High capacity, long cycle life, and fast kinetics are highly desired for alloying anodes in sodium ion capacitors (SICs). However, the huge repeatedly volume changes during the alloying/dealloying process cause electrode pulverization , seriously degrading the capacity and cycling stability. To address this issue, we developed a microwave irradiation technology for the in-situ growth of nano-sized Bi uniformly anchored on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The as-synthesized freestanding electrode film effectively retards the pulverization of Bi nanoparticles , enabling fast sodium storage kinetics for high-power performance (278.1 mAh g −1 @ 30 A g −1 ), as well as high-capacity retention of 94% for over 3,500 cycles. The coin-cell type SICs of a Bi/CNTs anode paired with an activated carbon (AC)/CNTs cathode can deliver a maximum energy density of 128.5 Wh kg −1 and a high power density of 12.3 kW kg −1 with a remaining energy density of 85 Wh kg −1 . Additionally, the flexible quasi-solid SICs using a gel electrolyte demonstrated a high volumetric energy density of 21 mWh cm −3 with good cycling stability (90%) for over 1500 cycles. These results show great promise for our developed SICs as the next-generation energy storage to bridge the performance gap between batteries and supercapacitors , as well as for flexible energy storage applications.

Surface strain tuning in a coupled heterostructure efficiently engineers the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts by altering the electronic structures and boosting electron transport. Generally, Bi-based catalysts are more favorable than ZnO for CO 2 electroreduction to formate, but Bi is much more costly than Zn. Herein, a new Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO heterojunction catalyst with porous nanoplate morphology is synthesized through a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide-templated hydrothermal reaction for a highly efficient catalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to produce formate. The Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO catalyst shows a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 92% for formate production at −1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a large partial current density of −200 mA mg Bi
−1 at −1.2 V vs. RHE. More importantly, the mass activity of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO normalized by Bi mass is an approximately 3.1-fold enhancement over that of the pristine Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 at −1.2 V vs. RHE. By coupling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and adsorption spectroscopy measurements, the charge transfer from the Zn atom to the Bi atom through a heterogeneous interface results in an electron-enriched Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 surface, which facilitates CO 2 capture and activation. Meanwhile, compressive stress produced on the catalyst surface helps optimize the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediate, synergistically enhancing the catalytic selectivity and activity of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO for electrochemical CO 2 reduction to formate.

Outdoor equipment can suffer from functional failure in winter due to ice accumulation. Although functional materials are widely recognized as promising candidates for anti-icing and de-icing applications, ice inevitably accretes on surfaces at extremely low temperatures and high humidity. If surfaces display reversible superhydrophobic and slippery performance, similar to Lotus leaves and fish skin, it will significantly improve the anti-icing and de-icing performance. This study proposes a novel type of multifunctional coating that could smartly reverse between superhydrophobic and slippery properties on demand. The superhydrophobic coatings with diverse morphologies were obtained by employing different sizes and shapes of nanoparticles . Due to the low adhesion and photothermal properties, the superhydrophobic samples presented good freezing rain prevention and snow-melting performances by outdoor tests in winter. The samples with slippery surfaces were produced by infusing dodecane on the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface. Both the superhydrophobic and slippery surfaces can effectively propel the water droplets, prolong the freezing time and enhance ice removal performance in an extremely cold environment. Therefore, the coated samples with bi-stable states (i.e., superhydrophobic and slippery states) were successfully achieved with the potential to be widely applied under different service environments. This facile strategy will provide the possibility for developing novel materials with smart reversible wettability for anti-icing and de-icing applications.

