The modification of graphite carbonitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is beneficial to increase its specific surface area and high quantum efficiency, thus improving its activity. Herein, the Yb 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 composites were adjusted through dual regulation synergistically (nanostructure design of g-C 3 N 4 and addition of lanthanide oxides Yb 2 O 3 ) to improve the photocatalytic performance of hydrogen production and NO removal simultaneously. The as-prepared 1% Yb 2 O 3 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 could efficiently promote the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (4071.763 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and NO removal performance (54.20%), which was approximately 8.85 times and 32.01% higher respectively than that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 prepared by melamine (g-C 3 N 4 -M). The formation process of·O 2 - and·OH radicals and the oxidation process of NO had been systematically studied through ESR and in-situ DRIFTS , which proved that the coupling of tubular g-C 3 N 4 with Yb 2 O 3 had a positive effect. This work provided a novel strategy for dual regulation (adjust morphology and metal oxide introduction) synergistically design of bifunctional photocatalysts to enhance H 2 production and NO removal simultaneously.

Graphical Single Ir atoms : In the CO+NO reaction, the catalyst with single-sited Ir atoms (0.28 wt %) anchored on a mesoporous WO 3 (Ir 1 /mesoporous-WO 3 ) showed much higher NO conversion and N 2 selectivity under oxygen-rich conditions than the catalysts supported with Ir nanoparticles on the same catalyst support (Ir NPs/mesoporous-WO 3 ) and on a non-mesoporous WO 3 (Ir/non-mesoporous-WO 3 ). Under oxygen-rich conditions, achieving a selective and efficient reduction of NO by CO is always challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of the catalyst consisting of single Ir atoms anchored on mesoporous WO 3 (denoted as Ir 1 /m-WO 3 ) using a facile template method followed by wet impregnation. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope studies indicated that the Ir atoms were distributed uniformly on the internal surface of m-WO 3 . When tested for the reduction of NO by CO, the Ir 1 /m-WO 3 catalyst with a low Ir loading of 0.28 wt % exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the presence of 2 vol % O 2 (volume ratio of CO to O 2 being 1 : 10), achieving a NO conversion of 73 % and N 2 selectivity of 100 % at 350 °C. In particular, its turnover frequency (TOF) value reached 0.30 s −1 at 200 °C, which is six times higher than that of the catalyst with Ir nanoparticles supported on mesoporous WO 3 (0.05 s −1 ). The superior catalytic performance of Ir 1 /m-WO 3 is attributed to the formation of the isolated Ir atoms and the more newly generated Ir-WO 3 interfaces that can promote the adsorption and activation of NO, and the presence of accessible mesopores in m-WO 3 that facilitates the mass transfer of NO and CO. This study brings a new fundamental understanding of active sites in Ir-based catalysts for the CO+NO reaction and provides a new way to the design and synthesis of single-atom catalysts, especially precious metal catalysts for emissions control.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is promising for clinical cancer therapy; however, the efficacy was limited as an individual treatment regimen. Here, an approach synergistically combining PDT and nitric oxide (NO) gas therapy along with destruction of the tumor extracellular matrix (ECM) was presented to eliminate cancer. Specifically, the NO donor l-arginine (l-Arg) and the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) were co-encapsulated in poly(lactic-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles and then loaded into the poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL–PEG–PCL) hydrogel to develop an injectable, thermosensitive dual drug delivery system (PLGA@ICG@l-Arg/Gel). Significantly, reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by PLGA@ICG@l-Arg/Gel under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation could not only result in the apoptosis of cancer cells but also oxidize l-Arg to generate NO, which could suppress the proliferation of cancer cells. Moreover, ROS could further oxidize NO to generate peroxynitrite anions (ONOO–). ONOO– could activate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which notably degraded collagen in ECM so as to damage the tumor microenvironment. PLGA@ICG@l-Arg/Gel significantly increased the antitumor efficacy against highly malignant 4T1 tumors in mice. Taken together, PLGA@ICG@l-Arg/Gel is a multifunctional platform that provides a novel strategy for cancer treatment with cascade amplification of the ROS oxidation effect, which holds great potential in clinical translation.

