A co-sintering route for fabricating ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 bi-layer ultrafiltration membranes on quartz supports was proposed. By combining the piezoelectric support and the weak capillary force of transition layer, a thin (∼300 nm), narrowly distributed pore size, and built-in ultrasonic antifouling ultrafiltration membrane was prepared. Considering the mechanical strength of the Al 2 O 3 layer and the interfacial bonding, a co-sintering temperature of 950 °C was selected. Meanwhile, a holding step at 600 °C was introduced to alleviate the thermodynamic mismatch between the two layers caused by the phase transition of the support. The membrane maintained excellent piezoelectric response, along with high flux (366 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), low roughness (11.6 nm), and small pore size (∼16 nm). The antifouling performance of the piezoelectric ultrafiltration membrane was evaluated through filtration experiments of nano-sized water-in-oil emulsions. The stable permeability of the ultrafiltration membrane was 2.8 times higher than that of the support and further increased by 16.4 % when in situ ultrasound is applied, reaching 0.829 in the stable normalized flux ( J/J 0 ). Additionally, after cleaning, the membrane flux was almost completely restored. The piezoelectric ceramic membranes prepared by this method have great potential for oil-water separation.

The selective hydrogenolysis of glucose into 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PG) constitutes a significant yet challenging transformation in biomass valorization, as it involves a highly coupled network of isomerization, C-C bond cleavage, and hydrogenation steps. Herein, a highly efficient Ni-CeO2catalyst supported by basic Al2O3is developed via a urea-assisted precipitation strategy. Systematic catalytic evaluation and comprehensive characterization reveal that this synthesis method markedly enhances Ni dispersion and hydrogen activation capacity, while CeO2modification modulates the electronic state of Ni and introduces strong Lewis basic sites associated with oxygen vacancies. The synergistic interplay between Ni and CeO2effectively promotes glucose isomerization and retro-aldol condensation while maintaining sufficient hydrogenation activity. As a result, the optimized catalyst achieves a 1,2-PG yield of 45.1% with over 99% glucose conversion under optimal hydrothermal reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits relatively stable catalytic performance over four consecutive runs. This work elucidates key structure–activity relationships in multifunctional Ni-based catalysts and provides design principles for efficient biomass-derived polyol production.

In this study, B 4 C@ZrB 2 core-shell powders were synthesized via a molten-salt method and subsequently consolidated with an Al 2 O 3 matrix by spark plasma sintering (SPS) to fabricate Al 2 O 3 -B 4 C@ZrB 2 composite ceramics. The core-shell architecture, consisting of a micron-sized B 4 C core coated with a submicron-thick ZrB 2 shell, was preserved in the sintered composites, forming well-defined composite toughening units. This unique geometric configuration, combined with multi-dimensional heterogeneities in phase composition (Al 2 O 3 /B 4 C/ZrB 2 ), grain size (micron/submicron), and thermal expansion coefficients (7.2/4.5/6.2 ×10 −6 K −1 ), actively induces multi-dimensional crack propagation: first along the Al 2 O 3 -ZrB 2 interface, then through the submicron‑thick ZrB 2 shell, along the micron‑sized B 4 C-ZrB 2 interface, out through the ZrB 2 shell again, and finally along the ZrB 2 -Al 2 O 3 interface before re-entering the Al 2 O 3 matrix. Such a shuttling behavior across multiple interfaces collectively dissipates substantial crack-propagation energy. The composite sintered at 1500 °C reached near-full densification (relative density 99.78 ± 0.12%) and exhibited excellent mechanical properties: Vickers hardness of 19.23 ± 0.19 GPa, flexural strength of 548 ± 31 MPa and fracture toughness of 6.79 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 (indentation method) and 6.27 ± 0.42 MPa·m 1/2 (SENB method). This work provides a new strategy for developing high‑performance structural ceramics.

A novel Al 2 O 3 –PDA–MoS 2 nanohybrid was synthesized by depositing Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles on the surface of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) sheets covered with polydopamine (PDA). Many characterizations demonstrated that the Al 2 O 3 was successfully deposited on the surface of MoS 2 . It was found that when the mass ratio of PDA–MoS 2 to Al 2 O 3 was 1.5:1, the nano-hybrid filler showed good dispersion performance. Then, the composite coating samples were prepared by adding Al 2 O 3 –PDA–MoS 2 (1.5:1) hybrid to waterborne epoxy resin. The effects of Al 2 O 3 , MoS 2 , and PDA–MoS 2 on the corrosion resistance of epoxy coating were also investigated. The potentiodynamic polarization test demonstrated that Al 2 O 3 –PDA–MoS 2 nanohybrids had excellent corrosion inhibition properties. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy also revealed that the impedance modulus of Al 2 O 3 –PDA–MoS 2 /EP composite coating was nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure epoxy resin after immersion in saline for 21 days. This study confirmed that Al 2 O 3 –PDA–MoS 2 nanosheets had better barrier properties and corrosion inhibition properties, and provided a new idea for the wide application of nanofillers in the field of anticorrosion.