Photocatalysis is an effective technology for NO removal even at low concentrations in the ambient atmosphere. However, the low efficiency of this advanced process and the tendency of producing toxic byproducts hinder the practical application of photocatalysis. To overcome these problems, the Bi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15photocatalytic composites were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized photocatalysts exhibited an efficient photocatalytic performance and generated low amounts of toxic byproducts. X-ray diffraction studies show that Bi3+is successfully reduced on the surface of Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15(BT/BBT). After L-Ascorbic acid (AA) modification, the photocatalytic NO removal efficiency of Bi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15is increased from 25.55% to 67.88%, while the production of the toxic byproductNO2is reduced by 92.02%, where the initial concentration of NO is diluted to ca. 800 ppb by the gas stream and the flow rate is controlled at 301.98 mL·min−1in a 150 mL cylindrical reactor. Furthermore, ambient humidity has little effect on the photocatalytic performance of theBi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15, and the photocatalyst exhibits excellent reusability after repeated cleaning with deionized water. The improved photocatalytic effect is attributed to the addition of AA in BT/BBT being able to reduce Bi3+ions to form Bi nanoparticles giving surface plasmon effect (SPR) and generate oxygen vacancies (OVs) at the same time, thereby improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, enhancing the light absorption, and increasing the specific surface areas. The present work could provide new insights into the design of high-performance photocatalysts and their potential applications in air purification, especially for NO removal.Keywords:photocatalysis;BaBi4Ti4O15;surface plasmon effect;NO removal

A phosphorous-based bi-functional compound HPDAl was used as a reactive-type flame retardant (FR) in an epoxy thermoset (EP) aiming to improve the flame retardant efficiency of phosphorus-based compounds. HPDAl, consisting of two different P-groups of aluminum phosphinate (AHP) and phosphophenanthrene (DOPO) with different phosphorous chemical environments and thus exerting different FR actions, exhibited an intramolecular P-P groups synergy and possessed superior flame-retardant efficiency compared with DOPO or AHP alone or the physical combination of DOPO/AHP in EP. Adding 2 wt.% HPDAl made EP composites acquire a LOI value of 32.3%, pass a UL94 V-0 rating with a blowing-out effect, and exhibit a decrease in the heat/smoke release. The flame retardant modes of action of HPDAl were confirmed by the experiments of the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetry–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy–gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (TG-FTIR-GC/MS). The results indicate that the phosphorous-based FRs show different influences on the flame retardancy of composites, mainly depending on their chemical structures. HPDAl had a flame inhibition effect in the gas phase and a charring effect in the condensed phase, with a well-balanced distribution of P content in the gas/condensed phase. Furthermore, the addition of HPDAl hardly impaired the mechanical properties of the matrix due to the link by chemical bonds between them. Keywords:flame retardant;intramolecular P-P synergy;aluminum phosphinate;phosphophenanthrene;epoxy resin

In the oral microenvironment, bacteria colonies are easily aggregated on the tooth-restoration surface, in the manner of a biofilm, which usually consists of heterogeneous structures containing clusters of a variety of bacteria embedded in an extracellular matrix, leading to serious recurrent caries. In this contribution, zero-dimensional (0D) bismuth (Bi) quantum dots (QDs) synthesized by a facile solvothermal method were directly employed to fabricate a Bi QD/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-modified tooth by simple curing treatment. The result demonstrates that the as-fabricated Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth at 37 °C for 120 min not only showed significantly improved hydrophobic performance with a water contact angle of 103° and 115° on the tooth root and tooth crown, respectively, compared to that (~20° on the tooth root, and ~5° on the tooth crown) of the pristine tooth, but also exhibited excellent antibacterial activity againstS. mutans, superior biocompatibility, and biosafety. In addition, due to the highly photothermal effect of Bi QDs, the antibacterial activity of the as-fabricated Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth could be further enhanced under illumination, even at a very low power density (12 mW cm−2). Due to the facile fabrication, excellent hydrophobicity, superior antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility and biosafety of the Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth, it is envisioned that the Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth with a fascinating self-cleaning and antibacterial performance can pave the way to new designs of versatile multifunctional nanocomposites to prevent secondary caries in the application of dental restoration. Keywords:bismuth;quantum dots;nanocomposite;self-cleaning;antibacterial

Developing full-spectrum responsive and efficient photocatalysts is still an important challenge in the field of photocatalytic treatment of trace environmental pollutants. Herein, full-spectrum Bi@Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 with rich-oxygen vacancies (OVs) were fabricated via a one-pot hydrothermal method. The optimized composite photocatalyst exhibited a photocatalytic efficiency of 79 %, more than doubled higher than that of its counterpart, Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 (31.79 %), for removing ppb-level NO under visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the co-effect of Bi and OVs reveal by control experiments and theoretical calculations, which not only benefited the adsorption and photocatalytic activation of NO but broadened light absorption to near infrared region. Furthermore, the adsorption and photocatalytic conversion pathway of NO was explored by in situ DRIFTS, suggesting that NO + as intermediate species is crucial to improve the selectivity of NO converting to nitrate. This work provides a new perspective of constructing full-spectrum-driven photocatalysts for environment remediation.