Photothermal effect was for the first time utilized to capture the energy from infrared light and to promote the photocatalytic oxidation activity of NO by a simply mechanical mixing of traditional photocatalysts and core-shell structured Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 . Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 absorbed the infrared light, transferred it into thermal energy based on photothermal effect, which then accelerated the NO photocatalytic activity of traditional photocatalysts. This promotion effect led by the addition of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was confirmed by several classical photocatalysts such as TiO 2 , g-C 3 N 4 , BiOI and CeO 2 . To quantitatively characterize the photothermal effect, thermo images were taken with a thermo imager to obtain the average temperature rise of samples under the illumination of simulated solar light. Specially, P25/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was studied in depth for illustration of the promotion mechanism. Experimental results showed that with the contribution of SiO 2 shell, the photocorrosion of Fe 3 O 4 didn’t occur during photocatalytic oxidation process and the photothermal effect of Fe 3 O 4 was maintained. The quantity of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was a vital factor for promotion of photocatalytic activity and the optimum mass ratio of P25 and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was 3–1. After 120 min of illumination, the temperature of optimum P25/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 rose to 57.4 °C from 25 °C and its NO conversion capability showed an enhancement of 38.9% with the comparison to pure P25. The experimental results confirmed that the rise of temperature was attributed to the photothermal effect and its contribution was the same as the directly heating of photocatalysts. Furthermore, the enhancement of NO conversion capability around 30–40% was observed for the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 mixed anatase TiO 2 , g-C 3 N 4 , ZnO, BiOI and CeO 2 . In sum, we developed a new strategy for utilization of NIR light of solar energy to facilitate the photocatalytic reactions.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) infections have been a major setback in wound healing, yet there is no effective therapeutic intervention. Here we report a nano-multidrug co-delivery system based on arginine-terminal butterfly-shaped peptide dendrimers (C&D@Z) that effectively kill bacteria and promote wound healing. Firstly, upon the near-infrared light irradiation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) was generated from the loaded photosensitizers, and then mediated bacteria killing. Next, the excessive ROS reacted with the designed butterfly-shaped dendrimers to generate sustained and abundant nitric oxide (NO), which exerted bactericidal action, as well as produced anti-inflammatory and angiogenesis effects. The co-delivery system, facilitated by the generation of NO, penetrated deeply into the biofilm, thereby effectively eliminating bacteria. The enhanced bactericidal and healing efficiency was investigated through biofilm penetration and wound healing experiments. Collectively, our system leveraged the highly-branched and cavity structures of the butterfly peptide dendrimer to realize the tight contact between the arginine groups and photosensitizer to achieve efficient conversion from ROS to NO, and the C&D@Z exhibited superior NO production, optimal photodynamic therapy utilization and effective penetration performance through cascade reaction between photodynamic therapy and NO therapy, may serve as a promising therapeutic approach for DFU infections.

Achieving remarkable activity in selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR) over CeO2-based catalysts was crucial for their industrial application but still faces a tough challenge, mainly owing to the insufficient acidity and overoxidation ability. Herein, the surface acidity and reducibility of CeO2 catalysts were finely tuned over Mn–W/CeO2 to efficiently eliminate NO and reveal the mechanistic origin of superior catalytic properties. Systematic surface and structure analyses revealed that Mn3O4 interacted with WO3 species in the possible form of Mn–O–W, which could enhance the dispersion of WO3 over the CeO2 surface. The resulting well-dispersed WO3 increased the concentration of both Brønsted acid sites and strong acid sites, effectively suppressing the generation of inactive nitrates and thus providing abundant catalytically active sites for the adsorption and activation of NH3. Importantly, the electron withdrawal from Mn by W atoms associated with the shortened Mn–O bond distance resulted in the appropriate reducibility over Mn–W/CeO2. Accordingly, the undesirable overoxidation of NH3 was weakened, thereby greatly increasing the high-temperature (250–400 °C) NH3-SCR activity. DFT calculations and detailed in situ DRIFTS analysis demonstrated that both “E–R” and “L–H” mechanisms contributed mainly to this superior performance.

