Plating Al coating on high-strength steel in chloroaluminate ionic liquid under pulse current modes

Yang Nan,Wen Li,Shaojie Li,Qi Wei,Weiping Li

Aluminum coating is a potential candidate for cadmium coating replacement due to its excellent corrosion resistance and nontoxicity. Among the fabrication methods of Al coating, plating Al via ionic liquids has drawn major attention of researchers because of the superiority of controllability, stability and low energy consumption. However, the evolution rules of plating aluminum on high-strength steel via pulse current modes at room temperature requires deeper investigation. In this work, pulse current density and pulse duty factor are regulated to reveal the plating patterns of Al on 300M high-strength steel in AlCl 3 -EMIC (2:1 in mole) ionic liquid. It is found that higher current density can significantly facilitate the nucleation of Al grains and the compactness of morphology, while an enlarged pulse duty factor tends to result in more regular Al crystals. When the current density and the pulse duty factor are fixed at 20 mA cm −2 and 80 %, the densest and most uniform aluminum coating is obtained. The component of Al coating is verified to be pure Al crystals with good adhesion and the plating process achieves a high current efficiency of 97.27 %. Under the protection of Al coating, the impedance and galvanic corrosion current density of 300M steel substrate are optimized by two orders of magnitude, and the corrosion current density is markedly decreased from 5.58 μA cm −2 to 0.77 μA cm −2 .

Insight into the activation mechanism of methylene C–H bond over Ce–Al composite oxide

Xiangwei Ren,Yue Zhang,Shuzhen Lyu,Li Wang,Ruichen Liu,Guozhu Liu,Rongrong Zhang

Oxidation of methylene compounds remains a critical challenge due to the difficult activation of C–H bond. Herein, Ce–Al composite oxide was prepared and employed for oxidation of 2-alkyl-anthrone and anthracene to corresponding anthraquinone (AQ) which is used widely in the H 2 O 2 production by the anthraquinone process and fine chemical industries, with air at mild conditions. Characterization results show that incorporation of Ce, existing partially in CeAlO 3 phase, results in the generation of oxygen vacancies and enhancement of reducibility. The optimal Ce–Al composite oxide (10%CeAl) exhibits superior performance in oxidation of 2-alkyl-anthrone and anthracene to AQ. The conversion of 100% could be achieved for 2-alkyl-anthrone to AQ at reaction time of 8 h and for 2-alkyl-anthracene to AQ at 15 h over 10%CeAl, with 100% selectivity. In-situ electron paramagnetic resonance measurements and DFT calculations reveal that the Ce–O–Al structure in CeAlO 3 phase promotes the formation of carbon-centered radical R • through altering the C–H cleavage mechanism from hydrogen atom transfer to proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), and superoxide anion radicals (O 2 •− ) formed on oxygen vacancies promote oxidation of R • .

Synergistically modulating multiscale polarizations in Al@Al2O3@TiO2/PVDF composites towards elevated integrating dielectric properties

Yaofei Lin,Guangheng Wang,Xingxing Meng,Jiahuan Zhao,Hongju Wu,Wenying Zhou

Against the backdrop of the booming sophisticated electronics industry, polymer composites integrating superior dielectric permittivity ( ε ), low loss (tan δ ) and excellent breakdown strength ( E b ) have become a persistent pursuit in the research community. To simultaneously bolster the ε and E b in alumina (Al)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), in this study the neat Al particles were first surface-oxidized to thicken the alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) thickness and then encapsulated with a titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) layer, followed by an investigation into the dielectric properties of the resulting Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF composites. The results indicate that the Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF exhibits a higher ε and E b but lower tan δ relative to pristine Al/PVDF. The elevated ε stems from the synergistic regulation of high-frequency fast intra-particle and low-frequency slow inter-particle polarizations in Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF. The Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 double-shell not only prevents direct contact between conductive Al but also induces deep traps immobilizing charges and lifts the energy barrier for captured charges de-trapping, thus restraining the tan δ and leakage current. Moreover, the double-shell effectively strengthens interfacial interactions and alleviates strong dielectric mismatch between the two components, leading to much reduced electric tree growth and improved E b . Theoretical simulation further reveals a profound understanding of the inherent multiple polarization mechanisms and the charge migration modulation induced by the double-shell structure. So, this work provides unique insights for realizing simultaneously high ε , superior E b and minimal tan δ via core@double-shell structure in percolating composites, which cannot be achieved in traditional composites, offering considerable application potential in power equipment and electric devices.