A thin yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ)/gadolinia doped ceria (GDC) bi-layer membrane is fabricated through the slurry spin coating technique and used as an electrolyte of a solid oxide fuel cell with La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ as the cathode. The viscosity of the YSZ slurry is controlled by adding ethanol in the terpineol solvent, which shows a negligible effect on the thickness but a remarkable influence on the porosity of the YSZ film. The thickness of the YSZ layer increases with the YSZ content in the slurry. The YSZ films are pre-sintered at various temperatures, and the one sintered at 1200 °C has a moderate interaction with the GDC slurry, forming a 10 μm-thick YSZ/GDC bilayer with a low porosity and a low ohmic resistance. The corresponding single cell shows a maximum power density of 1480 mW cm−2 at 750 °C.

One of the important factors determining the expansion of the application domain of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is its energy density . The bismuth-nickel doped LTA zeolite was as-synthesized in hydrothermal condition and applied into the electrochemistry catalysis of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) with high performance in the methanol concentration ranging from 0.5 M to 35 M without observed catalyst poisoning . A trace amount of Bi and Ni atoms are highly dispersed on the opening window of the zeolitic surface by the electrochemical rearrangement process. The surface of the LTA structure zeolite is a good carrier for the metal cations with Na cations which could be replaced in hydrothermal crystalline process while the inner direct pores provide a channel for CO gas to escape and prevent catalyst poisoning in electrochemistry progress. Through the comparative study with the Bi doped LTA, Ni doped LTA and the commercial Pt/C catalyst, the Bi and Ni doped LTA reveals higher performance in monatomic catalytic efficiency and electrochemical stability. And through the mutual interaction of diatomic, the doped zeolite material highly improves the energy density of methanol fuel cells and reduces the cost of the cells concerning the absence of noble metals.

Piezoelectric field engineering has been recently proved to restrain the photogenerated carrier recombination both in the bulk and on the surface of photocatalyst. Herein, we proposed a bi-piezoelectric ZnO nanorods (NR)/PVDF-HFP spongy film that can utilize water flow vibration to boost the photocatalytic degradation of organic dye. The composite photocatalyst can be deformed by water flow to generate an integrated piezoelectric field from PVDF-HFP and ZnO NR , which can considerably drive the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers in ZnO NR. As a result, the ZnO NR/PVDF-HFP spongy film shows a ∼ 3 fold increase in reaction rate constant of degrading methyl orange (MO) with irradiation as flow speed increases from 200 rpm to 1000 rpm. A model about the bi-piezoelectric effect of ZnO NR/PVDF-HFP was configurated according to a series of characterization by piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) and photoluminescence (PL). This work demonstrates the contribution of the bi-piezoelectric effect to photocatalytic water decontamination and provides a promising strategy to use dual-sustainable energy— solar and water energy.

Methyl phenyl carbonate (MPC) is one of the versatile carbonates; in particular, it is an important component in lithium-ion batteries. In recent years, the catalytic synthesis of MPC has become an important topic, but the development of highly active catalysts is still challenging. In this study, SBA-15-loaded nano-sized Pb–Bi catalysts with different Pb/Bi molar ratios were prepared by deposition–precipitation to improve the efficiency and selectivity. To investigate the relationship between the structure and performance of the catalysts, XRD , BET, SEM-EDS, HRTEM , H 2 -TPR, and XPS characterization, as well as catalytic activity and stability tests, were conducted. Results revealed that Pb–Bi/SBA-15 can efficiently catalyze the synthesis of MPC under solvent-free conditions, with the highest catalytic activity obtained over 6 Pb–1Bi/SBA-15. SBA-15 with a large pore size and a high specific surface area was suitable as catalyst carrier, and the average diameter of Pb–Bi oxide particles was ∼3.57 nm. The addition of Bi led to the improved dispersion of active components, which were highly and evenly dispersed on the SBA-15 surface. Furthermore, an appropriate proportion of Pb and Bi on SBA-15 was conducive to the considerable enhancement of the catalytic activity. Besides, Pb–Bi/SBA-15 also exhibited good durability and recyclability, making it a promising catalytic material for the synthesis of various carbonates.
