Accelerating the Design of β-CD-PVDF-based Molecularly Imprinted Nanocomposite Membrane for Selective Separation: A Surface Functional Monomer-Directing Strategy

Junda Wu,Jia Gao,Zhiqing Hou,Wendong Xing,Jiangdong Dai,Yongsheng Yan,Yilin Wu

Enoxacin, as the broad-spectrum antibacterial activity antibiotics, has been widely used in treatment of bacterial diseases in animals and humans around the world. The extensive use of enoxacin in healthcare has also caused increasingly serious environmental risk as a matter of course. In this work, enoxacin imprinted poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite membranes (EIPCMs) were developed by strategy of surface grafting beta-cyclodextrin ( β -CD) for the improved hydrophilic and antifouling properties of the basal membrane. PVDF membrane was prepared by phase inversion method, and β -CD was grafted onto the surface after hydroxyl groups modification. The effects of adding amount of β -CD on performance of basal membranes were systematically examined. Further, the specific recognition sites were fabricated via sol–gel surface imprinting method using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The specific adsorption and permeation experiments were investigated and explored the separation performance and mechanism of EIPCM. The results indicated that the as-prepared EIPCMs not only exhibited highly favorable features and high rebinding strength (31.25 mg g − 1 ) , but also possessed superior selective performance toward enoxacin (imprinted factor β is 3.15). Furthermore, in order to investigate the practical applications of EIPCMs, the adsorption experiments were carried out using environmental sewage. The work developed here shows great potential for further applications in selective recognition and separation antibiotics pollution from the environment.

Facile synthesis of superparamagnetic β-CD-MnFe2O4 as a peroxymonosulfate activator for efficient removal of 2,4- dichlorophenol: structure, performance, and mechanism

Xiaojun Zhou,Lingshuai Kong,Zongyu Jing,Shuqing Wang,Yongchao Lai,Meng Xie,Long Ma,Zhenyu Feng,Jinhua Zhan

In this study, superparamagnetic β-CD-MnFe 2 O 4 with a large surface area was synthesized via a facile co-precipitation method, with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) acting as a coating agent. The as-prepared β-CD-MnFe 2 O 4 exhibited better catalytic performance than bare MnFe 2 O 4 in terms of activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) over a broad pH range of 5–11. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) and free radical quenching experiments indicate that various active species (SO 4 − / OH/O 2 − / 1 O 2 ) are generated in the β-CD-MnFe 2 O 4 /PMS system and that pollutants trapped in the cyclodextrin cavity are quickly degraded. Various reaction parameters of the β-CD-MnFe 2 O 4 /PMS system and the stability of β-CD-MnFe 2 O 4 were also investigated. The results indicate that β-CD-MnFe 2 O 4 is promising for use in water purification owing to its excellent magnetic separation and recovery properties and good resistance to humic acid (HA).

Simultaneous detection of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry using a bismuth oxycarbide/nafion electrode

Yaxiao Zhang,Chao Li,Yingchun Su,Wei Mu,Xiaojun Han

Heavy metal pollution causes serious health threat to humanbeings. Herein we fabricated a novel bismuth oxycarbide (BOC) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the simultaneous detection of cadmium and lead ions using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The main factors influencing the detection performance, such as solution pH, deposition voltage and deposition time were optimized to be 4.5, −1.3v, and 700s, respectively. The detection limits for lead ions and cadmium ions were 4.30 μg/L and 3.97 μg/L, respectively. These detection limits are both lower than 5 μg/L for cadmium ions and 10 μg/L for lead ions national standards. The BOC modified GCE exhibits good selectivity and reliability for the detection of lead ions and cadmium ions. BOC/GCE may find great potential for heavy metal ions detection in real water sample.

Facile in situ synthesis of cellulose microcrystalline-manganese dioxide nanocomposite for effective removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from water

Fu Binbin,Xie Fencun

A novel cellulose microcrystalline-manganese dioxide nanocomposite (CMC-NMO) was synthesized by the redox reaction between potassium permanganate and ethanol based on cellulose microcrystalline. The cellulose microcrystalline (CMC) as support providing growth sites for the manganese dioxide nanowhiskers produced by the redox reaction and its application for Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal from aqueous was investigated. The characterization of as-synthesized material was revealed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Infrared-transform infrared (FITR) indicates that the incorporation of manganese oxide to CMC does not change the initial structure of it. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data show that the manganese dioxide nanowhiskers with a few nanometers are uniformly dispersed on the surface of cellulose. Kinetics experiments reveal that Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption on CMC-NMO is a fast process and pseudo-second-order model fits the adsorption better. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) obtained from the Langmuir model are 290.8 mg/g and 67.4 mg/g, respectively. The mechanism is mainly attributed to surface complexation and electrostatic attraction by energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. In addition, depth removal experiments show that the residual concentrations of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in natural water after adsorption are lower than 0.01 mg/L. The regeneration and cyclic utilizing studies indicate that CMC-NMO has good adsorption stability. Therefore, the results indicate that this material can be employed as a potential adsorbent for current serious Pb(II) and Cd(II) pollution caused by industrial emissions. Graphical abstract

