An incompletely covered CdS/ZnS core/shell is synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. Due to the defect energy levels introduced by zinc vacancies, the typical type-I heterojunction of CdS/ZnS evolves to a type-II heterojunction and Z-scheme hybrid structure so that the ZnS shell can timely transfer and capture the photogenerated holes from the CdS core. The surface photovoltage (SPV) distribution caused by photogenerated charges on the surface of catalyst is visually presented by Kelvin probe force microscopy with synchronous illumination (microscope SPV). It intuitively proves the effective spatial separation of photogenerated holes from the CdS core to the ZnS shell, for the first time. Under optimal conditions, the highest hydrogen production rate of CdS/ZnS reached 24.1 mmol g–1 h–1 under visible light illumination. The average apparent quantum yield of 9.3% can be achieved for 9 h of illumination (λ = 420 ± 5 nm). It exhibits highly efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution with well stability.

A functional ratio fluorescence sensor based on the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coated double quantum dots (QDs) being composited of Mn-ZnS QDs and silica-coated graphene quantum dots (GQDs@SiO 2 ) had been established for the sensitive, selective and visual detection of sinapic acid (SA). MIPs@Mn-ZnS/GQDs@SiO 2 was synthesized through a simple one-pot sol-gel reaction, and it exhibited two fluorescence emission peaks with yellow fluorescence of Mn-ZnS QDs at 580 nm and the blue fluorescence of GQDs at 445 nm. SA can selectively enhance the fluorescence of GQDs but quench the Mn-ZnS QDs fluorescence to the MIPs@Mn-ZnS/GQDs@SiO 2 . The ratio of fluorescence enhancement to fluorescence reduction is linear with the concentration of SA from 9 to 81 nM with the detection limits of 0.8388 nM (S/N = 3). And the constructed fluorescent probe can also be used to visually detect SA according to the change of color. More importantly, molecular imprinting technique enables the sensors to selectively recognize the SA while other similar structure molecules hardly interfere with the SA determination in the measurement environment. Meanwhile, the fluorescence sensors have the advantages of fast response time and long duration of fluorescence intensity . These excellent performances made the proposed method to be applied for the determination of SA in Semen Sinapis and Descurainiae Semen .

A visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor has been developed for the “signal-on” analysis of Hg 2+ by the synergetic combination of low-bandgap Ag 2 S and wide-bandgap ZnS quantum dots (QDs). Ag 2 S QDs were synthesized with bead-chain-like structure by the self-assembly route and further covalently bound with ZnS QDs to be coated onto the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. It was discovered that the ZnS@Ag 2 S-modified electrodes could display the visible-light-driven PEC behavior, of which Ag 2 S and ZnS QDs could act as the PEC sensitizer and Hg 2+ -recognition probe, respectively. More importantly, the photocurrent responses of the developed electrodes could be specifically turned on in the presence of Hg 2+ under the visible-light irradiation, presumably due to that Hg 2+ might conduct a Zn-to-Hg exchange on ZnS QDs to trigger the formation of HgS/ZnS@Ag 2 S heterojunction towards the enhanced electron-hole separation. The as-prepared PEC sensor could facilitate the detection of Hg 2+ with concentrations ranging from 0.010–1000 nM, with a detection limit of about 1.0 pM. Besides, the feasibility of practical applications of the developed PEC analysis strategy was verified by probing Hg 2+ in environmental water samples. Such a visible-light-driven PEC detection platform with the unique “turn-on” signal output may promise for the extensive applications for Hg 2+ evaluation.

The nanostructured hybrid assembly has gained growing interest due to their unique electronic, optical and catalytic properties . Herein, a novel ratiometric fluorescent sensor was constructed by coupling blue-green emission carbon dots (CDs) to a block copolymer micelle-encapsulated red-emission CdSe/ZnS QDs through host-guest interaction. The carbon dots (CDs) were prepared by carbonization of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) via a simple hydrothermal process. The amphiphilic diblock copolymer AZO-PNIPAM-b-P(St-co-MQ) containing azobenzene (AZO)-terminated hydrophilic poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) block and hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) block was synthesized by a typical RAFT polymerization . The 5-(2-methacryloylethyloxymethyl)-8- quinolinol (MQ) units were introduced into PS block, which could make CdSe/ZnS QDs to be embedded into the core of the block polymer micelles via coordination interaction in the self-assembling process. The as-fabricated β-cyclodextrin derived CDs-coupled block copolymer hybrid micelles loaded with CdSe/ZnS QDs as a fluorescence sensor exhibited dual emission peaks of CDs centered at 450 nm and CdSe/ZnS QDs at 620 nm with a large peak separation of 170 nm upon excitation at 360 nm. And the as-prepared hybrid micelles as a ratiometric fluorescence sensor can be applied to detect Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ with the detection limits down to 1.6 and 2.74 μM, respectively.

