ZIF-8@GO composites incorporated polydimethylsiloxane membrane with prominent separation performance for ethanol recovery

Tengyang Zhu,Sheng Xu,Fen Yu,Xi Yu,Yan Wang

In this study, ZIF-8@GO composites with continuous inner channels for ethanol molecules were prepared by the in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets , and filled into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to fabricate PDMS/ZIF-8@GO mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol recovery via pervaporation . The as-prepared ZIF-8@GO composites and PDMS/ZIF-8@GO MMMs were characterized by various techniques. The results showed that ZIF-8 nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of GO nanosheets and the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8@GO composites was stronger than GO due to the surface modification of GO by hydrophobic ZIF-8. Moreover, ZIF-8@GO composites as the filler not only exhibited the excellent compatibility with PDMS but also showed the good dispersion in PDMS matrix as compared to ZIF-8 nanoparticles. Therefore, ZIF-8@GO-based MMMs showed better separation performance than ZIF-8-based MMMs. The pervaporation performance of PDMS/ZIF-8@GO MMMs was studied by adjusting the filler type, particle loading, membrane thickness, and feed temperature. The optimized PDMS/ZIF-8@GO MMMs displayed a prominent separation factor of 22.2 with a total flux of 443.8 g/m 2 h with 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 40 °C, and therefore the superior pervaporation performance to most other PDMS-based MMMs. The excellent pervaporation results were attributed to the synergistic effect of GO nanosheet as a strong barrier and hydrophobic ZIF-8 nanoparticles with the continuous inner channels. The synergistic effect of hybrid particles may provide valuable guidance to the development of high-performance PDMS-based MMMs for pervaporation recovery of various organic compounds.

ZIF-8 self-etching method for Au/polydopamine hybrid cubic microcapsules with modulated nanostructures

Qunling Fang,Yuhang Sun,Jinyu Duan,Linfeng Bai,Kezhu Xu,Qinshan Xiong,Huajian Xu,Ken Cham-Fai Leung,Ailing Hui,Shouhu Xuan

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived nanostructures exhibit wonderful characteristics and possess broad application potential by modulating the complex composition and inner nanostructure. Although various MOF-based nanocomposites have been successfully developed, a facile method that can easily modulate the structure-dependent chemical components of the MOF-derived hybrids remains a challenge. By coating zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with Au/polydopamine (Au/PDA) via in situ redox-oxidation polymerization of HAuCl4 and dopamine, it was found that the ZIF-8 templates were simultaneously etched off to give Au/PDA hybrid microcapsules with a cubic shape. This one-step sacrificial templating process followed a competing chelation between gold ions and Zn2+ cations to 2-methylimidazole and PDA; thus, both the hollow and the yolk-like hybrid cubic microcapsules were controllably obtained by varying the synthetic dynamics. Owing to the hollow nature, penetrated PDA shell, well-distributed Au nanocrystals, and unique stable nanostructure, the non-spherical Au/PDA hybrid cubic microcapsules showed high performance in catalyzing the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as well as adsorption/release of ibuprofen as a model drug. Moreover, this simple strategy offers a controllable design in developing multifunctional nanocomposites with definite inner nanostructures and activities for nanocatalysis, drug delivery, energy storage etc.

The Role of C-8 OH on the Antioxidant Activity of Norwogonin and Isowogonin

Qiushan Zhang,Jin Shao,Tong Zhao,Lei He,Huiping Ma,Linlin Jing

In the present study, the antioxidant property of 4 flavones (moslosooflavone, wogonin, isowogonin, and norwogonin) was evaluated using 6 different assays: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·), superoxide (O2 •−), and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging assays, ferrous iron chelation, reducing power, and total antioxidant capacity. The 4 flavones exhibited antioxidant activities with decreasing order as norwogonin > isowogonin >> wogonin> moslosooflavone. The present results demonstrated that norwogonin and isowogonin exhibited excellent antioxidant activity, which was mainly based on the presence of C-8 hydroxyl group.

