Magnetic quaternary chitosan salt CS/EPTAC/Fe 3 O 4 was used for the removal of acid red 1 (AR1), xylenol orange (XO) and alizarin red (AR) in single, binary and ternary systems. In the single system, the maximal adsorption capacity was 781.55 for AR1, 537.40 for XO and 992.61 mg g −1 for AR at pH 3.0 and 25 °C. The adsorption kinetics of the three dyes followed the pseudo-second-order model. In the multicomponent system, preferential adsorption was observed for AR at low adsorbent quantities due to the small size of the molecule. When the adsorbent amount was greater, AR1 was adsorbed first because of the greater number of sulfonic acid roots. In the entire adsorption process, XO always adsorbed most slowly.

Mechanical damage and microbial contamination are major challenges in the postharvest logistics of perishable fruit. In this study, two types of functionally modified chitosan-based aerogel pads were developed to enhance cushioning and preservation of wax apples. A chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CP) aerogel was first optimized by adjusting solid content, CS:PVA ratio, and crosslinker concentration. The optimal formulation (2% solids, 1:1 CS: PVA, 3% glutaraldehyde) exhibited a uniform porous structure and improved compressive strength. A chitosan/montmorillonite (CM) aerogel with 5% montmorillonite (MMT) showed high porosity, low density, and excellent cyclic stability. Incorporating 10% copper nanoparticle-loaded antibacterial fibers (CuNPs-TNF) into CM aerogels yielded CM-Cu aerogels with enhanced cushioning and antimicrobial properties. Under simulated transport and cold storage conditions, all aerogel-packaged groups reduced mechanical damage and decay of wax apples. Compared to the control, the CM-Cu group showed 66% lower decay, 5% less weight loss, 6 N greater firmness, 7% less juice yield, and a 13% reduction in relative electrical conductivity. Additionally, it better preserved fruit color and total soluble solids, extending shelf life by 4 d at 20 °C. These results demonstrate the potential of chitosan-based aerogels as multifunctional packaging materials that combine mechanical protection with antimicrobial activity for perishable fruit preservation.

The water solubility and polymerizability of maleoyl chitosan (MCS) was significantly improved by introducing a maleoyl group into the chitosan chain and MCS is a promising monomer for preparing chitosan-based flocculants with good water solubility. In this study, MCS was grafted with acrylamide and diallyldimethylammonium chloride to prepared a cationic chitosan modified flocculant chitosan-graft-poly (acrylamide diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PMAD) with excellent solubility by ultraviolet (UV)-induced copolymerization techniques. The effects of monomer concentration, the percentage of maleated chitosan, photoinitiator concentration and illumination time on the intrinsic viscosity, grafting efficiency and dissolution time of PMAD were investigated by single factor experiments. The optimal synthesis conditions were determined with monomer concentration 12.5%, MCS percentage 10%, cationicity 11.25%, photoinitiator concentration 0.3% and illumination time 120 min, proving that UV initiated method was benefited to improve water solubility of PMAD. PMAD prepared at the optimized condition has the optimal viscosity of 4,823.2 mg L –1 , the grafting efficiency of 70.7% and the dissolution time of 75 min. At the same time, the synthesized products PMAD were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, H-nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric and X-ray diffraction techniques. The flocculation experiments of PMAD on algae-containing water showed that the flocculation performance of PMAD was remarkably higher than that of commercially available polyacrylamide and polyaluminum ferric chloride. The optimal removal rate of Chl a (81.2%), turbidity (94.9%), and algae cell concentration (99.7%) by PMAD was obtained at dosage of 40 mg L –1 , pH value 8 and G value 500 s –1 . The obtained zeta potential results proved that the main flocculation mechanism of PMAD was the function of adsorption bridging.

The repair of jawbone defects faces critical challenges, such as the mechanical-bioactivity imbalance and limited bioactivity of traditional scaffold materials. This study proposes a “mechanical reinforcement–bio-mineralization” synergistic strategy to construct a chitin nanowhiskers (CHWs)/octacalcium phosphate (OCP) co-modified chitosan (CS) composite hydrogel (CS/CHWs-OCP) and systematically investigates its bone regeneration efficacy. Results demonstrate the successful fabrication of CS/CHWs-OCP hydrogels with gradient OCP loading (3%–12% wt). The hydrogels exhibit three-dimensional interconnected porous structures, favorable swelling properties, and effective protein loading/sustained-release capabilities. In vitro experiments reveal that CS/CHWs-OCPs significantly promote osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and angiogenic differentiation of EA.hy926 cells, with the 12 wt% OCP group showing the highest alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. Micro-CT 3D reconstruction and histological analysis demonstrate that the 12 wt% OCP group exhibits optimal calvarial defect repair capacity, with its new bone volume fraction (BV/TV: 57.2 ± 10.2%) at 8 weeks being significantly superior to both the blank control and OCP-free hydrogel groups. In conclusion, the developed CS/CHWs-OCP hydrogel provides an effective solution for bone defect regeneration.

