Highly conductive and ultra-durable electronic textiles via covalent immobilization of carbon nanomaterials on cotton fabric

Junshuo Cui,Shuxue Zhou

Graphene and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are promising candidates for the fabrication of flexible electronic textiles (E-textiles) due to their light weight and chemical stability. However, common issues of the carbon-based E-textiles such as low electrical conductivity, poor durability, and tedious fabrication processes still exist at present. In this study, fabrics with low sheet resistance and ultra-durability were fabricated using a simple dip-coating approach. A self-cross-linkable dispersant, possessing several silanol groups, was used for preparing graphene and MWCNTs dispersions. After a dip-coating/drying process, covalent networks were formed across the coating layer, which firmly immobilized graphene and MWCNTs on the fabric surface. Conductive fabrics with a sheet resistance of 33.2 Ω sq−1 and 29.8 Ω sq−1 were obtained using MWCNTs and graphene as carbon nanomaterials, respectively. Their conductivities remained almost unchanged after washing and sonication in water and various organic solvents. The tensile strength of the fabric significantly improved after the incorporation of graphene or MWCNTs on its surface. Excellent stretch sensing and electric heating performances were also revealed for the nanocarbon-coated textiles.

Highly efficient immobilization of uranium(VI) from aqueous solution by phosphonate-functionalized dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS)

Peipei Yang,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Rongrong Chen,Rumin Li,Xuefeng Bai,Jun Wang

A novel phosphonate assisted fabrication dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS)-based adsorbing material was successfully synthesis via organic modification with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550), epichlorohydrin (ECH) and phytic acid (PA) on the grounds of hard-soft-acid-base theory, in which organic phosphorous can be applied for efficient chelating uranium(VI) (U(VI)). The adsorption properties can be evaluated by setting a series parameters (pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial U(VI) concentration). It is clear that uranium as a “hard” lewis acid can easily form chelating bond with “hard” donor-ligands so that as-papered PA-DFNS has an excellent adsorption capacity (q m  = 1106 mg g −1 , 298.15 K), which exhibits a 163% increment compared with that of original DNFS under the same condition. In the meantime, the adsorption equilibrium time of PA-DNFS (t = 60 min) was shortened by 33% compared with that of pristine DNFS. Besides, the PA-DFNS exhibited good removal efficiency and stability under the 0.1 M HNO 3 after 6 cycles, extending the application of PA-DFNS in the field of adsorption.

Immobilization of Cationic Titanium Dioxide (TiO2+) on Electrospun Nanofibrous Mat: Synthesis, Characterization, and Potential Environmental Application

Deb Hridam,Xiao Shili,Morshed Mohammad Neaz,Al Azad Shamim

We report a facile approach to fabrication and characterization of cationic titanium dioxide (TiO 2 + ) on poly (vinyl alcohol)/poly (acrylic acid) (PVA/PAA) composite electro-spun nanofibrous mat. The aim of this study is to develop a “functional electrospun nanofibrous mat” as a sustainable approach to superior photocatalytic degradation of organic colorants. For that, the PVA/PAA nanofibrous mat was prepared by electrospinning of PVA and PAA solution according to an aspect ratio of 1:1 and later water stability was induced by the thermal cross linking at an elevated temperature of 145 °C for 30 minute. By means of electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, cationic titanium dioxide (TiO 2 + , ~19 nm) was immobilized on the surface of the water stable nanofibrous mat. As functionalized composited nanofibrous mat was characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Superior competency of the functionalized nanofibrous mat towards photocatalytic degradation of organic dye (methyl blue) in aqueous solution was observed by using UV-visible spectrophotometer with quantitative measuring method. The result indicates a complete degradation of methyl blue within 40 mins and superior reusability upto 5 cycles application. The study signifies the prospect of using electrospun nanofibers to manipulate the catalytic activity, which could be a foundation for further rational design of various composite nanofibrous materials.

