Ce-doping CuO/HZSM-5 as a regenerable sorbent for Adsorption–Oxidation removal of PH3 at low temperature

Jiayu Feng,Fei Wang,Chi Wang,Kai Li,Ping Ning,Xin Sun,Lijuan Jia

A series Ce m Cu n O x /HZSM-5 sorbents were introduced to remove PH 3 in low-temperature and low-oxygen environments. The effects of copper loading and cerium doping on the adsorption–oxidation performance of the sorbents were investigated. Experimental results showed that doping with 1 wt% of cerium (Ce 1 Cu 30 O X /HZSM-5) could significantly improve the performance of the sorbent. The PH 3 breakthrough capacity was identified as 114.36 mg(PH 3 )•g sorbent -1 . In addition, after three thermal regeneration cycles, the sorbent still has ideal performance. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses exhibited that CuO was the main active species, and Ce-doping can increase the chemisorption oxygen on the surface of the sorbent. BET results demonstrated that the introduction of cerium could improve the specific surface area and pore volume of sorbent. Hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS) indicated that cerium species played an important role in uniformly dispersing copper species on the HZSM-5 surface and improving the oxidation performance of sorbent. Moreover, the reaction products and mechanisms were also investigated by XRD, XPS, and in-situ FTIR spectra. The results indicated that the consumption of CuO and the accumulation of phosphorus species (e.g., P, P 2 O 5 , and Cu 3 P) on the surface and inner pores of the sorbent were the primary reasons for the deactivation of the sorbent.

Hydrogen peroxide residue determination in food samples by a glassy carbon electrode modified with CuO-SWCNT-PDDA nanocomposites

Li Liu,Li Wang,Qisheng Liang,Tao Guo,Feng Guo

Copper oxide-single walled carbon nanotube (CuO-SWCNT) hybrid nanostructure and poly-(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for sensitive enzyme-free H 2 O 2 detection has been fabricated via electrostatic interaction strategies. Characterization by XRD, IR and SEM showing that CuO was coated on SWCNT molecular wires, and positively charged PDDA attached to the negatively charged SWCNT, thus CuO-SWCNT-PDDA was constructed. The reduction peak current of H 2 O 2 was significantly increased due to the catalytic property of CuO, which was further enhanced by the synergic effect of SWCNT due to its improvement of electron transfer rate. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 1–1150 µM with a detection limit of 0.39 µM. The electrode coupled with amperometric measurement was successfully applied in H 2 O 2 residue determination in milk and the soaking solutions of chicken paw samples. The results have no remarkable difference compared with the reference UV–Vis method.

Alcohol-thermal synthesis of approximately core-shell structured Al@CuO nanothermite with improved heat-release and combustion characteristics

Kaiwen Shi,Xiaode Guo,Ling Chen,Shanshan Huang,Linlin Zhao,Jie Ji,Xiang Zhou

Metastable intermolecular composites (MICs), also called nanothermites, are attracting wide attention mainly due to the increased interfacial contact area of the fuels and oxidants therein. In this study, an alcohol-thermal technique is adopted to synthesize approximately core-shell structured Al@CuO MICs, in which process copper acetate is used as the precursor of CuO while Al powder with a wide size distribution (50 nm−5 µm in diameter) is used as cores. The energy-release characteristics of the materials are studied by performing thermal analysis, constant-volume combustion cell tests, and high-speed camera imaging of the combustion process . The results show that Al nanoparticles are surrounded by CuO nanoparticles that are with an average diameter of about 10 nm, while micron-sized Al particles are coated by a continuous layer of nanoplatelets that are assembled from CuO nanoparticles. Benefiting from the enhanced interfacial contact compared with that of ultrasonically mixed counterpart, Al@CuO shows a lower apparent activation energy of solid-state interfacial reaction, a higher light intensity, a shorter burning time, a larger pressure output, and a higher pressurization rate. It is also found that equivalent ratio has a great effect on the combustion process, and a slightly fuel-rich formulation is preferred in this study. The synthesis method developed in this study may also be adapted to the preparation of other core-shell structured MICs.

