Magnetic core–shell nanomaterial Fe 3 O 4 –SiO 2 –Cu 2 O/Cu was first successfully synthesized using an economical strategy. Using Fe 3 O 4 as a magnetic center for easy recycling and SiO 2 as the connecting layer, Cu elements were evenly and steadily distributed on the surface of the Fe 3 O 4 –SiO 2 –Cu 2 O/Cu core–shell nanostructure. The magnetic catalyst performed outstanding catalytic reduction activity for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and the complete catalytic reduction of 4-NP was achieved within only 5 min. What’s more, the catalyst could be well recycled, and the catalytic efficiency remained more than 90% after being reused 24 times. Graphical abstract

Converting CO 2 to value-added chemicals and fuels by the electrocatalytic reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is a promising strategy for reducing CO 2 emissions and achieving clean energy storage. Herein, Cu 2 O catalysts with various morphologies (hexapod concave rhombic dodecahedrons microcrystals enclosed with (3 3 1), (1 1 1) and (1 0 0) facets (D-Cu 2 O), cubic microcrystals enclosed with (1 0 0) facet (C-Cu 2 O) and octahedron microcrystals with (1 1 1) and (1 0 0) facets (O-Cu 2 O)) are prepared via the wet chemical reduction method. The in-situ formation of D-Cu 2 O/Cu, C-Cu 2 O/Cu and O-Cu 2 O/Cu surface/interface and the conversion mechanism of CO 2 to C 2+ products have been systematically studied. The electrocatalytic performance of D-Cu 2 O/Cu for CO 2 to form C 2+ products is superior to that of C-Cu 2 O/Cu and O-Cu 2 O/Cu, which the Faraday efficiencies (FE) of C 2+ products (ethylene and ethanol) reaches 70 %. The experimental results combined in-situ Raman spectroscopy and density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the good electrochemical performance is relate to the surface reconstruction and facet interface, which provides a positive local electronic environment to enhance the adsorption of *CO intermediates and reduces the energy barrier for the activation the C C coupling. This study will provide a new approach to improve the selectivity of CO 2 RR by interface engineering and surface.

In this work, the advantages of in situ loading, heterojunction construction, and facet regulation were integrated based on the poly-facet-exposed BiOCl single crystal, and a facet-oriented supported heterojunction of Cu2O and BiOCl was fabricated (Cu2O@BiOCl[100]). The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (pNRR) activity of Cu2O@BiOCl[100] was as high as 181.9 μmol·g–1·h–1, which is 4.09, 7.13, and 1.83 times that of Cu2O, BiOCl, and Cu2O@BiOCl-ran (Cu2O randomly supported on BiOCl). Combined with the results of the photodeposition experiment, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization, and DFT calculation, the mechanism of Cu2O@BiOCl[100] for pNRR was discussed. When Cu2O directionally loaded on the [100] facet of BiOCl, electrons generated by Cu2O will be transmitted to the [100] facet of BiOCl through Z-scheme electron transmission. Due to the directional separation characteristics of charge in BiOCl, the electrons transmitted from Cu2O are enriched on the [001] facet of BiOCl, which will together with the original electrons generated by pristine BiOCl act on pNRR, thus greatly improving the activity of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis. Thus, a new construction scheme of biphasic semiconductor heterojunction was proposed, which provides a reference research idea for designing and synthesizing high-performance photocatalysts for nitrogen reduction.

A sandwich-format electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor has been developed for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) detection based on the use of ordered mesoporous carbon-molybdenum disulfide (OMC-MoS 2 ) as a sensor platform and cuprous oxide @ ordered mesoporous carbon-Ru(bpy) 3 2+ (Cu 2 O@OMC-Ru) composites as signal tags. OMC alongside MoS 2 plays a synergistic role in improving the electrochemical performance of the electrode in the electron transfer process. The uniform cubic-shaped Cu 2 O@OMC-Ru nanocrystals display excellent luminous efficiency, with a signal amplification strategy of OMC-MoS 2 synergistic enhancement and Cu 2 O@OMC which is capable of immobilizing more Ru(bpy) 3 2+ serving as a tracing tag to label antibodies. A detectable ECL emission at a Cu 2 O@OMC-Ru nanocrystals modified electrode is initiated at an applied voltage of +1.15 V (scanning range: 0–1.2 V), in the presence of the tripropylamine (TPA) as coreactant. With the increase in AFP concentration, the loading of Cu 2 O@OMC-Ru at the electrode increases. Afterward, the ECL detection of AFP shows a wide linear range from 0.1 pg/mL to 10 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient of 0.9964 and a detection limit of 0.011 pg/mL (S/ N = 3) under the optimal experimental conditions. The recoveries were in the range 91.2–97.1% with RSD varying from 4.8 to 8.5%. Overall, the novel immunosensor has been successfully applied to the analysis of human serum samples, indicating a great potential for application in clinical diagnostics. Graphical abstract

