N/P Co-doped Micro-/Mesoporous Carbons Derived from Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone–Zn0.2@ZIF-67 with Tunable Metal Valence States towards Efficient Water Splitting

Yang Ming,Yidi Wang,Jiachuan Hua,Chang Liu,Jiashen Li,Bin Fei

Graphical A facile PVP assisted Zn 0.2 @ZIF-67 framework is thermally converted to micro-mesoporous carbon with abundant cobalt particles. Post phosphorus doping into carbon shells improves catalysts’ conductivity and modulates the electronic environment of Co element, facilitating efficient water splitting. The enhancement of electrocatalytic water splitting by modulating the intrinsic electronic environment of active sites has recently attracted lots of interest. Herein, cobalt-cobalt oxide (CoO x ) at carbons derived from metal-organic frameworks (Zn 0.2 @ZIF-67) have been modulated by using post-phosphine (P-CoO x /NCs), acid leaching (Co/NCs), and oxidation (O−CoO x /NCs) treatments. With the assistance of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, the resultant carbons obtain a high surface area (645.7 m 2 g −1 ) as well as a micro-/mesoporous system after carbonization at 920 °C. These advantages not only enhance the catalytic performance of catalysts, but also facilitate the charge transfer between interfaces towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, the constructed water splitting cell fabricated with 900P-CoO x /NCs requires a low overpotential (89 mV and 343 mV vs. reservable hydrogen electrode respectively) to drive HER and OER at 10 mA cm −2 , a low cell voltage (1.69 V), and a high stability with only 4.9 % decay after 15 hours operation in the alkaline medium.

Ni2P@carbon core-shell nanorod array derived from ZIF-67-Ni: Effect of phosphorization temperature on morphology, structure and hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Suqi He,Suyu He,Feng Gao,Xin Bo,Qingxiang Wang,Xianjue Chen,Jingjing Duan,Chuan Zhao

MOFs attracted considerable attention as morphology templates and constitution precursors for synthesis of multiple functional nanocomposites due to their diverse and robust framework structure. In this work, a nickel-phosphide@carbon (Ni 2 P@C) composite with unique nanorod array morphology was synthesized via a facile phosphorization process using Ni(II)-zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67-Ni) as the precursor. And the effect of phosphorization temperature on the morphology and structure of the products were carefully investigated. The products obtained under different phosphorization temperature were utilized as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed that Ni 2 P@C nanorod array achieved under the phosphorization temperature of 400 °C demonstrated the highest electrocatalytic activity toward HER in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution with a low overpotential of 186 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Also, high catalytic durability and chemical stability of the Ni 2 P@C nanorod array for HER were achieved. Combing the morphology and structure characterization experiments, the reason for high HER performance of Ni 2 P@C nanorod array obtained at the phosphorization temperature of 400 °C was discussed. This work provides a new guidance for the synthesis of high-performance MOFs-derived electrocatalyst for electrochemical HER.

Palladium Nanoparticles Immobilized on Magnetic Porous Carbon Derived from ZIF-67 as Efficient Catalysts for the Semihydrogenation of Phenylacetylene under Extremely Mild Conditions

Xinlin Li,Wei Zhang,Yansheng Liu,Rong Li

Graphical Magnetic personality : A new magnetic porous carbon derived from metal–organic framework is synthesized through the direct carbonization of ZIF-67 crystals and utilized as a support for Pd nanocatalysts. The catalysts are tested in the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene under extremely mild conditions. A new magnetic porous carbon (MDPC) derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was synthesized successfully through the direct carbonization of ZIF-67 crystals and utilized as a support for Pd nanocatalysts. The prepared MDPC not only retains the original morphology of ZIF-67 crystals but also provides a high surface area and excellent magnetic properties. The designed catalysts (Pd-MDPC) were tested in the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene under extremely mild conditions. The Pd nanoparticles are highly dispersed on the MDPC matrix without aggregation and exhibited an excellent catalytic activity and high selectivity toward olefins under mild conditions (25 °C, H 2 1 atm). The Pd-MDPC catalysts were further investigated in the semihydrogenation of several other terminal alkynes. Compared with most traditional carbon materials, such as activated carbon and carbon nanotubes, the MDPC possesses an admirable magnetism so that it could be separated magnetically from the reaction system. Our study indicates that MOF-derived porous carbon is a suitable support for noble-metal nanocatalysts and has promise in the field of nanocatalysis.