A seeding-free synthesis strategy was developed for the preparation of dense and phase-pure zeolite FAU membranes through mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) modification of porous Al 2 O 3 tubes. Zeolite FAU nutrients can be attracted and bound to the support surface via the formation of strong non-covalent and covalent chemical bonds, thus promoting the nucleation and growth of uniform, well-intergrown and phase-pure zeolite FAU membranes. The SEM and XRD characterizations demonstrate that a relative thin but dense and pure-phase zeolite FAU membrane with a thickness of about 2.3 µm can be obtained on the PDA-modified Al 2 O 3 tube after crystallization at 75 °C for 24 h, and no visible cracks, pinholes or other defects are observed on the membrane layer. The zeolite FAU membrane prepared at 75 °C for 24 h was evaluated in single gas permeation and mixed gas separation. For binary mixtures at 50 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H 2 /CH 4 and H 2 /C 3 H 8 are 9.9 and 127.7, respectively, which are much higher than the corresponding Knudsen coefficients. And relative high H 2 permeance of about 1.9×10 −7 mol m −2 s −1 Pa −1 can be obtained through the FAU membrane due to the thin layer and the relative wide pore size of 0.74 nm, demonstrating a viable direction for promising application of FAU membranes in hydrogen purification and separation.

Against the backdrop of the booming sophisticated electronics industry, polymer composites integrating superior dielectric permittivity ( ε ), low loss (tan δ ) and excellent breakdown strength ( E b ) have become a persistent pursuit in the research community. To simultaneously bolster the ε and E b in alumina (Al)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), in this study the neat Al particles were first surface-oxidized to thicken the alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) thickness and then encapsulated with a titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) layer, followed by an investigation into the dielectric properties of the resulting Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF composites. The results indicate that the Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF exhibits a higher ε and E b but lower tan δ relative to pristine Al/PVDF. The elevated ε stems from the synergistic regulation of high-frequency fast intra-particle and low-frequency slow inter-particle polarizations in Al@Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF. The Al 2 O 3 @TiO 2 double-shell not only prevents direct contact between conductive Al but also induces deep traps immobilizing charges and lifts the energy barrier for captured charges de-trapping, thus restraining the tan δ and leakage current. Moreover, the double-shell effectively strengthens interfacial interactions and alleviates strong dielectric mismatch between the two components, leading to much reduced electric tree growth and improved E b . Theoretical simulation further reveals a profound understanding of the inherent multiple polarization mechanisms and the charge migration modulation induced by the double-shell structure. So, this work provides unique insights for realizing simultaneously high ε , superior E b and minimal tan δ via core@double-shell structure in percolating composites, which cannot be achieved in traditional composites, offering considerable application potential in power equipment and electric devices.

Al2O3 crucible is commonly used during the sintering process of Li7La3Zr2O12 pellets, which always introduces unintentional Al-containing impurities to the final product. Rare investigations are focused on the mechanism of this crucible contamination up to now. Based on the study in this work, it is found that the extra Li2CO3 in the Li7La3Zr2O12 powder is a crucial factor in forming this kind of Al-containing impurities in the obtained pellets. The pyrolytic Li2O from Li2CO3 will react with Al2O3 at high temperature, forming liquid Li-Al-O eutectic and further promoting the dissolution of aluminum oxide crucible. Besides, the extra Li2CO3 can also affect the compactness and the distribution of Al element in the pellets, resulting in crystal structure transformation.

The rational design of long-lifetime and low-energy-consumption ceramic membranes is challenging, especially for the sustainable treatment of industrial wastewater to solve environmental pollution issues. In this work, a whisker reinforcement strategy is proposed to fabricate gradient composite ceramic membranes with enhanced interfacial bonding strength. The introduction of a whisker intermediate layer effectively mitigates the cracking and deformation issues caused by mismatched shrinkage between membrane layers during co-sintering. The resulting composite ceramic membrane exhibits an average pore size of 95 nm and a permeance of 1340 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . The membrane exhibits a rejection rate of 99.6% for carbon particle suspensions and maintains a permeance recovery ratio of 85% after six separation-backwashing cycles. This work provides a promising and cost-effective strategy for the design of highly stable composite ceramic membranes, paving the way for their practical application in industrial wastewater treatment.