Improving ignition and combustion performance of Al@Ni in CMDB Propellants: Effect of nickel coating

Jiankan Zhang,Fengqi Zhao,Hui Li,Zhifeng Yuan,Ming Zhang,Yanjing Yang,Qing Pei,Ying Wang,Xueli Chen,Zhao Qin

Micron-sized aluminum particles tend to melt into agglomerates, leading to incomplete combustion, two-phase flow losses, and energy decrease of propellants. The higher ignition performance of core–shell Al@Ni makes it a promising candidate fuel with high combustion efficiency. However, little work has been done to study the combustion of Al@Ni in propellants. Here, we report a first attempt to investigate the combustion mechanism of core–shell Al@Ni in the double-based propellant containing high energy explosive HMX , and evaluate its potential as a fuel. Nickel in Al@Ni is determined to play a critical role during its intrinsic combustion and the combustion in propellants. In the condensed phase, the presence of Ni enhances the oxidation process by forming a porous oxide layer on the aluminum surface that promotes oxygen diffusion. Subsequently the phase transition and expansion of Ni break down this oxide layer, leading to the earlier ignition on the burning surface. Upon Al melting, the alloying of Ni and Al accelerates the volume expansion and surface tension reduction of the fuel, giving rise to vigorous melt-dispersion combustion and enhanced energy release. Enhanced thermal feedback and thermal decomposition exotherm combined to increase the burning rate of propellant. The resulting higher flame temperature allows the evaporation of small aluminum droplets into vapor to form smoke oxide productions, further reducing the size distribution of the condensed combustion products (CCPs). This study demonstrates the potential of Al@Ni as an effective fuel for double-based propellants, and provides the insight into its combustion mechanism in HMX-CMDB propellants, which is believed to be important for the development of novel aluminum-based fuels for solid propellants.

Low-Cost Al-Doped Layered Cathodes with Improved Electrochemical Performance for Rechargeable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Yi-Hu Feng,Zhiwei Cheng,Chen-Liang Xu,Lianzheng Yu,Duo Si,Boheng Yuan,Mengting Liu,Bin Zhao,Peng-Fei Wang,Xiaogang Han

O3-NaNi0.25Fe0.5Mn0.25O2 layered oxide is considered one of the most promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries because of its advantages, such as its large capacity and low cost. However, the practical application of this material is limited by its poor cyclic stability and insufficient rate capability. Here, a strategy to substitute the Fe3+ in NaNi0.25Fe0.5Mn0.25O2 with Al3+ is adopted to address these issues. The substitution of Fe3+ with Al3+ enhances the framework stability and phase transition reversibility of the parent NaNi0.25Fe0.5Mn0.25O2 material by forming a stronger TM–O bond, which improves the cycling stability. Moreover, partial Al3+ substitution increases the interslab distance, providing a spacious path for Na+ diffusion and resulting in fast diffusion kinetics, which lead to improved rate capability. Consequently, the target NaNi0.25Fe0.5–xAlxMn0.25O2 sample with optimal x = 0.045 exhibits a remarkable electrochemical performance in a Na-ion cell with a large reversible capacity of 131.7 mA h g–1, a stable retention of approximately 81.6% after cycling at 1C for 100 cycles, and a rate performance of 81.3 mA h g–1 at 10C. This method might pave the way for novel means of improving the electrochemical properties of layered transitional-metal oxides and provide insightful guidance for the design of low-cost cathode materials.

Oxidative Cleavage of Methyl Epoxystearate over Al-MCM-41-Assisted WO3∙nH2O for Aldehyde Products

Kainan Xing,Minghe Cao,Qinkai Zhu,Haojie Yin,Meizhen Lu,Jianbing Ji

Vegetable oils and their derivatives are of great interest because of their abundance and renewability. This paper prepares nonanal (N) and methyl 9-oxonanoate (M) from methyl epoxystearate (ME) with WO 3 ∙0.33H 2 O, WO 3 ∙H 2 O, and WO 3 ∙2H 2 O as catalysts and H 2 O 2 as the oxidant without the use of organic solvent. The reaction temperature, catalyst amount, H 2 O 2 amount, and reaction time effects on ME conversion and N/M yield are investigated. The results show that WO 3 ∙H 2 O has the best catalytic performance. The optimal reaction conditions are: reaction temperature 60 °C, reaction time 40 min, ME/H 2 O 2 /WO 3 ∙H 2 O molar ratio 1/1.2/0.4, under which the ME conversion and N/M yield reach 95% and 70%, respectively. WO 3 ∙ n H 2 O reacts with H 2 O 2 to form soluble tungsten anions, resulting in severe tungsten loss. Al-MCM-41 materials with different silicon to aluminum molar ratios are added to the reaction system as adsorbents to recover the catalyst by effective adsorption of tungsten anions. The adsorption performance improves as the Si/Al ratio decreases, however, the ME conversion and N/M yield decrease. Thus, 50 is the most suitable Si/Al ratio. The ME conversion and N/M yield can still reach 90% and 60% after four times of use. Practical applications : The nonanal has a natural fragrance and can be used in the cosmetic industry as well as in the preparation of bio-based surfactants. The methyl 9-oxonanoate can be converted into polymer monomers by hydrogenation or amination. The results show that WO 3 ∙ n H 2 O has good catalytic activity, and a satisfying yield of aldehyde products is obtained under mild reaction conditions.

