Angiogenesis is a fundamental prerequisite for functional tissue regeneration, and biomaterials that drive endogenous vascularization hold immense translational potential for treating tissue defects, organ damage, and ischemic diseases. Herein, gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and chitosan methacryloyl (CSMA) were synthesized via a copolymerization-based modification method. Hydrogel microspheres were prepared by emulsification, followed by cross-linking through photoinitiator-induced radical polymerization under UV light. Combined with freeze-drying, size-tunable porous GelMA/CSMA composite microspheres (G/CMS) were fabricated. The as-prepared G/CMS establish a favorable pro-regenerative microenvironment by integrating size-dependent mechanical feedback and charge-mediated cellular interactions. Specifically, CSMA incorporation imparted a positive surface charge, enhancing cellular affinity, while smaller diameters amplified mechanical stimuli promoting adhesion via mechanotransduction. In vitro, the optimized formulation (G/CMS-B) significantly promoted the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and upregulated key angiogenic genes (VEGF, ANG, KDR) without exogenous growth factors. In vivo, subcutaneous implantation and hindlimb ischemia models confirmed accelerated neovascularization and blood flow recovery. The developed G/CMS exhibited excellent biocompatibility, controllable degradability, injectability, and excellent elastic recovery. This synergistic platform effectively modulates physicochemical cues to promote vascularization, offering a promising, cost-effective strategy for regenerative medicine.

Liposomes, as effective drug delivery systems, face limitations in their low efficiency of traditional preparation methods and inherent physical instability. In this study, we systematically compared two strategies based on Flash Nanoprecipitation (FNP) technology for the rapid and controllable preparation of chitosan hybrid liposomes. We hypothesize that the “one-step” FNP method, which mixed chitosan and lipid solutions simultaneously, potentially enabled direct co-assembly between chitosan and lipid molecules, so that chitosan molecules likely embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, resulting in liposomes with more uniform structure and smaller particle size (∼70 nm). Meanwhile, the “two-step” FNP method, which mixed chitosan with preformed liposomes, likely yielded a core-shell structure through chitosan adsorption onto the liposome surface. The one-step FNP prepared particles exhibit excellent long-term storage stability and resistance to pH and ionic strength variations, likely due to the steric effect provided by the embedded polymer chains. To investigate the drug loading capability of FNP prepared chitosan-liposomes, we encapsulated an antifungal drug, fluconazole, into these hybrid nanoparticles. Compared to the free drug, the drug-loaded liposomes not only achieved sustained release, but also reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration against Candida albicans by an order of magnitude. This study demonstrates that FNP technology, particularly the one-step strategy, provides a robust platform for constructing polymer hybrid liposomes, showing potential for enhancing the delivery and functionality of poorly soluble drugs.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely used as inorganic UV filters, yet their photocatalytic activity and resulting phototoxicity raise serious safety issues. Here, we report a Pickering double emulsion templating strategy for constructing chitosan-based porous microspheres encapsulating TiO2 NPs (TiO2@CS-PMs), with controllable microstructures and mass loading of TiO2 NPs. The oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion template confines TiO2 NPs within a cross-linked porous polymer skeleton. Structural confinement, combined with the antioxidant capacity of chitosan (CS), greatly reduces UV-induced reactive oxygen species generation of TiO2 NPs. In vitro assays reveal that TiO2@CS-PMs have good biocompatibility and significantly lower phototoxicity to HaCaT cells than naked TiO2 NPs. The porous architecture promotes optical confinement, and the encapsulation causes interfacial interactions between TiO2 NPs and the CS matrix, resulting in broadened and enhanced UV attenuation. Sunscreen incorporating TiO2@CS-PMs exhibits higher sun protection factors and cellular photoprotection at lower TiO2 NPs doses, while the CS matrix provides antibacterial activity. This work reveals Pickering double emulsion templating porous microstructure as a versatile platform for managing particle photochemistry, providing insights into the development of safer and multifunctional UV filters.

Phosphoric acid (PA)-doped membranes have emerged as promising electrolyte candidates for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). Nevertheless, their commercial adoption has been limited by durability challenges, particularly PA leaching. Herein, we developed composite proton-exchange membranes by blending phosphonated polyborosiloxane (PA-PBS) with chitosan (CS). The phosphonic groups were grafted onto polyborosiloxane chains via N-C-P bonds, which effectively reduces proton carrier loss. The microporous structure of membranes provides channels for internal water transfer. The membranes exhibit 3.5% weight loss at 150 °C. The membrane with the optimal PA ratio (PA:APTES = 2:1) achieves a proton conductivity of up to 67 mS/cm at 140 °C, and a maximum single-cell output power density of 435.1 mW/cm 2 at 140 °C, demonstrating its potential for high-temperature, low-humidity applications.

