A novel fluorapatite-type deep-red CsSr3La(PO4)3F:Eu3+ phosphor with intense 5D0-7F4 transition for temperature sensors, plant growth lighting, and w-LEDs

Jiayi Li,Xingyu Chen,Di Gao,Mengxue Zhang,Mengkun Zhang,Siyan Wang,Xiang Liu,Ruijin Yu

The synthesis of CsSr 3 La(PO 4 ) 3 F: x Eu 3+ phosphors ( x  = 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mol%) with fluorapatite-type structure was successfully accomplished through a direct solid-state reaction in this work. A systematic characterization was carried out, encompassing the crystal structure, phase composition , morphology, optical properties , and diverse applications of the samples. The crystalline structure of CsSr 3 La(PO 4 ) 3 F belongs to the hexagonal system with space group P 6 3 / m (176), displaying two polyhedral structures [A Ⅰ O 9 ] and [A Ⅱ O 6 F]. The band gap ( E g ) of the material CsSr 3 La(PO 4 ) 3 F is 5.823 eV. At the excitation of 393 nm, CsSr 3 La(PO 4 ) 3 F:30 mol%Eu 3+ phosphor exhibits a primarily significant emission peak at 703 nm, referring to the 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 transition due to a highly polarizable chemical environment and a distorted coordination polyhedron around Eu 3+ ions. The concentration quenching process is attributed to the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction between Eu 3+ ions, with the maximum luminescence intensity achieved at a doping content of 30 mol%. At 420 K, the emission intensity of the CsSr 3 La(PO 4 ) 3 F:30 mol%Eu 3+ phosphor can still maintain 75.04 % of the emission intensity observed at 300 K. The value of activation energy is 0.18 eV. The maximum absolute and relative thermal sensitivities ( S a and S r ) for the temperature sensor can reach 5.25 × 10 −4  K −1 and 7.71 % K −1 , respectively. The made-up red LED is well-suited to meet the light requirements for the growth and development of plants. The fabricated white light-emitting diode (w-LED) has a relatively high color rendering index ( R a ) of 89 and a suitable correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4392 K. The phosphors have applications in temperature sensors, plant growth lighting, and w-LEDs.

Synthesis, optical properties, and applications of Eu3+, Na+-doped high-color-purity Sr3MgNb2O9 red phosphors for w-LEDs and the detection of latent fingerprints

Houteng Zhao,Yilian Ran,Xiya Miao,Siyu Cheng,Dongze Li,Yufeng Du,Xiang Liu,Ruijin Yu

A series of novel phosphors, doping Eu 3+ and Na + ions in the Sr 3 MgNb 2 O 9 (SMNO) crystal lattice (SMNO: x Eu 3+ , x Na + , x  = 0.5–30 mol%), was successfully synthesized through high-temperature solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Rietveld refinement confirmed the successful synthesis of SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . The phosphor belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and the P 3 ¯ m 1 (No.164) space group. The bandgap energy of SMNO was calculated with Materials Studio and measured with the use of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The excitation spectrum of SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + displays multiple narrow absorption peaks in the violet-blue region as well as a charge transfer band (CTB) near 300 nm, exhibiting the highest peak at 394 nm. Four distinct characteristic peaks are observed in the emission spectrum of SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . Notably, the peak at 601 nm shows the highest emission intensity due to the radiative transition from 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 . By varying doping concentrations, it was determined that an optimal concentration of 5 mol%Eu 3+ resulted in phosphors, with high color purity exceeding 99 %. Concentration quenching is attributed to the nearest neighbor ions interaction. Furthermore, SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + exhibited good stability in 300–480 K, with luminescent intensity remaining 68.6 % at 420 K and 54.4 % at 480 K compared to room temperature (300 K). The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of SMNO:5%Eu 3+ , 5 %Na + is 65.0 %. Both red and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were prepared using SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . The chromaticity coordinates of w-LED were measured as (0.357, 0.376), correlating to a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4685 K and exhibiting a good color rendering index (CRI, R a  = 88). Additionally, the latent fingerprint (LFP) development demonstrated clear visualization of Levels I-III characteristic structures of fingerprints when utilizing SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . These findings suggest promising applications for SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + in w-LED lighting and LFP development.

