Manipulation of PMMA/PVDF-based nanocomposites by heat treatment resulted in significantly enhanced energy density

Lu Ye,Jun Wei,Bixuan Zhu,Chuanyezi Cai,Ruiqi He,Gengqi Tong,Jiacheng Guo,Xi Chen,Yu He,Xinrui Yan,Erhao Cheng,Jianjun Zhang,Sude Ma

PVDF is one of the most researched polymers for the development of high energy density film capacitors, and its crystalline structure and dipole motion are closely related to the energy density. In this work, the low-loss amorphous polymer PMMA was introduced as a reinforcing phase to blend with PVDF to form a matrix. PMMA/PVDF-BT nanocomposites were prepared by spin-coating method and subjected to quenching heat treatment in three media, namely, deionized water, ice water, and liquid nitrogen, respectively. The results showed that the quenching heat treatment achieved a synergistic increase in permittivity and breakdown strength without sacrificing the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, while maintaining a low dielectric loss. The discharge energy density of the quenched heat-treated PMMA/PVDF-BT nanocomposite in ice water at 180 °C was 11.5 J/cm 3 (3100 kV/cm), which was about 958.33 % of the best commercial BOPP film (1.2 J/cm 3 ). This work has great potential as flexible dielectric substrates for advanced and sophisticated film capacitors.

Plasma etching assisted fabrication of PDA/PEI modified PVDF membranes for oil/water emulsion separation

Zhao Chen,Yang Gang,Luo Qianxue

The PDA/PEI modification technology is commonly employed to improve the resistance to membrane fouling of polymeric membranes used in the treatment of oily wastewater. Nevertheless, the surface characteristics of membrane materials frequently restrict the implementation of the modification technique in terms of both the amount and speed of deposition. The hydrophobic membranes, such as PVDF and PTFE, have a surface with very low surface free energy and only inert functional groups. This surface is not suitable for the deposition of PDA/PEI. This study utilized plasma etching treatment to break the C–H and C–F bonds on the surface of the PVDF membrane, resulting in the introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups. During the deposition process, the PDA/PEI exhibited a tendency to chemically connect to material surfaces that included oxygen-containing functional groups, such as –OH, by processes such as hydrogen bonding. During the modification procedure, the etched membrane experienced an increase in the mass of PDA/PEI deposition and the strength of interfacial bonding. As a result, the modified membrane acquired improved hydrophilicity and anti-fouling performance. In summary, this study offers useful insights for improving the surface properties of hydrophobic polymeric membranes to prevent membrane fouling.

Ultra-low-Dosage Lignin-Derived PHU-Enhanced PVDF Binders for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Miaoyou Li,Bailiang Xue,Xiaojie Xie,Mengqi Song,Wenliang Wang,Haiwei Wu,Wei Zhao,Weijing Chen

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have emerged as a pivotal next-generation energy storage technology due to their exceptional theoretical energy density. Their development faces fundamental challenges from conventional poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binders, including high crystallinity, insufficient adhesion, and poor interfacial compatibility with electrode active materials. In this work, we developed a convenient one-pot strategy to enhance the performance of the traditional PVDF binder by using lignin-derived polyhydroxyurethane (PHU). The ultra-low-dosage (1 wt %) lignin-derived PHU-modified PVDF binder (LP1) effectively enhanced the flexible amorphous domains and interfacial adhesion, leading to significantly improved Li+ transport and cyclic stability. The electrode with LP1 binder exhibited a substantially higher Li+ diffusion coefficient of 3.47 × 10–14 cm2 s–1 than that of the PVDF binder (2.05 × 10–15 cm2 s–1). The LP1-based battery demonstrated a capacity retention of 93.8% after 400 cycles at 1C compared to the 82.5% of the PVDF-based battery. This work not only establishes a foundation for the application of lignin-derived binders but also provides important guidance for binder design toward next-generation binder systems in advanced LMBs.

