Nanocomposite Al–Sn-based bearing alloys produced by mechanical alloying (MA) exhibit high hardness; however, their poor sintering density and ductility limit their wide spread application. Here, we present a strategy to produce a dual-scale structure in an Al–Sn–Si alloy consisting of coarse and ultrafine grains through a combination of conventional powder sintering and thermomechanical treatment . We found that severe deformation and the presence of an Al–Si eutectic mixture for sample induced abnormal grain growth of Al to create the dual-scale Al–Sn–Si alloy through annealing treatment. An optimum matching of ductility and strength , and optimum wear performance were achieved at annealing temperatures of 500 and 550 °C. Detailed investigation of the wear mechanism revealed that the combination of high strength and high ductility provided by the dual-scale structure is a key factor for the improvement of the wear properties.

Bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework materials (Zn/Co-ZIFs) represent a notable class within the field of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). These materials are characterized by their advantageous properties typical of MOFs, including a high specific surface area and tunable pore sizes, in addition to exhibiting the structural stability that is characteristic of zeolites. In contrast, although tin-based materials demonstrate a high theoretical specific capacity, they experience significant volume changes during the charge and discharge cycles of batteries, leading to materal degradation and reduced cycling stability. In this study, Sn doping was successfully achieved in Zn/Co-NPC (N-doped porous carbon) by thermally treating Zn/Co-ZIFs at 700℃ through an impregnation method. This doping enhanced the sodium storage capacity of Zn/Co-NPC and improved its electrochemical performance. Experimental data indicate that the Sn/Zn/Co-NPC composite has a specific surface area of 332.80 m 2 g −1 and an average pore diameter of 7.30 nm. When this composite is used as the anode material in sodium-ion batteries, it demonstrates outstanding performance: after 100 cycles, its reversible specific capacity reaches 344.20 mAh g −1 (at a current density of 100 mA g −1 ) and exhibits excellent rate capability. Consequently, this study provides substantial insight into the prospective advancement of structurally stable and high-capacity anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Novel nitrogen–doped carbon (NC) coating encapsulating block-like Sn/SnO 2 (Sn/SnO 2 @NC) composite powders are successfully synthesized via hydrothermal, sol–gel, and subsequent heat treatment processes, which are characterized by XRD, SEM, thermogravimetric, Raman, and XPS. The results indicate that the Sn/SnO 2 @NC-2 composite powders are uniformly distributed in the NC matrix in the presence of 7.000 g of acrylamide. Moreover, the Sn/SnO 2 @NC-2 composite powders deliver high initial discharge specific capacity of 1132 mAh g −1 and decent capacity of 471.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 when the composite powders are evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The improved electrochemical performance of Sn/SnO 2 @NC-2 is mainly ascribed to the NC coating that can relieve the volume expansion and provide multiple charge transfer channels for electrons to consolidate the structural stability and promote the electronic conductivity of the Sn/SnO 2 anode materials, respectively. Therefore, the Sn/SnO 2 @NC-2 composite powders can be a promising and attractive anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

The attractive photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for hydrogen fuels always requires new semiconductors, which provide stronger visible light absorption with suitable band positions. Sn(II) complex oxides are expected to offer such new possibilities. In this work, a quaternary (Sn–Ta–W–O) Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze type Sn(II) oxide (Sn-TTB) and its photoanodes are reported for the first time. Results indicate that Sn-TTB has a bandgap of 1.85 eV with intense absorption up to 600 nm and the flat-band potential at −0.10 V vs. RHE. The IPCE of its photoanode is 10 times higher than that of the pyrochlore polymorph, owing to its better light absorption and higher carrier density. Experiments and calculations suggest strong interaction between Sn(II) ions and the W/TaO6 skeleton, facilitating the delocalization of charge carriers. Such an exploration indicates that the structural engineering of Sn(II) oxide may provide more exciting opportunities for solar energy conversion materials.