Molten salt dynamic sealing synthesis of MAX phases (Ti3AlC2, Ti3SiC2 et al.) powder in air

Zetan Liu,Jingkun Xu,Xiaoqing Xi,Weijia Luo,Ji Zhou

Since the synthesis of non-oxidized ceramic and alloy powders requires both high temperature and oxygen insulation conditions, here we demonstrate a cost-efficient molten salt sealing/shielded synthesis method with dynamic gas tightness. Compared to conventional synthesis method, it can prevent the loss of reaction materials at high temperature, cut off the connection between reacting material and outside air, and does not require long-time ball milling mixing treatment or provision of applied pressing before or during heating. Only low-cost salts (e.g., NaCl, KCl), a few minutes of raw material mixing, and regular heating molds are required to obtain high-purity (>96 wt%), micron-sized Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 SiC 2 powders with narrow size distribution, which significantly decreased the complexity and production costs in the synthesis process. The effect of temperature and raw material content on the products were investigated. The mechanism of diffusion reaction between reactants in molten salt environment was analyzed. The new method developed here was also applicable to Ti 2 AlC, V 2 AlC and Cr 2 AlC MAX phases, as well as provided new ideas for the preparation of other MXenes precursors with certain stoichiometric ratios, air-sensitive materials and nanopowders .

Synergistic reinforcement effect of Fe and in-situ synthesized MgAlB4 whiskers in Al matrix composites

Fucheng Wang,Jinfeng Zhang,Kaixin Sun,Liwei Quan,Jing Wang,Naiqin Zhao,Chunsheng Shi,Shijian Zheng

Interfacial bonding is an important factor affecting the mechanical properties of composites. The interface between the in-situ synthesized ceramic phase and the metal matrix is considered ideal, so little attention is paid to the interfacial modification. In this work, we found that interfacial segregation affects the growth of the MgAlB 4 whisker and the interface of reinforcement and matrix in the composites. Systematic experiments and theoretical calculations indicate Fe solute prefer to segregate at the MgAlB 4 - { 10 1 ‾ 0 } /Al interfaces in in-situ synthesized MgAlB 4 /Al composites, which is helpful to reduce system free energy. On the one hand, Fe segregation induces the whisker coarsening and the formation of planar defects with a sandwich structure formed by a layer of Fe atoms and two layers of Al atoms in coarse-whiskers, on the other hand, it improves the interfacial strength . Although extra Fe aggravates the whisker coarsening, the synergistic reinforcing effect of the whiskers and the extra Fe is greater than the sum of their individual reinforcing effects. This work demonstrates that interfacial segregation can be used to modulate the size of reinforcements and improve interfacial strength.

pH-responsive bimetallic Ce-ZIF-8 nanocontainer for the active corrosion protection of Al alloys

Xianliang Li,Yuyang Di,Zhihao Chen,Wenzhong Yang

In this study, novel pH-sensitive bimetallic Ce-ZIF-8 nanocontainers are loaded with benzotriazole (BTA) corrosion inhibitors and then decorated with a polydopamine (PDA) shell. The applied PDA layer acts as an acid-responsive gatekeeper, controlling the intelligent release of the encapsulated inhibitors and also preventing their self-leakage. UV–vis and ICP-OES tests indicate that the BTA and cerium inhibitors release slowly in the neutral 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Afterward, the designed pH-responsive Ce-ZIF-8-BTA-PDA nanocontainers are dispersed uniformly in the epoxy matrix as a novel intelligent filler. EIS results demonstrate that the incorporation of Ce-ZIF-8-BTA-PDA nanocontainers significantly improves the corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings, in which the low-frequency impedance is about three orders of magnitude higher than that of the pure epoxy coating after 60 days of immersion. Furthermore, the low-frequency value of the scratched Epoxy-Ce-ZIF-8-BTA-PDA coating increases from 5.05 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 to 8.83 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 after 8 h of exposure to the 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, confirming their outstanding self-healing performance. The excellent corrosion protection and self-healing ability are due to the incorporation of the Ce-ZIF-8-BTA-PDA nanocontainers, improving the surface compactness and therefore enhancing the physical barrier effect. Moreover, the intelligent release of the encapsulated corrosion inhibitors provides active corrosion protection performance by forming a dense protective film on the Al alloy surface when the coating is damaged. Meanwhile, the highly dispersed nanocontainers lengthen the diffusion path of corrosive ions and therefore extend the service life of the epoxy coatings in aggressive environments. This new type of acid-responsive smart coating based on the bimetallic Ce-ZIF-8 nanocontainers has the potential to broaden the future applications of active corrosion protection of metals.

