Synthesis and Investigation of the Flame Retardancy, Mechanism, and Comprehensive Properties of a Reactive Flame-Retardant UV-Curable Acrylate Monomer

Sheng Wang,Shang Gao,Gousheng Liu

A reactive flame-retardant acrylate monomer (PEDP) with a high phosphorus content has been synthesized through a straightforward process to improve the fire safety of UV-curable materials. In comparison to the traditional monomer PETA, the UV-cured PEDP (UV-PEDP) enhances the limiting oxygen index (LOI) from 28.7% to 31.9% and achieves a UL-94 V0 rating without any melt dripping. Meanwhile, UV-PEDP exhibits a 42.7% reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) and a 30.6% decrease in total heat release (THR) compared to UV-PETA in the cone calorimetry test (CCT). Mechanistic analysis attributes the improved flame retardancy to gas-phase quenching and dilution effects from phosphorus-containing decomposition products, as well as the formation of char in the condensed phase. The UV-PEDP demonstrates high transparency (exceeding 80% at 800 nm) and excellent hardness (above 93 Shore-D). Although there is a decrease of 27% in tensile strength and 30% in elongation, these trade-offs remain acceptable for many coating applications. This study presents an effective strategy to expand the safe use of UV-curable materials.

Green Ionic Polymer Additives for Multifunctional Integration in Water-Based Lubrication Systems: Lubricity, Anti-Corrosion and Viscosity-Enhancing Properties

Hailong Qiao,Yurong Wang,Qiang Chen,Pingxia Guo,Xiao Liu,Meirong Cai,Feng Guo

Environmentally benign water-based lubricants are attracting increasing attention as alternatives to conventional oil-based lubricants that may cause environmental pollution. Herein, three protic poly(ionic liquid)s (PPILs) are synthesized by combining a copolymeric cation with carboxylate anions of different alkyl chain lengths. The PPILs are employed as additives in aqueous lubricants, and their viscosity-enhancing capability and tribological performance are systematically evaluated. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), electrical contact resistance (ECR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) are used to elucidate the lubrication mechanism. The results demonstrate that PPILs significantly improve the viscosity, corrosion resistance, and tribological properties of water-based lubricants. Notably, the kinematic viscosity of a 6% PPD-Oa aqueous solution increases by two orders of magnitude compared with deionized water, while the corresponding wear volume and coefficient of friction are reduced by approximately 77% and 70%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations indicate that interfacial adsorption and friction-induced chemical processes jointly generate a protective layer at the sliding interface, thereby imparting excellent lubricity and load-bearing capability to the lubricant. Moreover, the three sulfur-free and halogen-free PPILs represent environmentally benign additives with strong potential for application in metalworking fluids and hydraulic systems.

Performance Evaluation of Peanut-Shaped Polystyrene Nanospheres as Profile-Control Agents

Xiaoqiong Hu,Peng Shi,Chuxiang Zhou,Gang Wu,Min Deng,Ting Chen,Shenwen Fang

Polymer microspheres are profile-control agents for plugging high-permeability reservoir zones, regulating injection profiles, and enhancing oil recovery (EOR) owing to their small size and strong retention. However, most studies focus on spherical microspheres, whereas peanut-shaped anisotropic particles remain rarely investigated. Herein, peanut-shaped polystyrene (P-PS) particles prepared through an optimized emulsion-polymerization route reported in our previous work were evaluated as anisotropic profile-control agents for EOR and compared with spherical PS particles (S1-PS and S2-PS). Core plugging tests showed that P-PS particles, with an apparent hydrodynamic diameter of 72 nm and an aspect ratio of 2.44, achieved a plugging efficiency of 85.72% in a 200 mD core, representing increases of 61.56% and 28.69% over S1-PS (160 nm) and S2-PS (65 nm), respectively. SEM confirmed that P-PS particles migrated into the porous medium and were retained within pore spaces. Under 70°C, 200 mD, 1.8 PV, and 1000 mg/L, P-PS produced an incremental EOR of 12.97%, 4.40, and 1.37 percentage points higher than those of S1-PS and S2-PS, respectively. At 5000 mg/L, EOR reached 18.70%, although injection pressure approached the limit. This study provides insight into anisotropic particle transport and retention in porous media and supports their profile-control potential.