Summary Doping is an important technique for semiconductor materials, yet effective and controllable doping of organic-inorganic halide perovskites is still a challenge. Here, we present a protocol to dope 2D perovskite (PEA) 2 SnI 4 by incorporating SnI 4 in the precursor solutions. We detail steps for preparation of field-effect transistors (FETs) and thermoelectric devices (TEs) based on SnI 4 -doped (PEA) 2 SnI 4 films. We further describe characterization via conductivity measurement using the four-point probe method, FETs performance, and TEs performance measurements. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Liu et al. (2022). 1

Zinc–air batteries are considered one of the most promising batteries for energy storage owing to their low cost, high safety, and high energy density. Developing effective bifunctional electrocatalysts is one of the important issues for zinc–air batteries. Although Fe2N demonstrates oxygen reduction activity comparable to that of Pt-based catalysts, its relatively poor catalytic activity for oxygen evolution and limited exposure of active sites still restrict its application. Herein, we report on the rational design and synthesis of FeS2 and Fe2N nanostructures on sulfur- and nitrogen-codoped carbon nanotubes as effective and ultrastable bifunctional electrocatalysts. The highly dispersed FeS2 and Fe2N nanostructures on CNTs provide numerous active catalytic sites, and the introduction of FeS2 improves the electronic structure and charge distribution of the electrocatalysts, significantly reducing the Gibbs free energy for rate-determining steps in the oxygen evolution reaction. The carbon nanotubes here can also accelerate the transportation of electrons and oxygen molecules, as well as enhance the stability of the electrocatalysts. Consequently, it achieved impressive oxygen reduction activity with a half-wave potential of 0.765 V vs RHE and a low overpotential of 0.46 V for the oxygen evolution reaction at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, respectively. Moreover, the homemade zinc–air battery based on the FeS2–Fe2N/SN-CNTs air-cathode can deliver a maximum power density of 119.2 mW cm–2. This study introduces a novel approach to the design of dual-function catalysts and zinc–air batteries.

In the catalytic transformation of biomass into valuable chemicals, it is extremely important to inhibit undesirable reactions to increase the yield of target products. In this study, the introduction of indium and tin into Beta zeolites promoted the transformation of glucose into lactic acid with a high yield of 53%. Selective experiments and a developed kinetic model confirmed the sensitivity of the main reaction rate to the action of tin, including those of the isomerization and retro-aldol condensation reactions, and shielding of the side reactions by indium. An in-depth analysis of the catalyst acidity showed that weak Lewis acidity in the indium and tin species promoted the main reaction steps, whereas the decreased amount of strong Lewis acidity by introduction of indium into the Sn-Beta catalyst suppressed the side reactions. The coupling of multifunctional active sites provides a new strategy for addressing challenges in commercial lactic acid production.

Mn-doped 2D perovskite powders are promising phosphors for warm white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, it remains a challenge to solve the problem of lead toxicity and improve the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Here, we have successfully prepared Mn-doped 2D Sn-based perovskite materials ((C8H17NH2)2Sn1−xMnxBr4). The PLQYs of (C8H17NH2)2Sn1−xMnxBr4 (x = 0.26) powders reach up to 42%. The as-prepared (C8H17NH2)2Sn1−xMnxBr4 exhibits a single broad photoluminescence (PL) band, differing from the dual peaks of Mn-doped lead halide perovskite quantum dots. Theoretical conclusions and experimental results show the competitive relationship between self-trapped exciton (STE) emission from the host crystal and dopant Mn d–d transition emission. With increasing Mn dopant concentration, the PL spectra exhibit red shifts and the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) becomes larger, which is constructive for warm white LEDs. The fabricated warm white LEDs based on (C8H17NH2)2Sn1−xMnxBr4 show a warm white light correlated color temperature (CCT; 3542 K) and a high color-rendering index (Ra, 88.12). Our work provides new possibilities for optoelectronic devices based on lead-free perovskite materials.

