Insulin-loaded hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose-co-polyacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid hydrogels used as rectal suppositories to regulate the blood glucose of diabetic rats

Yongli Shi,Jintao Xue,Yajun Sang,Xiaoqing Xu,Qing Shang

The purpose of this study was developing a novel hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose- co -polyacrylamide- co -methacrylic acid (HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA) hydrogel, which was used as rectal suppository to regulate the blood glucose of diabetes. HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogel was fabricated via free-radical polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectra were used to confirm the fabrication of HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogel. Their inner morphology was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The extracts of hydrogel were applied to study their cell viability . The hypoglycemic effects of insulin (INS)-loaded HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogels were investigated by rectal administration. FTIR and Raman spectra confirmed the obtaining of HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogels. Many micro-pores were found in the SEM photograph of HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogels. Cell experiments indicated that HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogel was out of cytotoxicity. In vitro release profiles showed that INS-loaded hydrogel could release INS at a continuous manner in pH 7.4 buffer (rectal conditions). Animal experiments suggested that INS-loaded hydrogel had an obvious hypoglycemic effect. Therefore, as a convenient and economic method of administration, INS-loaded HPMC- co -PAM- co -PMAA hydrogels could be used as rectal suppositories to regulate blood glucose.

Selenium phosphorus co-doped cobalt oxide nanosheets anchored on Co foil: A self-supported and stable bifunctional electrode for efficient electrochemical water splitting

Yi-Fan Jiang,Cheng-Zong Yuan,Xiao Zhou,Ya-Nan Liu,Zhi-Wei Zhao,Sheng-Jie Zhao,An-Wu Xu

The design of inexpensive, efficient, durable and self-supported bifunctional electrodes for simultaneously catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the same electrolyte is essential for renewable energy conversion processes and future sustainable development, however, it still remains a challenging issue. Reported herein is the first example of selenium phosphorus co-doped cobalt oxide nanosheets on highly conductive Co foil collector (CoOSeP@Co foil), fabricated by successively selenylation and phosphorization of a pre-oxidized Co foil, as a novel bifunctional electrode for water electrolysis. Due to the improved intrinsic catalytic activity of cobalt oxide derived from doping and the strong interaction between active CoOSeP nanosheets and highly conductive Co foil collector, the designed CoOSeP@Co foil integrated electrode displays favorable catalytic activities towards both HER and OER in strongly alkaline media, achieving an electrocatalytic current density of 10 mA cm −2  at a low overpotential of 155 mV for HER and 347 mV for OER, respectively. Beyond that, the electrode could keep working and maintain its catalytic activity for at least 30 h. Furthermore, an alkaline electrolyzer constructed by employing CoOSeP@Co foil as an integrated bifunctional electrode in both the cathode and anode can generate 10 mA cm −2  at a cell voltage of 1.74 V and shows good long-term stability of more than 30 h. This work not only opens a new avenue to improve the intrinsic catalytic activity of materials by co-doping with heteroatoms , but also brings us a new idea for designing other cost-effective, self-supported, efficient and robust overall water splitting electrodes.

Large scale selective synthesis of α-Co(OH)2 and β-Co(OH)2 nanosheets through a fluoride ions mediated phase transformation process

Hongtao Cui,Yunan Zhao,Wanzhong Ren,Minmin Wang,Yan Liu

In this work, α-Co(OH) 2 and β-Co(OH) 2 nanosheets were selectively synthesized through an epoxide precipitation reaction under mediation of fluoride ions. The protonation and ring opening reaction of propylene oxide promoted the hydrolysis [Co(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ to form a mixed phase of α-Co(OH) 2 and Co 2 (OH) 3 Cl in the condition of no existence of fluoride ions. Due to the enhanced hydrolysis of [Co(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ under function of fluoride ions, pure phases of α-Co(OH) 2 and β-Co(OH) 2 were formed respectively at different concentration of fluoride ions. The mild reaction condition of this route allows for large scale synthesis of cobalt hydroxide nanosheets, which is only limited by volume of the vessel used as reactor.