A Sensitive DNA Biosensor Using Graphene Oxide as the Multi-Site Platform for Probe DNA Immobilization

Feng Gao,Xili Cai,Hidekazu Tanaka,Qionghua Zhu,Fei Gao,Qingxiang Wang

An ultrasensitive DNA biosensor was constructed in this work by using graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) as the multi-site platform for probe DNA immobilization. First, L-cysteine (L-cys) was self-assembled on a gold electrode surface based on the Au-S chemistry. Then the GONs and amino modified probe DNA was covalently grafted to L-cys/AuE surface in turn, with the aid of 1-(3-Dimethylanminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-Hydroxy succinimide (NHS). The layer upon layer assembly process was characterized with atomic force microscopy and electrochemical methods. Due to the nano-size effect and multiple site characteristic of GONs, the immobilization density of the probe DNA was determined to be as high as 5.72 × 10−10 mol cm−2 using methylene blue as the redox probe. The hybridization experiments showed that the biosensor can quantitatively detect target DNA in a wide range from 1.0 × 10−15 M to 1.0 × 10−9 M with a detection limit of 5.0 × 10−16 M. The selectivity experiments showed that the sensing system could accurately discriminate the complementary sequence from the base mismatched and non-complementary sequences.

Facile preparation of porous magnetic polydopamine microspheres through an inverse replication strategy for efficient enzyme immobilization

Pingping Han,Zhongyi Jiang,Xiaoli Wang,Xueyan Wang,Shaohua Zhang,Jiafu Shi,Hong Wu

An inverse replication method based on porous CaCO3 templates was developed to fabricate porous magnetic polymer microspheres (PMMSs) composed of biocompatible polydopamine and magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The preparation procedure involved the synthesis of Fe3O4@CaCO3 templates, infiltration and spontaneous polymerization of dopamine in template pores and finally the mild removal of templates. The particle size, the surface morphology and the pore structure (e.g., average pore size, pore volume, surface area, etc.) of porous PMMSs were facilely tailored by altering the templates. The as-prepared polydopamine microspheres PMMSs were applied to covalently immobilize YADH for catalyzing the conversion of formaldehyde to methanol. In comparison to the enzyme-conjugated PDA-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (PMNPs), the immobilized enzyme on porous PMMSs exhibited remarkably enhanced activity (specific activity: 162.3 U mg−1 enzyme vs. 97.6 U mg−1 enzyme; methanol yield: 95.5% vs. 57.1%; initial reaction rate: 0.15% s−1vs. 0.08% s−1), and desirable thermal/pH/recycling/storage stabilities, and particularly, easy separation from the bulk solution by an external magnetic field.

Graphene oxide-based Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a novel scaffold for the immobilization of porcine pancreatic lipase

Yongbo Shao,Tao Jing,Jingzhi Tian,Yongjie Zheng

Nano- and hybrid materials have recently emerged as a new approach for improving enzyme activity and stability, and are suitable for commercial applications. In this paper, graphene oxide-based magnetic hybrids were prepared successfully. A chloropropyl-functionalized graphene oxide decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles was made, denoted as CPS/GO-Fe3O4@MCM-41. This was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, thermogravimetry and N2 adsorption/desorption. Then, porcine pancreas lipase (PPL) was immobilized onto the graphene oxide-based magnetic nanoparticles via covalent bonding. The results show that the novel supporting material CPS/GO-Fe3O4@MCM-41 was the best for PPL immobilization compared to two other nanomaterials (GO-Fe3O4@MCM-41 and GO-Fe3O4). The supporting material CPS/GO-Fe3O4@MCM-41 exhibited enhanced immobilization efficiency (up to 98%), maximum relative activity (up to 97.9%), high stability and reusability (85% after 56 d and 87% after 10 cycles respectively, both at 30 °C). Additionally, it offered some other advantages, such as easy recycling and reuse, complying with the requirements of green chemistry. Therefore, it is proposed that CPS/GO-Fe3O4@MCM-41 provides a new approach for commercial applications.

