A simulated sunlight-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor has been developed for quantitative analysis of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) with “signal-on” output by Hg 2+ -integrated ZnS nanocubes (Hg 2+ @ZnS NCs). Herein, hollow ZnS NCs were firstly prepared by the ZIF-8-derived soft-template method. Subsequently, Hg 2+ probing ions were doped into the porous structures of these ZnS NCs through an adsorption reaction, yielding Hg 2+ @ZnS NCs. It was observed that Hg 2+ @ZnS-based PEC sensor could exhibit slightly enhanced PEC responses over pristine ZnS, attributed to the adsorption of Hg 2+ on ZnS surface, which may modulate surface states/defects and band structures to suppress surface recombination. More importantly, after the addition of H 2 S, the in-situ growth of HgS@ZnS with a type-II heterojunction enables enhanced photocurrent response in developed sensor by promoting efficient spatial charge separation and transfer. A PEC sensing platform with exceptional sensitivity and selectivity has been established for H 2 S quantification, covering a linear range of 0.05–10 nM and a detection limit of 32 pM, which may serve as a guideline for the design of PEC sensors for real-world H 2 S analysis in complex matrices like environmental wastewater and industrial waste gas.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) is considered as a potential pathway for green synthesis of ammonia. However, the kinetic barriers of ENRR remain a tough challenge, which is imperative to design high effective electrocatalysts for accelerated activation of N N. Herein, the FeS/ZnS/ZIF-8-L with rich heterogeneous interfaces was successfully fabricated by governing the ordered lasso arrangement of Fe and Zn nodes in Fe-2MIM/ZIF-8-L precursor, where Fe and Zn were separately fixed in the confined space of ZIF-8-L and Fe-2MIM. Such intertwined Fe-2MIM/ZIF-8-L structure was beneficial to control the location and concentration of FeS and ZnS after sulfidation pyrolysis. The high-efficiency FeS/ZnS/ZIF-8-L exposed more catalytic active sites and possessed optimal electronic structure resulting in the lowered energy barrier of ENRR and the enhanced adsorption and activation of N 2 , which confirmed by experimental and theoretical characterization results. As a result, FeS/ZnS/ZIF-8-L displayed an optimal NH 3 yield rate of 89.52 μg h −1 mg −1 and Faradaic efficiency of 16.78 %, which surpassed most reported heterostructured ENRR catalysts. Our findings shed a new insight to govern the interfaces density of heterostructured electrocatalysts by predesigning the location of two metals in precursor, which can motivate an in-depth exploration to advanced catalysts for various electrocatalytic reactions.

RNA plays a crucial role in biochemical processes. RNAs with abasic sites (AP-RNA), as one of RNA lesions, will cause serious negative consequences. Efficient and sensitive detection of AP-RNA deserves but does not receive enough attention. Water-soluble uridine triphosphate (UTP)-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs), which have excellent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties, were prepared by wet-chemical method. The UTP on the surface of QDs could form a precipitation complex with amiloride (AMI) to quench the RTP. Meanwhile, abasic double-stranded RNA (AP-dsRNA) with a high affinity to AMI could dissociate AMI from the surface of UTP-QDs, resulting in RTP recovery. In this process, a highly sensitive and selective RTP-detection system for AP-dsRNA was constructed with AMI as the modulation factor and UTP-QDs as the luminescence matrix. RTP was turned off and on for the determination of AP-dsRNA, and the interference of background fluorescence and scattered light was effectively avoided during complex formation and aggregation. Steric hindrance of the conformation of AP-dsRNA provided efficient selectivity. The detection limit for AP-dsRNA was 0.86 nM, the relative standard deviation was 2.1%, and the recovery of biological samples with AP-dsRNA addition ranged from 95% to 103% at optimal conditions. The system is expected to provide new methods for environmental monitoring, early disease screening, and evaluation of gene editing efficiency.

The SnO 2 quantum dots (SnO 2 QDs)/ZnS nanosheets (ZnSNs) heterojunction was fabricated via an in-situ synthetic method at room temperature. Rhodamine B, potassium dichromate, and tetracycline were used to discuss the photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples under the visible light illumination. The photocatalytic mechanism of the as-prepared samples was also proposed. The experimental results indicate that the degradation efficiency of the as-prepared SnO 2 QDs/ZnSNs heterojunction first increases and then decreases with increasing the usage of ZnSNs. When the mass ratio of SnO 2 QDs to ZnSNs is 1: 2 in 180 min, the asprepared samples have the highest degradation efficiency of 89.1% for rhodamine B, 97.7% for potassium dichromate, and 83.8% for tetracycline, which are much higher than 51.7%, 26.8%, and 0.9% of pure SnO 2 QDs as well as 37.9%, 87.1%, and 19.1% of pure ZnSNs, respectively. After it is repeatedly degraded for 3 times, it possesses the degradation efficiency of 62.5% for rhodamine B, which increases by 200.5% in comparison with 20.8% of the pure SnO 2 QDs. Moreover, the enhanced photocatalytic performances of the as-prepared hybrids are attributed to the formation of heterojunction between the SnO 2 QDs and ZnSNs. In addition, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion radicals play major roles during the photocatalytic degradation process, while holes play a minor role.

