UV-metal ion synergistic activation of ferrate(VI) for the degradation of dimethoate

Chao Kong,Caiyun Zhang,Rongfang Yuan,Tianci He,Huilun Chen,Beihai Zhou

The improvement in the degradation efficiency of dimethoate was achieved through the activation of UV light and metal ions . The study found that Fe(VI) was effectively activated by Cu(II), Fe(III), and Fe(II), resulting in an improved removal rate of dimethoate in water, with the activation efficiency of Cu(II) > Fe(III) > Fe(II). Under UV irradiation , the synergistic activation effects of UV-Cu(II) and UV-Fe(III) were most pronounced and positively correlated with light intensity. The mineralization rate of dimethoate by UV-Fe(III)-Fe(VI) reached up to 37 %, significantly outperforming the Cu(II)-Fe(VI) system. The main active species in the Cu(II)-Fe(VI) and Fe(III)-Fe(VI) systems were Cu(III) and Fe(IV)/Fe(V), while those in the UV-Fe(III)-Fe(VI) were ·OH and ·O 2 - radicals, respectively. In the UV-metal ions activated Fe (VI) system, the main degradation mechanisms of dimethoate were hydrolysis, cleavage, oxidation , and recombination. The impacts of water quality parameters on degradation efficiency were also investigated, finding that Cl - had almost no effect , while SO 4 2- had a slight repression effect, and HCO 3 - , CO 3 2- and NO 2 - exhibited strong inhibitory effects. Finally, the promising application of the UV-metal ion-Fe(VI) system in actual water environments was proposed, achieving effective removal with minimal environmental risks.

Minghao Zhou,Shijiao Zhang,Yanlai Wang

By employing semiconductor composite strategies and morphology control, Zn-doped CuInS 2 quantum dots with a ZnS shell structure (ZCIS@ZnS QDs) have been synthesized and combined with TiO 2 nanowires or nanoparticles (NWs/NPs) for photodetector applications. In the composite material, the QDs are uniformly attached to the surface of TiO 2 NWs/NPs. The photodetector constructed with ZCIS@ZnS QDs and TiO 2 NWs/NPs (ZCIS@ZnS@TiO 2 NWs/NPs) demonstrated superior photodetection performance. It exhibited excellent responsivity (∼6.2 mA/W) and detectivity (∼1.6 × 10 12 Jones) under ultraviolet (UV) illumination (∼365 nm). This non-toxic and environmentally friendly composite material provides a promising alternative for applications in various fields.

Ultrastable InP@Al2O3 nanocomposites with UV curable function for application in white LEDs

Xiaobo Ding,Hailong Hu,Tailiang Guo,Fushan Li

InP quantum dots have received intensive attention due to their tunable emission wavelengths, narrow bandwidths, and high color purity. Nevertheless, InP quantum dots exhibit notable instability in a complex environment due to their highly oxidizable properties. In this study, we present a strategy for synthesizing InP@Al2O3 nanocomposites that have InP quantum dots evenly embedded in a hybrid substrate containing Al2O3 and coupling-interconnection layers of Si and Al. In addition, we used high-power UV irradiation to repair the defects generated during the synthesis process, leading to photoluminescence (PL) intensity increase of more than 10 times. InP@Al2O3 nanocomposites have demonstrated up to 9 h of laser stability, 30 days of water stability and acid stability and 20 days of alkali stability. It has far exceeded that of InP quantum dots and commercially available phosphors. Distal-type light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with stable and standard white emission can be realized by combining red and green InP@Al2O3 nanocomposites with blue LED chips.

Wet Spinning/UV Dual-Curing enabled 3D printable fiber for intelligent electronic devices

Tingxuan Duan,Bo Liu,Yiyan Gao,Guanghui Gao

Conductive fibers are widely used in wearable sensors and implantable devices in real life due to their excellent properties of softness and lightweight. However, most conductive fibers obtained through the simple blending of polymer elastomers and inorganic conductive particles often leads to issues such as uneven conductor distribution and poor mechanical performance. Herein, the composite fiber consists of deep eutectic solvents (composed of choline chloride and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and thermoplastic polyurethane was prepared by wet spinning/ ultraviolet dual-curing method. The uniform distribution of deep eutectic solvents and the resilience of thermoplastic polyurethane ensure that the fiber material can maintain stable signal monitoring capability when subject to various strains over the long term. The composite fiber as motion sensor with an ultra-wide operating range (0–710 %), fast response time (186 ms), long lifetime (stable after 5 months), wide temperature range and excellent weather resistance. It is worth mention that the dual curing process combined with 3D printing technology, allows for the fabrication of flexible sensors in a variety of shapes. 3D printing sensors can be produced underwater to achieve different sensitivities, enabling customization to meet the requirements of applications. This innovative study holds tremendous potential for the next generation of flexible electronic products, such as human motion monitoring and information transmission.