Diiron hexacarbonyl complexes as potential CO-RMs: CO-releasing initiated by a substitution reaction with cysteamine and structural correlation to the bridging linkage

Xiujuan Jiang,Li Long,Hailong Wang,Limei Chen,Xiaoming Liu

The CO-releasing behaviours of nine diiron carbonyl complexes (1–9) were examined via the substitution reaction of cysteamine (CysA), of which complex 4 was reported recently. These complexes fall into three categories, the diiron core bridged by two thiolates, a dithiolate and 1,8-naphthalene dithiolate. Our results reveal that the CO-releasing rates of these complexes are highly dependent on their structures. Complexes (2–4) bearing two monothiolates as their bridging linkage (“open” form) are more vulnerable to decomposition upon nucleophilic substitution reactions compared with complexes (6–9) that possess a dithiolate as their bridging linkage. When the bridging linkage lacks an electron-donating group (complex 1), the metal centre is less negatively charged as revealed by DFT calculation, and thus it exhibits fast substitution reaction with CysA to release CO. A linkage with conjugating nature (5) shows a similar effect because electron density on the metal centre decreases due to electron-density diverting from the metal centre into the naphthalene moiety. Kinetic analysis suggests that CO-releasing at the first stage of these complexes is a first-order reaction.

Highly selective ion precipitation flotation for ternary Co–Zn–Mn separation: Stepwise chelation capture of Co and Zn from simulated zinc hydrometallurgy wastewater

Yanfang Huang,Meimei Wang,Bingbing Liu,Shengpeng Su,Hu Sun,Shuzhen Yang,Guihong Han

Ion precipitation flotation technology was demonstrated to be an efficient method for the separation of valuable metals from low-concentration solution. However, the selective separation of three metals from mixing solution is a great challenge, and highly selective reagents are the key to polymetallic separation. In this work, stepwise separation of Co and Zn from the simulated zinc hydrometallurgy wastewater containing ternary Co–Zn–Mn metals by ion precipitation flotation process was proposed. It's demonstrated that organic reagents of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol (NN) and sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) had excellent selectivity for the capture of Co and Zn to form respective precipitate from wastewaters via the chelation reactions. After precipitation, dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) were chosen as surfactants for the separation of Co and Zn sediments from the solution via the flotation process. The effects of solution pH, molar ratio, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the selective precipitation efficiencies of Co and Zn as well as the effects of surfactant dosage and flotation gas velocity on the flotation separation efficiencies were systematically investigated. It's demonstrated that the comprehensive recovery rates of Co, Mn, and Zn reach 98%, 90%, and 99%, respectively. After separation, oxidation calcination of the foam products was conducted to prepare high-purity Co 3 O 4 and ZnO nanoparticles in which the organic matters were burnt out with gas emissions. The stepwise chelation capture mechanisms of Co and Zn by highly selective precipitation reagents were minutely discussed. It's demonstrated that the proposed selective stepwise precipitation and flotation method is suitable for recovery of critical metal ions from low-concentration polymetallic wastewaters.

Synergistic Co/S co-doped CeO2 sulfur-oxide catalyst for efficient catalytic reduction of toxic organics and heavy metal pollutants under dark conditions

Pengkun Zhang,Haoyu Wang,Yujie Lai,Yunzhuo Xu,Longyan Chen,Qinhan Wu,Dong-Hau Kuo,Dongfang Lu,Mengistu Tadesse Mosisa,Jiqing Li,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