Leaf tenderness influences green tea quality, yet its role in flavour formation remains unclear. This study analysed green teas from Camellia sinensis cv. ‘Chuancha No. 2’ with three tenderness levels—single bud (C1B), one-bud with one-leaf (C1B1L), and one-bud with two-leaves (C1B2L)—via sensory evaluation, chemical profiling, and GC–MS analysis. C1B showed the best appearance and a chestnut-like, refreshing aroma. C1B1L featured floral notes and a mellow, umami taste, while C1B2L was stronger and more full-bodied. C1B had higher free amino acids and lower polyphenols and caffeine; C1B1L had the highest polyphenol content. Among 97 volatiles, 11 had ROAV > 1. Five common aroma compounds, namely 1-octen-3-ol, geraniol, hexanal, benzeneacetaldehyde, and 2-pentylfuran, were identified as key contributors to the aroma profile. Geraniol, most abundant in C1B1L, shaped its floral aroma. These origins are supported by established pathways, including lipid-derived oxidation products, glycoside-released geraniol, and amino-acid-derived benzeneacetaldehyde. This study clarifies how tenderness drives flavour divergence and identifies compounds supporting sensory variation in green tea.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections remain a critical public health concern worldwide, with conventional antibacterial strategies presenting limitations such as inconsistent target localization, suboptimal therapeutic efficiency, and progressive antimicrobial resistance development. Nitric oxide (NO), a bioactive molecule, exhibits potent antibacterial effects, resulting in the emergence of NO-based gas therapy as a promising and innovative therapeutic strategy. However, these therapies present the principal challenge of effective NO delivery, owing to its short half-life and limited diffusion capacity. Hence, this study aimed to develop AI‑molybdenum disulfide (L-Arg/IR780@MoS 2 ) nanoflowers (NFs) employing L-arginine (L-Arg) as an endogenous NO precursor and MoS 2 as a dual carrier for L-Arg and IR780 iodide (IR780). Following near-infrared irradiation during photodynamic therapy, generated reactive oxygen species initiated an oxidation cascade for L-Arg-to-NO conversion. The produced NO, in combination with photothermal therapy, modulated the bacterial microenvironment. This significantly altered the expression of key genes in MDR bacteria associated with nucleotide metabolism and biofilm formation, thereby effectively disrupting biofilms and suppressing bacterial growth. Furthermore, the AI-MoS 2 NFs exhibited notable ancillary therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory activity, enhanced re-epithelialization, increased collagen deposition, and angiogenesis modulation, which collectively accelerated wound healing. Altogether, the findings of this study present a synergistic therapeutic strategy designed to address the dual challenges posed by bacterial biofilms and antimicrobial resistance.

The conventional flue gas treatment technologies require high capital investments and chemical costs, which limit their application in industrial sectors. This study developed a sulfur-cycling technology to integrate sulfide production by biological sulfur reduction and simultaneous catalytic desulfurization and denitrification with H2S (H2S-SCDD) for flue gas treatment and sulfur recovery. In a packed bed reactor, high-rate sulfide production (1.63 ± 0.16 kg S/m3-d) from biological sulfur reduction was achieved using organics in wastewater as electron donors at pH around 5.8. 93% of sulfide in wastewater was stripped out as H2Sg, which can be a low-cost reducing agent in the H2S-SCDD process. Over 90% of both SO2 and NO were removed by the H2S-SCDD process under the test conditions, resulting in the formation of sulfur. 88% of the input S (H2Sg and SO2) were recovered as octasulfur with high purity. Besides partial recycling to produce biogenic sulfide, excessive sulfur can be obtained as a sellable product. The integrated sulfur-cycling technology is a chemical-saving and even profitable solution to the flue gas treatment in industrial sectors with wastewater available.

Photocatalytic oxidation offers a viable method for removing low-concentration NO from the atmosphere. However, poor oxygen adsorption-activation capacity and high re-combination rate of electrons and holes limit the photocatalytic NO oxidation activity. To over-come these problems, Ni(OH) 2 clusters decorated NiTiO 3 Z-scheme heterojunctions are constructed by a precipitation method. The tight interfacial contacts and built-in electric field between the (0 0 2) crystal facet of Ni(OH) 2 and (0 1 2) crystal facet of NiTiO 3 promote a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This Z-scheme mechanism will enhance the charge-transfer driving force and result in high separation efficiency of the charges, thus leading to an enhanced photocatalytic performance. Importantly, introducing Ni(OH) 2 is considered a promising strategy to enhance the adsorption ability of the O 2 , NO and NO 2 . This might help to increase O 2 activation efficiency and speed up NO deep oxidation, leading to high NO removal efficiency and low NO 2 selectivity. Benefiting from the above excellent properties, the photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency of Ni(OH) 2 /NiTiO 3 composites is enhanced and the formation of more toxic NO 2 is inhibited compared with that of NiTiO 3 . This work offers a promising and effective route to design efficient NiTiO 3 -based photocatalysts in the application of environmental remediation.