Sulfonated P-W modified nitrogen-containing carbon-based solid acid catalysts for one-pot conversion of cellulose to ethyl levulinate under water-ethanol medium

Mingqiang Chen,Longyang Li,Yishuang Wang,Defang Liang,Zinan Zhou,Haosheng Xin,Chang Li,Gang Yuan,Jun Wang

Converting cellulose (Cel) into ethyl levulinate (EL) is one of the promising strategies for supplying liquid fuels. In this paper, the prepared sulfonated P-W-modified N-containing carbon-based solid acid catalyst (PWNCS), in which the Polyaniline (PANI) was employed as N and C precursors, successfully converted Cel into EL under the water-ethanol medium. The characterization results demonstrated that a tiny addition of P increased the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) content and defective WO 3 provided the Lewis acid sites (LAS), meanwhile, the sulfonation process did not change the fundamental structure but introduced the sulfonic groups to dramatically increase the acidic content. Therefore, under optimized reaction conditions, PWNCS realized about 100% Cel conversion and 71.61% of EL yield, furthermore, the selectivity of EL reached 89.14%. In addition, the effect of water on the reaction pathway of Cel to EL over PWNCS was proposed. The addition of water generally resulted in the hydration of defective WO 3 to reduce the LAS and increase BAS, which significantly inhibited the side reactions of retro-aldol condensation (RAC) and subsequent etherification reactions during Cel conversion and then improved the selectivity of EL.

Whipped foams from Pickering O/W/O emulsion gel-based fat analogue: Thermal reversibility, oral tribology, and 3D printing characteristics dominated by fat crystals

Liyang Du,Zong Meng

Herein, a novel edible foam based on surfactant-free, gelled Pickering oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) emulsion was developed using fat crystals as stabilizers of water-in-oil and air-in-oil interfaces while protein microgel as the stabilizer of oil-in-water interface, in which multi-chambered droplets and bubbles co-existed. The effects of fat crystals and fat amount, including palm oil (PO), anhydrous milk fat (AMF), and palm stearin (PS), on foam performance were evaluated. AMF-based foams exhibited a better aeration performance and a smoother cream-like sensation than PO, better interfacial stabilization on emulsion and foam were achievable by AMF crystals for greater diffusivity and a homogeneous spatial distribution, thereby allowing engaging in more interactions to support networks. Excessive PS was not conducive to the foam structure and led to a rough oral perception because more aggregated stiff PS crystals tended to destroy the water droplets. The introduction of gas greatly improved the rheological behaviors of O/W/O emulsions, and the viscous dissipation behavior for concentrated-droplets dominated foams was more pronounced at large deformation compared to bubble-filled foams. The microstructure and rheological behaviors further influenced the 3D printing properties of foamy systems as nutraceutical co-loading carriers for epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and lycopene. The tuneability of foam inks was permitted to improve printing accuracy, enhance the tolerance of printed objects to extrusion process through modulating the fat phase, thereby reducing the loss of EGCG and lycopene. This work is expected to provide a versatile soft foamy material with explicit and implicit multi-functionalities that finds interesting application in fat products.

Unveiling the Mechanistic Origin of High Efficiency in Selective Reduction of NO by NH3 over Mn–W/CeO2 Catalysts: Sufficient Acidity and Appropriate Reducibility

Shiju Yang,Xueshuang Yan,Fuzhi He,Zhuliang Chen,Kaizhu Chang,Wan Yang,Futing Xia,Jianjun Chen,Qiulin Zhang

