Two-dimensional layered material membranes show great potential in the efficient sieving of molecules. However, balancing permeability and selectivity remains a significant challenge. In this study, ZIF-8 crystals are in situ grown on molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets exfoliated via supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) for the first time, aiming to fabricate high-permeability MoS 2 @ZIF-8 membranes. It is suggested that the dispersed ZIF-8 crystals act as spacers to alleviate the restacking of MoS 2 nanosheets. The intrinsic microporous structure of ZIF-8, together with the tortuous transport pathways within the stacked MoS 2 layer, synergistically contributes to the size-selective separation performance of the membrane. Dye rejection tests show that the MoS 2 @ZIF-8 membrane exhibits high rejection rates and water permeability for various dye molecules. For example, the membrane has a rejection rate of 99.37% and a water permeability of 76.96 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 for Congo Red, and maintains an average rejection rate of 99.30% over 24 h of continuous operation. Moreover, the membrane can efficiently remove various dyes from salt-containing wastewater, with a maximum separation factor (SF) of 179.45 with a permeability of 79.77 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 . This method provides a promising solution for treating and purifying wastewater using membrane separation technology.

Sm 2 O 3 -modified ZIF-8-derived ZnO nanoparticles were first prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. • The maximum response to 100 ppm ethanol was 210 at the operating temperature (275 °C). • The reasons for the improved gas-sensitive performance were explored. Constructing heterojunctions is recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing gas sensor performance. Rare-earth metal oxides, owing to their unique properties, can significantly improve the sensing capability of single-metal oxides. This work produced a ZnO/Sm 2 O 3 heterostructure for ethanol gas sensing via a simple one-step hydrothermal method. A static system was used to investigate the gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared sensors. Compared with the pure ZnO sensor, the ZnO/Sm 2 O 3 heterojunction sensor exhibited a significantly enhanced sensing performance toward 100 ppm ethanol. Specifically, its response increased from 130 to 210, the optimal operating temperature decreased from 295 °C to 275 °C, and the recovery time was shortened from 84 s to 17 s. In addition, the sensor demonstrated good selectivity toward ethanol over other interfering gases, as well as excellent long-term stability, while maintaining good linearity and repeatability. The material was characterized using various techniques, including XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET, UPS, and Hall-effect measurements, in terms of micromorphology, elemental composition and specific surface area, revealing cube-like structures and confirming the successful formation of an n-n heterojunction. Finally, the underlying mechanism for the enhanced gas sensing performance was discussed in detail. Download: Download high-res image (68KB) Download: Download full-size image

Developing ethanol-selective gas sensors remains challenging because structurally and chemically related volatile organic compounds (VOCs) often induce similar responses on semiconductor metal oxide surfaces. Here, we report a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-enabled strategy for reprogramming gas selectivity rather than simple response enhancement by constructing Co₃O₄@ZIF-8 core–shell nanorod arrays. The ZIF-8 layer was deposited on Co₃O₄ nanorods through a seed-assisted conversion route to regulate gas transport and interfacial adsorption. Compared with pristine Co₃O₄ sensor, ZIF-8 functionalization induced a distinct selectivity shift from acetone-preferred to ethanol-preferred sensing (8.7 toward 100 ppm ethanol at 225 °C) and improved humidity tolerance due to the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed stronger ethanol adsorption on ZIF-8 than acetone adsorption, supporting preferential ethanol enrichment within the ZIF-8 shell. This work establishes ZIF-8 functionalization as an effective route for engineering ethanol selectivity in Co₃O₄ sensors and provides insight into MOF-assisted selectivity reprogramming in MOS chemiresistive gas sensors. Owing to the complexity of the tumor microenvironment, monotherapy often suffers from inherent limitations and fails to achieve satisfactory antitumor efficacy. Therefore, multimodal collaborative therapy has become a trend. In this study, CP@ZIF-PQ/Ce6 NPs, a ZIF-90-based multimodal nanosystem loaded with copper peroxide (CP) nanoparticles, the autophagy inhibitor primaquine phosphate (PQ) and the photosensitizer Ce6, were developed. This nanosystem enables the integration of photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), oxygen generation, and autophagy inhibition. Through the combined therapeutic effects of PDT/CDT/O 2 generation/autophagy inhibition, CP@ZIF-PQ/Ce6 NPs enhance the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS), alleviate tumor hypoxia, and block the autophagy-mediated protective pathway in tumor cells. Moreover, the nanosystem exhibits dual pH- and ATP-responsive properties, allowing tumor microenvironment-triggered drug release. CP@ZIF-PQ/Ce6 NPs successfully integrate PDT, CDT, oxygen-generating therapy, and autophagy inhibition, demonstrating potent antitumor activity and favorable biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo. This study provides an innovative strategy and experimental evidence for multimodal collaborative antitumor therapy to overcome the limitations of monotherapy imposed by the tumor microenvironment. Developed an electro-assisted diffusion strategy for ZIF-8 membrane fabrication. • Electric-field-guided growth enabled defect-free and thickness-controlled ZIF-8 layers. • Secondary crystallization improved membrane integrity and lithium-ion selectivity. • ZIF-EaD membranes achieved selective Li + separation from Co 2+ and Ni 2+ ions. The rapid proliferation of lithium-ion batteries has led to a growing accumulation of end-of-life battery waste, posing serious environmental risks while intensifying demand for the recovery of critical materials such as lithium. This study proposes an electro-assisted diffusion (EaD) method for fabricating defect-free ZIF-8 (ZIF-EaD) membranes on a nylon substrate for lithium extraction from spent battery leachate. Guided by an applied electric field, the method promotes directed migration and collision of metal ions with organic ligands, resulting in a dense separation membrane with controllable thickness. The ZIF-EaD membranes fabricated under an electric field of 1.5 V exhibited a Li + flux of 1.59 × 10 −6 mmol cm −2 s −1 , with separation factors of 5.13 and 3.69 for Li + /Co 2+ and Li + /Ni 2+ , respectively. These results demonstrate an efficient and controllable strategy for preparing lithium-ion-selective membranes, offering a new technical pathway for the development of high-performance ion-selective separation membranes.

