Z-type composite type II ternary CNFeOS heterojunction composite photocatalyst for enhancing the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Tong Zhou,Guohui Dong,Jiahao Geng,Kai Han,Chenyang Xiao

In this study, a novel Z-scheme + II-type ternary heterojunction nanocomposite was prepared by one-step solvothermal method using g-C 3 N 4 , FeS 2 and Fe 2 O 3 as raw materials. The successful preparation of this ternary heterojunction was confirmed by the structural analysis and the surface morphology study. Compared with g-C 3 N 4 , the ternary photocatalyst showed excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The enhancement of photocatalytic activity is mainly due to the increase of light absorption capacity, effective separation of carrier in space, and increase of electron transfer channels in this Z-Scheme + II-type composite system. The scavenger test and electron spin resonance spectroscopy show that O 2 − is the main oxidizing free radical in the photocatalytic system. Based on liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer, a possible degradation pathway of TC was proposed. This study opens up a new idea for the design and synthesis of efficient Z-Scheme + II-type photocatalysts for environmental purification.

Z-scheme WO 3 /AgI heterojunctions on carbon fiber (CF) cloth were fabricated through in-situ hydrothermal method and chemical bath deposition route. The CF@WO 3 /AgI cloth achieved highly efficient photocatalytic abilities under visible light , which could eliminate 95.7 % of Rhodamine B (RhB) in 70 min and 70.0 % of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) in 110 min, superior to those of CF, CF@WO 3 and CF@AgI cloths. Moreover, the catalyst was able to achieve 7.0 ± 0.16 log 10 CFU/mL reduction of E. coli cells within 40 min. Recycling test confirmed the repeatability and stability of CF@WO 3 /AgI cloth. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the increased visible light utilization, accelerated charge carriers separation and high photo-redox capabilities which came from the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction. This work provided inspiration for the construction of high-efficiency flexible photocatalysts for environmental decontamination .

Haohuan Yuan,Wenting Xiao,Xin Zhang,Jiao Bao,Wei Li,Bo Huang,Guannan He

Efficient carrier separation and high electron migration efficiency are essential for sustainable H 2 energy production via photocatalysis . In this work, a Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ti 3 C 2 MXene/g-C 3 N 4 all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst is constructed by a series of processes, including low temperature calcination , etching, ultrasonication and solvothermal process. The appropriate energy band structures of g-C 3 N 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S enable the formation of the Z-scheme system, achieving efficient carrier separation. The Ti 3 C 2 MXene flakes assembled between g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S particles can accelerate the charge migration rate in the system. The optimized ternary composite exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 13.7 mmol g −1  h −1 , which is much higher than that of the pure g-C 3 N 4 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S. Meanwhile, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) value of the composite at 420 nm reaches up to 24.07 % and exhibits high stability. Based on the characterization, the photocatalytic mechanism of carrier transfer in the Z-scheme heterojunction is also revealed. The finding of this article provides insights into the high efficiency of carrier transfer and separation in the photocatalytic reactions.

Visible-light-driven tetracycline hydrochloride degradation via ZnTi-LDHs/Ce2S3 Z-scheme heterojunctions: Performance and mechanistic analysis

Wei Liang,Xiangling Zhang,Chen Wang,Jing Bai,Xuhao Li,Yajia Mao,Jixian Cai,Yifan Li,Siqi Chang,Zhouying Xu,Yu Jiang

The refractory and hard-to-dispose tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) poses an enormous threat to human health and the water environment. Herein, a novel Z-scheme ZnTi-LDHs/Ce 2 S 3 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully developed for TC degradation under visible light conditions. This sophisticated material demonstrated a remarkable degradation rate of 0.0124 min −1 , marking a noteworthy advancement compared to ZnTi-LDHs, Ce 2 S 3 , and the commonly reported LDHs/LDHs-based composites, with an approximate one-order-of-magnitude improvement. The inherent synergy between Ce 2 S 3 and LDHs manifested as a Z-scheme charge transfer channel, augmenting visible-light absorption, and fostering carrier separation. Both O 2 ·- and h + played critical roles in the TC degradation process, mediating reductive and oxidative pathways, respectively. ZnTi-LDHs/Ce 2 S 3 demonstrated robust reusability and broad applicability for degrading diverse dyes and antibiotics. This work demonstrated a promising protocol for crafting efficient Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts based on LDHs and expanded our understanding and potential applications of photocatalytic degradation mechanisms for antibiotics.

