Electrolysis of neutral saline wastewater/seawater enables sustainable hydrogen production but faces sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics and poor durability in chloride-rich media. Herein, a novel Cu 2 S/Amorphous/Cu–Ni–Mo heterostructure electrocatalyst, prepared by electrodeposition and atomic layer deposition (ALD), was introduced to address these challenges. The electrode was synthesized by electrodepositing a Cu–Ni–Mo coating onto a stainless steel substrate, followed by in-situ sulfurization using ALD technology to form an amorphous layer, yielding a heterostructure with optimized interfacial properties. This heterostructure electrode exhibited an overpotential of 63.29 mV at −10 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation at −100 mA cm −2 for over 180 h in 0.5 mol/L NaCl +1 mol/L phosphate buffered saline (PBS). A 10 cm × 10 cm electrode was successfully fabricated using this scalable method, which exhibited uniform morphology and stability exceeding 240 h. This work advances HER performance and scalability in neutral environments, facilitating industrial-scale electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abnormal levels of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) in the human body are valuable indicators for monitoring human health, as they are associated with certain diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to develop sensitive and simultaneous analytical techniques for DA and UA in diagnosing the related diseases. Herein, the Co- and Mo- doped carbon nanofibers (Co, Mo@CNFs) electrochemical biosensor was developed successfully for the sensitive and accurate simultaneous detection of DA and UA. A straightforward electrospinning technique followed by a carbonization process was employed for the synthesis of Co, Mo@CNFs, and the encapsulation of Co and Mo within CNFs served to not only prevent nanoparticle agglomeration, thus providing more active sites, but also to facilitate rapid electron transfer . By incorporating Co and Mo into CNFs, the electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode was greatly improved due to the beneficial conductivity and synergistic effects of transition metals . This enhancement effectively addressed issues such as the overlapping anodic peaks that occur when DA and UA are oxidized concurrently. Due to the mentioned synergistic contributions, the modified Co, Mo@CNFs electrode (Co, Mo@CNFs/GCE) achieved remarkable sensitivity for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA, while also exhibiting strong anti-interference ability. The detection limits for DA and UA were 2.35 nmol L −1 and 0.16 μmol L −1 , respectively. We applied the developed Co, Mo@CNFs/GCE electrochemical biosensor to detect DA and UA in 50-fold diluted serum and urine samples. The results affirm the biosensor's reliability and precision. Moreover, the developed Co, Mo@CNFs/GCE biosensor demonstrated excellent performance in simultaneously detecting DA and UA, providing an efficient and dependable detection approach for clinical diagnosis and bioanalysis .

The mining of strategic U-Mo deposits invariably leads to the generation of wastewater with significant risks of radioactive and heavy metal pollution. This study explores a novel process for the simultaneous precipitation-adsorption of U and Mo from mine drainage, with subsequent solidification of the radioactive Fe(OH) 3 sediments using tailings. The results demonstrate that, under specific conditions, such as 33.6 mg/L Fe 3+ and pH 6.0–7.0, more than 97 % of U and Mo can be efficiently co-removed, and the treated water exhibits a gross α radioactivity of less than 0.2 Bq/L. The U-bearing Fe(OH) 3 sediments are transformed into general solid wastes, exhibiting low α radioactivity of less than 1.0 Bq/kg for 238 U, 232 Th or 226 Ra, after being blended with tailings in a mass ratio of 1:50. The reaction, adsorption and solidification mechanisms are further elucidated. The U and Mo are primarily precipitated and adsorbed in the forms of UO 2 (OH) 2 and Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 respectively. The U-bearing Fe(OH) 3 particles are firmly encapsulated by negatively charged particles of phlogopite, quartz, and orthoclase, and agglomerate into large particles within the solidification product, thereby reducing U dissolution in simulated acid rain. Ultimately, a sustainable treatment flowsheet is established for the management of U-Mo ore mine drainage and tailings.

Non-precious metal cocatalysts and interfacial charge transfer dynamics have long been recognized as critical research frontiers in photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. In this study, we demonstrate a highly efficient Mo 2 C/CdS composite photocatalyst, where the construction of Mo-S chemical bonds significantly enhances interfacial charge transfer. Mo 2 C, as an effective non-noble metal cocatalyst, facilitates the efficient acceptance of photogenerated electrons from CdS. The formation of Mo-S bonds substantially boosts the hydrogen evolution activity. Remarkably, the optimized 7 wt% Mo 2 C/CdS composite achieves a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 19.94 mmol h -1 g -1 , representing a 51-fold enhancement compared to pristine CdS (0.39 mmol h -1 g -1 ). Furthermore, this hydrogen evolution rate surpasses that of the Pt/CdS composite by 296%. Synchrotron radiation analysis provides direct evidence for the formation of Mo-S chemical bonds at the interface. Additionally, DFT calculations reveal that the Gibbs free energy change for hydrogen adsorption on Mo 2 C/CdS is reduced by -0.23 eV, further confirming the favorable thermodynamics for hydrogen generation. This study not only validates Mo 2 C as a promising cocatalyst but also highlights its potential to replace the benchmark Pt in photocatalytic water splitting. The findings offer valuable insights by intentionally constructing interfacial chemical bonds to accelerate charge transfer and significantly enhance photocatalytic performance.

