To address the disadvantage of poor degradation effect of Fe 2+ /peroxydisulfate (PDS) system, a co-catalyst was introduced in this study to construct a molybdenum (Mo)/Fe 2+ /PDS system for the degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7), and the degradation rate could reach 95.67%. The effects of different parameters (initial pH, Fe 2+ concentration, etc.) on the degradation effect of AO7 in this system were investigated, and the optimal degradation conditions were obtained by combining cost analysis. Cycling experiments showed that Mo had good stability. The co-catalytic mechanism of Mo powder was determined using X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The effects of different inorganic anions on AO7 were discussed: Cl − and NO 3 − had little effect on degradation, while SO 4 2− and HCO 3 − both inhibited the removal of AO7 from the system to different degrees, with HCO 3 − showing a greater inhibition than SO 4 2− . The main active radicals were identified as sulfate radical (SO 4 ·− ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH). In addition, intermediates were identified, and the attack sites were determined by combining the highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels and the Fukui index to hypothesize the degradation pathways. Toxicity indicators such as the mutagenicity of AO7 and intermediates were evaluated, and the overall trend of toxicity was decreasing. This study is expected to provide an efficient treatment process for dye wastewater.

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) have emerged as promising materials for photocatalysis due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, yet achieving efficient charge separation and selective oxidation reactions remains a significant challenge. In this study, we report the synthesis of Fe 3+ -doped CsPbBr 3 /SiO 2 nanocomposites (Fe-PNCs/SNPs) with gradient energy levels, designed to enhance photocatalytic performance. Our results demonstrate that Fe 3+ doping introduces mid-gap states, promotes photoinduced charge separation, and generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as O 2 − and OH radicals under sunlight-simulating light irradiation from a 300 W Xe arc lamp. The Fe 20 -PNCs/SNPs catalyst achieved over 99 % conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with high selectivity and stability in the ethanol under ambient conditions. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited excellent recyclability and broad substrate tolerance. These findings highlight the innovative design of gradient energy levels in perovskite nanocomposites, offering a new strategy for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency in selective organic transformations.

In this study, a novel fluorescent nanoprobe (ZIF-90@FSS) was constructed using a zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton (ZIF-90) incorporating sodium fluorescein within its porous structure. Notably, this nanoprobe exhibited regular fluorescence “off” detection performance of Fe 3+ in actual samples and living cells. The concentration range of 0–150 ng/mL exhibited a lowest detection limit of 0.26 ng/mL. A nanofiber paper-based platform (VL78/ZIF-90@FSS) was further developed by coupling the prepared nanoprobe to a multi-dimensional fiber paper via C N bonds, enabling rapid visual white light colorimetric and fluorescence imaging of Fe 3+ within 2 min. The constructed nanoprobe and its paper-based detection platforms demonstrated a stable recovery range in tap water, beer, and soy sauce samples during spiking-recovery assessments. The recovery rates ranged from 98.46 % to 108.24 % for the nanoprobe and from 91.75 % to 108.71 % for the nanofiber paper-based platform. Therefore, the developed nano-fluorescent sensor and paper-based nanofiber sensing platform offer a promising strategy for the visual detection of Fe 3+ , while also presenting novel and valuable methods to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of Fe 3+ in living cells.

In this study, we successfully synthesized green luminescent carbon dots by using green tea residue as the precursor of carbon source. Based on the internal filter effect (IFE), the fluorescence emission intensity of the probe decreased significantly with the increase of Fe 3 + concentration. Based on this, a linear relationship between Fe 3 + concentration and the fluorescence emission intensity of the probe was established to semi-quantitatively detect Fe 3 + . The results showed that the linear range was 1–400 μM, and the detection limit was 3.58 μM. In addition, the probe was further applied to actual samples, and it was found that the recovery rate was between 97.75% and 104.59%, and the relative standard deviation was below 1.81%. These findings underscore the considerable potential of the carbon dots for practical Fe 3+ detection applications. In a further application, the fluorescent carbon dots were diluted and directly employed to stain Caco-2 cells. Remarkably, even after 10 and 20-fold dilutions, the Caco-2 cells displayed vivid fluorescence at the green excitation wavelength. This outcome suggests a promising avenue for the application of fluorescent carbon dots in the field of biology.