Encapsulation of nano-sized ZIF-67 derived Co-NC on Au-loaded halloysite as composite catalyst for superior cooperative reduction of nitroaromatic pollutants

Jiasheng Fang,Zhenting Huang,Ming Chen,Shuo Zhao,Zhihui Liang,Qiongfang Zhuo,Yongfu Qiu

The utilization of natural clay minerals for synthesizing nano-sized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) supported materials offers great advantages for rational design of innovative catalysts, which promotes the low-cost and large-scale environmental remediation applications. This work reported a facile and scalable encapsulation-pyrolysis strategy to prepare novel Au-HNTs@Co-NC core-shell catalyst for catalytic reduction of nitroaromatic pollutants. The HNTs were modified with aminosilane on the external surface for effectively anchoring well-dispersed and ultrasmall Au NPs. Uniform nano-sized ZIF-67 crystals controllably embraced the Au-HNTs via in-situ growth induced by electrostatic adsorption. The N 2 atmosphere pyrolysis at 550 °C resulted in Co NPs embedded into N-doped carbon substrates, and transformed ZIF-67 crystals into Co-NC layers for preferable encapsulation and stabilization of Au NPs. The as-prepared Au-HNTs@Co-NC-550 catalyst manifested splendid catalytic performance for p-nitrophenol reduction, and achieved the reaction rate constant and TOF value estimated as 2.025 min −1 and 49.25 min −1 , which significantly exceeded the behaviors of as-prepared control materials. Moreover, the catalyst also displayed excellent catalytic capability toward the reduction of nitroanilines and homologues and isomers of p-nitrophenol, indicative of its decent general applicability. After 8 cycles of reactions, the catalyst still retained brilliant reusability and structural stability with good magnetic property for expedient separation. The advantageous hollow core-shell structure combining HNTs and ZIF-67 derivatives enhanced the reactant diffusion and transfer. The N doping and electronegativity difference between Co and Au aroused higher electron uptake and facilitated electron transport during the reduction process. Meanwhile, the Co–H and Au–H bonds formed the strong synergistic effect for superior cooperative catalytic performance of the catalyst.

Ionic liquid modified Co-N-C catalyst derived from ZIF-67/C with enhanced catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte

Gongheng Zhang,Abdullah Ali Mohammed Ahmed Al-Anzah,Fengxiang Yin,Jie Zhang,Guoru Li,Biaohua Chen,Qiuyue Gao,Xian Tong Yu,Yuqian Sun

The precursor ZIF-67/xC-T was prepared by solvothermal and pyrolysis methods. A series of ZIF-67/xC-T-yIL catalysts were then prepared by modifying the surface of the precursor with [BMIM][NTf 2 ] ionic liquid . The results showed that [BMIM][NTf 2 ] as sulfur and nitrogen sources, N, S co-doped carbon can improve the catalytic activity of ORR . Meanwhile, [BMIM][NTf 2 ] formed an oxygen-rich layer on the catalyst surface, which increased the contact between oxygen and the active sites, reduced the alkaline strength of the catalyst surface, and improved the desorption ability of the catalyst to the product. Therefore, the ZIF-67/xC-T-yIL catalyst exhibited better ORR activity in an alkaline electrolyte than the catalyst without [BMIM][NTf 2 ]. Among the ZIF-67/xC-T-yIL catalysts, ZIF-67/1.2 C-600–6IL demonstrated the best ORR catalytic activity, with a half-wave potential of 0.86 V and a limiting current density of 5.21 mA cm −2 in 0.1 mol L −1 KOH, which was comparable to that of commercial 20% wt% Pt/C.