Water contamination caused by textile and industrial dyes is currently among the most important issues facing humanity that require urgent attention. Organic pollutants are harmful and can cause cancer in both humans and aquatic life. Even small amounts of these pollutants in water can lead to grave health problems. One promising way to clean up these pollutants is through degradation, using oxysulfide-based photocatalysts. These materials are effective because of their advanced optical and structural properties. The Sn-Mo(O,S) 3 catalysts were prepared through an easy precipitation process conducted at low temperatures. Different techniques were used to examine the catalyst's shape, structure, electrical properties, chemical makeup, and how it interacts with light. The Sn-Mo(O,S) 3 oxy-sulfide nanoparticle was successfully used to break down organic pollutants through photocatalytic processes. Among the samples made, the SMOS-25 catalyst showed the best performance in breaking down methylene blue dye. The effectiveness of the SMOS-25 catalyst was tested by seeing how well they could break down organic dye pollutant when exposed to visible light. The SMOS-25 nanoparticle was able to remove 98.9 % MB dye from water within 105 min under visible light. In this system, the main substance responsible for breaking down the dye is hydroxyl radical ( • OH).

Electronic structure modulation of active sites plays a critical role in oxidation catalysis reactions but remains insufficiently explored in polyoxometalate (POM) systems. Here, we employ Anderson-type polyoxomolybdates (XMo 6 , X = Fe, Co, Ni) as molecular platforms to elucidate how central transition metals regulate the electronic properties and catalytic behavior of Mo=O sites. Through atomic-precision synthesis and heterogenization on ionic liquid-modified h -BN, a series of MMo 6 -C 4 /BN were constructed and enabled precise structure–activity correlation in oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Among them, NiMo 6 -C 4 /BN exhibits the best performance, achieving 100 % DBT removal within 50 min at 60 °C. DFT calculations reveal that the electron-withdrawing Ni center optimally modulates the Mo d-band center, resulting in the most favorable reaction energetics, which fundamentally explains the superior activity. Furthermore, Radical trapping and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements identified • OH and • O 2 − as the key reactive species involved in the oxidation process. The catalyst also demonstrated strong practical potential by achieving a 69 % desulfurization rate in real diesel. This work establishes a general strategy for electronic tuning in POM catalysts and provides molecular-level insights into active site engineering for advanced oxidative catalysis.

Seawater splitting provides a sustainable approach for large-scale hydrogen production without straining freshwater resources. However, the challenge lies in achieving high catalytic activity and stability due to electrocatalyst deactivation from structural degradation, poor corrosion resistance, and surface instability in both alkaline and seawater electrolysis. To address this, we propose a novel strategy combining Fe-doping with dual-phase lattice strain engineering in nickel-molybdenum transition metal nitrides (TMNs). The Fe-doped Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 N electrocatalyst exhibits compressive lattice strains of −4.52% and −2.91% in the Ni 3 Mo 3 N and Mo 2 N phases, respectively, enhancing its structural integrity and electronic properties. Consequently, Fe-Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 N achieves low overpotentials of 167 and 371 mV at current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, in 1 M alkaline seawater, with exceptional stability over 100 h at 100 and 500 mA cm −2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that these compressive strains optimize the adsorption of OER intermediates and improve catalytic kinetics. This work demonstrates the promise of dual-phase lattice strain engineering in TMNs for efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalysts in seawater electrolysis, a strategy that has yet to be fully explored for OER.

With the increasingly urgent safety requirement of lithium-ion batteries, more and more attention has been paid to Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO)-based solid electrolytes with high ion conductivity and excellent electrochemical performance. Unfortunately, owing to the serious “Li-loss” and the abnormal grain growth (AGG) during the long-time high-temperature sintering process, it is difficult to achieve the high-quality LLZO electrolyte with uniform and fine grains, high density and excellent electrochemical performance. In this work, Ga/Mo co-doped LLZO solid-state electrolytes have been prepared by traditional sintering (TS) and two-step sintering (TSS). And the sintering mechanism, phase stability, microstructure evolution, and electrochemical performance have been systematically investigated. A small amount of Ga/Mo doping not only promotes the formation of the cubic garnet LLZO phase, but also enhances the stability of cubic phase. High density of 92.3% and uniform microstructure without AGG have been achieved via a small amount of Ga doping and TSS. Li 6.3 Ga 0.1 La 3 Zr 1.8 Mo 0.2 O 12 electrolytes, prepared by TSS of 1200 °C/15 min-1100 °C/8 h, exhibits high ion conductivity of 2.59 × 10 –4 S·cm −1 and critical current density (CCD) value of 0.5 mA·cm −2 , low electric conductivities of 4.77 × 10 –9 S·cm −1 , which suggests it is a potential electrolyte to apply in all-solid-state batteries.