Foaming mechanism of polishing porcelain stoneware tile residues via adding C, Al and Si powder

Hao Xiong,Anze Shui,Qingliang Shan,Shenghui Zeng,Xiuan Xi,Bin Du

Polishing porcelain stoneware tile residues (PPR) is used to prepare foamed ceramic to solve the problem of solid waste discharge in ceramic industry. In this study, C, Al and Si powder were added to the simulated PPR to control foaming, and the mechanism of silicon carbide foaming in the PPR was discussed in detail. After these powders were introduced into the simulated PPR, the phenomenon of alumina crystallization on the pore wall of the foamed ceramic and the diffusion of gas in the foamed ceramic were discovered to be exciting. The foaming mechanism of PPR is detailed as follows: the diffusion rate of oxygen in silicate liquid is faster than that of CO during sintering, so the CO generated by incomplete oxidation of silicon carbide in PPR accumulates in the liquid, which makes the volume of ceramics expand and causes foaming.

The interactions between Al (III) and Ti (IV) in the composite coagulant polyaluminum-titanium chloride

Beibei Liu,Baoyu Gao,Kangying Guo,Jingwen Pan,Qinyan Yue

Safe and effective coagulants are necessary for surface water treatment. The polyaluminum-titanium chloride (PATC) composite coagulant has promise but its application is limited due to the lack of fundamental theoretical research. We prepared a series of novel PATCs and investigated the effects of the interaction between Al (III) and Ti (IV) on the chemical species distribution, physicochemical properties and coagulation efficiencies. The Al-O-Ti bonds observed in the PATC infrared spectra were predicted by density functional theory computation to appear in 4-atom rings in the structure. The differences in Al species distribution of PATC and PAC illustrated that the introduction of Ti retarded the hydrolysis of monomeric Al species (Al a ) and medium polymerized Al species (Al b ) to colloidal Al species (Al c ) at low B levels, but the transformation was promoted at high basicities (B). PATCs exhibited higher charge densities and larger molecular weights than PAC at the same B levels, which contributed to their excellent coagulation efficiencies. PATC with low B values but high Al/Ti molar ratios mainly provided charge neutralization in removal of humic acid kaolin, while the dominant coagulation mechanism converted from charge neutralization to sweeping and bridging effects at high B values or low Al/Ti molar ratios.

Al-doped α-MnO2 coated by lignin for high-performance rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Jingliang Xu,Xinhang Hu,Md Asraful Alam,Gul Muhammad,Yongkun Lv,Minghai Wang,Chenjie Zhu,Wenlong Xiong

Zn/MnO2 batteries, one of the most widely studied rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries, suffer from poor cyclability because the structure of MnO2 is labile with cycling. Herein, the structural stability of α-MnO2 is enhanced by simultaneous Al3+ doping and lignin coating during the formation of α-MnO2 crystals in a hydrothermal process. Al3+ enters the [MnO6] octahedron accompanied by producing oxygen vacancies, and lignin further stabilizes the doped Al3+ via strong interaction in the prepared material, Al-doped α-MnO2 coated by lignin (L + Al@α-MnO2). Meanwhile, the conductivity of L + Al@α-MnO2 improves due to Al3+ doping, and the surface area of L + Al@α-MnO2 increases because of the production of nanorod structures after Al3+ doping and lignin coating. Compared with the reference α-MnO2 cathode, the L + Al@α-MnO2 cathode achieves superior performance with durably high reversible capacity (∼180 mA h g−1 at 1.5 A g−1) and good cycle stability. In addition, ex situ X-ray diffraction characterization of the cathode at different voltages in the first cycle is employed to study the related mechanism on improving battery performance. This study may provide ideas of designing advanced cathode materials for other aqueous metal-ion batteries.