Preparation of UV curable acrylamide modified epoxy resin and performance in 3D printing

Lishuang Yang,Jiayue Wang,Ruili Li,Yujie Gao,Huashan Wang

A novel UV-curable 3D printing resin was synthesized by combining diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and acrylamide (AAM) to create a UV-curable acrylamide-modified epoxy resin prepolymer. This prepolymer was then uniformly mixed with the photoinitiator TPO and the reactive diluent hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). By adjusting the prepolymer content, UV-curable 3D printing resins were formulated with prepolymer concentrations of 30 wt%, 40 wt%, and 50 wt%, respectively. Infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance studies indicated that the amino groups in acrylamide reacted with the epoxy groups. When the prepolymer was added at concentrations of 30 wt% and 40 wt%, the viscosity met the requirements for UV-curable 3D printing. Upon completion of curing, these three distinct resins exhibited high mechanical strength, with tensile strength reaching up to 59.42 MPa and flexural strength peaking at 72.25 MPa. The elongation at break ranged from 2.60 % to 4.91 %. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the UV-cured 3D printed samples, and comparison with the design files revealed that the printed samples exhibited excellent dimensional stability. The study results indicated that this novel UV-curable epoxy vinyl resin formulation possessed excellent mechanical properties, suitable curing characteristics, and high resolution, making it a highly promising prepolymer for UV-curable 3D printing.

Double-layer radiative cooling coating comprising a UV reflective layer and hollow TiO2

Mujia Feng,Zhilin Xia,Zhi Liu,Tu Zhou,Huajun Sun,Xiaofang Liu

Radiative cooling is a passive cooling strategy that requires no external energy input. It can provide continuous cooling for buildings and reduce energy consumption. In this study, a double-layer radiative cooling coating (DHRC) was designed with a bilayer structure. Fluorocarbon resins were used as film-forming substances for the coatings. Hollow rutile TiO 2 and 200 nm diameter ZrO 2 were used as fillers in the lower and upper layers, respectively. The cooling coating exhibited excellent reflective radiation performance, with a solar reflectance (R solar ) of 92.9 % and an emissivity (ε 8-13 μm ) of 95.13 %. In outdoor tests, the average and maximum temperature reductions relative to ambient conditions were 8.44 ℃ and 12.3 ℃, respectively. The water contact angle was 98°, and after 25 days of UV irradiation, the R solar only decreased by 1.09 %. The cooling power calculated using MATLAB was 123.44 W∙m −2 , which was 22.45 W∙m −2 more than that of the commercial cooling coating. The EnergyPlus building energy consumption simulation results showed that among 15 cities around the world, buildings using cooling paints achieved energy saving rates of more than 7 % in 10 cities. The results showed that the DHRC effectively reduced temperature, improved energy efficiency in buildings, and exhibited resistance to staining and aging. This coating provides new ideas for future research on the design and innovation of building cooling coatings.

Surface Modification of Liquid Crystal Polymers by Two Steps UV-Induced Graft Polymerization

Weihua Zhang,Changwen Zhao,Wantai Yang

High efficiently conducting Norrish II type UV-induced graft polymerization on fully aromatic liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) is still a great change due to its lack of sp3 hybridized C–H bonds. Here, a facile strategy for photograft modification of LCP film surfaces was developed. First, the LCP surface was modified by the UV-assisted aminolysis reaction to introduce H atoms that can be effectively abstracted by Norrish II type photosensitizers. Then, photograft polymerization of acrylic acid or styrene/maleic anhydride on the surface of modified LCP was achieved under UV irradiation by using benzophenone (BP) as a photosensitizer. The water contact angle of LCP decreased from 86° to 40° after being photografted with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The highest grafting density reached 7.78 × 10–2 mg/cm2, which is much higher than the unmodified LCP directly photografted with PAA (2.57 × 10–3 mg/cm2). The strategy showed excellent spatial controllability in preparation of the regionally modified LCP surface. Patterned polymer brushes of PAA and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer could be introduced onto the surface of the LCP film with the help of a photomask, which were further used to selectively deposit a silver pattern by electroless plating and immobilize protein, respectively. The PAA-modified LCP deposited with the copper layer exhibited improved adhesive property with copper foil and had a peeling strength of 12.3 N/cm, which was much higher than the peeling strength of blank LCP (0.7 N/cm). This success of the two-step UV-induced graft surface modification of LCP has promising applications in the fields of high-speed electronic communication, biomedical materials, composite materials, and other fields.