Electro-driven membranes with monovalent ion selectivity represent a promising technology for sustainable lithium (Li) recovery from spent lithium-ion battery (LIB) leachate. However, existing membranes suffer from limited Li + selectivity and low ion permeation rates. In this study, a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-embedded hydrogel electro-driven membrane was developed for selective Li + extraction via electrodialysis (ED). A poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) network-threaded ZIF (QZIF) layer was in-situ constructed within the hydrogel matrix of Kevlar aramid nanofibers (KANFs), forming a stable composite layer on a sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) substrate. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of size sieving and electrostatic repulsion, the resulting QZIF@KANF#SPSF membrane exhibited rapid Li + transport while effectively rejecting larger divalent ions (Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ). During ED at 5 mA cm −2 , the QZIF@KANF#SPSF membrane achieved a Li + permeation rate of 0.45 mol m −2 h −1 in a 25 mM Li + , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ mixed solution, with high permselectivities of 13.8, 12.2, and 10.5 for Li + /Ni 2+ , Li + /Co 2+ , and Li + /Mn 2+ , respectively. This strategy of embedding charged ZIFs within a hydrogel matrix provides a robust and scalable pathway for enhancing Li + selectivity and transport efficiency in advanced separation processes for spent LIB recycling.

In recent years, water pollution caused by oily wastewater discharged from industrial production has become increasingly serious. There was an urgent need for a simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly method to treat oily wastewater, so as to reduce and solve the water pollution problem. In this study, a layer of cellulose hydrogel was coated on stainless steel mesh (SSM) by a dipping coating method, and nanozeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) particles were grown in situ using the hydrogel as the matrix. The surface roughness of cellulose@ZIF-8@SSM was improved, and its hydration ability was enhanced. The prepared superhydrophilic-underwater superoleophobic cellulose@ZIF-8@SSM can separate different oil/water mixtures under gravity and has long-term separation ability. What is more, the oil–water separation efficiency was more than 99.997%. In addition, cellulose@ZIF-8@SSM showed good chemical and mechanical stability in acid and alkali solution immersion and sand impact tests. This work has broad application prospects and potential in the field of treating oily wastewater.

Enhancing the hydrophilicity of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) woven fabrics to expand their application in alkaline electrolysis has become a significant research focus. In this research, hydrophilic hPPS@ZIF-8 membranes were fabricated through in-situ growth method. By optimizing the growth time, the optimal conditions for the in-situ growth of ZIF-8 crystal particles on the fabric surface are determined. The in-situ growth of ZIF-8 crystals on the PPS fabric surface introduce hydrophilic groups, while their unique pore structures facilitate ion transport, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performance of the modified membrane. The findings indicate that when the in-situ growth time of ZIF-8 crystal particles is set at 12 h, the resultant hPPS@ZIF-8 membranes exhibit enhanced hydrophilicity, minimal surface resistance (0.231 Ω cm 2 ) and bubble pressure (6007 Pa). Moreover, at ambient temperature, the current density of the hPPS@ZIF-8 membrane is observed to be approximately 307 % higher than untreated PPS fabric under equivalent voltage conditions. After immersion in a 30 wt% KOH solution for 12 h, the change in the water contact angle was merely 3.5 %, and the maximum current density remained essentially unchanged. Therefore, the hydrophilic hPPS@ZIF-8 membranes have a wide application prospect in alkaline water electrolysis.

