Relatively scant work was related to polynaphthalene (PN) and its derivatives because of the unique nonlinear optical properties which make PN and its derivatives owning potential applications in various domains. According to relevant studies, the pursuit for the synthesis of high quality PN films is a great challenge for the applications of PN. To achieve high quality polymer films, three bridged naphthalene derivatives were designed, and finally two crosslinked PN exhibiting space network were electrosynthesized, respectively, by direct anodic oxidation from 1,6-bis(naphthalen-2-yloxy)hexane and 1,4-bis((naphthalen-2-yloxy)methyl)benzene in mixed electrolyte of dichloromethane containing boron trifluoride diethyl etherate. Furthermore, as-formed conducting films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, spectroscopic analysis, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. And the series of characterizations indicated that films hold high stability and good blue-light-emitting property. Meanwhile, these polymer films were smooth, shiny, and flexible easily being processed into various shapes by conventional mechanical methods. Consequently, these high quality PN films will facilitate their potential applications as blue-light-emitting materials in organic light-emitting diode. Because di(naphthalen-2-yl) terephthalate was difficult to electropolymerize, the effects of bridged spacers to polymerization were also discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A visible-light-driven CO 2 reduction optical fiber is fabricated using graphene-like nitrogen-doped composites and hollow quartz optical fibers to achieve enhanced activity, selectivity, and light utilization for CO 2 photoreduction. The composites are synthesized from a lead-based metal–organic framework (TMOF-10-NH 2 ) and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet (CNNS) via electrostatic self-assembly. The TMOF-10-NH 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (TMOF/CNNS) photocatalyst with an S-type heterojunction is coated on optical fiber. The TMOF/CNNS coating, which has a bandgap energy of 2.15 eV, has good photoinduced capability at the coating interfaces, high photogenerated electron–hole pair yield, and high charge transfer rate. The conduction band potential of the TMOF/CNNS coating is more negative than that for CO 2 reduction. Moreover, TMOF facilitates the CO desorption on its surface, thereby improving the selectivity for CO production. High CO 2 photoreduction and selectivity for CO production is demonstrated by the TMOF/CNNS-coated optical fiber with the cladding/core diameter of 2000/1000 µm, 10 wt% TMOF in CNNS, coating thickness of 25 µm, initial CO 2 concentration of 90 vol%, and relative humidity of 88% RH under the excitation wavelength of 380–780 nm. Overall, the photocatalytic hollow optical fiber developed herein provides an effective and efficient approach for the enhancement of light utilization efficiency of photocatalysts and selective CO 2 reduction.

Due to their excellent optical performance, lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have been widely used in optoelectronic devices. However, the presence of surface defects such as localized trap states severely hampers their practical application in optoelectronic fields. In this work, we have developed a simple method to reduce surface defects by introducing sulfuric acid after the nucleation of CsPbI3 PeNCs is complete. Sulfate ions effectively interact with the exposed metal lead ions on the surface of perovskite NCs, leading to surface passivation. This process represses nonradiative recombination and significantly enhances the luminescence efficiency of PeNCs. Moreover, the passivated CsPbI3 PeNCs with SO42– exhibit a lower overall energy-level structure compared to that of pristine CsPbI3 PeNCs, promoting improved electron injection. Benefiting from this highly effective passivation strategy, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on SO42–-passivated PeNCs exhibit an optimal external quantum yield of 9.94% and luminance of 2182 cd m–2, surpassing the performance of LEDs made from pristine PeNCs.

Surface wettability switching is of great importance in both theoretical studies and practical applications. The surface wettability switching of thermally responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) by altering temperature has been widely discussed. However, meeting diverse application requirements by selectively switching the local wettability of thermally responsive SMP surfaces remains a significant challenge. Here, we prepared a photocontrolled wettability-switchable SMP surface by doping graphene oxide into a thermally responsive SMP, utilizing a template method. By leveraging the excellent photothermal conversion properties of graphene oxide and the thermal-responsive shape memory properties of SMP, the surface can reversibly change the surface morphology through loading deformation and near-infrared light irradiation. This enables achieving reversible switching of wettability between a superhydrophobic low-adhesion state and a hydrophobic high-adhesion state. The flexibility of near-infrared light irradiation allows for localized wettability switching on the surface by varying the position of light irradiation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of this photocontrolled SMP surface for droplet capture and remote, contactless selective release. This showcases the versatility of this surface for various application needs and highlights its immense potential in droplet-based microreactions, bioassays, chemical synthesis, and other applications.