Preparation of Millimeter-Sized Li2TiO3 Ceramic Pebbles by Droplet Microfluidics and UV Curing

Hu Xin,Tan Guangfan,Cai Liang,Yi Biao,Xu Dajun,Gao Zeyu,Dong Xiaoxu,Li Yusha,Zhang Yingchun

In order to meet the huge demand for millimetre-sized Li 2 TiO 3 ceramic pebbles for future fusion reactors, the aim of this work was to develop a combination of microfluidic and UV curing techniques to greatly improve the preparation efficiency. By employing a cross-junction microfluidic device, large-sized droplets were controllably generated and subsequently subjected to in-situ UV curing, enabling rapid solidification of resin-based ceramic slurries. Systematic investigations revealed critical processing parameters: (1) The rheological behavior of ceramic slurries was governed by solid content and dispersant concentration, directly influencing droplet stability during microfluidic manipulation. (2) UV curing efficacy depended on exposure time(10 ~ 40 s), aging time (30 ~ 120 s) and solid content, and the optimised conditions allow complete cross-linking of 2 mm green pebbles. (3) Post-sintering at an ultra-low heating rate (0.5 °C/min) produced Li 2 TiO 3 ceramic pebbles with a relatively dense microstructure and high crush load(42 N).This microfluidic and UV curing strategy demonstrates potential process controllability and scalability.

Molecular-level transformations of dissolved black carbon in UV-based advanced oxidation processes

Qi Lu,Qi Han,Hongnan Liu,Li Feng,Yongze Liu,Ziwen Du,Liqiu Zhang

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) released from biochar, is an essential group in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and is widely distributed in aquatic environments. In various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), DBC exhibits enhanced free radical scavenging compared to typical DOM, attributed to its smaller molecular weight and more compacted aromatic structure; however, the molecular-level transformations of DBC in different AOPs , such as UV/H 2 O 2 , UV/PDS, and UV/Chlorine, remain unclear. This study employed a DBC derived from wheat biochar for experimentation. Characterization involved ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and fluorescence excitation-emission-matrix (EEM) spectroscopy, revealing the transformation of DBC through diminished SUVA 254 values and reduced intensity of three-dimensional fluorescence peaks. Further insights into the transformation were gained through Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). After each UV-AOP treatment, a conspicuous augmentation in the oxygen content of DBC was observed. The detailed oxygenation processes were elucidated through mass difference analysis, based on 23 types of typical reactions. Results indicated that oxygenation reactions were most frequently detected in all three UV-AOP treatments. Specifically, the hydroxylation (+O) predominated in UV/H 2 O 2 , while the di-hydroxylation (+2O) prevailed in UV/PDS. UV/Chlorine treatments commonly exhibited tri-hydroxylation (+3O), with the identification of 1194 Cl-BPs of unknown structures. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the molecular transformations of DBC induced by various free radicals in different UV-AOP processes, leading to a better understanding of the different fates of DBC in UV-AOP processes. In addition, the identification of DBC as a precursor of by-products will also contribute to the understanding of how to inhibit the generation of by-products.