Bio-Inspired Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes and Their Effect on the Anti-Fouling Properties of Polysulfone Ultrafiltration Membranes

Mengmeng Wang,Huixiao Ma,Ziyuan Zhu,Yutong Zhao,Fanxin Kong,Xiaocan Zhang

The inherent hydrophobicity of polysulfone (PSf) membranes frequently leads to membrane fouling issues. To address this limitation, a novel composite membrane was developed by incorporating hydrophilic tannic acid-modified carbon nanotubes (TCNT). The TCNT nanomaterial was synthesized by functionalizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs)─known for their exceptional organic compound adsorption capacity─with tannic acid (TA), which exhibits mussel-inspired adhesion properties for surface modification. The TCNT/PSf composite membranes were fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). Characterization results demonstrated that increasing TCNT content enhanced membrane porosity, enlarged finger-like pore structures, and improved surface hydrophilicity (reduced contact angle). The optimal membrane with 7 wt% TCNT loading achieved outstanding performance: 97% bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and 450 L m −2 h −1 pure water flux (50% higher than the pristine PSf membrane's 300 L m −2 h −1 ). Moreover, the total fouling ratio ( Rt ) significantly decreased from 84% to 53%, confirming the substantially improved antifouling properties of the TCNT-modified PSf membranes. The biomimetic functionalization strategy of TA-CNTs provides a new idea for the development of next-generation anti-pollution membrane materials, and its green modification method is in line with the concept of sustainable development.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Poly(l-Lactic Acid)/poly(l-Lactide-Co-ε-Caprolactone) Shape-Memory Composites Reinforced With Photothermal Hybrid Nanoparticles for 4D Printing

Haiyan Li,Kai Zhang,Shuai Zheng,Jing Ma,Long Zhao,Jialiang Wang,Lili Yin,Yulong Zou

Conventional poly( l -lactic acid) (PLLA) exhibits a relatively high switching temperature, limiting its on-demand actuation under mild biomedical conditions. Herein, poly( l -lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) was incorporated into PLLA to improve chain mobility and elasticity, and (MWCNTs–ZnO)@polydopamine nanoparticles (CZP) were introduced to construct a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive photothermal shape-memory system. The resulting PLLA/PLCL/CZP composites showed improved crystallinity, mechanical performance, and light-triggered actuation. At 1 wt% CZP, the film exhibited optimal tensile properties, with a tensile strength of 24.5 MPa and an elongation at break of 373%. Under 808 nm NIR irradiation, the composites rapidly recovered their original shape at approximately 55°C, enabling remote and mild-temperature actuation. Direct-ink-written 4D-printed scaffolds displayed high print fidelity and enhanced compressive properties, with 3 wt% CZP reaching a compressive strength of 5.2 MPa and a modulus of 0.6 MPa at 40% strain. The scaffolds showed shape-fixity ratios above 95% and recovery ratios above 80%. Biological evaluations revealed acceptable initial cell adhesion, concentration-dependent cytocompatibility, and antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . This work provides a tunable platform for NIR-triggered shape-memory actuation and programmable 4D-printed biomedical scaffolds.

Superhydrophobic, Abrasion-Resistant, Thermally Stable Cardanol-Based UV-Curable Coatings for Self-Cleaning, Oil–Water Separation, and Flame-Retardant/Smoke Suppression Applications

Yibo Zhang,Zhao Zhang,Yixiu Chen,Qing Zhong,Jiaxing Zhang,Hui Chang

Petroleum-based resins face limitations in superhydrophobic and flame-retardant applications, including high surface energy, poor durability under harsh conditions, low oxygen index, and high heat release. This study employs cardanol, which features a C 15 alkyl chain that confers low surface energy and char formation, along with a phenolic hydroxyl group suitable for graft copolymerization. Two rapidly UV-curable cardanol-based coatings were developed. M-PUA incorporates mesoporous SiO 2 and polydimethylsiloxane into cardanol-based polyurethane acrylate. At 3 wt% loading of mSiO 2 , it achieves water contact angle (WCA) > 151°, maintains WCA above 144° after 100 abrasion cycles, and exceeds 150° after 24 h immersion in pH = 1 or 13. The coating demonstrates efficient self-cleaning and oil/water separation, delivering over 98% separation efficiency across 20 cycles for six different oil/water mixtures, with a maximum flux of 2389.86 L m −2 h −1 . The B-PUA coating constructs a phosphorus-containing network by grafting di(2-(methacryloxy)ethyl) phosphate onto cardanol-Dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate. It achieves a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 28 and reduces total heat release by 67.2% and total smoke production by 52.2%. Both coatings exhibit low volatile organic compound emissions and rapid curing, providing an integrated and practical strategy for functionalizing cotton fabrics. These materials show strong potential for self-cleaning, oil/water separation, and flame-retardant applications.