In this study, a simple and efficient method for synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) has been developed through a one-step hydrothermal process using hedyotis diffusa willd. The morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties of the resulting N-CQDs were thoroughly characterized. The synthesized N-CQDs exhibited a spherical shape with an average particle size of 4.32 nm, and the crystal lattice spacing was determined to be 0.17 nm. Notably, the N-CQDs demonstrated a significant fluorescence quenching effect in the presence of Fe 3 ⁺ ions, exhibiting high selectivity and sensitivity. The detection limit for Fe 3 ⁺ ions was found to be 6.62 × 10⁻ 3 μmol/L within a linear range of 0.01–0.1 μmol/L. Furthermore, the N-CQDs displayed significant antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus ) and Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli ) bacteria, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.055 mg/mL and 0.038 mg/mL, respectively. These findings suggest that the N-CQDs can serve as an effective fluorescent sensor and a promising antibacterial agent. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of N-CQDs from natural plant sources, highlighting their potential applications as both fluorescent sensors and antimicrobial agents.

The combination of type I photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted increased interest in the clinical treatment of tumors because of the suitability of oxygen-independent therapy for hypoxic tumors and the maintenance of high PTT efficacy by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Particularly, near-infrared (NIR) organic molecules have become a research hotspot because of their good reproducibility and low toxicity. However, the majority of them are still far from meeting the clinical requirements for phototherapeutic efficacy and biosafety. Herein, a croconium derivative, CR-497 , was synthesized with benzo[ e ]indole and (thiophen-2-yl)piperazine and complexed with Fe 3+ ( CR-497 -Fe 3+ ) and a tumor-targeting peptide to construct the CR-497 -Fe 3+ nanoparticle (NP) platform. At the breast tumor site, the released CR-497 exhibited pH activation for NIR fluorescence (NIRF) and photoacoustic (PA) imaging, type I PDT, and PTT. In the tumor microenvironment, where glutathione (GSH) and H 2 O 2 were overexpressed, the accumulated Fe 3+ induced ferroptosis and •OH generation. ROS from chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and PDT and lipid peroxidation from ferroptosis inhibited the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and maintained the high efficacy of PTT. In a mouse model, CR-497 -Fe 3+ NPs accurately located the tumor by NIRF and PA bioimaging and exhibited the combined therapeutic effects of ferroptosis, CDT, PDT and PTT with good biosafety. This study presents an effective strategy for the design of tumor-targeted single-component croconium nanoplatforms that exhibit excellent biosafety and enhanced efficacy for type I PDT and PTT.

Solvent extraction is an effective method for addressing the difficult separation of Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ in sulfuric acid media. Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (P204) has been shown to extract Fe 3+ from systems where Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ coexist. However, the issue of co-extraction of chromium remains. Considering that 2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexylphosphate (P507) and P204 are the same class of extractants, this study proposes the use of P507 to separate Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ . Under optimal conditions, the primary extraction efficiency for Fe 3+ reached 99.65%, with Cr 3+ being co-extracted at only 5.93%, and Al being co-extracted by 8.66%. The co-extracted Al 3+ was removed by a three-stage cross-current scrubbing process. After three-stage counter-current stripping, selective stripping of iron was achieved, leading to the effective separation of Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ . To date, no studies have reported on the role of sulfate ions in the extraction of Fe 3+ by P507. This study for the first time, reveals a new extraction mechanism in which sulfate ions (SO 4 2− ) play a role in the formation of complexes during the extraction process. It also provides a technological foundation for the further recovery of high-purity Cr 3+ and offers valuable insights into the behavior of sulfate ions during the extraction process.

Portable and reusable solid-state fluorescence sensors have received much attention in the field of metal ion detection as a superior alternative to traditional liquid-based fluorescence sensors. In this study, a novel HHSS@LaVO 4 :Eu 3+ /polyacrylamide/sodium alginate (HLE/PS) hydrogel was successfully constructed for portable dynamic fluorescence switching detection of Fe 3+ and encryption of security information. The HLE/PS hydrogel was synthesized from HHSS@LaVO 4 :Eu 3+ fluorescent nanofillers embedded in a semi-IPN network of polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium alginate (SA). The HLE/PS hydrogel has demonstrated excellent performance in the detection of Fe 3+ in aqueous solutions with high selectivity, high sensitivity, fast response (8 min), wide detection range (2–1000 μM), low detection limit (0.78 μM) and ease of use. It can be reused up to five times, underlining its utility and economy as a good performance fluorescence sensor. Notably, the quenching of Fe 3+ fluorescence by ultrasmall LaVO 4 :Eu 3+ nanoparticles on HHSS supports was significantly enhanced compared to conventional large-sized rare earth phosphor fillers. Additionally, by exploiting the reversible fluorescence switching function of the HLE/PS hydrogel, we further developed a high-security multi-layer information encryption platform. Finally, we thoroughly investigated the fluorescence response mechanism of HLE/PS hydrogels to Fe 3+ ions. This work not only provides a representative case for the preparation of packed rare-earth fluorescent hydrogels, but also demonstrates their potential as multifunctional smart luminescent materials.