Remarkably improving dielectric response of polymer/hybrid ceramic composites based on 0D/2D-stacked CuO/V2C MXene heterojunction

Qihuang Deng,Furong Zhou,Maolin Bo,Yefeng Feng,Yuehao Huang,Cheng Peng

High dielectric response and electric insulation are desired in high-energy-density polymer/ceramic composites. Low dielectric response is found in polymer composites with semiconductors. To balance a high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, in this work, the polymer-based composites with de novo synthesized V 2 C MXene-CuO hybrid-particles were fabricated. High dielectric response of composites was attributed to strong electron polarization at ceramic/ceramic heterojunction. High insulation was ascribed to fluorine-induced electron-trap effect. The first principle calculations verified the electron-transfer mechanism at V 2 C/CuO van der Waals heterojunctions. Compared with polymer/CuO binary composites, polymer/V 2 C-CuO ternary composites exhibited the improved comprehensive electric properties (remarkably improved dielectric response and slightly damaged insulation). Ternary composite with 10 wt% V 2 C-CuO showed a high dielectric constant of 89, low dielectric loss of 0.23, low conductivity of 6.8 × 10 −7 S m −1 at 100 Hz and high breakdown strength of 204 MV m −1 . This study might enable a facile preparation of cutting-edge nanocomposite dielectrics.

A comparative study of thermal kinetics and combustion performance of Al/CuO, Al/Fe2O3 and Al/MnO2 nanothermites

Jiaxing Song,Tao Guo,Miao Yao,Jialin Chen,Wen Ding,Fengli Bei,Yiming Mao,Zhongshen Yu,Junyi Huang,Xiaonan Zhang,Qin Yin,Shuo Wang

The performance of energetic materials is mainly reflected in two aspects, thermal performance and combustion performance. To figure out the differences in reaction performance, in this paper, thermal and combustion properties of Al/CuO, Al/Fe 2 O 3 and Al/MnO 2 nanothermites were studied respectively by thermal analysis and fast heating wire experiments. According to the thermal analysis, the exothermic peak temperature points of Al/MnO 2 , Al/CuO, Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermites were 552.1 °C, 563.1 °C and 565.3 °C, respectively, while the sequence of activation energy calculated from low to high was Al/Fe 2 O 3 , Al/CuO, Al/MnO 2 nanothermites. By the way, the values of Al/CuO and Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermites showed little difference in temperature and activation energy. The ignition energy characterized by direct current had little difference among them, and the sequence from low to high was Al/MnO 2 , Al/Fe 2 O 3 , Al/CuO nanothermites, corresponding to 1.169 A, 1.214 A and 1.221 A, respectively. As for burning rate, Al/CuO burnt the fastest clearly while the Al/Fe 2 O 3 burnt the longest. In terms of combustion performance, Al/CuO and Al/MnO 2 were basically the same, with little splash of sparks, and the concentrations of combustion energy were better. The combustion phenomenon of Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermite was quite unique with a large number of scattered sparks and poor energy concentration. Finally, the intrinsic reasons for above different phenomena of these three nanothermites were analyzed and discussed.

NiCo/Ni/CuO nanosheets/nanowires on copper foam as an efficient and durable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Xingqiang Wu,Husileng Lee,Hongzhen Liu,Liangjie Lu,Xiujuan Wu,Licheng Sun

Electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen production is a promising solution for the production of renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources, but it is hindered by the sluggish kinetic process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a novel hierarchical core-shell nanoarray NiCo/Ni/CuO/CF was synthesized by assembling Ni–Co hydroxide nanosheets directly on the metallic nickel coated CuO nanowires , as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for alkaline OER. This NiCo/Ni/CuO/CF anode exhibited low overpotentials of 246 mV and 286 mV at current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, and a small Tafel slope of 37.9 mV dec −1 . Moreover, NiCo/Ni/CuO/CF showed robust durability at least 60 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Detailed investigations verified that the unique nanosheets/nanowires architecture with high conductivity metallic nickel layer can expand the exposure of active sites and accelerate the transport of electrons.