We present a synergistic strategy integrating octahedrally coordinated Mo species as electron buffer and asymmetric site coupling in spinel Co3O4 to achieve acidic oxygen evolution reaction (AOER) activity and durability. The introduced Mo species function as dynamic electron reservoirs, effectively activating and stabilizing tetrahedral Co sites while enabling synergistic electronic coupling between tetrahedral and octahedral sites. This dual-regulation mechanism successfully suppresses cobalt overoxidation and subsequent ion dissolution by maintaining optimal charge redistribution. Furthermore, the asymmetric electronic coupling induced by Mo adjacent to both tetrahedral and octahedral sites facilitates the direct coupling of *O–*O radicals, accelerating oxygen molecule formation. The optimized Mo–Co3O4 NNAs demonstrate remarkable performance metrics: a low overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm–2, exceptional stability over 200 h in 0.5 M H2SO4, and minimal degradation rate (0.09 mV h–1). These achievements position it among the most competitive acid-stable non-precious-metal-based AOER catalysts reported to date. This work establishes fundamental guidelines for designing robust nonprecious electrocatalysts in acidic media and proposes fresh perspectives for implementing oxide path mechanism (OPM) paradigms in advanced AOER.

Regulation of the types and content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is regarded as a challenging task. Herein, the features of sulfur-vacancy (Sv) and nitrogen-vacancy (Nv), and cobalt (Co)/molybdenum (Mo)-bimetallic constituents were simultaneously incorporated into a novel Co-N@MoS 2 -COOH catalyst through a simple hydrothermal calcination method. The adsorption of oxygen (O 2 ) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was promoted by Sv/Nv, whereby the generation of superoxide radical (O 2 · - ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) species was induced, and the energy barrier for the formation of high-valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV)=O) was reduced. The decomposition of PMS was enhanced by a bimetal (Mo/Co) electronic pump and the O 2 · - , 1 O 2 , and Co(IV)=O active species degraded tetracycline (TC) together to achieve an efficient degradation rate (initial K obs = 0.490 min -1 ). The degradation intermediates and potential degradation pathways were identified, and the leaching of Co was within the acceptable range of environmental standards. Incorporation of the catalyst into a microfilter membrane achieved a 100% degradation of TC at an ultra-high membrane flux (1803.4 LMH/bar). This study provided new insights into the types of ROS regulated by bi-vacancy and bimetallic catalysts in AOP systems, with the intention of promoting a more sustainable and resource-efficient treatment technology.

The global energy transition driving an urgent need for sustainable renewable energy technologies. Hydrogen’s role as a clean, high-efficiency energy vector stems from its ability to store large amounts of energy without generating carbon emissions, relies on water electrolysis technology for its efficient production. However, commercial noble metal catalysts (IrO 2 and RuO 2 ) have drawbacks such as high cost and poor stability, limiting their large-scale application. To address this, this study developed a hierarchical CoMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH heterostructure catalyst aimed at simultaneously optimizing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance to achieve efficient overall water splitting. A core–shell structure was constructed through a dual-stage synthesis procedure (hydrothermal growth of CoMoO 4 nanorod arrays followed by electrodeposition of CoFe-LDH nanosheets). In situ analysis revealed that Mo species dissolution during the OER process induces surface reconstruction, generating highly active Co(Fe)OOH species, significantly lowering the reaction energy barrier. Experimental results showed that the catalyst exhibited outstanding OER activity and HER activity. Additionally, the catalyst exhibits outstanding stability (OER continuous operation for 50 h without degradation) and achieves efficient Overall Water Splitting Performance (starting voltage 1.52 V at 10 mA/cm 2 ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm the optimized electronic structure at the heterointerface.

Here, we constructed S-scheme CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x (CISMO) photothermal catalyst with interface Mo-S bond for efficient overall water splitting. As expected, hydrogen (H 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) evolution rates of the optimized CISMO reached 554.71 and 277.88 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , respectively, far higher than that of CdIn 2 S 4 (71.78 and 34.45 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and MoO 3-x (0 and 21.83 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). Mechanism analysis revealed that the photogenerated carrier transfer followed an S-scheme route. More importantly, the photocatalytic performance of CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x was highly relevant with the oxygen vacancies (Ovs) in pristine MoO 3-x . In S-rich environment, the Ovs could be imbedded by sulfur (S) for the formation of interface Mo-S bond during CISMO fabrication. Interface Mo-S bridge facilitated the photogenerated carriers transfer between CdIn 2 S 4 and MoO 3-x . Moreover, the metal-free localized surface plasmon resonance effect, originating from the residual Ovs in CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x , could further enhance the water splitting performance through photothermal conversion. This work shed light on controllable interface chemical bond formation in heterojunction photocatalysts to signally promote the photocatalytic performance.