The rising accumulation of pollutants, including heavy metals and toxic organics, necessitates effective environmental remediation to protect health and biological systems. In this study, a cubic cerianite CeO 2 -like Co/S co-doped CeO 2 sulfur-oxide catalyst (labeled as CeCoOS) with super catalytic reduction performance of pollutants with NaBH 4 as a reducing agent under dark was prepared via a green and facile preparation method. Transition metal Co 2+ -cation and S 2− -anion co-doped CeO 2 adjusted the energy bandgap and introduced oxygen vacancy (Vo), which converted Ce 4+ around Vo into Ce 3+ to maintain electric neutrality. The heterovalent Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ states in Co/S-CeO 2 enhance the electron lifetime and facilitate fast electron transfer . The valence transition between Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Vo make the Co/S co-doped in CeO 2 catalyst increase its electrochemically active surface sites and accelerate the pollutants reduction reaction. The CeCoOS-3 with Co/S dopants has an excellent catalytic reduction activity to completely reduce 20 ppm toxic 4-NP in 10 min, 50 ppm organic dyes of MB, RhB, and MO in 6 min, and 50 ppm heavy metal Cr 6+ in 10 min. The CeCoOS-3 sulfur-oxide catalyst also exhibited excellent stability in the reusability test. Therefore, CeCoOS sulfur-oxide catalysts are expected to be used for dye decolorization, detoxification of organic toxins, and reduction of electroplating wastewater.

Synergy of metallic Co and oxygen vacancy sites in Co/Ce-MOF catalysts for efficiently promoting lignin derived phenols and macromolecular lignin hydrodeoxygenation

Changzhou Chen,Jie Jiang,Yajun Liu,Xialin Ji,Mengqing Zhou,Jun Zhao,Jianchun Jiang

The enhanced utilization of biomass-derived chemicals for the generation of high value aromatics through an advanced catalytic strategy has captured considerable attention within the realm of eco-friendly manufacturing. This work presented four innovative three-dimensional rod-shaped mesoporous Ce-based MOF materials, which were coupled with a H-donor solvent to facilitate vanillin hydrodeoxygenation and macromolecular lignin. Under the optimized conditions (30 mg CoCe@C catalyst, 2 MPa N 2 pressure, 15 mL isopropanol, 190 °C, and 5 h), the CoCe@C catalyst achieved nearly complete conversion of vanillin and demonstrated 87.8 % selectivity in the hydrogen-donor solvent. The characterization findings suggested that the synergy between metallic Co and oxygen vacancy sites enabled the effective activation of CHO group in vanillin, leading to formation of reactive product MMP . In addition, the optimal CoCe@C catalyst could also achieve macromolecular lignin hydrodeoxygenation to obtain high yield of lignin oil products with narrower molecular weight distribution . This study presented a viable approach for the concurrent utilization of lignin derivatives in the generation of high value fuels and chemicals.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate)-based microspheres as a sustained platform for Huperzine A delivery for alzheimer's disease therapy

Dai-Xu Wei,Duanfang Cai,Youguo Tan,Kezhi Liu,Jin-Wei Dao,Xiang Li,Aikeremujiang Muheremu

Huperzine A (HupA) is used in Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapy for its effective inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and enhancement of cholinergic neuronal function. However, direct oral administration and injection of HupA cause side effects like nausea, anorexia, and rapid metabolism. Using a tripolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate- co -3-hydroxyvalerate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate (PBVHx), from the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) family synthesized via synthetic biology, we present a novel AD therapy strategy with peritoneally administered PBVHx microspheres loaded with HupA (HupA-PBVHxMs). This approach extends HupA's metabolic duration in the blood and brain, enhancing AChE inhibition efficacy. Uniformly sized HupA-PBVHxMs, created using microfluidics and rotary evaporation, show up to 70.4 % drug encapsulation efficiency, sustained HupA release for 40 days, reduced neurotoxicity from Aβ25–35, and maintained in vivo HupA supply and AChE inhibition for over 20 days. In cognitive tests, HupA-PBVHxMs improved function in AD mice. Thus, PBVHx microspheres with slower HupA release and lower biotoxicity offer a superior platform for sustained AChE inhibitor release, outperforming commercial PLGA microspheres.