In this study, various of MgFeTi-LDH/g-C3N4 photocatalytic materials had been successfully synthesized through self-assembly, and the physicochemical and photoelectric properties were thoroughly characterized. Optical performance characterizations of band gaps and VB-XPS spectra revealed that the EVB and ECB alignment of MgFeTi (3:1)-LDH/g-C3N4 composites are consistent with the fundamental characteristics of S-type heterojunctions. MgFeTi (3:1)-LDH/g-C3N4 coupled with sodium persulfate activation for TCH degradation achieved nearly 100% removal efficiency under visible light, surpassing previously reported catalysts. Moreover, five repeated tests of MgFeTi (3:1)-LDH/g-C₃N₄ showed negligible change in the removal rate of TCH, indicating its potential value for industrial applications. Furthermore, the catalytic degradation pathway and mechanism for MgFeTi (3:1)-LDH/g-C3N4 have been elucidated through LC-MS analysis, radical capture, and characterization. In addition, the high efficiency of TCH degradation is attributed to the synergy of Fe3+、Fe2+, SPS, and active species such as •OH, SO4•−, and •O2−. Finally, the QSAR analysis and OD600 values suggest that the degradation pathway and time lead to a reduction in toxicity and the potential risk to the degradation liquid. This study offers simple, economical approach to completely degradation TCH, also providing practical application prospects in wastewater treatment.

A versatile dihydroxylsalicylaldazine-containing fluorene (DHSF) compound was easily prepared through a one-step reaction. DHSF simultaneously exhibited solvent-regulating fluorescent OFF–ON behavior toward Al3+/Cr3+ and a dynamic OFF–ON–OFF fluorescent response toward Fe3+ in different aqueous DMF solutions with multiple absorption–ratiometric signals. These could be mainly attributed to the different binding modes between enol–keto isomers and Fe3+/Al3+/Cr3+, as proved by DFT calculation and IR spectroscopy results. Furthermore, DHSF displayed fluorescent OFF–ON–OFF and absorption–ratiometric dual responses to increasing ClO− amounts. These results, together with the fluorescent ON–OFF changes from the metal displacement of the DHSF–Al3+/Fe3+ system by Cu2+, show that monomolecular DHSF is a versatile chemosensor for sensitively detecting Al3+/Cr3+/Cu2+ and quantitatively analysing Fe3+/ClO− with practical application potential.

Rare-earth doped carbon dots represent a new generation of nanomaterials, which achieve the functional modulation and property optimization of carbon dots materials. In this paper, Eu 3+ -doped carbon dots (Eu-CDs) were prepared employing a one-step hydrothermal approach. The structure and properties of Eu-CDs were characterize using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, etc. Eu-CDs exhibit a series of distinct emission peaks at 467, 595, 620 and 702 nm when excited at 395 nm, respectively. An “off-on” strategy for detecting of Fe 3+ and ascorbic acid was established on the basis of changes in luminescence peak intensity ratios of the CDs and Eu 3+ , which effectively reduces the detection limit compared with single-peak detection. The I 467 / I 595 of Eu-CDs exhibits an excellent linear association with the concentrations of Fe 3+ or ascorbic acid, and the limit of detections are 0.15 and 0.13 μmol/L, respectively, indicating that Eu-CDs can be applied for the quantitative measurement of Fe 3+ and ascorbic acid, and are successfully applied in real samples.

A novel type of humic acid-based nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) exhibiting strong blue fluorescence emission was synthesized using a straightforward hydrothermal method, with coal-derived humic acid and ethanolamine serving as precursors. It was observed that the incorporation of Fe 3+ ions quenches the fluorescence emission of the N-GQDs, the classification of quenching is recognized as static quenching; however, the addition of l -lysine to the N-GQDs/Fe 3+ system effectively restores this fluorescence. Building on these findings, this study further investigates the potential application of N-GQDs as an “on-off-on” fluorescent sensor for detecting both Fe 3+ and l -lysine. It has been established that N-GQDs exhibit commendable selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe 3+ , achieving a detection limit (LoD) of 0.41 μM. Furthermore, the stable N-GQDs/Fe 3+ complex demonstrates significant detection sensitivity to l -lysine in aqueous environments, with a LoD of 1.06 μM. The experimental results indicate that the synthesized N-GQDs possess favorable properties including excellent fluorescence intensity, dispersibility, and water solubility. The developed sensor exhibits considerable potential for improvement and holds promising applications in the domain of water quality monitoring. Additionally, the fluorescence selectivity of N-GQDs towards Fe 3+ was elucidated through calculations involving frontier molecular orbitals.