In this study, melamine sponge (MS) is modified by in-situ growth of leaf-like Co-ZIF-L without the addition of additives or surfactants . Such modified MS shows good underwater superoleophobicity because of the unique pore structure and highly rough surface of MS@Co-ZIF-L. Compared to the pristine MS, the water-wetted MS@Co-ZIF-L exhibits excellent water-oil separation for various oils (the separation efficiencies are higher than 99.2%) with good long-term stability (no decrease in flux and separation efficiency after 60 cycles of separation). Moreover, MS@Co-ZIF-L is highly effective to treat oil-water emulsions. Besides the excellent separation performance, due to the outstanding mechanical properties, MS@Co-ZIF-L can be shaped into various configurations such as membranes, filters, adsorbing foams or other forms for the oil/water separation in various situations.

The failure of titanium implants in osteoporotic patients is frequently attributed to a disrupted microenvironment characterized by excessive oxidative stress and an imbalance between bone formation and resorption. To address this, we engineered a functionalized composite scaffold (Ti/Gel/ZM) by incorporating melatonin-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles into a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel on a 3D-printed titanium alloy scaffold. This scaffold was designed to provide a pH-responsive release of zinc ions and melatonin, triggered by the acidic osteoporotic microenvironment. In vitro assays demonstrated that the scaffold effectively scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby restoring mitochondrial membrane potential and rescuing the osteogenic differentiation capacity of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) via the upregulation of Runx2, ALP, BMP2 and COL1. Simultaneously, the composite scaffold significantly inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis in RAW264.7 cells. In vivo evaluation in an ovariectomized rat model confirmed that the Ti/Gel/ZM scaffold promoted rapid osseointegration and trabecular bone regeneration, as evidenced by enhanced bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and trabecular thickness. These results suggest that the Ti/Gel/ZM composite scaffold is a promising candidate for improving the osseointegration of titanium alloy implants in osteoporotic bone.

Perovskite oxide (ABO 3 ) is a potential oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst , and its B-site is generally regarded as the active center. However, perovskite oxides suffer from poor conductivity and insufficient active sites due to severe calcination during high-temperature synthesis. To address these issues, we started from a well-demonstrated OER catalyst Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ (BSCF) and developed an approach to load abundant active sites with the exsolution of CoFe nanoparticles from parent phase BSCF. During this process, ZIF-67 has been used as the carbon source to generate highly conductive network of cobalt-doped carbon and further fabricated as BSCF/ZIF (67) -650 composite. Such hybrid catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 285 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a minor Tafel slope of 40 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH alkaline solution. The remarkably enhanced activity is attributed to the increment of active sites, oxygen vacancies and excellent conductivity. Importantly, such OER performance shows excellent stability for 200 h operation.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent chronic joint disease characterized by progressive cartilage degradation, synovial inflammation, and subchondral bone remodeling. Current pharmacotherapies are limited by poor targeting, low bioavailability, and systemic side effects. Here, we developed a zinc-based metal–organic framework (ZIF-8) loaded with dimethyl malonate (DM), a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor, for targeted OA therapy. The DM@ZIF-8 nanocomposites were synthesized via a one-step coprecipitation method and characterized using TEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis, DLS, and zeta potential measurements. The in vitro drug release profile showed pH-responsive behavior, with accelerated release under acidic conditions mimicking the inflammatory microenvironment. Cell viability and hemolysis assays demonstrated good biocompatibility. Macrophage polarization studies revealed that DM@ZIF-8 promoted M2 polarization, as indicated by increased CD206 and TGF-β expression and decreased CD86 and iNOS levels. In an OA rat model, DM@ZIF-8 significantly improved joint structure, reduced cartilage damage, and modulated inflammatory cytokines (increased IL-10/TGF-β, decreased TNF-α/iNOS). Histological and biochemical analysis confirmed no obvious systemic toxicity. Our findings suggest that DM@ZIF-8 is a promising nanoplatform for targeted OA therapy with improved efficacy and safety. In summary, this study utilizes ZIF-8 nanocarriers to deliver succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (DM) for modulating macrophage polarization in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