Achieving remarkable activity in selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR) over CeO2-based catalysts was crucial for their industrial application but still faces a tough challenge, mainly owing to the insufficient acidity and overoxidation ability. Herein, the surface acidity and reducibility of CeO2 catalysts were finely tuned over Mn–W/CeO2 to efficiently eliminate NO and reveal the mechanistic origin of superior catalytic properties. Systematic surface and structure analyses revealed that Mn3O4 interacted with WO3 species in the possible form of Mn–O–W, which could enhance the dispersion of WO3 over the CeO2 surface. The resulting well-dispersed WO3 increased the concentration of both Brønsted acid sites and strong acid sites, effectively suppressing the generation of inactive nitrates and thus providing abundant catalytically active sites for the adsorption and activation of NH3. Importantly, the electron withdrawal from Mn by W atoms associated with the shortened Mn–O bond distance resulted in the appropriate reducibility over Mn–W/CeO2. Accordingly, the undesirable overoxidation of NH3 was weakened, thereby greatly increasing the high-temperature (250–400 °C) NH3-SCR activity. DFT calculations and detailed in situ DRIFTS analysis demonstrated that both “E–R” and “L–H” mechanisms contributed mainly to this superior performance.

Research on the Synergistic Enhancement of Corrosion Resistance and Wear Resistance of Ni–W–B-Based Coatings by Nano CeO2 and PDA Functionalized VC

Xianmin Gong,Shijun Xu,Yiling He,Kaijun Wei,Quangang Chen,Qing Yuan,Yi He,Yi Fan,Xingtao Cheng

Metal-based composite coatings have been widely studied for their excellent properties. In order to improve the properties of nickel tungsten boron (Ni–W–B) matrix, Ni–W–B/PC coatings were prepared by electrodeposition in the presence of polydopamine functionalized VC (P–VC) and cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles. The effect of cerium oxide content in the nanomaterials on the properties of Ni–W–B coatings was investigated. The results showed that the prepared coatings were dense, uniform, and crack-free, and the best performance was achieved at a cerium oxide content of 2 g/L. The addition of CeO2 nanoparticles can fill the tiny defects in the coating and optimize the coating structure. The addition of these two materials refines the size of the coating grains. In terms of coating performance, the corrosion resistance of the composite coating was enhanced with the addition of CeO2 at a certain P–VC concentration, and the total impedance of the composite coating was 24,030 Ω·cm2, which was 4.8 times higher than that of the Ni–W–B coating and 1.7 times higher than that of the Ni–W–B/P–VC coating. In addition, the hardness of the Ni–W–B/PC-2 composite coating reached 1033.93 HV at a CeO2 content of 2 g/L. The wear resistance of this composite coating was also optimized. Compared with the Ni–W–B/P–VC composite coating, the average coefficient of friction was reduced by 8.8%, and the wear resistance of the composite coating was further improved, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of the two materials. Moreover, the Ni–W–B/PC film has excellent hardness and corrosion resistance, which is promising for the application in harsh environments.

W and Al co-doping strategy enables bandgap engineering and oxygen stability in Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries

Haoran Li,Ning Wang,Yilian Song,Kang Dong,Youjun Xing,Minghui Zhang,Yukui Wang,Wei Liu,Yongcheng Jin

Recently, research on high-voltage challenges of Ni-rich layered oxide (LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 , x + y + z = 1, where x ≥ 0.6) cathodes has become a focal point for achieving high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to their severe structural and electrochemical degradation under high-voltage operation. This study presents a dual-doping strategy by incorporating tungsten (W 6+ ) and aluminum (Al 3+ ) to enhance the stability and performance of LiNi 0.65 Co 0.15 Mn 0.20 O 2 (NCM) cathodes. Multiscale characterization, combining in situ XRD, electron microscopy (SEM/FIB-SEM/TEM), and surface analysis (XPS/EPR), revealed that W Al co-doping effectively suppresses cation disorder, stabilizes lattice oxygen, and inhibits microcrack propagation. Moreover, density functional theory calculations further elucidate the stabilization mechanisms, indicating that W 6+ and Al 3+ synergistically reduce the bandgap, enhance electronic conductivity, and strengthen metal-oxygen bonds. As a result, the optimized W/Al co-doping cathode (1.5W-0.5Al) delivers outstanding electrochemical performance, exhibiting a high capacity of 205.95 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and remarkable rate capability (148.2 mAh g −1 at 15C). The material demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, maintaining 122.17 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1C (2.5–4.5 V), while achieving over 1000 stable cycles at 15C. This work establishes an effective dual-doping approach for developing high-voltage Ni-rich cathodes, providing both fundamental insights and practical solutions for next-generation energy storage systems.