Constructing multilevel nanostructures fiber composites for NIR/UV/X-ray multiband electromagnetic protection

Xin Qu,Jinqiu Ye,Yuzhe Huang,Ce Wang,Ping Hu,Rui Zhao,Yong Liu

With the growing threat of electromagnetic interference, developing lightweight and flexible multiband protection materials to shield humans from harmful electromagnetic interference is becoming particularly crucial. However, existing protection materials are bulky and designed primarily for single-band electromagnetic waves. This paper constructs bismuth/tungsten oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube/polyacrylonitrile (Bi/WO 3 /MWCNTs/PAN) nanofiber composites with multilevel nanostructures through electrospinning and post-processing technology for effective NIR/UV/X-ray Multiband Electromagnetic Protection. The porous structure, combined with the strong absorption capabilities of MWCNTs for low-frequency electromagnetic waves and high photoelectric effects of high atomic number materials (Bi/WO 3 ), synergistically achieves remarkable electromagnetic protection performance. This includes 99.6 % near-infrared shielding and 99.95 % against ultraviolet (thickness: 0.12 mm), along with 55.2 % X-ray attenuation and a mass attenuation coefficient of 13.94 cm 2  g −1 at 33 keV (thickness: 1.92 mm). Light weight (0.3 g cm −3 ), fantastic flexibility, and moisture permeability (9.22 kg m −2  d −1 ) endow the material with outstanding wearable performance. In addition, Bi/WO 3 /MWCNTs/PAN also possesses excellent thermal insulation performance (36.96 mW m −1  K −1 ), temperature resistance (289.8 °C), and good electrical insulation. These exceptional performances demonstrate its enormous potential for application in electromagnetic shielding and provide new ideas for designing advanced multiband electromagnetic protection materials.

Harnessing photo-responsive azobenzene-functionalized chitosan nanomicelles for UV protection of photosensitive pesticides

Yugang Song,Song Feng,Rongli Li,Lihua Zhang,Haibo Xie

Photosensitive pesticides are susceptible to ultraviolet (UV) light, leading to their easy photodegradation and short half-life under natural conditions. In this context, it is highly desired to develop novel pesticide formulations with UV protection efficiency. In this study, a photo-responsive amphiphilic chitosan-based copolymer (mPEG-CS-AZO) was synthesized successfully by the grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) as the hydrophilic chains, and azobenzene moieties that serve as both hydrophobic and photo-responsive constituents. The mPEG-CS-AZO was characterized with 1 H NMR, FTIR, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) value was determined to be 0.01 mg/mL. mPEG-CS-AZO nanomicelles can be formed spontaneously by the self-assembly in aqueous solution, which were used for the loading of avermectin (AVM), a representative photosensitive pesticide with poor water solubility. The mPEG-CS-AZO nanomicelles can act as UV protector for the loaded AVM, with a retention rate of 57.37 % following 60 h of UV exposure, attributing to that the irradiated UV light can be consumed through the efficient azobenzene trans-cis isomerization. The AVM release profiles fit the first-order model quite well. Therefore, the mPEG-CS-AZO nanomicelles can be applied as potential prospective carriers for photosensitive pesticides with the purpose of UV protective efficiency and sustained release.

Zn/Gallic Acid/Polyvinylpyrrolidone Coordination Polymer Nanoparticles as Sunscreen for Broadband UV Protection

Jian Chen,Huili Liu,Jing Zhang,Mengmeng Hou,Haojie Cheng,Jiaman Wu,Shouren Zhang,Baocheng Yang

Excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure from sunlight has brought serious threats to human health. Due to their excellent UV absorption and antioxidant properties, natural polyphenols have emerged as green UV filters to replace commercial sunscreens which have alarming biosafety and serious damage to marine environments. However, the commercial application of polyphenols is greatly limited by their narrow wavelength absorption, long-term instability, and deep skin penetration. Herein, broadband UV filters with good antioxidant ability and high security were developed by coordination assembly of gallic acid and Zn2+ with combination of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (Zn-GA-PVP NPs). Owing to the π–π stacking interaction, ligand-to-metal charge transfer, and the carambola-like morphology, the UV shielding range of Zn-GA-PVP NPs is broadened to entire UVA and UVB region through both absorption and reflection of UV rays. The antioxidant ability of Zn-GA-PVP NPs is protected by PVP, which guarantees that they will negatively generate but effectively scavenge reactive oxygen species upon UV exposure. The abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups and proper particle size allow Zn-GA-PVP NPs to have strong skin adhesion but not to penetrate into the deep skin. Meanwhile, Zn-GA-PVP NPs also show good water resistance and easy mechanical removal because of the amphipathy of PVP. Zn-GA-PVP NPs exhibit a high UV protection effect and good biosafety in a photodamage mouse model. This study provides a promising approach for modifying natural polyphenols to better suit their use in commercial sunscreens.