Predicting the right spacing between protein immobilization sites on self-assembled monolayers to optimize ligand binding

Javier Batista Perez,Deependra Tyagi,Mo Yang,Loany Calvo,Rolando Perez,Ernesto Moreno,Jinsong Zhu

Self-assembled monolayers designed to immobilize capture antibodies are usually prepared using a mixture of functional and inactive linkers. Here, using low molar ratios (1:1 to 1:100) of the two linkers resulted in loss of binding capability of the anti-EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) antibody nimotuzumab, as assessed by surface plasmon resonance imaging. We then developed a simple theoretical model to predict the optimal surface density of the functional linker, taking into account the antibody size and linker diameter. A high (1:1000) dilution of the functional linker yielded the best results. As an advantage, this approach does not require chemical modification of the protein.

Polydopamine-mediated immobilization of phenylboronic acid on magnetic microspheres for selective enrichment of glycoproteins and glycopeptides

Zheng Jiangnan,Lin Zian,Zhang Lan,Yang Huanghao

In this work, we demonstrate for the first time, a method to synthesize phenylboronic acid-Fe 3 O 4 @polydopamine (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-PBA) magnetic microspheres via the combination of mussel-inspired polydopamine coating and click chemistry. Uniform-size and core-shell structured Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-PBA magnetic microspheres with a core diameter of ∼240 nm and a shell thickness of ∼13 nm were obtained as identified by the characterization of the morphology, structure and composition of the synthesized microspheres. We evaluated the selectivity and binding capacity of the Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-PBA magnetic microspheres by using standard glycoproteins (ovalbumin, immunoglobulin G and catalase) and nonglycoproteins (human serum albumin, bovine hemoglobin, myoglobin, lysozyme, and ribonuclease A) as model proteins. Adsorption experiments, SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated that the Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-PBA magnetic microspheres had much high binding capacity and selectivity for glycoproteins/glycopeptides compared to nonglycoproteins/nonglycopeptides. In addition, the practicability of the Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-PBA magnetic microspheres was further assessed by selective capture of glycoproteins from healthy human serum. The good results demonstrated its potential in glycoproteome analysis.

Immobilization of superoxide dismutase on Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid modified electrode surface for superoxide anion detection

Xiang Zhu,Xiangheng Niu,Hongli Zhao,Jie Tang,Minbo Lan

Monitoring of reactive oxygen species like superoxide anion (O 2 ∙− ) turns to be of increasing significance considering their potential damages to organism. In the present work, we fabricated a novel O 2 ∙− electrochemical sensor through immobilizing superoxide dismutase (SOD) onto a Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid modified electrode surface . The Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid was synthesized via a facile one-step alcohol-reduction process, and well characterized by transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The immobilization of SOD was accomplished using a simple drop-casting method, and the performance of the assembled enzyme-based sensor for O 2 ∙− detection was systematically investigated by several electrochemcial techniques. Thanks to the specific biocatalysis of SOD towards O 2 ∙− and the Pt–Pd/MWCNTs – promoted fast electron transfer at the fabricated interface, the developed biosensor exhibits a fast, selective and linear amperometric response upon O 2 ∙− in the concentration scope of 40–1550   μM ( R 2 =0.9941), with a sensitivity of 0.601   mA   cm −2   mM −1 and a detection limit of 0.71   μM ( S / N =3). In addition, the favorable biocompatibility of this electrode interface endows the prepared biosensor with excellent long-term stability (a sensitivity loss of only 3% over a period of 30 days). It is promising that the proposed sensor will be utilized as an effective tool to quantitatively monitor the dynamic changes of O 2 ∙− in biological systems.