Visible light photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride using chitosan-loaded Z-scheme heterostructured material BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4

Jiawen Zhang,Haoyang Xu,Yage Zheng,Yue Shen,Chaoqun Mu,Yao Wang,Aili Niyazi,Zhixian He,Zhiqiang Zhang,Liang Zhang,Juanqin Xue

In this work, a Z -scheme heterostructured BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 material was synthesized and immobilized on chitosan (CTS) to obtain the BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 /CTS photocatalytic material for photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (CTC).Our findings indicate that the composite material BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 , as well as the BiOCOOH/O-gC 3 N 4 /CTS composite membrane , displayed a significantly higher efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of CTC compared to BiOCOOH alone, owing to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis . Following four cycles of use, the composite material retained around 96 % of its initial photocatalytic degradation activity. The addition of CTS in the photocatalytic material resolved issues such as aggregation and difficult recovery commonly encountered with powder materials, thereby facilitating effective collision between the photocatalytic active sites and CTC. Experimental and theoretical calculations provided confirmation that the combination of BiOCOOH and O-gC 3 N 4 effectively enhanced the light absorption capacity and photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of environmental factors such as pH value and anions on the photocatalytic degradation experiment, which offers valuable insights for the application of composite catalysts in wastewater treatment .

Synthesis of ZnPc/BiVO4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Under Visible Light Irradiation

Lulu Zhong,Liuyun Chen,Xinling Xie,Zuzeng Qin,Tongming Su

The construction of semiconductor heterojunctions is an effective strategy to improve the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of organic pollutants. Herein, ZnPc/BiVO4Z-scheme heterojunction was synthesized via a physical mixing method and was used for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. Compared with BiVO4and ZnPc, the 15ZnPc/BiVO4sample exhibited improved light absorption capacity, and the electron-hole separation efficiency and redox capacity were enhanced due to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction. The 15ZnPc/BiVO4composite exhibited an optimal TC degradation rate of 83.1% within 120 min. Additionally, 15ZnPc/BiVO4exhibited excellent stability in cycling experiments, which maintained a high TC degradation rate of 79.5% after four cycles. Free radical trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals (·O2−) were the main active substances in the photocatalytic degradation of TC.

Synergetic enhancement effect of MOF-derived porous ZnO/ Co3O4 cage Z-scheme heterostructure for high-performance photodegradation

Zerong Wang,Huimin Yin,Yingli Guo,Yongtao Gao,Junhui Liu,Junhe Han,Mingju Huang

Using solar energy for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is a clean and effective method for treating the increasingly severe problem of environmental pollution. Herein, porous ZnO/Co 3 O 4 cages with improved charge separation ability was designed via a facile ZIF-8@ZIF-67-derived approach for tetracycline (TC) photodegradation. Great photodegradation performance and good stability were achieved. The degradation rate was as high as 97 % within 60 min. The enhancement mechanism of TC photodegradation was investigated. The porous structure of ZnO/Co 3 O 4 produced a number of active sites. The effective utilized spectrum was extended from the ultraviolet to the red region. The presence of two mixed valence states of Cobalt, Co 2+ and Co 3+ , increased the density of defect states and was conducive to the adsorption of TC. The composite had a Z-scheme heterojunction, in which strong oxidative capacity can be maintained, combination of electrons and holes was greatly reduced and efficient charge transfer occurred. This study would give new insights into the design of new photocatalysts with synergetic enhancement effect for TC photodegradation.

Synthesis of Iron Phthalocyanine/CeO2 Z-scheme nanocomposites as efficient photocatalysts for degradation of 2, 4-chlorophenol

Xiaoyu Chu,Xinrui Wang,Shuo Tian,Yongkuo Zhao,Shikai Liu,Hong Yan,Yan Shang

Modulating the photogenerated electrons of CeO2 to activate O2 and efficiently photocatalytic degradation of chlorophenols is a highly desired goal. Herein, we have successfully fabricated FePc/CeO2 heterojunction through H-bond induced assembly. The photocatalytic degradation of 2, 4-DCP by the amount-optimized FePc/CeO2 nanocomposite was improved by 3 times compared with pure CeO2. By means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and single wavelength photocurrent spectroscopy, it is confirmed that the excellent photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction, which promotes charge separation and transfer, and the introduction of FePc broadens the visible light absorption range of heterojunction. Moreover, O2 temperature-programmed-desorbed curves and electrochemical O2 reduction measurements results demonstrate that the single Fe-N4(II) site in FePc is more conducive to promoting O2 activation than that of other metal phthalocyanines. Based on in situ FT-IR and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS), a possible reaction pathway of 2, 4-DCP degradation was proposed. This study provides a novel strategy to prepare CeO2 based Z-scheme heterojunctions with abundant monoatomic sites for pollutant degradation.