Herein, a core-shell structured Co 3 S 4 /NC@ZnS/NC heterojunction has been constructed via elaborately synthesizing metal-organic framework (MOF)-on-MOF precursors (ZIF-67@ZIF-8) and following controlled carbonization-sulfidation processes. The developed Co 3 S 4 /NC@ZnS/NC achieves higher performances for CO 2 photoreduction with water vapor towards CO (28.44 μmol g −1 h −1 ), CH 4 (1.93 μmol g −1 h −1 ) and C 2 H 4 (12.23 μmol g −1 h −1 ) in a continuous-flow condition under visible-light irradiation, which are significantly superior than those of Co 3 S 4 /NC and ZnS/NC. 13 CO 2 isotope tracer analysis verifies that CO, CH 4 and C 2 H 4 originate from the carbon source of CO 2 . Experiments and DFT calculations confirm that constructing an electron transport layer (ZnS/NC) in Co 3 S 4 /NC@ZnS/NC can contribute to a feasible channel for the enhanced separation and transfer of charge carriers. In heterojunction , non-bonding Co and Zn atomic pairs as adsorption sites synergistically participate in the CO 2 activation through the unique electron transport channel and acquire the lower energy barriers of COOH* formation. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS reveals the key intermediates and possible conversion pathways to main products. This work presents an attractive strategy to construct dual MOFs-derived metal sulfide heterojunctions for high-performance CO 2 conversion.

In this study, we present a novel synthesis system for AgInS 2 /ZnS (AIS/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) terminated with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) as a ligand, which has not been previously documented. By varying the Ag/In ratio, we achieved emission wavelengths ranging from 590 to 697 nm, with the maximum photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 33.1 %. The synthesized AIS/ZnS QDs powder was mixed with YAG phosphor and combined with a blue gallium nitride (GaN) chip to produce a warm white light-emitting diode (WLED), resulting in the color rendering index (CRI) increase from 74 to 82 and the correlated color temperature (CCT) decrease from 6486 K to 3873 K. Additionally, the AIS/ZnS QDs powder can be directly utilized with a blue GaN chip to create a near-infrared light-emitting diode (NIR-LED) capable of night vision. By adjusting the concentration of CMC in the AIS/ZnS QDs solution, the material can be directly used for writing and screen printing, or dried to obtain a highly transparent and luminescent flexible composite film. This research demonstrates the significant potential of CMC-ligated AIS/ZnS core/shell QDs in display technologies and flexible device applications.

Nitrite plays a critical role in a variety of nitrification and denitrification processes in the nitrogen cycle. Due to the high surface energy, tendency to aggregate, and poor conductivity, current nitrite ZnS-based sensing platform could not meet the need of on-site nitrite detection in smart agriculture. In order to address these issues, the carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT) was introduced to reduce the surface energy and prevented aggregation of ZnS, while ZnS-carboxylated CNT (ZnS-CNT) composite also provided excellent electrochemical conductivity. Furthermore, the introduction of phase transition BSA (PTB) created a three-dimensional porous conductive matrix without interfering with the mass transfer process of nitrite. The resulting sensing platform exhibited a linear detection range of 10 nM to 0.4 mM for nitrite, with a detection limit of 0.73 nM. And this sensing platform had the excellent antifouling ability to direct detection nitrite in real soil suspension. In addition, the sensing platform demonstrated remarkable resistance to interferences from pH variations, microbial presence, and organic pollutants that usually present in soil environment. Therefore, on-site detection of nitrite ions in soil environment was realized no needing complex pretreatments.