Mechanism of piezoelectric field-enhanced electron transfer during peroxymonosulfate activation with MoS2/PVDF-HFP films

Tingting Cao,Liping Lin,Yanan Li,Wangshu Tong

Piezoelectric molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has emerged as a promising candidate for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), yet the mechanistic role of its piezoelectric field, particularly regarding the electron transfer process, is not fully understood. Herein, we construct a MoS 2 /PVDF-HFP (MP) piezoelectric composite film stimulated by ultrasound to elucidate the piezoelectric field's enhancement effect on PMS activation for singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation. Notably, the ultrasound-induced piezoelectric field enhanced 1 O 2 production by 26-fold compared to the non-piezoelectric system, leading to significantly improved degradation efficiency (≈94 % within 60 min) of methylene blue (MB). Through a combination of experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the piezoelectric field enhances the adsorption of PMS onto the MoS 2 surface (evidenced by a change in adsorption energy from –0.33 eV to –0.42 eV) and facilitates interfacial electron transfer (with an increase of 0.04 e⁻ transferred per PMS molecule), thereby promoting the conversion of PMS to 1 O 2 . This work elucidates the enhancement mechanism of the electron transfer process in the MoS 2 -PMS system and provides a film-based strategy for designing efficient, ultrasound-driven piezoelectric AOPs targeting selective 1 O 2 generation.

Preparation of PVDF/PVP blend polymer nanofiber films and application on screen-printed flexible electrodes

Zhilei Li,Jianping Zhou,Yan Xu,Changhua Chen,Tongtong Ran,Shuaishuai Wang

The preparation of three electrodes (working electrode, counter electrode, reference electrode) on soft, deformable, and breathable film substrates with good adhesion is a novel approach for the development of wearable devices for plants. In this study, the adsorption energy of carbon paste, graphite, and a polymer was calculated via molecular dynamics simulations, and the optimal polymer ratio was selected for the preparation of nanofiber films. Electrospinning technology was used to prepare a breathable ultrathin polymer film, which was used as a flexible substrate for three electrodes, and a conductive carbon paste was patterned on the nanofiber film substrate by screen printing. The properties of the composite nanofiber membrane substrate and flexible screen-printing electrode were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), 3D profile scanning, and electrochemical experiments. The combination of electrospinning technology and screen-printing technology is a new path for the preparation of nondestructive and wearable detection devices.

Bi-functional Cu-MOF/PVDF hybrid membranes: Selective acid fuchsin adsorption and laccase mimics catalysis

Caiqin Su,Defeng Hu,Hongtian Yang,Yide Han,Yufeng Liu,Ying Zhang,Xia Zhang

In this study, bi-functions of surface adsorption and laccase like catalysis were integrated by the hybrid membranes of Cu-MOF (Cu-2MI) uniformly incorporated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for the first time, which endow an unexpected utility in surface physical adsorption and chemical catalytic engineering. In which, the loading of Cu-2MI was varied to optimize the surface performance of the membranes. The adsorption conditions were optimized based on batch adsorption experiments, and the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were discussed by using theoretical models to elucidate the adsorption mechanism. In addition, the laccase-mimicking catalytic performance of these Cu-2MI/PVDF hybrid membranes was explored based on the colorimetric reaction of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP). The laccase-like catalytic kinetics, including K m and V max , were determined, and their catalytic stability under varying pH, temperature, organic solvents, and storage time was systematically tested and compared to that of free laccase. The maximum adsorption capacity of the obtained Cu-2MI/PVDF hybrid membrane for acid fuchsin (AF) is 4789.5 μg cm −2 . Moreover, the hybrid membrane exhibits a good linear relationship in the range of 5.0–750 μM in adrenaline detection, with a detection limit of 3.60 μM. This work highlights the exceptional surface activity and stability of the Cu-MOF/PVDF hybrid membranes, which ensure promising applicability in surface physical and chemical engineering.