Rational Construction of a Triple-Phase Reaction Zone Using CuO-Based Heterostructure Nanoarrays for Enhanced Water Oxidation Reaction

Zhongti Sun,Chuang Zhi,Yingjie Sun,Anyang Bao,Wenqiang Yang,Juan Yang,Jinlian Hu,Guoqiang Liu

The development of high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for the production and conversion of clean energy is paramount yet also full of challenges. Herein, we proposed a simple and universal method to precisely fabricate the hierarchically structured CuO/TMOs loaded on Cu foil (CuO/TMOs/CF) (TMO represents Mn3O4, NiO, CoO, and CuO) nanorod-array electrodes as a highly active and stable OER electrocatalyst, employing Cu(OH)2/CF as a self-sacrificing template by the subsequent H2O2-induced chemical deposition (HiCD) and pyrolysis process. Taking CuO/Mn3O4/CF as an example, we systematically investigated its structure–performance relationship via experimental and theoretical explorations. The enhanced OER activity can be ascribed to the rational design of the nanoarray with multiple synergistic effects of abundant active sites, excellent electronic conductivity of the metallic Cu foil substrate, strong interface charge transfer, and quasi-superhydrophilic/superaerophobic property. Consequently, the optimal CuO/Mn3O4/CF presents an overpotential of 293 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH media, comparable to that of commercial RuO2 (282 mV), delivering excellent durability by the electrolysis of water at a potential of around 1.60 V [vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] without evident degeneration. This work might offer a feasible scheme for developing a hybrid nanoarray OER electrocatalyst via regulating electron transportation and mass transfer.

Design, preparation, and characterization of a novel ZnO/CuO/Al energetic diode with dual functionality: Logic and destruction

Jialu Yang,Jiaheng Hu,Yinghua Ye,Jianbing Xu,Yan Hu,Ruiqi Shen

Self-destructing chips have promising applications for securing data. This paper proposes a new concept of energetic diodes for the first time, which can be used for self-destructive chips. A simple two-step electrochemical deposition method is used to prepare ZnO/CuO/Al energetic diode, in which N-type ZnO and P-type CuO are constricted to a PN junction. This paper comprehensively discusses the material properties, morphology, semiconductor characteristics, and exploding performances of the energetic diode. Experimental results show that the energetic diode has typical rectification with a turn-on voltage of about 1.78 V and a reverse leakage current of about 3 × 10 −4 A. When a constant voltage of 70 V loads to the energetic diode in the forward direction for about 0.14 s or 55 V loads in the reverse direction for about 0.17 s, the loaded power can excite the energetic diode exploding and the current rises to about 100 A. Due to the unique performance of the energetic diode, it has a double function of rectification and explosion. The energetic diode can be used as a logic element in the normal chip to complete the regular operation, and it can release energy to destroy the chip accurately.

Thermal decomposition and combustion behavior of the core-shell Al@AP composite embedded with CuO as a catalyst

Jie-Yao Lyu,Geng Xu,Haorui Zhang,Wenming Yang,Qi-Long Yan

Conventional solid propellants suffer from undesirable combustion performance due to the poor mass and heat transfer between metal fuels and oxidizers, as well as a lack of catalytic active sites between the catalyst and catalyzed objects. Embedding metal fuels and catalysts within the oxidizer has shown promise in improving the overall combustion performance of HTPB/AP/Al and HTPB/AP/RDX/Al composite solid propellants. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for this enhancement remain to be further understood. In this study, we investigated the reactivities of core–shell Al@AP and Al@AP/CuO composites using thermal analysis and combustion diagnostic techniques. The results demonstrated that the decomposition of AP was promoted, as evidenced by a lower peak temperature (415.2–334.7 ℃), higher total heat release (116.4–720.8 J·g −1 ), a transition in the decomposition physical model from the random nucleation and 2D/3D growth of nuclei model to the auto-catalytic model, and increased generation of NO 2 . Furthermore, the Al@AP/CuO propellant pellet exhibited a more stable flame without agglomeration, and the condensed combustion products (CCPs) contained a lower amount of unreacted Al compared to that of conventional mixtures. These findings highlighted the potential of core–shell Al@AP and Al@AP/CuO composites as replacements for discrete ingredients of solid propellants, thereby offering improved performance for next-generation propulsion systems.