Photodynamic antibacterial materials based on reactive oxygen species (ROS), with the advantages of nonresistance and avoiding common issues such as nonspecific cellular toxicity associated with many antibiotic drugs, are gradually emerging as an attractive treatment modality with significant potential for antibacterial therapy. However, the effectiveness and safety of current photodynamic antibacterial materials still need to be improved. In this study, porphyrin-based metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoflowers were designed and synthesized via a solvent-thermal method using meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) as the organic ligands and Cu2+ as the coordinating metal ions, which show visible light responsive photodynamic and photothermal antibacterial effects. As a precise stimulus, visible light can effectively control the production of ROS, enabling controllable photodynamic effects and achieving remarkable photothermal antibacterial efficacy. The designed porphyrin-based MOF nanoflowers have successfully demonstrated broad-spectrum, nonresistant antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi while exhibit excellent biocompatibility. This work paves the way for a safe and effective approach to photodynamic antibacterial therapy.

Optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) can be tuned by an external field, however, it will spontaneously restore to the original state after the field is removed. Here, we introduce diselenide dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) into CLCEs, whose optical properties can be reversibly and precisely tuned under the combined action of force and light. The tuned optical properties will be written into and remembered by the CLCEs, thus a programming effect is achieved. The prepared dynamical diselenide bonded CLCE films have the typical reversibly mechanochromism property, and high-resolution colourful patterning can be programmed by adjusting exposure time and intensity of masked visible-light under different tensile or compressive strain states. The DCB-CLCEs combine the novel anisotropy of CLCEs and the dynamic chain exchangeable ability of DCBs, which endows the materials with reprogrammable optical properties. We demonstrate a simple strategy of writing naked-eye high-resolution colourful patterning into a film with mechanochromism property by thermal or visible-light, it shows great potential in display devices, anticounterfeiting labels, sensors, optical films and smart materials.

The human cannot detect light with a wavelength exceeding 700 nm, primarily due to limitations in the physiological structure of the human eye. However, in certain specific scenarios, the ability to detect near-infrared (NIR) light proves to be extremely valuable. To attain this desired capability, NIR up conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared and doped in the optical lens materials, aiming to obtain a NIR light “visible” optical lens. It is demonstrated that the doping of UCNPs in the optical lens materials does not significantly impact on their mechanical properties, optical properties, surface properties and it exhibits excellent biocompatibility in cell and animal experiments. More importantly, the UCNPs doping can convert NIR light into visible light within the material effectively and stably. The eyes can “see” the NIR light after wearing such UCNPs doped optical lens. Such NIR light visible optical lens could have great potential in actual applications.Graphical Abstract

Although bio-adhesives have achieved many progresses, creating robust bio-glues that could withstand the complex physiological microenvironment remains a significant challenge such as limited bioadhesion strength and stability, as well as slow adhesion speed caused by pH, enzymes, salt, and bacteria. Herein, a series of strong bio-glues are successfully fabricated using a polyphenol–acrylamide–ruthenium crosslinking (PARC) reaction under visible light irradiation, involving acrylamides radical polymerization, polyphenols (extracts) coupling reaction, and ruthenium-mediated photochemistry. The resulting bio-glues underwent rapid sol–gel transition and exhibited adhesive properties within a short of time (≈5 s), which could quickly bond to various bio-tissues. Moreover, these bioadhesives demonstrate high adhesion strength and stability with mucosal tissue in the oral environment, effectively promoting rat and pig oral mucosal wound healing. It is anticipated that this class of visible light-responsive polyphenolic bio-glues could serve as a robust tool for addressing oral mucosal defects in the clinic, offering a promising alternative to traditional treatments for oral mucosal disorders.