Z-scheme heterojunction Cu2O/CuO/C with broad-spectrum light absorption as efficient photocatalytst for hydrogen evolution

Wang Liping,Tao Xin,Ruan Yuxian,Yu Ying,Wang Zhijuan,Ming Yingchun

Photocatalytic water splitting has emerged as a pivotal strategy to tackle global energy crises and environmental degradation by producing clean hydrogen. In this study, a novel Cu 2 O/CuO/C composite photocatalyst was prepared from cupric nitrate trihydrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid via the two-step solvothermal-calcination method as the photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. Advanced characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), transient photocurrent responses, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and Mott-Schottky test, confirmed the composite's excellent visible and near-infrared light absorption and Z-scheme heterojunction architecture. Its remarkable performance originates from the effective p-n heterojunction formed between Cu 2 O and CuO. Upon a 300 W xenon lamp (350 < λ < 780 nm) illumination, photogenerated electrons and holes are produced in Cu 2 O and CuO, respectively. Electrons from the conduction band (CB) of CuO migrate to the valence band (VB) of Cu 2 O, recombining with holes. This mechanism not only enhances charge separation and extends carrier lifetime but also preserves the strong reducing capability of Cu 2 O, significantly boosting photocatalytic activity. The composite achieved a hydrogen production rate of 511.07 μmol/(g h). Notably, it retained stable performance over three consecutive cycles without significant activity loss, demonstrating robust durability. These findings highlight the potential of Cu 2 O/CuO/C Z-scheme heterojunctions as efficient, stable photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen evolution.

Novel construction of Z–scheme g–C3N4/PDI organic photocatalyst for excellent sulfamethoxazole degradation rate in water

Yali Song,Ziyan Li,Cairong Yang,Xiaoyu Wen,Long Huang,Xiaojing Zhang,Yongpeng Ma,Qiong Wang,Hongzhong Zhang

To improve the generation of main active substances (·O 2 – and h + ) in sulfamethoxazole (SMX) photocatalytic processes by g–C 3 N 4 , graphitic carbon nitride/perylene diimide (g–C 3 N 4 /PDI, CNPDI) organic photocatalyst with Z–scheme heterojunction was synthesized. Simultaneously, the in–situ self–assembled PDI was realized by introducing short straight–chain alkanes containing terminal carboxylic acid groups at the imide position of PDI molecule and regulating the pH value of the reaction system. g–C 3 N 4 and PDI successfully combined via the formation of –O C–NH– during the preparation process. The π–π interaction between them was conducive to the charge migration at the heterogeneous interface. The addition of PDI in g–C 3 N 4 significantly improved the absorption ability of visible light and facilitated the transportation of photogenerated carriers, leading to enhanced photocatalytic properties. When 2 mg of PDI combined with 500 mg of g–C 3 N 4 , the obtained CNPDI–2 demonstrated the optimal degradation rate for SMX. When reacted for 120 min under visible light, the SMX photodegradation rate by CNPDI–2 was up to 96.3 % because more ·O 2 – and h + generated and participated in the reaction process. The corresponding pseudo–first–order kinetic constant (0.0281 min –1 ) in CNPDI–2 photocatalytic system was 2.4 and 51 times than that in g–C 3 N 4 system (0.0105 min –1 ) and PDI system (0.0005 min –1 ), respectively. Additionally, CNPDI–2 demonstrated the commendable stability, which was suitable for SMX removal in water environment.

Novel Z-scheme CdS/CoMoO4 Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Lan Meng,Zhang Diya,Dong Xiaoli,Zheng Nan,Gou Jialin,Liu Yujun

How to inhibit the photogenerated carrier recombination for enhancing the photocatalytic properties of semiconductor is still a key scientific problem to be solved. In this study, a novel Z-scheme CdS/CoMoO 4 (CdS/CMO) heterojunction photocatalyts were constructed by a two-step hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic degradation properties of CdS/CMO heterojunction photocatalysts for RhB was significantly enhanced compared to CdS and CoMoO 4 . The remarkable photocatalytic degradation efficiency could be credited to the expanding visible light absorption and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction. This work demonstrates a novel Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for the highly effective removal of organic dyes, providing fresh ideas for water purification.

Fabrication of Z-Scheme CuPc/TiO2 Heterojunctions with Oriented Charge Transport Channels for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Yanan Qiao,Ziqian Gao,Rui Hua,Houde She,Helin Ye,Lei Wang,Jingwei Huang,Qizhao Wang

In this study, hollow CuPc nanotubes were synthesized using a one-step solvothermal technique and loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles based on electrostatic interactions thereby overcome the inherent limitations of TiO2. The interfacial electric field formed by electrostatic coupling between CuPc and TiO2 effectively promoted spatial charge separation, as evidenced by a 12-fold enhancement in CO yield compared to pure TiO2 under visible light irradiation. Through energy band analysis and DFT calculations, the Z-type heterojunction mechanism between CuPc and TiO2 has been revealed. This mechanism facilitates the migration of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of TiO2 to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of CuPc, while directing holes to migrate in the opposite direction. This spatial charge separation preserves the electrons’ high reduction capability, allowing them to participate effectively in the CO2 reduction reaction. This work highlights the potential of Z-scheme heterojunctions in designing efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction, offering a foundation for future research in advanced photocatalytic materials.