Integrating metal-organic framework ZIF-8 with green modifier empowered bacteria with improved bioremediation

Mina Liu,Lei Zhang,Rongrong Yang,Haiyang Cui,Yanan Li,Xiujuan Li,He Huang

Suspended microorganisms often experience diminished efficacy in the bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, the potential of zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and the eco-friendly modifier citric acid (CA) was harnessed to generate a biomimetic mineralized protective shell on the surface of Bacillus subtilis ZL09-26, resulting in an enhanced capability for PAH degradation. This investigation encompassed the integrated responses of B. subtilis ZL09-26 to ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-CA at both cellular and proteomic levels. The amalgamation of ZIF-8 and CA not only stimulated the growth and bolstered the cell viability of B. subtilis ZL09-26, but also counteracted the toxic effects of phenanthrene (PHE) stress. Remarkably, the bioremediation prowess of B. subtilis ZL09-26@ZIF-8-CA surpassed that of ZL09-26@ZIF-8 and ZL09-26, achieving a PHE removal rate of 94.14% within 6 days. After undergoing five cycles, ZL09-26@ZIF-8-CA demonstrated an enduring PHE removal rate exceeding 83.31%. A complex interplay of various metabolic pathways orchestrated cellular responses, enhancing PHE transport and degradation. These pathways encompassed direct PHE biodegradation, central carbon metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, purine metabolism, and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis. This study not only extends the potential applications of biomineralized organisms but also offers alternative strategies for effective contaminant management.

A 8-fold interpenetrated metal-organic framework: Luminescent property and photocatalytic dye degradation performance

Di-Ming Chen,Xue-Jing Zhang

The self-assembly of Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O, benzene-p-dicarboxylic acid (H 2 BDC) and tris(4-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)phenyl)amine (L) affords a new Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with the formula of {[Zn 3 (L)(BDC) 3 (H 2 O) 3 ]·3.5H 2 O} n ( 1 ). The structural determination results reveal that complex 1 demonstrates a 8-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional network with a 3-connected srs net. The photoluminescent study shows that the interligand-based charge-transfer contributes to the strong emission of 1  at room temperature . Furthermore, complex 1 could be applied as an efficient photocatalyst for the elimination of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) with the degradation efficiency all above 90% within 70 min under UV light irradiation . In connection to this, the detailed degradation mechanism has been probed both experimentally and computationally.

Seed-assisted in situ ZIF-8 growth on carbon nanofibers for enhanced microwave absorption

Xue Wang,Liying Zhang,Enjie Ding,Xinhui Cao,Chuyang Luo,Liqian Huang

The design and preparation of excellent microwave absorbing materials is of great importance facing increasingly negative effects of electromagnetic (EM) wave radiation and interference. Combining metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanofibers is a valuable approach to improve microwave absorption performance . Herein, C/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofiber composites were synthesized using the seed-assisted in situ electrospinning method , with the precursor being a zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8). The unique porous structure and the heterointerfaces formed between C and ZnO facilitated the scattering and multiple reflections of microwaves. On account of the combination of interfacial polarization loss, dipole polarization loss and conduction loss , the C/ZnO nanofiber composites exhibited outstanding microwave absorption performance. The minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −58 dB at 7.5 GHz as well as an effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) of 6.5 GHz was achieved. This work provides an innovative methodology for developing highly efficient microwave absorbing materials using a combination of carbon materials and MOF nanoparticles .

Co@NC@ZIF-8-hybridized carbon molecular sieve membranes for highly efficient gas separation