In-situ fabrication of TiO2/ZIF-67 composite film with electron storage characteristics for significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical cathodic protection of 304 stainless steel

Shouwu Xu,Zhilong Zhang,Hailin Zhang,Zhiwei Li,Haoping Peng,Sibudjing Kawi,Aijun Xie,Ping Qiu

The development of a photoelectrochemical cathodic protection film with electron storage capabilities offers a feasible method for metal protection in the absence of light. In this study, we designed and fabricated an innovative TiO 2 /ZIF-67 composite film in situ. The synthesized ZIF-67 nanoparticles with a dodecahedral structure not only facilitate contact with the electrolyte but also significantly broaden the sunlight absorption range. When coupled with 304 SS, the TiO 2 /ZIF-67-20 composite film demonstrated a minimum OCP value of −0.675 V (vs. SCE) under illumination. Notably, even after 10 h of light deprivation, the OCP remained lower than that of 304 SS. This sustained protection can be attributed to the electronic storage and release capabilities of the Co element within the TiO 2 /ZIF-67 composite, ensuring continuous cathodic protection for 304 SS during both illuminated and dark conditions. This study contributes valuable insights into achieving all-weather cathodic protection for 304 SS.

A strategy toward enhancing the lithium-storage performance of anode materials of ZIF-67-derived Co/N-doped carbon nanocubes by Ni-Co3ZnC

Rui Wang,Yixin Yan,Lu Wang,Xiaoya Kang,Shengtao Niu,Youzhi Wu,Fen Ran

Metal-organic framework draws widespread interest on account of its large specific surface areas, which could be employed as sacrificial templates to synthesize Co/N-doped carbon nanocubes. Herein, Ni-Co 3 ZnC is used as an additive for improving the electrical conductivity as well as lithium-storage performance of Co/N-doped carbon because of the conductivity and catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles . Co/N-doped carbon nanocubes and Co/N-doped carbon-Ni-Co 3 ZnC anode materials are prepared through one-step precipitation and high-temperature calcination methods. The lithium-storage capabilities of Co/N-doped carbon and Co/N-doped carbon-Ni-Co 3 ZnC are investigated. Co/N-doped carbon-Ni-Co 3 ZnC manifests good electrochemical performance at 2.0 A g −1 compared to Co/N-doped carbon. The initial reversible capacities of Co/N-doped carbon and Co/N-doped carbon-Ni-Co 3 ZnC are 877.4/548.4 and 1, 170.5/557.3 mAh g −1 , and the reversible capacities could be maintained at 152.6/152.4 and 276.8/276.5 mAh g −1 after 2, 000 cycles. The electrode kinetic results evidence that Ni-Co 3 ZnC could enhance the conductivity of Co/N-doped carbon. The data provide a theoretical basis for improving the lithium-storage performance of prevalent anode materials.

Elaeagnus angustifolia L. Gum/Weak Acid as Encapsulating/Etching Combo to Make Parted ZIF-67(Co)/Polysaccharide-Derived Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Acetaminophen Detection

Yihan Zhang,Yiliyasi Baikeli,Zehong Gao,Longyi Chen

Development of polysaccharide biomass for efficient electrocatalytic sensing applications is important for its natural resource utilization and detection application. Elaeagnus angustifolia L. gum is chosen as an electron-rich macromolecule of polysaccharide as the encapsulating agent to surround etched parted ZIF-67(Co) particles. The three electron-rich molecules trithiocyanuric acid, urea, and sodium hypophosphite are selected as the weak acid etching agents, which could etch ZIF-67(Co) microcubes. This fragmentation of ZIF-67(Co) is attributed to the electron-rich molecules disrupting the internal coordination bonds of ZIF-67(Co), thus producing fragmented particles with increased exposed active electrocatalytic spots. Further carbonization of the mixture is processed to obtain the electrocatalyst ZIF-67(Co)-NPS-doped biomass carbon (ZNBC). The ZNBC/GCE sensor shows a significant improvement in electrochemical performance with a linear range of 0.5 to 100 μM, a sensitivity of 10.04 μA μM–1 cm–2, a limit of detection of 0.052 μM, and good selectivity. The ZNBC/GCE sensor was also used in rapid and accurate electrochemical sensing of APAP in urine, lake water, and pharmaceutical capsule preparation samples with good recoveries. This electron-rich macromolecule/molecule as an encapsulating/etching combo strategy provides insight into the usage of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. gum and top-down design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for potential applications in electrocatalyst design.

