impregnation, which could facilitate charge transfer.

The first example of an all tungsten based Z-scheme photocatalyst (composed of WO3·0.33H2O and PbWO4) has been synthesized via an ion exchange method. The composites exhibit much higher photocatalytic activities than those of individual hydrated tungsten trioxide and lead tungstate. The apparent photodegradation rate constants of RhB over the composites are more than 6 to 8 times higher than those of the two monomer components. After 30 min, the RhB can be removed almost completely by the composite, while only 30% RhB and 35% RhB can be, respectively, eliminated for the two single components. In addition, the composite photocatalyst displays excellent activity in the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO). The relationship between the two monomer components has been investigated using XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, and TEM measurements. The hydrated tungsten trioxide is formed on the surface of lead tungstate via a complex process that includes ion exchange and crystal structure rearrangement. Ion exchange occurs at the end of the (110) facet of lead tungstate. The results of photocatalytic mechanism and photodeposition Pt experiments indicate that the excellent photocatalytic activity of the composite photocatalyst is due to the advantage of its Z-scheme configuration. This study suggests that highly effective Z-scheme photocatalysts can be built by ion exchange.

A series of RGO-Cu 2 O/Bi 2 O 3 composite photocatalysts was developed by depositing Cu 2 O and Bi 2 O 3 nanocrystals on the surface of RGO via an in situ precipitation method. The Cu 2 O and Bi 2 O 3 nanocrystals distributed uniformly and separately on RGO, which favored the transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes towards an effective path. Compared with RGO-Cu 2 O and RGO-Bi 2 O 3 , the three-component RGO-Cu 2 O/Bi 2 O 3 composites presented a further improvement on the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation, which can be attributed to the construction of a Z-scheme photocatalytic system where the RGO served as a solid-state medium for the transfer of the photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of Bi 2 O 3 to the valence band of Cu 2 O.

The lack of compactness in heterojunction interfaces and poor charge separation is a great challenge in developing high-efficiency heterojunction photocatalysts . Herein, a novel Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 -BiPO 4 heterojunction was successfully prepared for the first time by epitaxial growth of BiPO 4 on the surface of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 nanosheets . The optimized Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 -BiPO 4 -0.5 increased the NO oxidation efficiency to 73.05%, surpassing pure Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 (63.45%) and BiPO 4 (8.35%). Experiments and theoretical calculations indicated that the closely contacted heterointerface between BTO and BPO promoted the generation of the built-in electric field, which led to the formation of the Z- scheme transfer pathway for the photogenerated carriers . Therefore, the separation of photogenerated carriers was facilitated while retaining high redox potential , generating more ·O 2 – and ·OH to participate in NO oxidation. Furthermore, the adsorption of NO and O 2 was enhanced by introducing BiPO 4 , further improving the photocatalytic NO oxidation performance. This work emphasizes the critical role of heterointerface in accelerating charge transfer, providing a basis for the design and construction of tightly contacted heterojunction photocatalysts .

Two-dimensional Bi2S3 is considered a better photocatalyst when combined with CdS. To deeply understand electronic structures between CdS and Bi2S3, CdS@Bi2S3 core–shell nanorods (NRs) were synthesized with a two-step hydrothermal method, and CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 composites were obtained with MoS2 nanoparticles decorated on the surface of CdS@Bi2S3 NRs. Then, the energy band alignments in CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 were constructed from XPS and UPS measurements, and dual z-scheme CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 heterostructures were confirmed from charge transfer with electron spin resonance (ESR) signals of •O2– and •OH. Finally, the photocatalytic hydrogen activities were carried out with the prepared samples. The results showed that the optimized CdS@Bi2S3 core–shell NRs have a hydrogen production rate of 4.29 mmol·h–1·g–1, which is 8.4 times higher than that of the pure CdS nanorods, and the optimized CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 heterostructure has a hydrogen production rate of 8.72 mmol·h–1·g–1, which is 17 times higher than that of the pure CdS NRs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the dual z-scheme heterostructure and full-spectrum absorption; the former is favorable for the efficient separation of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and the latter is beneficial to the production of more photogenerated carriers. The studies will be helpful to understand the electronic structures of Bi2S3 and the related heterostructures.