PTC Behavior Based on Thermomechanical Properties in Graphene Nanosheets/Silicone Rubber Nanocomposites

Fanze Meng,Bi Wu,Xiaoguang Yang,Peng Wang,Haitao Ma,Deli Duan

Graphene nanosheets/silicone rubber (GNs/RTVSR) nanocomposites were fabricated to investigate the effect of thermomechanical–electrical coupling mechanism on their positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior. Heat treatment and graphene nanosheet size design were employed to tailor the thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the nanocomposites. Heat treatment removed organotin from the RTVSR matrix, as confirmed by XPS, FTIR, and in situ SEM, thereby enhancing the resistance stability of the nanocomposites. The slight variations in PTC behavior observed after treatment were associated with nanosheet size and transient temperature responses. Based on these results, the PTC mechanism governed by thermomechanical behavior and viscoelasticity was discussed. The steady-state PTC behavior of nanocomposites was described by a prediction model that combined thermomechanical and electrical conduction percolation. The PTC values of the nanocomposites with heat treatment and different GNs sizes could be predicted by this model. Meanwhile, DMA and other thermomechanical analyses revealed a strong correlation between time-dependent resistance attenuation and viscoelasticity of the nanocomposites. The PTC mechanism composed of steady model and transient analyses unmasked intensity differences and process deviation of resistance change rate. It explained the temperature self-limited heating behavior of nanocomposites.

Multiphase Structure and Interface Engineering of Polyurethane-Based Composites With Enhanced Acoustic Properties

Peng Sun,Chunhuan Guo,Tianmiao Yu,Fengchun Jiang,Yanchun Li,Xianghong Cui,Xiaodong Liu,Lei Wang,Shuguang Chen

In this work, polyurethane (PU)-based acoustic composites were systematically designed through multiscale structural and interfacial engineering to achieve broadband sound absorption and enhanced sound insulation. Dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) and antioxidant AO-80 were employed to regulate foaming kinetics and pore morphology, while multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydroxyl-functionalized MWCNTs were introduced as interfacial damping modifiers. Furthermore, 316 L stainless steel hollow spheres were incorporated to activate local mass–spring resonance effects. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that DBTDL promoted highly open-cell structures with high porosity, enabling efficient viscous damping and improved mid-frequency sound absorption. In contrast, AO-80 suppressed cell formation and induced dense, closed-cell morphologies, resulting in enhanced sound insulation but limited absorption capability. The incorporation of MWCNTs introduced interfacial viscoelastic damping, broadening the effective absorption bandwidth above 1500 Hz. Notably, hollow spheres significantly enhanced low-frequency acoustic performance through local resonance, while surface modification with hydroxylated MWCNTs further strengthened interfacial coupling and energy dissipation. As a result, the optimized composites exhibited simultaneously improved sound absorption and sound insulation over a wide frequency range. The coupled structure-dependent acoustic response—combining porous viscous loss, local mass–spring resonance, interfacial viscoelastic damping, and multiscale scattering—provides a scalable design strategy for lightweight, high-efficiency polymer-based acoustic materials.

Cellulose Acetate/Thermoplastic Polyurethane Porous Fibers: Fabrication and Thermal Insulation Optimization

Jinxiu Zhou,Haipei Ge,Fujuan Liu

Thermal insulation materials play a critical position in daily life and industrial processes, as they not only protect humans from cold environments but also reduce energy consumption and contribute to sustainable development. Biomass-based porous fibers, featuring excellent thermal insulation properties and environmental sustainability, demonstrate substantial potential in the field of personal thermal management. In this work, a series of cellulose acetate (CA)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) porous fibers were prepared via a combination of wet spinning and freeze-drying techniques. The structure–property relationships among the preparation process, microstructure, and thermal insulation behavior were systematically investigated. Notably, at a CA/TPU mass ratio of 9/7 and a winding speed of 3.9 mm/s, the obtained porous fibers achieved a breaking stress of 2.84 MPa and a breaking strain of 7.41%. Such superior mechanical property not only ensures the stable continuous production of fibers during wet spinning, but also satisfy the tensile and weaving requirements of subsequent textile processing. Furthermore, the corresponding plain weave fabric exhibited optimal thermal insulation performance with a low thermal conductivity of 0.029 W/(m K). This work provides valuable guidance for the structural design and performance improvement of porous fibers, laying a solid foundation for their prospective applications in energy-efficient textiles.