Yonghong Wang,Kaixin Wang,Xinru Zhang,Jinping Li

Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes are widely used for the separation of similar molecular kinetic diameter gas. However, their performance is limited by a large amount of discontinuous porous structures and a few adsorption affinity sites. Herein, we first prepared magnetic Co@NC@ZIF-8 nanoparticles , followed by introducing it into the polyimides matrix to design precursor membrane with vertical nanochain-like particle distribution by magnetic field induction. Afterwards, hybrid carbon molecular sieve (HCMS) membranes were prepared by pyrolyzing precursor with high-temperature under N 2 atmosphere, which had ordered microporous architecture and Co-N-C structure. Resultant HCMS membranes prepared by magnetic field induction had excellent gas separation performance, whose CO 2 , N 2 and CH 4 permeabilities were 27,050, 2614 and 622 Barrer, with CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /CH 4 and N 2 /CH 4 selectivities of 10.4, 43.5 and 4.2 respectively. These values far exceeded 2019 CO 2 /CH 4 and 2008 N 2 /CH 4 upper bounds as well as approached 2008 CO 2 /N 2 upper bound. The superior performance resulted from the vertically ordered nanochain-like channels for gas transport, which dramatically shortens the transport path of gas molecules to intensify shape sieving potential. Moreover, the Co-N-C structure on the wall of channels could facilitate CO 2 transport due to the π complexation. Additionally, a large quantity of nitrogen sites in the carbonized Co@NC@ZIF-8 enhance CO 2 adsorption selectivity owing to the acid-base interaction. More remarkably, after 30-day aging testing, it was found that HCMS membranes prepared by magnetic field induction had exceptional aging resistance compared to the pristine CMS membranes and one without magnetic field induction under the same aging environments.

Surface crafting and entrapment of CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs in ZIF-8 for ammonia recognition

Imtiaz Ahmad,Mohammed Abohashrh,Abdur Rahim,Sadia Ahmad,Tahir Muhmood,Hongli Wen

The substantial optical features of perovskite quantum dots (PQD) lead to rapid growth in the investigation of their surface and lattice doping for optoelectronic and biochemical sensor advancements. Herein, we have used the surface ligand crafting model of PQD by ammonia and its optimum response to recognise ammonia in the sensing cellulose paper. The PQD with acetyl amine and octanoic acid capped were synthesized and entrapped in zeolites imidazole framework to delay the instant quenching and envisaged response to ammonia with high sensitivity. The hybrid perovskite quantum dots and Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (PQD@ZIF-8) materials were further immersed in cellulose paper for solid-state sensor fabrication for the detection of ammonia by naked-eye and a Xiaomi Note-5 mobile camera. The ammonia was measured with high sensitivity at ambient conditions, with a detection limit of 16 ppm and a linear detection range of 1 to 500 ppm. This research provides a new platform for designing sensor selectivity and sensitivity, which could be used to further develop fluorescent nanomaterials-based sensors for small molecule detection.

Seeded-secondary growth synthesis of ZIF-8@porous mullite beads for adsorption of dyes

Hou Zhaoping,Tian Zihan,Zhao Junming,Yang Xinhe,Liu Liangliang

Zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8), serving as a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment, is limited in practical wastewater treatment due to its polycrystalline powder form resulting in poor recoverability. Herein, the millimeter-scale ZIF-8@porous mullite beads were prepared by the seeded-secondary growth method. The surface of the porous mullite beads is fully encapsulated by nanoscale ZIF-8 crystals, and the ZIF-8 crystals are anchored by mullite whiskers. This composition provides ZIF-8 with a stable macroscopic structure and maintains the exposure of its adsorption sites. Therefore, the ZIF-8@porous mullite beads exhibited good adsorption performance toward methyl orange (MO) and orange G (OG) in the aqueous solution. The analysis of adsorption kinetics indicating the adsorption efficiency of ZIF-8@mullite-w on MO and OG is influenced by the concentration of adsorbates and the adsorption sites. The maximum adsorption of ZIF-8@porous mullite beads on MO and OG was 16.5289 and 5.111 mg/g, respectively.

Highly Hydrophilic ZIF-8 as a Carbonic Anhydrase Mimetic Catalyst for Promoting CO2 Absorption