Polydopamine-supported immobilization of covalent-organic framework-5 in capillary as stationary phase for electrochromatographic separation

Tao Bao,Pingxiu Tang,Deying Kong,Zhenkun Mao,Zilin Chen

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are attractive materials for their fascinating properties, such as rigid structures, exceptional thermal stabilities, low densities, and permanent porosity with specific surface areas, which indicate potential for application in chromatography similar to related metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, the utilization of COFs in analytical chemistry is far behind as compared to that of the MOFs due to the challenging work of their immobilization. Here, we have successfully demonstrated the growth of the boron COF-5 on the inner wall of the fused silica capillary by a developed polydopamine-supported method. Combined with the layer-by-layer strategy, multilayer COF-5-coated capillary was obtained. The formation of COF-5 on polydopamine-coated substrate has been confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. A novel stationary phase of COF-5 was developed on the basis of successful growth of COF-5 on polydopamine for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). Baseline separation of neutral, acidic and basic analytes was achieved on multilayer COF-5-coated capillary column. The fabricated capillary columns showed high column efficiency (154,060 plates/m for methylbenzene), excellent stability and repeatability. The precision (relative standard deviation (RSD), n   =   3) of retention time, peak height, and peak area for tested neutral compounds were in the range of 1.2–1.3%, 1.8–4.2%, and 0.9–2.4%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it was the first demonstration that COF-5 was developed as a novel stationary phase.

Immobilization of Ziegler–Natta Catalyst for Ethylene Polymerization on Macropores SiO2 with an Open-Framework Structure

Bing Xue,Lei Hui,Huaqin Yang,Yulai Zhao,Linxi Hou,Wei Li

A macroporous SiO2 (Macro-SiO2), which has uniformed macropores, an open-framework structure, and thin walls, was synthesized to support Ziegler–Natta catalysts. The immobilization behaviors of the Ziegler–Natta catalysts inside the Macro-SiO2 were investigated. Notable agglomerations of δ-MgCl2/titanium complex were observed because of the unconstrained environment of the Macro-SiO2. A highly superficial Ti content and a heterogeneously chemical structure of Ti active sites were thus achieved inside the Macro-SiO2. The ethylene polymerization results revealed that the Macro-SiO2/MgCl2/TiCl4 exhibited much higher catalytic activity (i.e., 12.1 × 106 g PE·(mol Ti·h)−1 or 17.8 × kg PE·(g cat·h)−1) than that of the traditional 955-SiO2 supported catalyst (i.e., 2.0 × 106 g PE·(mol Ti·h)−1 or 2.7 × kg PE·(g cat·h)−1). Finally, the fragmentation behavior of Macro-SiO2/MgCl2/TiCl4 was investigated during the polymerization. This unconstrained environment of Macro-SiO2 afforded fewer resistances to the diffusion of reactants and also the polymer growth.

Developing an Efficient and General Strategy for Immobilization of Small Molecules onto Microarrays Using Isocyanate Chemistry

Chenggang Zhu,Xiangdong Zhu,James P. Landry,Zhaomeng Cui,Quanfu Li,Yongjun Dang,Lan Mi,Fengyun Zheng,Yiyan Fei

Small-molecule microarray (SMM) is an effective platform for identifying lead compounds from large collections of small molecules in drug discovery, and efficient immobilization of molecular compounds is a pre-requisite for the success of such a platform. On an isocyanate functionalized surface, we studied the dependence of immobilization efficiency on chemical residues on molecular compounds, terminal residues on isocyanate functionalized surface, lengths of spacer molecules, and post-printing treatment conditions, and we identified a set of optimized conditions that enable us to immobilize small molecules with significantly improved efficiencies, particularly for those molecules with carboxylic acid residues that are known to have low isocyanate reactivity. We fabricated microarrays of 3375 bioactive compounds on isocyanate functionalized glass slides under these optimized conditions and confirmed that immobilization percentage is over 73%.Keywords:high-throughput screening;small-molecule microarrays;surface functionalization;label-free optical biosensor