Significantly improved stability and water retention for Pt supported on W-doped SnO2 to catalyse the oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Wei Cao,Yiyang Mao,Bin Hu,Yongqing Yang,Wei Zhou,Zongping Shao

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been commercialized, but their elevated costs and inadequate catalytic efficiencies for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have hindered broader use. Metal oxides demonstrate high stability and water retention, as well as strong interactions with metal nanoparticles. However, their conductivities and surface areas are lower than those of carbon. This study introduces a novel Pt–oxide–carbon composite ORR catalyst. The Pt nanoparticles were anchored to a W0.02–SnO2–C substrate and demonstrated significantly higher stability and catalytic activity. The composite electrocatalyst exhibited a mass activity (MA) of 0.23 A mgpt−1 at 0.9 V (vs. RHE). The use of Pt/W0.02–SnO2–C as the cathode in a fuel-cell assessment (under H2–air conditions at 80 °C) resulted in a peak power density of 1.04 W cm2, and 89.2% of the initial value was retained after 50 000 cycles over the potential range 0.60–0.95 V. Due to the electronic metal–support interaction (EMSI) between Pt and W0.02–SnO2–C, electron transfer from Pt to the support was accelerated. This diminished the surface electron density of Pt and inhibited the dissolution of Pt nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric (TG) analyses were also conducted to examine the water losses from the W–SnO2–C and pure XC-72R carbon black samples at high temperatures. The water weight in W0.02–SnO2–C decreased by 15.3%, which was lower than the 18.8% decrease from XC-72R. Additionally, in the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) tested at 100% RH and 60% RH, the peak power density of the fuel cell with Pt/W0.02–SnO2–C was decreased by 13.7% at 60%, in contrast to the 25.1% reduction observed for JM Pt/C. These findings highlight the superior water retention of W0.02–SnO2–C, which expedited proton transfer in the catalytic layer. This improvement enhanced the catalytic performance, offering significant advantages for practical PEMFCs.

Modulation of viscosity, microstructure and lipolysis of W/O emulsions by cellulose ethers during in vitro digestion in the dynamic and semi-dynamic gastrointestinal models

Shahid Iqbal,Ping Zhang,Peng Wu,Quanyi Yin,Khemayanto Hidayat,Xiao Dong Chen

In this study, W/O emulsions incorporated with various proportions of two hydrocolloids , namely, methylcellulose (MC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), were prepared. The shear viscosity, microstructure, and lipolysis of the W/O emulsions before and during in vitro digestion in the dynamic (DIVHS) and semi-dynamic gastrointestinal models were evaluated and compared. The shear viscosity of both emulsions increased with the addition of MC and HPMC content up to a certain limit (0.5–2%), whereas it significantly decreased at a higher addition level (4%) due to the increased flocculation and coalescence in higher cellulose ethers. The HPMC emulsions (2 wt % in aqueous phases) showed higher viscosity and larger droplet size than the equivalent MC emulsions before and during simulated digestion, accompanied by the lower extent of lipolysis. These results are in line with the formation of a more compact and stronger gel structure in HPMC emulsions, which could retard lipase adsorption at the W–O interface. For both emulsions at the same concentration (40 wt%), a higher extent of free fatty acid (FFA) release was found during digestion in the dynamic system (HPMC ꞊ 62%, MC ꞊ 72%) compared to that in the semi-dynamic model (HPMC ꞊ 58%, MC ꞊ 70%). This behavior was supported by the smaller droplet size of emulsions digesta collected from the dynamic system having a larger surface area. Overall, the present study suggested that the dynamic DIVHS system was more effective in enzymatic hydrolysis of the W/O emulsions investigated than the semi-dynamic model under the current experimental conditions. This work had provided valuable insights into the modulation of the structural and digestive properties of W/O emulsions by the addition of MC and HPMC, which could be meaningful for the development of healthier emulsion-based food products ( e.g ., margarine and spreads) with reduced lipid digestibility.