Bimetallic-organic frameworks and their derivatives have attracted intensive attention in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production due to their high porosity, distinctive three-dimensional structure, and favorable specific surface area. Despite these advantages, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production remains unsatisfactory owing to rapid complexation of electron-hole pairs and limited visible light utilization. Herein, in this work, the autogenous CuO–ZnO heterojunction nanoparticles are assembled on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by calcining copper-zinc bimetallic-organic frameworks. The autogenous heterojunctions offer numerous active sites and enhance electron transfer at tightly bound heterogeneous interfaces. Furthermore, RGO acts as a co-catalyst or substrate, improving photocatalytic performance with its high surface area and excellent electron transport properties. Consequently, the RGO/CuO–ZnO Z-scheme heterojunction achieves an impressive hydrogen production rate of 479.73 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 94.06 times higher than that of pristine ZnO. Overall, this work optimizes the potential of metal-organic framework-derived photocatalysts in hydrogen production and offers valuable insights into the effective construction of autogenous heterojunctions.

Developing artificial photosynthetic system with high activity is significant for long-term solar light conversion. Inspired by the natural Z-scheme photosystem, a ternary core-shell ZnIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3 /MoS 2 (ZOS) composite with double Z-scheme junction was prepared by in-situ vulcanization of MoO 3 nanosheets . Such in-situ formed intimate interfaces can overcome the high interfacial charge transfer barrier between different composites thus boosting the charge separation efficiency. The dual Z-scheme heterojunction provided dual electron transfer routes and favored the charge transfer. In addition, the ternary core-shell structure offered more spatially separated active sites which also increased the photocatalytic activity. Profiting from these strategies, the optimized ZOS-1 sample afforded 3.71 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 hydrogen evolution rate at 420 nm, which was 18.5 and 2.5 times higher than that of MoO 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively. In addition, 88% tetracycline can be eliminated in the solution within 70 min in the presence of ZOS-1 sample. This study provides an effective strategy for designing high-efficiency artificial photosynthetic systems under Z-scheme charge transfer routes in photocatalytic reactions.

A facile Z-scheme AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst with oxygen vacancies was fabricated by a water-bath method. The structural, morphological, optical and electronic properties of as-synthesized samples were systematically characterized. The oxygen vacancies were confirmed by EPR, which could optimize the band-gap of the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction and improve the photo-induced electron transfer. The optimized AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction showed excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency (82%) for tetracycline (TC). Simultaneously, E. coli was completely inactivated within 60 min due to the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction. The elevated catalytic activity of the optimal AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction was ascribed to the synergistic effect of the enhanced light absorption and effective photoinduced charge carrier separation and transfer. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction towards ofloxacin, norfloxacin and Lanasol Red 5B was 73%, 74% and 96%, respectively. The experimental factors for the degradation efficiency of TC were also studied. Furthermore, active species trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals (˙O2−) were the main reactive species, and the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism helped to improve the photocatalytic activity.

Owing to the low conversion efficiency of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ during the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process, the design of an efficient Fenton-like catalyst is still a challenge. In this work, 0D/2D Co-doped Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 (CNCFO) composite catalysts were constructed for organic pollutant degradation, where the Co-doping not only boosts the conversion efficiency of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , but also acts as active site for PMS activation. Among them, CNCFO2 showed excellent catalytic performance, where 96.4% of MO could be degraded within 45 s. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the cobalt doping promoted the cycle of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , which was responsible for the enhanced PMS activation. Meanwhile, the good stability and reusability of CNCFO2 itself provide opportunities for its potential practical applications. Based on systematical characterizations, the Z-scheme photo-Fenton mechanism was proposed. This study offers a fresh perspective on the advancement of designing highly efficient Fenton-like catalyst for applications in the field of environmental purification.

An efficient and stable LaFeO 3 @CoS Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared through the hydrothermal method (HT). Photocatalytic activity of the LaFeO 3 @CoS was assessed by activating persulfate under visible light for the degradation of tetracycline (0.1 g/L). Under the condition of 0.06 g/L of KHSO 5 (Peroxymonosulfate, PMS), the degradation efficiency of 88.7 % was achieved in 40 min using the 0.02 g/L of developed photocatalyst. The degradation kinetic constants of LaFeO 3 @CoS were 2.79 and 2.23 times higher than those of LaFeO 3 and CoS, respectively. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability over five consecutive degradation cycles. Possible degradation mechanisms and the electron transfer mechanism of the heterojunction formed by the LaFeO 3 @CoS were investigated by quenching experiments, nitrogen N₂ purging experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements and corresponding electrochemical analyses. In the LaFeO 3 @CoS/Vis/PMS system, the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway not only accelerated charge transport efficiency but also effectively spatially separated electrons and holes, enhancing the photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst. Additionally, the generation of reactive species such as 1 O 2 , O 2 • − , and SO 4 • − significantly contributed to the improved degradation efficiency of the present catalyst during the degradation process.