Suppressing trap-assisted nonradiative losses through passivators is a prerequisite for efficient perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, the complex bonding between passivators and perovskites severely suppresses the passivation process, which still lacks comprehensive understanding. Herein, the number, category, and degree of bonds between different functional groups and the perovskite are quantitatively assessed to study the passivation dynamics. Functional groups with high electrostatic potential and large steric hindrance prioritize strong bonding with organic cations and halides on the perfect surface, leading to suppressed coordination with bulky defects. By modulating the binding priorities and coordination capacity, hindrance from the intense interaction with perfect perovskite is significantly reduced, leading to a more direct passivation process. Consequently, the near-infrared PeLED without external light out-coupling demonstrates a record external quantum efficiency of 24.3% at a current density of 42 mA cm −2 . In addition, the device exhibits a record-level-cycle ON/OFF switching of 20 000 and ultralong half-lifetime of 1126.3 h under 5 mA cm −2 . An in-depth understanding of the passivators can offer new insights into the development of high-performance PeLEDs.

Light-induced ferroelectric polarization in 2D layered ferroelectric materials holds promise in photodetectors with multilevel current and reconfigurable capabilities. However, translating this potential into practical applications for high-density optoelectronic information storage remains challenging. In this work, an α-In 2 Se 3 /Te heterojunction design that demonstrates spatially resolved, multilevel, nonvolatile photoresponsivity is presented. Using photocurrent mapping, the spatially localized light-induced poling state (LIPS) is visualized in the junction region. This localized ferroelectric polarization induced by illumination enables the heterojunction to exhibit enhanced photoresponsivity. Unlike previous reports that observe multilevel polarization enhancement in electrical resistance, the device shows nonvolatile photoresponsivity enhancement under illumination. After polarization saturation, the photocurrent increases up to 1000 times, from 10 −12 to 10 −9 A under the irradiation of a 520 nm laser with a power of 1.69 nW, compared to the initial state in a self-driven mode. The photodetector exhibits high detectivity of 4.6×10 10 Jones, with a rise time of 27 µs and a fall time of 28 µs. Furthermore, the device's localized poling characteristics and multilevel photoresponse enable spatially multiplexed optical information storage. These results advance the understanding of LIPS in 2D ferroelectric materials, paving the way for optoelectronic information storage technologies.

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have been explored as single-component white light emitters for applications in solid-state lighting. Herein, we report a zero-dimensional (0D) In-based OIMH (TMPDA)[InCl5(H2O)] (TMPDA = N,N,N′,N’-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine), which crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric P212121 space group and contains hydrogen bonds between the adjacent [InCl5(H2O)]2– octahedra in structure. It exhibits a large optical band gap (4.10 eV) and dual-band emission under UV light. Spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculation indicate that the high (404 nm)- and low (513 nm)-energy emissions are attributed to the bound excitons in organic ligands and self-trapped excitons in [InCl5(H2O)]2– units, respectively. It is found that Sb doping in this 0D hybrid provides additional orange (590 nm) emission assigned to the 3P1 → 1S0 triplet radiative recombination. By adjusting the doping level, the emission color can be turned from turquoise to orange, and interestingly, a single-component white-light emission is realized by balancing the high-energy emission from organic ligand, the turquoise emission from [InCl5(H2O)]2–, and the orange one from [SbCl5(H2O)]2–. This work not only provides a new OIMH showing the single-component white light emission but also demonstrates the potential of In-based hybrids with hydrogen bonds for solid-state luminescence.

The photodegradation of propranolol (PRO) by BiOCl0.5I0.5/persulfate under visible light was comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrated a significant increase in the removal efficiency of PRO under visible light irradiation, achieved by the combination of BiOCl0.5I0.5 solid solution and persulfate (PS). The photocatalytic activity of the system was found to be enhanced with an increase in the pH value. Additionally, the addition of a certain amount of PS improved the degradation of PRO. The presence of typical water constituents, Cl− and NO3−, had a negligible impact on PRO removal. In contrast, the increasing concentration of humic acid (HA) exhibited apparent inhibition of PRO degradation. Furthermore, radical scavenging experiments revealed that the removal of PRO was primarily facilitated by active free species, including h+ and ˙O2−. The presence of characteristic peaks of ˙OH (peak ratio 1 : 2 : 2 : 1), 1O2 and ˙SO4− in the EPR spectrum indicates that these three radicals are also involved in the degradation process. Moreover, the BiOCl0.5I0.5/PS system demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity, as well as favorable reusability and stability. This study offers new insights into the photocatalytic degradation of PRO, presenting a promising approach in this field.