The serious recombination of photogenerated carriers and the photochemical corrosion of the electrode extremely restricted its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance, which could not reach the theoretical photocurrent intensity. However, so far, there are few comprehensive reports on the mechanism of corrosion inhibition and stability improvement of electrodes in photocatalytic degradation. In this paper, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction modified by Cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) co-catalyst was successfully prepared to address the aforementioned issues. Co-Pi completed the holes capture and release process through the change of its own chemical state (Co 2+/3+ →Co 4+ →Co 2+/3+ ), and also affected the energy band bending of the BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction. In addition, the effect mechanism of the Co-Pi film thickness on the PEC performance of the photoanode was systematically discussed in this report. When the deposition amount was 0.05C∙cm −2 , the photocurrent density reached 2.22 mA∙cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which was 2.8 times that of bare BiVO 4 . The LSV curves, EIS and UV–vis absorption spectra reveal the enhanced PEC performance and light stability of the prepared electrode materials. When it is applied to photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O/0.05Co-Pi shows high activity and potential for MB and CIP degradation, and is expected to be stably applied to the field of photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants in water.

In this study, a novel Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O composite, capable of activating O 2 to generate H 2 O 2 and further to reactive oxygen species (ROSs) at a wide pH range, was synthetized, characterized and applied for the degradation of sulfamerazine. In the activation of O 2 by Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O composite, H 2 O 2 was generated from the reaction of O 2 with Al°-CNTs, which could be catalytically decomposed into O 2 − and OH by Cu 2 O, the formed Cu(II) could be rapidly reduced to Cu 2 O by Al°-CNTs in composite, which made Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O composite reusable and decreased the leaching of copper ions into solution. The removal efficiency of SMR and TOC was 73.91 % and 56.80 %, respectively at initial pH = 5.8, T = 20 °C, O 2 flow rate = 100 mL/min, Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O dosage = 2 g/L, SMR = 50 mg/L, and reaction time = 60 min. The removal efficiency of SMR kept almost unchanged and the concentration of copper ions in solution was below 0.5 mg/L. The Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O/O 2 process could be used as a novel catalyst for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants in water and wastewater by Fenton-like process at a wide pH range through the in situ generation of H 2 O 2 .

Developing an efficient photocatalyst for solar-to-hydrogen production is regarded as a promising approach to tackle the energy and environmental challenges that we are currently facing. Herein, the TiO 2 –Cu 2 O nanocomposite is synthesized via a chemical reduction approach at ambient temperature and used as a photocatalyst. The composition and structure characterizations indicate that Cu 2 O particles are loaded on the surface of TiO 2 nanospheres. The photocatalytic performance of the as-obtained materials is evaluated by a solar-to-hydrogen production test. It is found that the optimized TiO 2 –Cu 2 O nanocomposite (TC-20) exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 7139.02 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is nearly 7 times that of pristine TiO 2 . Based on the photoluminescence spectra and photo/electrochemical measurements, the boosted photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance comes from the promoted separation efficiency of photoinduced electron–hole pairs, which originates from the formed p–n heterojunction of the TiO 2 –Cu 2 O nanocomposite.

The extensive utilization of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) as construction insulation material has brought two main troubles to our society: fire risks and toxic hazards. To reduce the fire hazards of RPUF, a layered MoS 2 decorated with Cu 2 O nanoparticles was creativity obtained by hydrothermal technology and facile wet chemical treatment for reducing the toxic product formations of polyurethane nanocomposites during combustion. Due to the low weight ratio of Cu 2 O attached onto MoS 2 , the resulting Cu 2 O-MoS 2 hybrid effectively prevented the MoS 2 nanosheets from restacking. However, the Cu 2 O-MoS 2 -M hybrid was produced by increasing content of Cu 2 O, which has the characteristic stacked layer structure of MoS 2 . Reduced harmful organic volatiles and the toxic gases (e.g. a respective decrease of ca. 28% and 53% for CO and NO x products) were obtained because of synergistic effect between the physical adsorption of MoS 2 and catalysis action of Cu 2 O. Notably, the addition of Cu 2 O-MoS 2 hybrids led to high char formation of the RPUF nanocomposite, indicating the effectively catalytic carbonization property. In addition, the N-Gas model for predicting fire smoke toxicity was developed and demonstrated. Furthermore, the research offers direct proofs of the negative influence of the stacked MoS 2 on reducing the smoke toxicity for RPUF nanocomposites.