Lithium metal, with its exceptionally high theoretical capacity, emerges as the optimal anode choice for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. Nevertheless, the practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is constrained by issues such as lithium dendrite growth and low Coulombic efficiency (CE). Herein, a roll-to-roll approach is adopted to prepare meter-scale, lithiophilic Sn-modified Cu mesh (Sn@Cu mesh) as the current collector for long-cycle lithium metal batteries. The two-dimensional (2D) nucleation mechanism on Sn@Cu mesh electrodes promotes a uniform Li flux, facilitating the deposition of Li metal in a large granular morphology. Simultaneously, experimental and computational analyses revealed that the distribution of the electric field in the Cu mesh skeleton induces Li inward growth, thereby generating a uniform, dense composite Li anode. Moreover, the Sn@Cu mesh-Li symmetrical cell demonstrates stable cycling for over 2000 h with an ultra-low 10 mV voltage polarization. In Li||Cu half-cells, the Sn@Cu mesh electrode demonstrates stable cycling for 100 cycles at a high areal capacity of 5 mAh·cm −2 , achieving a CE of 99.2%. This study introduces a simple and large-scale approach for the production of lithiophilic three-dimensional (3D) current collectors, providing more possibilities for the scalable application of Li metal batteries. Micrometer silicon (MSi) particles are prospective anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. Aiming at the scale-up production and the improvement in rate capability, a novel sub-micro Si/Sn@SiO x -C (SSSC) composite via a facile two-step process of milling and annealing is designed and synthesized. With the structural uniqueness including in-situ introduction of metallic tin (Sn) originated from mechano-reduction of nano tin dioxide (nano-SnO 2 ) with MSi, dual-buffering of inner SiO x matrix and uniform surface carbon layer , SSSC electrodes exhibit impressive rate capability and stable cyclability. The optimum architecture of SSSC-73 ( i.e. weight ratio of precursor MSi-to-SnO 2 is 7:3) delivers stable cycling with 1102 mAh g − 1 (at 0.5 A g − 1 ) over 100 cycles and exceptional rate performance with a high capacity retention of 95% over 500 cycles at 2 A g − 1 . Particularly, this facile and cost-effective preparation of SSSC composites has no by-products, making it competitive in practical application.

Sn-based materials have been popularly researched as anodes for energy storage due to their high theoretical capacity. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics and unsatisfied cycling stability caused by poor conductivity and dramatic volume expansion are still pivotal barriers for the development of Sn-based materials as anodes. In this work, the binary-metal Mn2SnO4 nanoparticles and Sn encapsulated in N-doped carbon (Sn@Mn2SnO4-NC) were fabricated by multistep reactions and employed as the anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The coexistence of binary metals (Sn and Mn) can improve intrinsic conductivity. Simultaneously, hollow architecture along with carbon relieves internal stress and prevents structural collapse. A Sn@Mn2SnO4-NC anode delivers an appealing capacity of 1039.5 mAh g–1 for 100 cycles at 100 mA g–1 and 823.8 mAh g–1 for 600 cycles at 1000 mA g–1 in LIBs. When evaluated as an anode in SIBs, the Sn@Mn2SnO4-NC anode tolerates up to 7000 cycles at 2000 mA g–1 and maintains a capacity of 185.8 mAh g–1. Quantified kinetic investigations demonstrate the high contribution of pseudocapacitive effects during the cycle process. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verify that introduction of the second metal (Mn) improves the conductivity of the material, which is favorable for charge transport. This work is expected to provide a feasible preparation strategy for binary-metal materials to enhance the performance of lithium- and sodium-ion batteries.

One-step solution fabrication of high-performance Sn-including perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is very challenging due to the rapid crystallization of the Sn-based perovskite layer, leading to a poor film morphology and low surface coverage. In this work, a well-controlled one-step method, assisted by a multi-step solvent treatment, is developed for the growth of a high-quality CH3NH3Pb(1−x)SnxI3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) perovskite film on a planar PEDOT:PSS substrate. The CH3NH3Sn0.25Pb0.75I3 perovskite films consisting of densely packed and uniformly distributed large crystal grains were obtained using sec-butyl alcohol solvent engineering and N,N-dimethylformamide solvent annealing under an N2 atmosphere. The CH3NH3Sn0.25Pb0.75I3-based PSCs with a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.08% and an average PCE of 11.01% were obtained. The PSCs also exhibit excellent performance reproducibility, good air stability and weak hysteresis behavior. The enhancement in the performance of the PSCs is attributed to the well-crystallized CH3NH3Sn0.25Pb0.75I3 film, resulting in simultaneous improvement in charge–carrier transport properties and reduction in charge–carrier recombination, a very promising approach to obtain high performance Sn-including perovskite solar cells.