Rationally Designed Flame-Retardant ZIF-67@γ-CD-MOFs@APP: An Integrated Hierarchical Nanostructure and Its Application in Polypropylene Towards Fire Resistance Enhancement

Junying Wu,Ruijie Guo,Houting Kang,Yanming Wang,Jingyuan Tian,Jierong Wang,Hong Yan

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential in improving the fire safety of polymer materials. To improve the fire resistance and smoke suppression of polypropylene (PP), a flame-retardant system ZIF-67@γ-CD-MOFs@APP incorporating multiple flame-retardant elements was designed and applied to PP. The coated PP passed UL-94 V-0 level with the LOI up to 36.2% and char residue of 12.47%. The PHRR, PSPR, COP, and CO 2 P of coated PP were reduced by 52.65%, 24.72%, 36.49%, and 52.29%, respectively, compared to neat PP. In addition, the tPHRR, tPSPR, tCOP, and tCO 2 P were prolonged by 405.3%, 345.4%, 427.8%, and 405.3% compared to pure PP, allowing more escape time when facing a real fire. Integrating the hierarchical porous structure provided by ZIF-67 and γ-CD-MOFs, catalytic carbonization of transition metal Co and the nitrogen-containing ligand, ZIF-67@γ-CD-MOFs@APP played a flame-retardant role both in the condensed and gas phase, endowing PP with enhanced flame retardancy and smoke suppression. The “all-in-one” strategy provides helpful insights for constructing fire retardant system with multi-level nanostructure.

Efficient removal of dyes and antibiotics from oily wastewater by polypropylene/ZIF-67 composite membranes with underwater superoleophobicity and persulfate advanced oxidation processes

Yuling Yang,Xiaoli Zeng,Zhixiang Zeng,Linghui Wang,Ping Zhu,Lei Tang,Lijing Zhu

Porous membranes have been fabricated and modified for the separation and purification of wastewater. Although they always suffer from fouling caused by various materials such as oils, dyes, and antibiotics. It is difficult to deal with the boring membrane fouling by one antifouling strategy including hydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity. In this work, a synergistic antifouling mechanism combining low oil adhesive underwater superoleophobicity and excellent persulfate advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) performances was developed by facilely loading ZIF-67 catalysts on polypropylene (PP) membranes. The as-prepared composite membranes have stable underwater superoleophobicity and low oil adhesion, which can efficiently separate oil from oil-in-water emulsion and prevent oil adhesion. Moreover, the ZIF-67 catalysts on the composite membranes have excellent degradation performances against various foulants such as methylene blue (MB), tetracycline (TC), and levofloxacin (LVFX), which endow the composite membrane with enhanced antifouling properties during the separation of an oil-in-water emulsion containing MB, TC, and LVFX. The synergistic antifouling mechanism of low oil adhesive underwater superoleophobicity and advanced PS-AOPs provides a facile and efficient strategy for improving the antifouling of the porous membranes in real wastewater purification.

Tailoring the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of nickel-cobalt sulfides derived from ZIF-67 by cerium doping to enhance the overall water splitting performance

Tian Lei,Jin Liang,YaXi Zhang,Guang Yang,Li Zhang

To stay current with energy development, designing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media is urgent. Herein, cerium is incorporated into ZIF-derived sulfides to create (Ce)NiCo–S/NF, a composite material with a nanogrid-like hierarchical structure. Importantly, it required a low overpotential of 136 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for the HER. For the OER, it achieved current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 209 and 245 mV, respectively. Creating a nanogrid-like hierarchical microstructure with a core-shell structure and modulation of the electronic environment through cerium doping is believed to be responsible for the improved electrocatalytic efficiency. In addition, overall water splitting demanded a low cell voltage of 1.57 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This research outlines a feasible framework for an efficient material for global clean energy applications.