On the fabrication of ultrafine-grained potassium-doped tungsten: Mechanical milling and spark plasma sintering of K-doped W powder prepared by evaporation-condensation method

Meng She,Jianming Nie,Xiaoyan Shu,Lin Feng,Jun Tang,Bo Huang

Bubble strengthened materials have received lots of attention in recent years, and among them, potassium-doped tungsten (W-K) is extremely desirable for very high-temperature applications such as plasma-facing materials in fusion reactors. However, it is difficult to fabricate ultrafine-grained W-K bulk materials by traditional methods. In this study, a novel preparation method of ultra-fine-grained bubble-strengthened material is presented. Unlike traditional routes, W-K mixed powder was prepared by evaporating and condensing pure K on the surface of nanoscale W powder. Two W-K mixing methods using this evaporation-condensation route were developed. Mechanical milling process combined with regular SPS sintering were carried out on the W-K mixed powder, which successfully manufactured ultrafine-grained (0.9 μm) W-K bulk material with a high density (96.4%). This study can provide important reference for the fabrication of other bubble-strengthened materials.

Determination of Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Hf, Ta, and W in seawater by N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine extraction chromatographic resin and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

Shengling Sun,Jie Li

A method has been developed for the determination of zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf), niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), and tin (Sn) in seawater by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS). The method is based on separation of the seven elements by extraction chromatography using N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine (BPHA) supported on a microporous acrylic ester polymeric resin. The optimized procedure indicates that the BPHA resin has high selective adsorption for Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Hf, Ta, and W (known as fluoride soluble elements), whereas other interference and matrix elements are minimally adsorbed. The optimized eluent mixture with their molarity gives satisfactory recoveries for all analytes. The recovery can be achieved 99% for Zr, 97% for Nb, 97% for Mo, 99% for Sn, 99% for Hf, 95% for Ta, and 98% for W, respectively, by eluting with 6   mL of 6   mol   L −   1 HF/1   mol   L −   1 HCl. Furthermore, the technique for separation and enrichment of these elements provides a low total method blank. The detection limits for this method are 0.5   ppt for Zr, 0.2   ppt for Nb, 1.7   ppt for Mo, 1.0   ppt for Sn, 0.1   ppt for Hf, 0.1   ppt for Ta, and 0.3   ppt for W, respectively. The validity of the method is evaluated by replicate analyses of seawater reference materials; the precision of the results is better than 3% (RSD, n   =   4), and the results are in good agreement with certified values. The established procedure has proved to be both practical and effective for seawater sample analyses.

Ligand-Free CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dots in Silica-Aerogel Composites with Enhanced Stability for w-LED and Display by Substituting Pb2+ with Pr3+ or Gd3+ Ions

Chong Zhao,Yingkui Li,Wanggui Ye,Xiaofei Shen,Zicheng Wen,Xuanyi Yuan,Yongge Cao,Chaoyang Ma

Colloidal all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) feature with tunable high-efficiency photoluminescence from blue to red for optoelectronic applications but suffer from instability under water moisture, UV light illumination, high-temperature shock, as well as oxygen erosion. Previous work to improve LHP NCs stability was mainly focused on either glass bulk sealed LHP quantum dots (QDs) with low quantum efficiency, or mesoporous silica matrixes confined LHP QDs with organic ligands still existing. Here, a facile, noncolloidal, ligand-free LHP QDs growth with physical confinement is proposed by integrating the growth of perovskite QDs with the fabrication process of hydrophobic silica-aerogel powders (SAPs). As a result, the as-synthesized mono- and mixed-cesium-lead-halide QDs @ SAPs composites show tunable photoluminescence from purple to deep red. Besides, the Pr 3+ ions doped CsPbBr 3 QDs @ SAPs composites exhibit moderate quantum efficiency, excellent stability under UV illumination, water moisture as well as temperature variation. Furthermore, performances of white LED device encapsulated Pr 3+ doped composite with blue GaN chip and commercial red (Sr, Ca)AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ phosphor are evaluated. This work demonstrates a facile and general strategy for synthesizing high-stable all-inorganic cesium-lead-halide QDs for applications in white LED and display devices.