A novel method for preparing CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots (CuInS2/ZnS QDs) with the crystal structure of sphalerite by one-pot hot injection was developed in this paper. The as-prepared core CuInS2 quantum dots (CuInS2 QDs) was uniform spherical nanoparticle with the average diameter of about 2 nm with the fluorescent quantum yields (QY) of about 2.6%. By capping a shell of ZnS on the surface of CuInS2 QDs, the formed CuInS2/ZnS QDs exhibited obvious enhanced fluorescent emission with the QY of about 20%. Intriguingly, the crystal structure of obtained CuInS2/ZnS QDs is sphalerite, which was confirmed by XRD. Considering the different terminal group between these small organic molecules, mercaptoacetic acid (TGA), thioglycerol (TGC) and mercaptoethylamine (MEA) were further selected as capping molecules to exchange the surface ligands of CuInS2/ZnS QDs. The obtained CuInS2/ZnS QDs modified with TGC exhibited excellent photostability in physiological conditions. To investigate the effect of ligand molecules on the biocompatible of CuInS2/ZnS QDs, the experiment on the cytotoxicity of CuInS2/ZnS QDs to A549 cells were conducted. The results indicated that CuInS2/ZnS QDs capped with TGC showed the lowest cytotoxicity while CuInS2/ZnS QDs capped with MEA exhibited the highest cytotoxicity among the three types of CuInS2/ZnS QDs modified with ligands with different terminal group. These results provided a sight on how to select surface ligands to modify CuInS2/ZnS QDs when CuInS2/ZnS QDs will apply in biological fields.

As a kind of serious concern environmental toxic pollutants, sulfide is widely used in various industrial processes, and generated from the process of biological metabolism. However, the sensitive, rapid and effective detection of sulfide still remains challenge. In this paper, a simple and rapid room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) method for the detection of sulfide with a high selectivity and sensitivity was proposed by using mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and Pb 2+ as a sensing system. Highly water-soluble MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs with phosphorescence emission property were successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method. We discovered that the as-prepared QDs displayed effectively phosphorescence quenching to Pb 2+ in pH 11.5 borax-NaOH buffer solution, then demonstrated remarkable phosphorescence recovery after the addition of sulfide to the QDs-Pb 2+ system. Therefore, based on the phosphorescence "off-on" behavior of MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs, a simple, sensitive and selective phosphorescence method for rapid detection of sulfide was successfully developed. The quenching and recovery of the phosphorescence of MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs have been studied in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the recovered degree of RTP intensity had a very good linear relationship with sulfide concentration in the range of 2 × 10 −7 –80 × 10 −7 mol L −1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9982, and a lower detection limit of 6.89 × 10 −8 mol L −1 . The relative standard deviations for eleven times repeated detections of 5 × 10 −6 and 8 × 10 −6 mol L −1 sulfide were 3.24% and 4.50%, respectively. The proposed method could effectively avoid the interferences of common anions, fluorescence substances and scattering light. Furthermore, it was successfully applied to detect sulfide in real water samples with satisfactory results, and the recoveries were in the range from 94.2% to 107.1%. This work will provide the basis of method for the development of fast and on-line monitoring sensors of small molecule pollutions in water.

Attention on semiconductor nanocrystals have been largely focused because of their unique optical and electrical properties, which can be applied as light absorber and luminophore. However, the band gap and structure engineering of nanomaterials is not so easy because of their finite size. Here we demonstrate an approach for preparing ternary AgInS2 (AIS), quaternary AgZnInS (AZIS), AgInS2/ZnS and AgZnInS/ZnS nanocompounds based on cation exchange. First, pristine Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) with different sizes were synthesized in one-pot, followed by the partial cation exchange between In3+ and Ag+. Changing the initial ratio of In3+ to Ag+, reaction time and temperature can control the components of the obtained AIS QDs. Under the optimized conditions, AIS QDs were obtained for the first time with a cation disordered cubic phase and high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) up to 32% in aqueous solution, demonstrating the great potential of cation exchange in the synthesis for nanocrystals with excellent optical properties. Sequentially, Zn2+ ions were incorporated in situ through a second exchange of Zn2+ to Ag+/In3+, leading to distinct results under different reaction temperature. Addition of Zn2+ precursor at room temperature produced AIS/ZnS core/shell NCs with successively enhancement of QY, while subsequent heating could obtain AZIS homogeneous alloy QDs with a successively blue-shift of PL emission. This allow us to tune the PL emission of the products from 483 to 675 nm and fabricate the chemically stable QDs core/ZnS shell structure. Based on the above results, a mechanism about the cation exchange for the ternary nanocrystals of different structures was proposed that the balance between cation exchange and diffusion is the key factor of controlling the band gap and structure of the final products. Furthermore, photostability and in vitro experiment demonstrated quite low cytotoxicity and remarkably promising applications in the field of clinical diagnosis.