Liposomes, as effective drug delivery systems, face limitations in their low efficiency of traditional preparation methods and inherent physical instability. In this study, we systematically compared two strategies based on Flash Nanoprecipitation (FNP) technology for the rapid and controllable preparation of chitosan hybrid liposomes. We hypothesize that the “one-step” FNP method, which mixed chitosan and lipid solutions simultaneously, potentially enabled direct co-assembly between chitosan and lipid molecules, so that chitosan molecules likely embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, resulting in liposomes with more uniform structure and smaller particle size (∼70 nm). Meanwhile, the “two-step” FNP method, which mixed chitosan with preformed liposomes, likely yielded a core-shell structure through chitosan adsorption onto the liposome surface. The one-step FNP prepared particles exhibit excellent long-term storage stability and resistance to pH and ionic strength variations, likely due to the steric effect provided by the embedded polymer chains. To investigate the drug loading capability of FNP prepared chitosan-liposomes, we encapsulated an antifungal drug, fluconazole, into these hybrid nanoparticles. Compared to the free drug, the drug-loaded liposomes not only achieved sustained release, but also reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration against Candida albicans by an order of magnitude. This study demonstrates that FNP technology, particularly the one-step strategy, provides a robust platform for constructing polymer hybrid liposomes, showing potential for enhancing the delivery and functionality of poorly soluble drugs.

Angiogenesis is a fundamental prerequisite for functional tissue regeneration, and biomaterials that drive endogenous vascularization hold immense translational potential for treating tissue defects, organ damage, and ischemic diseases. Herein, gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and chitosan methacryloyl (CSMA) were synthesized via a copolymerization-based modification method. Hydrogel microspheres were prepared by emulsification, followed by cross-linking through photoinitiator-induced radical polymerization under UV light. Combined with freeze-drying, size-tunable porous GelMA/CSMA composite microspheres (G/CMS) were fabricated. The as-prepared G/CMS establish a favorable pro-regenerative microenvironment by integrating size-dependent mechanical feedback and charge-mediated cellular interactions. Specifically, CSMA incorporation imparted a positive surface charge, enhancing cellular affinity, while smaller diameters amplified mechanical stimuli promoting adhesion via mechanotransduction. In vitro, the optimized formulation (G/CMS-B) significantly promoted the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and upregulated key angiogenic genes (VEGF, ANG, KDR) without exogenous growth factors. In vivo, subcutaneous implantation and hindlimb ischemia models confirmed accelerated neovascularization and blood flow recovery. The developed G/CMS exhibited excellent biocompatibility, controllable degradability, injectability, and excellent elastic recovery. This synergistic platform effectively modulates physicochemical cues to promote vascularization, offering a promising, cost-effective strategy for regenerative medicine.

Background/Objective Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive lung disease with a high mortality rate. Currently, the treatment options for IPF involve the oral administration of nintedanib (NDNB); however, these therapies are hampered by low oral bioavailability. This study aimed to develop chitosan-based nanoparticles for pulmonary delivery to enhance the therapeutic effects of curcumin (Cur) and NDNB.Methods We successfully prepared and optimized Cur-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (Cur/CS-VES NPs) and NDNB-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (NDNB/CS-PGA NPs) through a standardized process. In vitro, Calu-3 and HFL1 cells were treated to evaluate the biocompatibility of chitosan nanocarrier materials and the antifibrotic activity of drug-loaded nanoparticles, respectively. In vivo, the bleomycin-induced rat models of pulmonary fibrosis were established to study the efficacy of chitosan nanoparticles. Results In vitro experiments indicated that the drug-loaded chitosan nanoparticles exhibited good stability and low cytotoxicity. In vivo pharmacodynamic studies revealed that, compared with oral administration of Cur or NDNB alone, the pulmonary delivery of Cur/CS-VES NPs and NDNB/CS-PGA NPs effectively inhibited the progression of pulmonary fibrosis, improved lung function, reduced levels of inflammatory factors, and mitigated pathological lesions in the lungs. These findings suggest that chitosan-based nano-particles have promising potential as pulmonary inhalation agents for the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis. Conclusion These findings highlight the great potential of chitosan-based nanoparticles as a therapeutic strategy for treating IPF and related pulmonary fibrosis with pulmonary delivery pathways.