Flame-Retardant Gel Electrolytes Reinforced by PVDF-HFP/Ceramic Nanofiber Mat for Lithium Metal Batteries

Jingying Guo,Zhenyi Zhang,Xiaoli Lu,Yi Zhang,Jianchuan Wang,Zidong Wei

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have become a viable substitute for liquid electrolytes (LEs) in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) for their excellent ionic conductivity and enhanced interfacial compatibility. However, as semisolid electrolytes, GPEs face significant challenges, including low mechanical strength and flammability. Herein, we fabricate a porous poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) mat (PHL) enriched with oxide ceramics as a support matrix, and fluorine-rich compounds are incorporated by in situ polymerization to construct a flame-retardant cross-linked GPE network with improved interfacial compatibility. The PHL-based GPE (PHL-GPE) exhibits ultralong cycling stability of over 2000 h with lithium metal. When applying Li|PHL-GPE|LiFePO4 (LFP) cells, the PHL-GPE enables stable cycling for over 500 cycles with a capacity retention of 92.3% under high current density (1C) and high active material mass loading (11.25 mg cm–2). This study provides an approach to address key challenges in the commercialization of LMBs.

Facile Fabrication of a Continuous PVDF/ZIF-8-Lignosulfonate Membrane for Efficient Organic Pollutants Adsorption

Juan Dai,Qixu Chen,Yue Li,Jin Wang,Yanchao Yin,Peiyu Zhao,Peichuang Li,Luying Wang

Graphical A defect-free PVDF/ZIF-8-LS membrane prepared by loading a continuous ZIF-8-LS film layer on the PVDF membrane exhibited high and stable adsorption performance for CR and TC removal, because of a good compatibility between PVDF membrane and ZIF-8-LS layer. Lignosulfonate (LS) enhances ZIF-8 dispersion and active sites but faces challenges in recovery and secondary pollution due to its powdered form. To address this, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/ZIF-8-LS composite membrane was fabricated via vapor deposition, where LS promoted dense ZIF-8 growth and interfacial compatibility with PVDF. The resulting PVDF/ZIF-8-LS membrane shows a higher continuous, uniform and dense ZIF-8-LS layer without macroscopic cracks or obvious defects. In addition, the PVDF/ZIF-8-LS exhibits the best adsorption capacity of 110.6 mg g −1 for Congo Red, about 8.8 mg g −1 higher than the PVDF/ZIF-8, and 110.2 mg g −1 for tetracycline, respectively. With 92% capacity retention after three cycles and stability across pH 2–10. The more active adsorption sites facilitates the contact between the ZIF-8-LS layer and the adsorbed substance, in addition to the electrostatic, H-bonding, π-π interactions, and coordination bond are also conductive to the adsorption of PVDF/ZIF-8-LS. The excellent adsorption performance and good recyclability of the PVDF/ZIF-8-LS composite membranes exhibit a potential for adsorbing other contaminants from water.

Enhanced carbon dioxide capture via amphiphobic PVDF membrane modification for membrane contactors: Overcoming wettability challenges

Chang Li,Yanbin Yun,Fengguang Huang,Jiaming Mao,Jia Liu,Wenjuan Yang,Chunyun Zhou,Meng Li

The membrane contact absorption method is a promising technology for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture, enhancing absorption efficiency and mitigating aerosol emissions. However, membrane wetting, an inevitable issue during the membrane contact absorption process, leads to a rapid decline in absorption rates, thereby limiting the development of this methodology. Focusing on the tendency of organic absorbents to induce membrane wetting, this study reports a novel modification method for amphiphobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. This method leverages polydopamine nanoparticles (PDANPs) to construct stable multi-level reentrant structures on the membrane surface, which are further enhanced for their hydrophobic properties through surface fluorination. The resultant amphiphobic membrane exhibits exceptional resistance to both water and organic wetting, with a water contact angle as high as 152.82° and contact angles above 90° for various organic absorbents. Long-term experiments demonstrate that the membrane material prepared by this method facilitates the stable and long-running operation of membrane contactors. Based on these findings, we analyze the structure–property relationship between the membrane surface microstructure and its amphiphobic performance. In conclusion, the fluorinated polydopamine hierarchical structure effectively resists membrane wetting induced by CO 2 absorbents, contributing to the promotion and application of CO 2 membrane absorption technology