The repair of jawbone defects faces critical challenges, such as the mechanical-bioactivity imbalance and limited bioactivity of traditional scaffold materials. This study proposes a “mechanical reinforcement–bio-mineralization” synergistic strategy to construct a chitin nanowhiskers (CHWs)/octacalcium phosphate (OCP) co-modified chitosan (CS) composite hydrogel (CS/CHWs-OCP) and systematically investigates its bone regeneration efficacy. Results demonstrate the successful fabrication of CS/CHWs-OCP hydrogels with gradient OCP loading (3%–12% wt). The hydrogels exhibit three-dimensional interconnected porous structures, favorable swelling properties, and effective protein loading/sustained-release capabilities. In vitro experiments reveal that CS/CHWs-OCPs significantly promote osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and angiogenic differentiation of EA.hy926 cells, with the 12 wt% OCP group showing the highest alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. Micro-CT 3D reconstruction and histological analysis demonstrate that the 12 wt% OCP group exhibits optimal calvarial defect repair capacity, with its new bone volume fraction (BV/TV: 57.2 ± 10.2%) at 8 weeks being significantly superior to both the blank control and OCP-free hydrogel groups. In conclusion, the developed CS/CHWs-OCP hydrogel provides an effective solution for bone defect regeneration.

PURPOSE The impact of chitosan (Ch) surface modification on the osseointegration of niobia-modified yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y,Nb-TZP) implants was assessed using a rabbit tibia model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Y,Nb-TZP and SLA discs and implants were prepared and coated with Ch of 95% degree of deacetylation (DDA). MC3T3-E1 cells and human gingival fibroblasts were cultured onto discs (n = 3) for cell proliferation, adhesion, osteogenic differentiation and gene expression analysis. Specimen surface characteristics were assessed using scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Eight rabbits underwent tibial implant placement and were euthanized at 2 and 8 weeks after surgery (n = 4). Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area (BA) were quantified through histomorphometric evaluation. One-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test was used for statistical analysis ( P < .05) unless otherwise specified. RESULTS Ch-coated Y,Nb-TZP discs supported cell attachment, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation in vitro , with increased osteogenic and early focal adhesion gene expression, compared with uncoated controls. However, in vivo evaluation in rabbit tibiae showed no improvement in bone-to-implant contact or bone area around Ch-modified implants relative to uncoated Y,Nb-TZP or SLA controls, and osseointegration did not occur in the Ch-coated groups. CONCLUSION. Although Ch promoted osteogenic activity in vitro , these effects did not translate in vivo , and the coating failed to enhance osseointegration on Y,Nb-TZP implants. This gap underscores the complexity of host responses and the need to refine Ch properties for further evaluation under clinically relevant conditions.

AKDSC reduces the water sensitivity of starch via hydrolysis condensation reaction. • AKDSC enhances the interaction and networking between CH and SL. • The CH/SL- AKDSC exhibits excellent barrier and mechanical properties. • The CH/SL- AKDSC effectively extends the shelf life of cherry tomatoes. To address the environmental pollution caused by petroleum-based plastic packaging, the development of high-performance biodegradable films has become a key research focus in the field of food packaging. In this study, hydrophobically modified starch (AKDSC) was prepared via the esterification reaction of alkyl ketene dimer and subsequently introduced into a chitosan/sodium lignosulfonate (CH/SL) composite system, successfully constructing a multifunctional composite film (CH/SL-AKDSC). The structural characterization results indicated the formation of a denser hydrogen bond network between the phenolic hydroxyl/amino groups in CH/SL and the hydroxyl groups in AKDSC. The performance tests showed that the film exhibited a water contact angle of 105.9°, an oxygen transmission rate as low as 1.18 g/(m 2 ·d), and an ultraviolet shielding rate of over 99%. In a 10-day cherry tomato preservation experiment, the CH/SL-AKDSC film demonstrated good preservation effects, highlighting its practical application potential in green and efficient food packaging. A major cause of marine corrosion is sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Traditional chemicals may pose an environmental threat to this sector. Therefore, this research aims to develop eco-friendly alternatives to biocides and corrosion inhibitors. This work successfully modified chitosan, a natural and biodegradable biopolymer, into cationic and non-ionic surfactants. H 1 NMR, FTIR, and elemental analysis characterized the modified compounds. Mixed SRB culture was isolated from rust samples collected from steel immersed in a coastal area in Qingdao, China. Various techniques were used to evaluate the biological activity and corrosion protection provided by the newly modified chitosan surfactants in both abiotic and biotic environments, and their surface parameters in an aqueous solution were studied. SEM was used to display the surface morphology of the carbon steel; corrosion products were analyzed by EDS; surface topography and pitting were visualized by AFM; moreover, TEM was used to investigate the biocidal effect on the bacterial cell wall. Based on surface and thermodynamic calculations, the two surfactants exhibited adsorption behavior at the interface first, followed by aggregation in the bulk of the solution. The findings indicate that the newly modified chitosan-based surfactant displays significant corrosion protection over carbon steel and high antimicrobial activity against the isolated bacteria.