One-step green synthesis of Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites for ppt level detection of NO2 at room temperature

Jinjuan Li,Jing Hu,Nan Li,Miao Cheng,Tao Wei,Qianqian Liu,Ruirui Wang,Wanfei Li,Yun Ling,Yafei Zhang,Bo Liu

Conventional metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors often suffer from high operating temperatures, low selectivity, and complex synthesis processes for NO2 detection. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets are coated on NaOH-etched Cu2O/CuO urchin-like spheres to form Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites via a one-step green synthesis method at room temperature (RT). The gas sensor based on this material has been utilized for detecting NO2 at RT (25 °C), and the effects of Cu2O addition and reaction time on the morphology as well as gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared sensor are investigated. Of interest, the sensor based on the 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO-5 composite has an ultra-high response (S = 871) to 5 ppm NO2 gas at RT with a response/recovery time of 32/73 s, and the detection limit is as low as 90.6 ppt. In addition, the gas sensor shows excellent selectivity and repeatability. The excellent sensing performance of the as-prepared 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO sensor is attributed to the framework structure of Cu2O/CuO@rGO, the urchin-like hierarchical structure of the Cu2O/CuO and the synergistic effect of the p–p (Cu2O–CuO) heterojunction. This exploration of the present work offers a good reference for mass, green, and low-power sensing material preparation.

Highly efficient decomplexation of chelated nickel and copper effluent through CuO–CeO2–Co3O4 nanocatalyst loaded on ceramic membrane

Xianhua Ji,Huiyu Liang,Sukai Hu,Bo Yang,Ke Xiao,Gang Yu

A novel CuO–CeO 2 –Co 3 O 4 nanocatalyst loaded on Al 2 O 3 ceramic composite membrane (CCM-S) was synthesized through spraying-calcination method, which can be beneficial to the engineering application of scattered granular catalyst. BET and FESEM-EDX testing revealed that CCM-S possessed a porous character with high BET surface area of 22.4 m 2 /g and flat modified surface with extremely fine particle aggregation. The CCM-S calcined above 500 °C presented excellent anti-dissolution effect due to the formation of crystals. XPS indicated that the composite nanocatalyst possessed the variable valence states, which were conducive to exert the catalytic effect of Fenton-like reaction. Subsequently, the effects of experimental parameters including fabricate method, calcination temperature, H 2 O 2 dosage, initial pH value, and CCM-S amount were further investigated considering the removal efficiency of Ni(II)-complex and COD after decomplexation and precipitation (pH = 10.5) treatment within 90 min. Under the optimal reaction condition, the residual Ni(II)-complex and Cu(II)-complex concentration from actual wastewater was all lower than 0.18 mg/L and 0.27 mg/L, respectively; meanwhile, the removal efficiency of COD was all higher than 50% in the mixed electroless plating effluent. Besides, the CCM-S could still maintain high catalytic activity after a six-cycle test, and the removal efficiency was slightly declined from 99.82% to 88.11%. These outcomes indicated that CCM-S/H 2 O 2 system was provided with a potential applicability on treatment of real chelated metal wastewater.

UV-activated CuO nanospheres modified with rGO nanosheets for ppb-level detection of NO2 gas at room temperature

Haineng Bai,Cheng Feng,Hui Guo,Xiaoli Li,Weifeng Liu,Yamin Feng,Kuili Liu,Dunjun Chen,Youdou Zheng,Fuqiang Guo

Monitoring and reducing NO 2 pollution at room temperature is indispensable for human survival. Thus, we propose a light-activated route (UV light, 100 mW/cm 2 ) to realize a high-performance NO 2 detection based on CuO/rGO gas sensor. The CuO/rGO sensor under UV light illumination exhibits a high response of 22.18–100 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is approximately 1.36 times of the CuO/rGO sensor and 2.31 times of the CuO sensor under dark, respectively. Meanwhile, under UV light illumination, the CuO/rGO sensor has a fast response/recovery speed of 10.9/30.9 s to 20 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is obviously better than that under dark. Moreover, the light-activated CuO/rGO sensor has excellent repeatability, selectivity, ultra-low detection limit (50 ppb) and long-term stability. The significantly appealing gas-sensing performance of CuO/rGO sensor is mainly ascribed to the mesoporous structure, high specific surface area and plentiful oxygen vacancy of CuO/rGO nanocomposites . More attractively, the photo-generated carriers and formed heterojunction also greatly improve the carrier migration in the context of the NO 2 /CuO/rGO interaction, enhancing the gas-sensing performance of gas sensor. Our work will provide insight in utilizing light illumination to realize ultrasensitive and room-temperature detection of ppb-level NO 2 gas.