Molecular engineering of Co ion–imprinted sites on metal–organic frameworks and facile photodeposition for the selective recovery and upcycling of Co(II)

Xin Liu,Ruixue Hu,Shiran Zhu,Xiangyu Liu,Yu Fang,Yihang Li,Wei Wei

Background The demand for adsorption technologies that facilitate the recovery and upcycling of the valuable metallic element, Co, has been increasing. The recovery of Co from wastewater using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which are promising adsorbents, is considerably limited because of the lack of selective adsorption sites. Furthermore, research on the upcycling of Co remains inadequate. Methods Herein, we develop an integrated strategy combining ion imprinting modification and photodeposition for the selective recovery and upcycling of divalent Co ions (Co(II)) using MOF adsorbents. Significant findings First, Co ion–imprinted sites are constructed on a typical MOF adsorbent, MIL-125 (labeled CoIP-ML), via molecular engineering using glycylglycine. Compared with the original aminated MIL-125, CoIP-ML exhibits a superior performance, achieving the maximum adsorption capacity ( q m = 218.6 mg/g) and selectivity (selective coefficient k Co(II)/Ni(II) = 3.61) for Co(II) via the chelation of Schiff base groups and adsorption at terminal carboxyl groups. The Co(II) adsorbed on CoIP-ML is upcycled through a facile photodeposition process into Co oxides, which function as a Fenton-like catalyst. The optimal catalyst effectively activates peroxymonosulfate for the removal of chloroquine diphosphate and chlortetracycline hydrochloride, achieving the upcycling of Co(II). This study presents a unique MOF-functionalization paradigm.

Synthesis and characterizations of branched poly(butylene isophthalate)-co-poly(tetramethylene glycol)-co-poly(ethylene glycol) fibers with excellent low temperature elastic recovery

Huang Xia,Guo Ronghui,Lan Jianwu

To improve the low temperature elastic recovery and tensile properties of the traditional poly(ether-ester), a series of randomly branched poly(ether-ester)s consisting of poly(butylene isophthalate) as hard segment, poly(tetramethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol) as mixed soft segment, and trimethylolpropane as trifunctional monomer were synthesized. The structure and composition of the samples were characterized by 1 H NMR and FTIR-spectroscopy. The tensile strength, elongation at break and the low temperature elastic recovery were used to characterize the mechanical properties of the synthetic polymers. The results indicate that the branched poly(ether-ester) showed an increment of mechanical and thermal properties with the increasing content of branching agent in the polymer matrix. Moreover, the low temperature elastic recovery and tensile properties of branched poly(ether-ester) were superior comparing to the traditional poly(ether-ester)s.

In situ decorated Ni2P nanocrystal co-catalysts on g-C3N4 for efficient and stable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via a facile co-heating method

Peng Wen,Kefei Zhao,Hui Li,Jiangsheng Li,Jing Li,Qing Ma,Scott M. Geyer,Lin Jiang,Yejun Qiu

Very recently, transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as low-cost and robust co-catalysts for decorating graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution. However, to date, little work has been done regarding the decoration approaches to hybridize TMPs on the g-C3N4 surface with homogeneous dispersion and intimate interfacial contact. Herein, we present a facile and convenient route to in situ incorporate g-C3N4 nanosheets (NSs) and Ni2P nanocrystal (NC) co-catalysts via a one-step co-heating solution approach. The Ni2P/g-C3N4 (in situ) hybrid photocatalyst achieved a far superior H2 production rate (2849.5 μmol g−1 h−1) and durability (no decrease after 4 cycles of reaction within 20 h) compared to the Ni2P/g-C3N4 (self-assembly) sample. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 18.8% at 420 nm was also much higher than that of other TMP co-catalyst loaded g-C3N4 hybrid photocatalysts. A possible Ni(δ+)–N(δ−) chemical coupling in the Ni2P/g-C3N4 (in situ) hybrid composite was proposed and corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The unique Ni(δ+)–N(δ−) chemical bonding states between g-C3N4 and Ni2P significantly accelerate the photo-generated charge-carrier separation and extraction from g-C3N4, as well as maintaining the H2 production durability. We believe that the hybridization route presented in this work will be extended to construct other TMP integrated photocatalysts toward efficient and stable solar water splitting.