8-Hydroxyquinolines (HQs) functionalized ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) with an amine-capping layer (ZnS–NH 2 –Q NPs) were prepared by a ligand-exchange process. FT-IR, XRD , NMR, TEM and fluorescence spectrometer were used to characterize the novel ZnS–NH 2 –Q NPs. Upon the addition of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), the amino groups on the surface of ZnS–NH 2 –Q NPs can bind TNT molecule from solution by forming Meisenheimer complex. This complex absorbs the green part of visible light, and strongly suppresses the fluorescence emission of the ZnS–NH 2 –Q NPs through Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). The observed linear fluorescence intensity response for TNT in the range of 0–1.89 μM allows the quantitative detection TNT, with a detection limit down to 10 nM.

The interactions between quantum dots (QDs) and biological systems have attracted increasing attention due to concerns on possible toxicity of the nanoscale materials. The biological effects of CdSe QDs and CdSe/ZnS QDs with nearly identical hydrodynamic size on Saccharomyces cerevisiae were investigated via microcalorimetric, spectroscopic and microscopic methods, demonstrating a toxic order CdSe > CdSe/ZnS QDs. CdSe QDs damaged yeast cell wall and reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential. Noteworthy, adhesion of QDs to the yeast cell surface renders this work a good example of interaction site at cell surface, and the epitaxial coating of ZnS could greatly reduce the toxicity of Cd-containing QDs. These results will contribute to the safety evaluation of quantum dots, and provide valuable information for design of nanomaterials.

Manganese-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) are promising candidates for multi-channel sensing analysis due to their multi-dimensional optical properties. In this study, we integrated amino-silane and ionic liquid co-modified Mn-ZnS QDs and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) into optosensing nanoparticles to provide triple-dimensional optical response signals and combined them with chemometrics for the analysis of multiple pesticide residues . Through the exploration and optimization of a series of conditions, fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence, and ultraviolet−visible combined with chemometrics were used for the discrimination and recognition of multiple pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables. The ionic liquid of 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate was used to modify Mn-ZnS QDs to improve the optical response and enrichment of pesticide adsorption sites, which were also synergistically enhanced by the COF support. This is a potential method to discriminate pesticides efficiently and enables fast and reliable analysis of pesticides in the agricultural and food industries.

Abnormal lactic acid (LA) enantiomeric excess (ee) in biofluids is closely associated with various intestinal diseases. Here, we report a chiral-label-free nonplasmonic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform using a ZIF-8/ZnS heterojunction that enables direct quantification of LA enantiomers and their ee values in raw human urine through a charge-transfer-driven chiral recognition mechanism. Our findings indicate that an enantioselective hydrogen bonding between 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPy) probes and LA enantiomers induces differential charge-transfer effects within the ZIF-8/ZnS@4-MPy system, evidenced by the selective enhancement of specific vibrational modes in the SERS spectra of 4-MPy and enantiomer-specific changes in the fluorescence lifetime of ZnS. This innovative system integrates signal amplification and stereoselectivity without the use of noble metals or chiral modifiers, overcoming critical limitations associated with the complexity of preparing chiral plasmonic substrates. The platform achieves ultrasensitive detection limits (10 nM), linear response to ee values (R2 = 0.98), high measurement precision (RSD < 8.28%, n = 20), long-term stability (28-day), and clinical-grade accuracy against enzymatic assays (RMSEP = 1.97). This work presents an efficient, noninvasive method for the analysis of chiral metabolites in urine, while establishing a novel direction for plasmon-free SERS chiral sensing.

As one of the most widely used organophosphorus pesticides, chlorpyrifos (CPF) is toxic to humans. However, the rapid, effective and sensitive detection of CPF is still a challenge. In this paper, a novel molecularly imprinted phosphorescent sensor with a core–shell structure (Mn:ZnS QDs@ZIF-8@MIP) using Mn:ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as phosphorescent emitters was prepared for the highly sensitive and selective detection of CPF, and a simple and rapid room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) detection method for CPF was proposed. For the prepared Mn:ZnS QDs@ZIF-8@MIP, Mn:ZnS QDs had good phosphorescence emission characteristics, ZIF-8 as support materials was used to improve the dispersibility of Mn:ZnS QDs, and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) on the surface of ZIF-8 was used to improve the selectivity of Mn:ZnS QDs for CPF. Under the optimal response conditions, the RTP intensity of Mn:ZnS QDs@ZIF-8@MIP showed a rapid response to CPF (less than 5 min), the RTP intensity ratio of P0/P had a good linear relationship with the concentration of CPF in the range of 0–80 μM, and the detection limit of this method was 0.89 μM with the correlation coefficient of 0.99. Moreover, this simple and rapid method has been successfully used to detect CPF in real water samples with satisfactory results, and the recoveries ranged from 92% to 105% with a relative standard deviation of less than 1%. This method combines the advantages of phosphorescence emission and molecular imprinting, and greatly reduces the potential interferences of competitive substances, background fluorescence and scattered light, which opens up a broad prospect for the highly sensitive and selective detection of pollutants in water based on molecularly imprinted phosphorescent sensors.