Immobilization and sorption of Cd and Pb in contaminated stagnic anthrosols as amended with biochar and manure combined with inorganic additives

Yasir Hamid,Lin Tang,Bilal Hussain,Muhammad Usman,Muhammad Laeeq ur Rehman Hashmi,Muhammad Bilal Khan,Xiaoe Yang,Zhenli He

The present study evaluated the efficiency of pre-selected composite amendments (CA-1: biochar-lime-sepiolite-zeolite and CA-2: manure-lime-sepiolite) for immobilization and sorption of Cd and Pb in field and batch sorption experiments. The field experiment was performed in a co-contaminated clay purple soil (stagnic anthrosols). Along with a control experiment (T1), CA-1 and CA-2 were tested at different rates including 750, 1500, 3000 and 6000 kg ha −1 by growing wheat as the test crop. The obtained results revealed that the highest dose of both composites (T5: 6000 kg ha −1 and T9: 6000 kg ha −1 ) increased the soil pH to 6.85 and 6.81, respectively as compared to the control (5.63). DTPA-extractable Cd and Pb contents decreased with composite treatments (T7 and T4) at harvest stage samples. Metal fractionation depicted that application of amendments decreased the exchangeable fraction at harvesting stage. Application of CA-2 and CA-1 (3000 kg ha −1 ) significantly increased the plant biomass (by 28% and 24%, respectively) and grain yield (by 26% and 22%, respectively) of wheat. Furthermore, batch sorption experiment results revealed that Langmuir adsorption model better fitted the sorption results with R 2 values ranging between 0.99 and 0.91 for Cd and Pb, respectively. CA-1 and CA-2 exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity for Cd with no significant difference among treatments but Pb adsorption capacity was highest in CA-1 followed by CA-2 and control. The results of our experiments revealed that the application of organics combined with inorganic materials enhanced Cd and Pb immobilization and sorption, consequently reducing metals availability in laboratory and field conditions. Moreover, for field trials, application of the composite amendments at 3000 kg ha −1 emerged as the suitable treatment for tested wheat-grown area.

Exploring the potential of magnetic persimmon tannins-based bio-adsorbent for Cd (II) ions removal from water: Experiment and DFT study

Fan Zhou,Lin Gao,Shunyan Cui,Jing Tian,Tong Wang,Guiyin Li,Zhongmin Wang,Chaoke Qin,Dahong Lin,Weijiang Gan,Zhaojin Ran

Cadmium (Cd (II)) pollution in water and soil is a global problem that poses a serious threat to both human health and the ecological balance of the environment. Therefore, the development of efficient and environmentally friendly bio-adsorbent materials is the key to remediating Cd (II) pollution. Herein, a magnetic persimmon tannins composites bio-adsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 /PT, MPT) which is decorated with iron oxide has been successfully prepared by the crosslinking method for investigating its adsorption potential and mechanisms of Cd (II) in aqueous solution. The maximum Cd (II) adsorption capacity of MPT adsorbent is 73.33 mg/g. Further, the adsorption kinetic and isotherm are in line with the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich equilibrium isotherm model. The thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Especially, the density functional theory calculations of geometric configuration and isosurface diagram both confirm the interaction mechanisms between MPT and Cd (II) including chelation reactions and electrostatic interactions, which are consistent with experiment results. All these results indicate that MPT bio-adsorbent can be used as an efficient, environmentally friendly and low-cost bio-adsorbent for the removal of Cd (II) contaminants from aqueous solution.

An ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for detecting Cd(II) in aquatic products based on CS/COFs/PEDOT: PSS modified acupuncture needle electrode

Qi Guo,Yuhao Zhang,Luting Yan,Xiaoya Meng,Yue Wang,Hongguo Zhai,Xiaofeng Chen,Xia Sun,Yemin Guo,Yanyan Zhang

The use of low-cost working electrodes is of great importance for the development of sensor industrialization. Acupuncture needles electrode (ANE) was selected as working microelectrode, a sensor was designed based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) and chitosan (CS) modified covalent organic frameworks (COFs) (CS/COFs) for detection of cadmium (Cd(II)). First, a mixture of PEDOT and PSS was electrodeposited on the surface of the acupuncture needles to synthesize a PEDOT: PSS as conductive polymeric film to support the electron transfer capability and enhance the conductive efficiency of the sensor. Then, CS/COFs was self-assembled and attached to the PEDOT: PSS/ANE surface by π-π stacking intermolecular interaction forces and the viscosity of CS, thus increasing the specific surface area of the electrode. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was used as the electrochemical method for detection of Cd(II). And the results indicated that the CS/COFs/PEDOT: PSS/ANE was linearly responsive in the range of 400 μg/L to 2400 μg/L, and the LOD was 13.8 ng/L for Cd(II). The constructed sensor also showed great selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated outstanding recovery in the detection of Cd(II) in real sample scallops. This sensing construction method based on acupuncture needles as working electrodes is of great significance to the development of sensor industrialization and aquatic product safety detection.

Discard the dross and select the essence: Purified orange peel with coupled alkali-acid hydrolysis as potential Cd(II)-capturing adsorbent

Haoyue Tang,Yu Zhang,You Wu,Wenyu Wu,Shiying Bi,Junjie Wu,Shitong Yang

Turning agricultural wastes into green adsorbents is a compatible and cost-effective strategy for solid waste disposal and environmental pollution control. Herein, the discarded orange peel (OP) sample was purified via coupled alkali-acid hydrolysis and the obtained adsorbents were applied for eliminating toxic cadmium (Cd(II)) from the liquid phase. Based on the single factor experiments, the optimal Cd(II)-capturing adsorbent (i.e., OP-OH-H-25) was generated under the purification condition of soaking raw OP in 2.0 M NaOH solution at 25 °C followed by an acid hydrolysis treatment with 2.5 M HCl solution at 25 °C. Spectral analyses reflected the efficient elution of hemicellulose/pectin and lignin impurities, the transformation of cellulose type I to cellulose type II, and the exposure of sulfhydryl functional groups. The kinetics removal process of Cd(II) by OP-OH-H-25 reached equilibrium after 0.5 h with a removal efficiency of ∼88%. The maximum Cd(II) sorption capacity of OP-OH-H-25 (i.e., 124.90 mg/g) was higher than a series of previously reported adsorbents. The sorption behavior of Cd(II) onto the prepared OP-OH-H-25 material was mostly interfered with by the coexisting Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and heavy metals. The desorption data and spectroscopic analysis jointly pointed to the inner-sphere binding of Cd(II) with OP-OH-H-25 functional groups. Overall, the extracted OP-OH-H-25 sample could act as a promising decontaminant for the remediation of Cd(II)-polluted water environment.

Co-transport of degradable microplastics with Cd(Ⅱ) in saturated porous media: Synergistic effects of strong adsorption affinity and high mobility

Jiao Fei,Jiahao Cui,Binying Wang,Haoyuan Xie,Changzhao Wang,Yifan Zhao,Huimin Sun,Xianqiang Yin

With the utilization of degradable plastics in the agricultural film and packaging industries, degradable microplastics (MPs) with strong mobility distributed in the underground environment may serve as carriers for heavy metals. It is essential to explore the interaction of (aged) degradable MPs with Cd(Ⅱ). The adsorption and co-transport behavior of different types of (aged) MPs (polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) with Cd(Ⅱ) were investigated through batch adsorption experiments and column experiments under different conditions, respectively. The adsorption results showed that the adsorptive capacity of (aged) PLA with O-functional groups, polarity, and more negative charges was stronger than that of PVC and aged PVC, which was attributed to the binding of (aged) PLA to Cd(Ⅱ) through complexation and electrostatic attraction. The co-transport results indicated that the promotion of Cd(Ⅱ) transport by MPs followed the order of aged PLA > PLA > aged PVC > PVC. This facilitation was more pronounced under conditions of stronger transport of MPs and favorable attachment of Cd(Ⅱ) to MPs. Overall, the combination of strong adsorption affinity and high mobility helped (aged) PLA act as effective carriers for Cd(Ⅱ). The DLVO theory well explains the transport behavior of Cd(Ⅱ)-MPs. These findings provide new insights into the co-transport of degradable MPs and heavy metals in the subsurface environment.

Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Screen-Printed Electrode Coated Bismuth Oxide Nanoparticle for Rapid Detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Hao Cui,Qingde Li

Paint has a variety of excellent properties containing anti-corrosion, waterproof, oil-proof, chemicalresistant, light-resistant, temperature-resistant. The wooden furniture covered with paint is commonly used to ensure their excellent quality. However, the soluble heavy metals in the paint exist on the surface of wooden furniture, endangering human health when they are enriched in human bodies. Therefore, an effective detection method is needed to analyze the contents of heavy metals in wooden furniture. Here, we designed and manufactured a disposable screen-printed electrode (SPE) for the Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination through square wave anodic stripping voltammetry, which used a special printed ink mixed multi-walled carbon nanotube and coated with bismuth oxide nanoparticle (BONP-MSPE). The characteristics of BONP-MSPE were studied using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and square-wave stripping voltammetry, and then the detecting conditions were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the values of peak currents of Cd(II) and Pb(II) increased linearly with the concentrations of Cd(II) and Pb(II). The linear ranges were from 0.5 to 40 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.5 to 40 μg/L for Pb(II), with detection limits of 0.5 μg/L and 0.05 μg/L (S/N = 3), respectively, Lastly, the BONP-MSPE was further employed to measure the contents of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in pint samples analysis.

Enhancing the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells by incorporating CdS and Cd(SCN2H4)2Cl2 into the CH3NH3PbI3 active layer

Liangxin Zhu,Chong Chen,Fumin Li,Zhitao Shen,Yujuan Weng,Qingsong Huang,Mingtai Wang

To improve the charge separation and transport efficiency in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a TiO2-based hybrid mesoscopic/planar architecture, CdS and Cd(SCN2H4)2Cl2 are incorporated into the CH3NH3PbI3 active layer through in situ synthesis to prepare CdS:Cd(SCN2H4)2Cl2:CH3NH3PbI3 bulk-heterojunction films for PSCs. The incorporated CdS and Cd(SCN2H4)2Cl2 improve the quality of perovskite films. Moreover, Cd(SCN2H4)2Cl2 can effectively reduce the defect state density on the CH3NH3PbI3 crystal surface, which decreases charge recombination and facilitates charge transport in PSCs. Furthermore, first-principles calculations show that the I atom of CH3NH3PbI3 has a strong interaction with the Cd atom of CdS, which induces interfacial charge redistribution and charge transfer at the CH3NH3PbI3/CdS interface and therefore decreases the energy of the CH3NH3PbI3:CdS composite system, leading to more efficient electron–hole separation and improved structural stability of the perovskite bulk-heterojunction film. For the above reasons, the CdS:Cd(SCN2H4)2Cl2:CH3NH3PbI3 bulk-heterojunction cell shows much higher efficiency and better stability than the PSCs with pure CH3NH3PbI3. The highest efficiency reaches 20.1%, which is 1.16 times that (17.3%) of the PSCs with pure CH3NH3PbI3 and is also much higher than those of previously reported CH3NH3PbI3 PSCs with a compact/mesoporous TiO2 film. Our research results may provide a new understanding for improving the structural stability and performance of PSCs.

A Novel Magnetic Cd(II) Ion-Imprinted Polymer as a Selective Sorbent for the Removal of Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Solution

Wang Hongpeng,Lin Yuecheng,Li Yin,Dolgormaa Anudari,Fang Hui,Guo Lin,Huang Jun,Yang Junxing

To improve the adsorption capacity of Cd(II) ions, Cd(II) ions were imprinted on the surface of aminoethyl chitosan (AECS), which was coated on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles. A novel magnetic Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer (Cd(II)-IIP) was synthesized, characterized, and applied to the selective separation of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution. The adsorption–desorption properties and selectivity of Cd(II)-IIP and a non-imprinted polymer (Cd(II)-NIP) were investigated. The optimum pH and equilibrium binding time were established at pH 6.0 and 60 min, respectively. Kinetics studies demonstrated that the adsorption process proceeded according to a pseudo-first or second order model, while the adsorption isotherms agreed with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II)-IIP and Cd(II)-NIP toward Cd(II) ions, as calculated by the Langmuir equation, at pH 6.0 and 25 °C were 26.1 and 6.7 mg/g, respectively. The imprinted polymer showed higher selectivity toward Cd(II) ions compared to the non-imprinted polymer. The relative selectivity factor ( β r ) values of Cd(II)/Cu(II), Cd(II)/Cr(II), and Cd(II)/Pb(II) were 3.315, 3.875, and 2.061, respectively. In addition, Cd(II) ions adsorbed on the Cd(II)-IIP adsorbent could be easily released using 0.1 M HNO 3 , thus showing good material stability and reusability. The adsorption capacity of Cd(II)-IIP was retained at 74% after undergoing six adsorption–desorption cycles.