Flexible PVDF membranes with exceptional robust superwetting surface for continuous separation of oil/water emulsions

Xiong Zhu,Lin Haibo,Liu Fu,Xiao Peng,Wu Ziyang,Li Tiantian,Li Dehong

Instability of superwetting surface is the stumbling block of flexible polymeric membranes for continuous separation of water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions. Manipulation of rigid superwetting nano-TiO 2 on hierarchical poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane by mimicking the plant roots holding soil behaviour enabled the generation of robust superwetting surface withstanding the harshly physical and chemical torture. The unique interface combination, which fabricated by a compacted nano-layer with the thickness of ~20 μm, was disclosed by systematic structure characterization. As demonstrated by SEM, LSCM and nano-CT, the pristine PVDF membrane with large quantities of cilia-like micro/nano-fibrils can function as the plant roots to capture, cage and confine the nanoparticles to form a robustly rigid nano-coating. The as-prepared membranes showed excellent durable separation performance both in varieties of stabilized water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsion separation for a long term with few nanoparticles loss in a continuous crossflow mode. The strategy of assembling rigid inorganic nano-particles on flexible surface offers a window of opportunity for preparation of robust organic-inorganic hybrid membranes not only for continuous oil/water emulsion separation, but also for other functional application, such as electric conduction, heat conduction, ion exchange, and in membrane catalytic reactors etc.

Flexible temperature sensors based on optimized paper/Cu/Al2O3 and graphene/PVDF composite sensing layers

Pengfei Zhao,Jijun Ding,Haixia Chen,Haiwei Fu

Wearable devices have great potential for development in the fields of human health detection and human-computer interaction due to its flexibility and portability. In this work, Firstly, the resistance response performance of paper/Cu/Al 2 O 3 to temperature is optimized by changing the sputtering time of Al 2 O 3 . Combining the resistance change and stability after one month, paper/Cu/Al 2 O 3 films with 1 min Al 2 O 3 layer is selected. Then, temperature sensor based on optimized paper/Cu/Al 2 O 3 and graphene/PVDF composite temperature-sensitive layers is fabricated. The sensor shows negative temperature coefficient, high temperature response and stability, which provides significant advantages in the field of temperature monitoring. The fastest response/recovery time of the sensor is 1.4 s and 10.48 s respectively, which is fast and reliable in capturing the temperature changes and thus has the capability of real-time temperature monitoring. Another outstanding feature of the sensor is its high linearity to temperature fluctuations (R 2 =0.947). This feature suggests that the sensor enables real-time resistance-temperature interaction. In addition, its practical applications will be explored. The sensor can quickly sense the temperature of fingers, hot water, and working mobile phones. At the same time, the excellent performance of the sensor enables it to achieve the function of illuminating the LED. It lays the foundation for the application of temperature sensors in flexible wearable device applications.

Facile fabrication of flexible PDDA@PANI/PVDF humidity sensor and applications for non-contact monitoring

Jintian Qian,Mingxia Feng,Dawu Lv,Ruiqin Tan,Wenfeng Shen,Weijie Song

Flexible humidity sensors play a crucial role in the real-time monitoring of human physiological activities by being integrated with smart terminals, compact medical devices and flexible electronic skins. In this work, a facile fabrication method of a flexible humidity sensor based on a composite material of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyaniline (PANI) using in-situ polymerization and dip-coating techniques was proposed on a microporous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) filter membrane substrate. The resulting PDDA@PANI/PVDF-3.50 % sensor demonstrates remarkable sensitivity with a response of up to 5249 % across a humidity range of 11–97 % relative humidity (RH), minimal hysteresis (∼1.2 %), rapid response and recovery times (11 s and 28 s), stable performance under mechanical deformation, and excellent long-term durability. Additionally, the sensor can readily identify three breathing states and detect finger movements as short as 1 mm. The excellent performance is attributed to the hydrophilic modification and synergistic effect of PDDA on PANI chain, and the rich microporous structure of PVDF membrane. This work offers a novel strategy for developing advanced flexible sensors with significant potential in wearable electronic devices for healthcare and human-computer interaction.