Effect of Rubber-to-Plastic Ratio on POE/HDPE Thermoplastic Vulcanizates Prepared by Dynamic Vulcanization

Ruijun Zhang,Qiqi He,Junhua Li,Jianhua Qian

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are attracting growing interest for their recyclability, low cost, and ease of processing. While polypropylene-based TPVs are well studied and partly commercialized, polyethylene-based systems remain underexplored. Polypropylene tends to degrade during dynamic vulcanization due to its tertiary carbon atoms, requiring stabilizers and complicating processing. In contrast, polyethylene offers better thermal stability and simpler processing, making it a promising alternative for developing cost-effective and high-performance TPVs. In this study, a series of TPVs based on polyolefin elastomer (POE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were prepared via dynamic vulcanization using 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)hexane (DBPH) as a crosslinking agent under optimized conditions. The effects of varying rubber-to-plastic ratios on the mechanical, rheological, and thermal properties were systematically investigated. As the POE content increased, torque and gel content rose, while melting/crystallization temperatures and crystallinity decreased. At a rubber-to-plastic ratio of 80:20, the TPV exhibited the best overall performance, with a tensile strength of 4.8 MPa, elongation at break of 282%, and hysteresis loss of 55%. Rheological measurements revealed strong crosslinked networks and good processability under shear. This study demonstrates the significant influence of rubber-to-plastic ratio on TPV properties and offers a practical route to developing high-performance, polyethylene-based thermoplastic elastomers.

Synergistic Effect of Epoxy Soybean Oil and Self-Assembly Nucleator on Enhancing Poly(Lactic Acid) Crystallization

Cuiling Yu,Shihang Ye,Lintao Yang,Qiannan Geng,Yue Ren,Mengfan Jing,Yaming Wang

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising biobased biodegradable plastic but suffers from the drawback of a slow crystallization rate. Herein, a biobased plasticizer epoxy soybean oil (ESO) and a self-assembly nucleator octamethylenedicarboxylic dibenzoylhydrazide (OMBH) were combined with the objective to raise the crystallinity of PLA under practical injection molding. The crystallization behavior was investigated under either isothermal or nonisothermal conditions. In addition, the samples were injection molded and the influence of mold temperature on the crystallinity was evaluated. It is found that ESO and OMBH have a synergetic effect of accelerating PLA crystallization, especially at a high cooling rate. This is further supported by the isothermal crystallization results at a wide crystallization temperature range. The crystallizability of the optimized recipe was enough to receive crystalline articles during the cycle time with the use of hot molds. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the combination of ESO and OMBH further improves the temperature resistance of PLA. This work demonstrates that combining ESO with OMBH can considerably improve the crystallization performance of PLA, providing insights for designing temperature-resistant biobased PLA materials.

Fast-Curing Transparent Epoxy Films With Superior Flexural Durability, Insulation and Barrier Properties

Shangzhe Li,Yan Zhang,Wen Liu,Shuo Wang,Jinrui Wu,Zhengping Fang

Transparent and flexural epoxy resin represents an emerging class of materials for advanced encapsulation and adhesives in the electronics and semiconductor industries. Although toughening components have been reported to improve EP flexibility, multi-stage curing processes for complete crosslinking require optimization, and EP films' comprehensive properties (flexibility, optical transparency, water barrier, and electrical insulation) have rarely been systematically co-evaluated. To address these challenges, a novel class of transparent and flexible epoxy films was developed through a fast curing process (80°C/20 min) using m-xylylenediamine (M-XDA) as the curing agent. By strategically modulating the molecular ratio of hydrogenated bisphenol A epoxy resin (HBPA) and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE), the optimal balance of multifunctional properties, including exceptional optical transparency, mechanical flexibility, electrical insulation, and barrier performance was achieved. Among the synthesized variants, H3:E7 epoxy demonstrates outstanding characteristics: excellent transparency (transmittance of 90.6%), remarkable flexibility (> 100,000 bending cycles), low water vapor transmission rate (4.1 g·m −2 ·24 h −1 ), superior insulation (1.4 × 10 14 Ω·cm) and high adhesive strength (13.4 MPa). Isothermal curing kinetics analysis confirms the scientific validity of the optimized 80°C/20 min rapid-curing protocol. This work establishes a facile yet effective methodology to expand the application scope of epoxy resins in high-value technological domains.