In this study, a novel chitosan carbon dot/quercetin (CS-CDs/Que) composite nanosystem was constructed. Utilizing the abundant carbon, nitrogen, hydroxyl, and amino functional groups in the molecular structure of chitosan, carbonization, molecular polycondensation, and surface passivation were achieved through a hydrothermal method, ultimately forming chitosan carbon quantum dot carriers (CS-CDs) with an average size of 6.27 nm. Quercetin (Que) was then loaded onto these carriers to construct the composite nanosystem. Structural characterization of the composite nanosystem was conducted using techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, confirming the successful hybridization of the nanocomposites. Notably, compared with Que alone, the CS-CDs/Que composite nanosystem exhibit significantly enhanced antioxidant capacity under the same mass concentration. The scavenging rates of CS-CDs/Que for DPPH and ABTS can reach 92% and 62%, respectively; their chelating ability for ferrous ions is also much stronger than that of Que. Furthermore, CS-CDs/Que can effectively scavenge superoxide anion free radicals and hydroxyl free radicals. When the concentration of CS-CDs/Que is 15 µg mL −1 , it achieved a 100% scavenging rate for hydroxyl radicals. Overall, the prepared CS-CDs/Que composite nanosystem show excellent antioxidant activity, providing new insights for the development of novel antioxidants.

Ultrasound-induced synthesis of chitosan-modified nano-scale graphene oxide (CS-NGO) hybrid nanosheets, which has great potential pharmaceutical applications, in supercritical CO 2 without catalyst was presented for the first time. The preparation process does not require organic solvent and post-processing, and CO 2 easily escapes from the product. The morphology and structure of the CS-NGO, characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, confirms that it was combined via the amide linkage, and had excellent dispersibility and stability toward acidic and physiological aqueous solution, which implies that it could be used as a drug-carrier. The sonication power played a crucial role in inducing forming amidation, and the conversion rate increased with the sonication time. The mechanism of this reaction was explained.

A bio-inspired nanocarrier was developed for protein delivery based on biodegradable amphiphilic chitosan derivative (DCA–PCCs) with hydrophilic cell membrane mimic phosphorylcholine (PC) and hydrophobic deoxycholic acid (DCA) moieties, which was synthesized via the combination of Atherton–Todd reaction and carbodiimide coupling reaction. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as model protein, it was found that DCA–PCCs with suitable degree of substitution of PC and DCA moieties can load proteins by forming nanocomplexes via a solvent evaporation method. The physicochemical characteristics of BSA/DCA–PCCs nanocomplexes were investigated by Zetasizer, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In vitro biological evaluation revealed BSA/DCA–PCCs nanocomplexes as blank DCA–PCCs nanoparticles had excellent cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility mainly due to the presence of cell membrane mimic phosphorylcholine. BSA release results suggested BSA/DCA–PCCs nanocomplexes showed a sustained release behavior following first order exponential decay kinetics. The results indicated DCA–PCCs provided a promising approach for effectively delivering therapeutic proteins.

A major obstacle for the development of the cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane is its fouling. In this study, a novel cellulose-based composite nanofiltration membrane (CS/DA-TiO 2 -NFM) with excellent anti-fouling performance was prepared through casting of both chitosan (CS) and TiO 2 modified by dopamine (DA-TiO 2 ) on the cellulose substrate membrane. DA-TiO 2 was successfully introduced into the surface of membrane, resulting in significant improvement in its hydrophilicity due to the formation of dense CS layers. Furthermore, both CS and DA-TiO 2 were effective antimicrobial agents (against E. coli 90.6% and S. aureus 95.1%) that could minimize the accumulation of bacteria on the CS/DA-TiO 2 -NFM. For the antifouling test against BSA, the irreversible recovery ratio of the CS/DA-TiO 2 -NFM was only 23.25% of the control (no CS/DA-TiO 2 modified NFM). In addition, the CS/DA-TiO 2 -NFM exhibited an increased rejection rate of MgSO 4 (enhanced 40.93%) and water-flux (enhanced 18.10%) compared with the control. These results highlight the potential of the presented approach for designing membranes with effective separation performance and antifouling for drinking water treatment. Graphic abstract

Flexible and wearable pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention for the wide application prospect in robot sensing, intelligent electronic skin and healthcare monitoring. Herein, a superhydrophobic MXene-coated carboxylated carbon nanotubes (C-CNTs)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) aerogel with honeycomb-like porous microstructure was proposed for piezoresistive pressure sensor. Firstly, a C-CNTs/CCS aerogel with superior robustness, resilience and durability was fabricated via directional freeze-drying method. Secondly, the C-CNTs/CCS aerogel was dip-coated with a layer of MXene nanosheets and then chemically modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FAS). The obtained F-MXene@C-CNTs/CCS aerogel demonstrated superhydrophobicity and the water contact angle and artificial sweat contact angle reached 157° and 154°, respectively. Thanks to the synergism of the dual-conductive MXene-CNTs network, the aerogel-based pressure sensor realized fast response time (62 ms), wide detection range (up to 80 kPa) as well as excellent electrical stability and repeatability even under humid and sweaty environments. Additionally, the sensor was successfully applied for monitoring human motions including not only large-scale actions (joint movements, walking and running) but also small-scale muscle movements (pronunciation recognition and finger tapping). Interestingly, the sensor connected to an Arduino microcontroller circuit with Bluetooth module was able to wirelessly detect real-time movements of finger joints. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new strategy to fabricate high-performance piezoresistive pressure sensors for wide applications even at special working conditions.