Yuchen Zhou,Yu Wang,Zezhi Chen,Huijuan Gong,Lu Chen,Huiqiang Yu

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme with unparallele d catalytic activity in CO2 hydration. However, its high cost and low stability seriously restrict its industrial application in CO2 absorption. Constructing CA mimics is a promising strategy to overcome the above limitations. However, to date, a majority of mimics reported are suffering from laborious synthetic processes, harsh synthetic conditions, and costly ligand materials. Therefore, developing novel CA mimics with higher applicability remains a high priority. Due to the structural similarity between zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 and natural carbonic anhydrase (CA), ZIF-8 may be considered as a potential CA-mimetic catalyst for CO2 absorption. To validate this assumption, ZIF-8 and hydrophilic ZIF-8-TA were synthesized and the results from subsequent CO2 absorption experiments indicated that the synthesized catalysts could significantly enhance CO2 absorption in water and common alkaline solutions. The addition of 1.0 wt % ZIF-8 in water and different alkaline solutions respectively increased the average CO2 absorption rate by 42.35 and 6.78–24.51%, while the addition of 1.0 wt % of ZIF-8-TA increased the CO2 absorption rate by 81.80 and 18.16–34.39%, respectively. Besides, both catalysts possessed excellent reusability that they retained high performance even after five cycles of absorption and regeneration. Through esterase experiments, it was confirmed that ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-TA exhibited higher CA-mimetic activity than many reported CA mimics. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was indicated that the catalytic CO2 hydration pathway of ZIF-8 primarily involves four steps, including nucleophilic attack, rearrangement, replacement, and deprotonation, which is similar to that of natural CA, while ZIF-8-TA does not undergo the rearrangement step. Moreover, the electron-donation effect and van der Waals interaction of tannic acid endow ZIF-8-TA with higher catalytic activity.

Simultaneous removal of mixed contaminants, copper and norfloxacin, from aqueous solution by ZIF-8

Long Zhou,Na Li,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Many wastewaters commonly contain complex mixtures of both antibiotics and heavy metals, where the simultaneous removal of these mixed contaminants is still a challenge. In this paper, ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework material, was proposed as a potential absorbent to simultaneously remove norfloxacin and copper from wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments showed that ZIF-8 could simultaneously remove 95.4% of Cu and 80.3% of norfloxacin. ZIF-8 was characterized before and after the removal of the mixed contaminants. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that ZIF-8 was synthesized successfully and maintained a stable structure after contaminant adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) both suggested that contaminants were partially adsorbed on the surface of ZIF-8. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also indicated the presence of both carboxyl and Cu on the ZIF-8 surface confirming that a mixture of contaminants was adsorbed. For both contaminants, adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and best fit the Freundlich adsorption model with correlation coefficients (R 2 ) of 0.973 and 0.994, for copper and norfloxacin, respectively. Finally, removal mechanisms for copper and norfloxacin by ZIF-8 were proposed. For Cu, the adsorption process on ZIF-8 was mainly due to ion exchange, whereas electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking may be responsible for norfloxacin adsorption. Overall this study demonstrated that ZIF-8 was a promising material for the treatment of wastewater containing mixtures of organic and metallic contaminants.

Colorimetric detection of blood glucose based on GOx@ZIF-8@Fe-polydopamine cascade reaction

Zhenghong Zhao,Tianran Lin,Wenren Liu,Li Hou,Fanggui Ye,Shulin Zhao

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has become one of the most typical examples of nanostructures for multi-enzyme immobilization due to its economical, mild and easy synthesis process. However, ZIF-8 nanocrystals are easily decomposed under acidic conditions. To solve this problem, the Fe-polydopamine (Fe-PDA) was bonded with ZIF-8 surface to form [email protected] hybrid shell with good stability. Based on this, we developed glucose [email protected] @Fe-PDA ( [email protected] @Fe-PDA) integrated nanozymes (INAzymes) with cascade reactions via a mild and environmentally friendly method. In order to synthesize the INAzymes, GOx was first embedded in ZIF-8 by coprecipitation ( [email protected] ), and then [email protected] was bonded with Fe-PDA, which acted as a peroxidase mimic. The [email protected] hybrid shell protected the INAzymes nanostructure from degradation under acidic conditions, which results in good chemical stability of the [email protected] @Fe-PDA. In the INAzymes system, glucose is converted to gluconic acid by GOx in the presence of oxygen to produce H 2 O 2 as an intermediate. The H 2 O 2 reacts rapidly with Fe-PDA to generate OH, which oxidizes 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The UV absorbance of oxidized TMB is directly proportional to the glucose concentration, and has a good linear relationship in the range of 5.0–100.0 μM glucose with detection limit of 1.1 μM. The INAzymes system has been successfully applied to rapid colorimetric detection of blood glucose levels. The INAzymes system exhibits high catalytic activity, excellent sensitivity, and enhanced chemical stability, playing great promise in clinical diagnosis and biosensing.