To address the prevailing issue of arsenic contamination in water bodies, a novel composite microsphere (Fe-CB) was developed for the effective removal of As(V) ions from aqueous solutions. This microsphere was prepared using a sol–gel-titration-freeze-drying method, with chitosan and ferric chloride as raw materials, polyethyleneimine as a modifier and glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. The effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial heavy metal concentration, and contact time on the performance of the adsorbent were investigated by a series of adsorption experiments. It was showed that pH played a significant role in determining the adsorption efficiency, while temperature had a relatively minor influence. The adsorption isothermal of As(V) on Fe-CB was best described by Langmuir isotherm model, whereas the dynamic adsorption process fitted the pseudo-second-order or secondary kinetic model well. Notably, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 80.97 mg/g. Furthermore, regeneration experiments demonstrated that Fe-CB maintained a regeneration rate of over 85% even after five cycles, highlighting its excellent recyclability. This study underscores the potential of Fe-CB as an efficient and reusable adsorbent for the removal of As(V) ions from contaminated waters.

Chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) are under increasing investigation for the delivery of therapeutic proteins, such as vaccines, interferons, and biologics. A large number of studies have been taken on the characteristics of CS-NPs, and very few of these studies have focused on the microstructure of protein-loaded NPs. In this study, we prepared the CS-NPs by an ionic gelation method, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein. Dynamic high pressure microfluidization (DHPM) was utilized to post-treat the nanoparticles so as to improve the uniformity, repeatability and controllability. The BSA-loaded NPs were then characterized for particle size,Zetapotential, morphology, encapsulation efficiency (EE), loading capacity (LC), and subsequent release kinetics. To improve the long-term stability of NPs, trehalose, glucose, sucrose, and mannitol were selected respectively to investigate the performance as a cryoprotectant. Furthermore, trehalose was used to obtain re-dispersible lyophilized NPs that can significantly reduce the dosage of cryoprotectants. Multiple spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize BSA-loaded NPs, in order to explain the release process of the NPs in vitro. The experimental results indicated that CS and Tripolyphosphate pentasodium (TPP) spontaneously formed the basic skeleton of the NPs through electrostatic interactions. BSA was incorporated in the basic skeleton, adsorbed on the surface of the NPs (some of which were inlaid on the NPs), without any change in structure and function. The release profiles of the NPs showed high consistency with the multispectral results. Keywords:characteristics;cryoprotection evaluation;dynamic high pressure microfluidization;chitosan nanoparticles

Glutaraldehyde cross-linked chitosan-coated Fe3O4 nanocomposites (MCNPs) were successfully synthesized for the removal of methyl orange (MO) from wastewater. Experimental conditions such as the pH, cation surfactant dosage, nanoadsorbent dosage, and ionic strength were also investigated. Kinetics date was better fit by a pseudo-second-order model, indicating that adsorption was the rate-limiting step. The Freundlich models (R2 = 0.9794) fit the experimental data better than the Langmuir models, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 758 mg g–1. The values of the Gibbs free energy (ΔG° = −7.27 kJ mol–1), enthalpy (ΔH° = 0.001 kJ mol–1), and entropy (ΔS° = 23.58 J mol–1) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic process of MO adsorption. The prepared MCNPs showed 96–98% adsorption of MO by adding 0.2 mg of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to form mixed hemimicelles and can be easily regenerated with a 0.1 mol L–1 HCl solution.

Selective determination of aquatic chromium is critically important because of the dramatic differences in health and environment impacts by trivalent and hexavalent forms of chromium; however, it is challenging. In this work, for the first time, a nonconjugated polymer fluorophore (GCPF) was synthesized by cross-linking chitosan with glutaraldehyde via Schiff base reactions and systematically investigated for selective determination of Cr(VI). The results revealed that the synthesized GCPF exhibited excellent photostability and water solubility. More importantly, GCPF possessed dramatically enhanced fluorescence intensity originated from the n−π* transitions of the Schiff base subfluorophore groups (e.g., C═N) that can be selectively and sensitively quenched by Cr(VI) through oxidative damages to C═N group. An effective EDTA masking agent approach was employed to minimize ionic interferences. In the presence of high concentration of interference ions including Cr(III), the quenching GCPF fluorescence is capable of selectively determining Cr(VI) within a concentration range up to 50 μM and a detection limit of 0.22 μM. The analytical performance of GCPF was also confirmed by analyzing real surface water and industrial samples.