In this study, a highly efficient bifunctional porphyrin-based MOFs with uniformly in-situ generated g-C 3 N 4 quantum dots (g-CNQDs) was fabricated for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and NO removal, in which PtTCPP as the organic ligand and mixed Zr/Ti-oxo clusters as the metal nodes. Compared with most reported Zr-based porphyrin MOFs, the g-CNQDs@Zr-MOFs(Pt)(Zr/Ti) exhibited outstanding hydrogen evolution activity (14511.57 μmol g −1 ) and NO removal rate (31.9 %) under visible light irradiation. The obviously improved photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the significantly enhanced charge separation and transfer rates by the mixed Zr/Ti-oxo clusters via the rapid Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ process. Moreover, the uniformly in-situ generated g-CNQDs via confinement effect in the cavity of MOFs could also improve the utilization of visible light especially through the up-conversion effect, and promote charge carriers separation. This work provides an idea for us to expand the scope of light utilization and promote charge transfer and separation rates of MOFs via functionalizing host MOFs matrix and coupling guest active species to improve photocatalytic performance further.

Introduction The purpose of the experiment was to survey the therapeutic function of resveratrol (RES)-loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(phenylalanine) (PEG-PPhe) on intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury (II/RI) via the interaction between CSE/H 2 S and iNOS/NO compared to free RES in diabetic rats. Methods Diabetic rats were pretreated with 20 mg/kg of RES or the RES/PEG-PPhe complex and then subjected to 1 h of ischemia and 3 h of reperfusion. Blood and intestines were collected, intestinal pathological injury was estimated, and the contents of body weight, weights of different tissues, blood glucose, serum insulin, HOMA index, serum nitric oxide (NO) and serum sulfureted hydrogen (H 2 S) were observed. The dry/wet intestine ratios, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD); the contents of methane dicarboxylic aldehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), H 2 S, and NO; and the concentrations of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) were observed in the intestinal tissues. Results A significant reduction of weights of different tissues, blood glucose, pathological damage, dry/wet ratios, MDA, NO, iNOS expression and a significant increasement of body weight, serum insulin, HOMA index, SOD, GSH, H 2 S, CSE expression were observed in both treatment groups. However, a greater reduction of weights of different tissues, blood glucose (7.49–13.49 mmol/L for 72 h vs. the control) and pathological damage, iNOS expression, dry/wet ratios (6.14 ± 0.29 vs. 8.51 ± 0.42), MDA (5.01 ± 0.71 nmol vs. 9.98 ± 0.67 nmol), NO (0.52 ± 0.09 μmol vs. 0.99 ± 0.08 μmol in intestinal tissue; 19.29 ± 0.89 μmol vs. 45.23 ± 1.17 μmol in serum) was observed in the RES/PEG-PPhe group relative to the I/R ( P < 0.01 for all); a greater increasement of body weight, serum insulin, HOMA index, SOD (39.79±1.78 U vs. 11.84 ± 1.02 U), GSH (31.25 ± 1.19 mg vs. 10.13 ± 0.64 mg), H 2 S (39.52 ± 1.32 nmol vs. 13.02 ± 1.03 nmol in intestinal tissue; 9.78 ± 0.79 μmol vs. 3.11 ± 0.85 μmol in serum), CSE expression was observed in the RES/PEG-PPhe group relative to the I/R ( P < 0.01 for all). In addition, aminoguanidine (AMI, iNOS inhibitor) reduced I/R injury, and dl -propargylglycine (PAG, CSE inhibitor) increased I/R injury. Conclusions The interaction between CSE/H2S and the iNOS/NO-mediated resveratrol/poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(phenylalanine) complex alleviates intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injuries in diabetic rats.