The simultaneous detection of multiple biological small molecules is critical for human health evaluation and disease prevention. In this study, a nano-ZnS decorated hierarchically porous carbon (ZSHPC) electrocatalyst with multiple enzyme-like activities as a nanozyme sensing platform for simultaneous derivative voltametric detection of four important biological small molecules, dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), guanine (G), and adenine (A), is successfully synthesized via an in situ hydrothermal reaction using leaves of Cinnamomum camphora (L.) after the extraction of essential oil as a carbon source, ZnCl2 as both zinc source and an activator, sulfuric acid as a sulfur source, and silica gel as a hard template. Activator together with the introduction of silica gel is beneficial for tuning pore structure. The in situ synthesized ZnS nanoparticles and sulfur doping improve the conductivity and cycling stability of the material. The ZSHPC electrode with multiple enzyme-like activities and oxidase-like characteristics was employed for the simultaneous detection of multiple target molecules in linear ranges of 0.3–500 μM with detection limits of 0.12 μM for DA, 0.26 μM for UA, 0.07 μM for G, and 0.075 μM for A. A derivative technique was selected for enhancing the peak resolution of the partial overlapped voltammograms and eliminating human error. Both the coefficient of determination and residual prediction deviation were used to evaluate this technique.

The microRNA family shows great promise for the diagnosis and prediction of different cancers as biomarkers, in which miRNA-155 (miR155) is recognized as a biomarker for lung cancer and thus has drawn much attention. Therefore, the development of specific and accurate methods to detect miR155 has become a potential research hotspot. In this work, we presented a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) technique by utilizing core–shell CdSeTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as a signal reporter and a target recycling strategy as a signal amplifier for the detection of miR155. In the presence of miR155, part of the hairpin probe (HP) immobilized onto the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)@SiO2, could hybridize with it. Then, numerous H1-AuNPs@SiO2 could be produced with the aid of exonuclease III. With the linkage of the assistant chain A2, H1-AuNPs@SiO2 combined with A1-QDs and then the fluorescence (FL) signal of QDs was quenched by AuNPs@SiO2via FRET. The more miR155 present in solution, the weaker the detected FL signal. A linear response range of 0.01 fM to 1 nM and low detection limit of 3 aM were obtained using the proposed method. Furthermore, this method showed high specificity and satisfactory recovery between 93 and 105% in real human serum samples, illustrating its great potential for practical applications.

We proposed a facile approach for the synthesis of zinc sulfur-coated poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-reduced graphene oxide hybrids film (ZnS-PEDOT-rGO) by using thioacetamide (TAA) as the reducing agent. The ZnS-PEDOT-rGO hybrids film modified glassy carbon-rotating disk electrode (GC-RDE) was then developed for the sensitive simultaneous determination of three deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) bases: guanine (G), adenine (A), and thymine (T). By cyclic voltammetry (CV), this electrochemical sensor showed a good photoelectronic effect, and the peak currents of G, A, and T increased obviously. Some kinetic parameters were estimated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). Under the optimal conditions, the magnified anodic peak currents represented the excellent analytical performance of simultaneous detection of G, A, and T in a wide linear range and low detection limit. This proposed method also has been successfully applied to the assessment of G, A, and T contents in real-life samples, such as herring sperm DNA samples, milk powder and urine sample from human beings, with satisfactory results. The obtained results were also compared to HPLC of analysis for those three DNA bases and no significant differences were found. By the treatment of the experimental data, the electrochemical reaction mechanisms of G, A, and T all involved a two-electron-two-proton-transfer process.

A micro/nano hierarchical flower-like ZnS/FeS2 direct Z-scheme heterojunction visible-light catalyst was in situ derived from a Prussian blue analogue cube (Zn–Fe PBA) using a facile one-pot hydrothermal sulfidation strategy. The as-prepared ZnS/FeS2 catalyst shows extraordinarily boosted visible-light photocatalytic degradability for Rhodamine B (RhB) with the synergism of peroxydisulfate (PDS). Under visible-light illumination, 98.5% degradation efficiency can be achieved within 15 min and 100% within 20 min with excellent structural stability of ZnS/FeS2. The degradation kinetic constant of ZnS/FeS2 + PDS is 9.33 times that of ZnS/FeS2, 23.02 times that of p-ZnS/FeS2, 24.05 times that of FeS2, and 28.25 times that of ZnS, respectively. The ZnS/FeS2 heterojunction shows significant synergistic benefits in the photocatalytic degradation reaction. More advantageously, ZnS/FeS2 + PDS shows excellent photocatalytic degradation performance in a wide pH range (1–10). A reasonable direct Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism for visible-light responsive photocatalytic degradation of RhB with ˙OH, h+, ˙O2−, and ˙SO4− as the crucial active species is recommended for the ZnS/FeS2 + PDS composite system. The micro/nano hierarchical flower-like structure of ZnS/FeS2 simultaneously combines the high activity of nano-materials with the advantages of easy recycling of micro-sized materials. The in situ transformation characteristics of ZnS/FeS2 from the PBA template contribute to the advantageous high performance and structural stability.