In this work, we clearly demonstrate for the first time the use of a p-type semiconductor, Cu2O, as the core unit of a photocathode to set up a new photocathodic analysis platform. With the help of a facile protection strategy, the Cu2O photocathode presented efficient photoelectrochemical performance for H2O2 sensing with a detection limit of 0.15 μM, which allowed the new photocathodic analysis platform to detect H2O2 released from living tumorigenic cells, thus demonstrating its potential application as a sensitive cancer detection probe. The protected TiO2 layer was coated on Cu2O to form a quasi-core/shell structure (TiO2@Cu2O) through a facile sol–gel method, which significantly enhanced the photostability, comparable to the TiO2@Cu2O samples prepared by a complicated atomic layer deposition method. In this new photocathodic analysis platform, the semiconductive metal oxides accomplish a job usually completed by conductive noble metals in an electroanalysis process. We believe that this photocathodic detection strategy opens up a new detection approach, extends the application range of semiconductor materials, and thus sheds light on the further fusing of photoelectrochemical technique with analytical methods.

The activities, selectivities, and stabilities of nanoparticles in heterogeneous reactions are size-dependent. In order to investigate the influencing laws of particle size and temperature on kinetic parameters in heterogeneous reactions, cubic nano-Cu 2 O particles of four different sizes in the range of 40–120 nm have been controllably synthesized. In situ microcalorimetry has been used to attain thermodynamic data on the reaction of Cu 2 O with aqueous HNO 3 and, combined with thermodynamic principles and kinetic transition-state theory, the relevant reaction kinetic parameters have been evaluated. The size dependences of the kinetic parameters are discussed in terms of the established kinetic model and the experimental results. It was found that the reaction rate constants increased with decreasing particle size. Accordingly, the apparent activation energy, pre-exponential factor, activation enthalpy, activation entropy, and activation Gibbs energy decreased with decreasing particle size. The reaction rate constants and activation Gibbs energies increased with increasing temperature. Moreover, the logarithms of the apparent activation energies, pre-exponential factors, and rate constants were found to be linearly related to the reciprocal of particle size, consistent with the kinetic models. The influence of particle size on these reaction kinetic parameters may be explained as follows: the apparent activation energy is affected by the partial molar enthalpy, the pre-exponential factor is affected by the partial molar entropy, and the reaction rate constant is affected by the partial molar Gibbs energy.
In situ microcalorimetry, combined with theoretical models, was used to investigate the reaction kinetic parameters of cubic nano-Cu 2 O, and those effects of particle size and temperature were discussed systematically.

In this work, novel octahedral Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposites were synthesized and first applied in an electrochemical aptasensor to detect thrombin (TB) with the aid of a DNAzyme for signal amplification . The octahedral Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposites have not only simultaneously served as signal amplifying molecules but have also been utilized as an ideal loading platform to immobilize a large number of electroactive substances and recognition probes. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grown directly on the surface of the octahedral Cu 2 O nanocrystals , and the Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposites obtained had the advantages of large surface areas and excellent biocompatibilities. The hemin/G-quadruplex, which was formed by intercalating hemin into the amino terminated thrombin binding aptamer (NH 2 -TBA), and the electroactive toluidine blue (Tb) were immobilized onto the Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposite surfaces through a stable Au-N bond. AuNPs, Cu 2 O and hemin/G-quadruplex co-catalyse the H 2 O 2 in the working buffer to promote the electron transfer of Tb as a multiple signal amplification strategy in order to improve the performance of the electrochemical aptasensor. Under optimal conditions, the designed aptasensor exhibited sensitive detection of TB from 100 fM to 20 nM with a lower detection limit of 23fM. This proposed aptasensor exhibited good sensitivity, high specificity and acceptable reproducibility and could be widely applied in bioassay analysis.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based Cu2O nanocomposites were prepared by a facile one-pot reaction process. The surface morphology, structure and chemical composition of Cu2O–rGO nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Cu2O–rGO modified Pt rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) was successfully fabricated for the photoelectrocatalytic analysis of hydroquinone (HQ). The photoelectrochemical behaviors of HQ were investigated by the hydrodynamic differential pulse voltammetry technique, using the Cu2O–rGO modified Pt RRDE as the working electrode. The effects of pH values, rotation rates, illumination time and applied bias potential have been discussed. The possible electroactive intermediate product, namely hydroxyhydroquinone, was obtained through the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of HQ on the Cu2O–rGO modified Pt disk electrode, which was compulsively transported and could only be detected at the bare Pt ring electrode at around +0.02 V with an oxidation signal. We found that the peak current at +0.02 V had a good linear relationship with the HQ concentration in the range from 5.0 × 10−6 to 1.0 × 10−3 M, with a low limit of detection and excellent reproducibility. The present work has demonstrated that Cu2O–rGO nanocomposites have enhanced photoelectrocatalytic ability for the degradation of organic pollutants and this modified RRDE technique can be potentially applied for the in situ determination of organic pollutants.