Mechanical-electromagnetic integrated design has great potential in the development of electromagnetic shielding equipment for military use. In this study, Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ceramics with triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) were fabricated using digital light processing (DLP) technology. The preparation of SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 powders is vital for DLP because minimal aggregates or sedimentation in the ceramic paste is required. Debinding and sintering programs were developed to prevent defects in the designed microstructure. The interfacial characterization demonstrated that the surfaces of the sintered ceramics were compact and smooth. The compression strength of the TPMS ceramic with a volume fraction of 50% was 24 MPa, which is relatively good among additively manufactured cellular ceramics. The TPMS structures also exhibited significant electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness in the X-band (2 to 18 GHz), and the shielding performance was adequate to meet the demands of electromagnetic shielding materials . Additive manufacturing of Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ceramic with TPMS architectures was successfully achieved by considering the mechanical-electromagnetic integration.

Catalytic oxidation is a valuable residual methane removal method, and Pd-based catalysts are the most robust and widely applied system. Yet, they suffer from poor stability in practical applications due to sintering and water poisoning. In this work, we prepared a high-performance PdNi/Al2O3 catalyst with PdO-NiO and PdO-NiAl2O4 dual interfaces. PdNi/Al2O3 showed excellent hydrothermal stability after aging at 750 °C, 10% H2O for 72 h, with the T50 remaining below 315 °C. In addition, compared to bare Pd/Al2O3, PdNi/Al2O3 exhibited a better low-temperature activity with a T50 of 287 °C, rivaling state-of-the-art Pd-based catalysts. Combining structural characterizations and DFT calculations, it was shown that dual interfaces promoted the activation of methane C–H bonds and suppressed the adsorption of surface water/hydroxyl groups and agglomeration of PdO particles. This study has provided new perceptions for exploring the influence of interfacial interactions and offered a route to synthesize high-stability palladium catalysts.

In this paper, a series of cobalt catalysts modified by different lanthanide metals were synthesized via co-impregnation method using inexpensive industrial-grade alumina as a support for dry reforming of methane. The effect of lanthanide metals as accelerators of cobalt-based catalysts on catalytic performance and anti-coking properties was mainly investigated. The textural relationships between the catalytic performance and physicochemical properties of cobalt-based catalysts doped with different lanthanide metals were further investigated. Different characterization techniques demonstrate the positive effect of lanthanide metals on the physicochemical properties of catalysts. The results show that the electron transfer between cobalt species and lanthanide metal oxides is significantly enhanced due to the introduction of lanthanide elements. The process generates more active sites, which is favorable for the adsorption and activation of methane. In addition, the abundant medium basic sites and oxygen vacancies on the surface of cobalt-based catalysts with the effect of lanthanides promoted the adsorption and activation of carbon dioxide and the gasification of carbon accumulation, which greatly improved the anti-carbon accumulation performance of the catalysts. Therefore, the prepared cobalt-lanthanum-based catalysts showed the best catalytic effect and have great potential for application.

The preparation of electrolyte with excellent ionic conduction is an important development direction in the practical application of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Traditional methods to improve ion conduction was structure doping to develop electrolyte materials. In this work, the ionic conductor Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 2-δ (SDC) was modified by insulator Al 2 O 3 to enhance ion conduction and apply as electrolytes for the SOFC. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization clearly clarified that a thin Al 2 O 3 layer in the amorphous state coated on SDC to form the SDC@Al 2 O 3 core−shell structure. The SDC@Al 2 O 3 electrolyte with the core−shell structure possesses a super ionic conductivity of 0.096 S cm −1 and results in advanced cell performance of 1190 mW cm −2 at 550°C. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the SDC@Al 2 O 3 core–shell structure significantly improved in comparison with pure SDC, the newly produced oxygen vacancies can promote the oxygen ion transport. Moreover, the interface between SDC and Al 2 O 3 provides a fast channel for the proton transport. In addition, the SDC-based SOFC was usually suffered from the reduction of the SDC electrolyte and the accompanying generated electron conduction should deteriorate the cell performance, this is the main challenge for the SDC electrolyte application. In our case, the Al 2 O 3 shell on the SDC surface not only can avoid the contact between SDC and hydrogen to eliminate the reduction of SDC but also can restrain electron conduction due to the electron insulation characteristic of the Al 2 O 3 shell. This work demonstrates an efficient approach to develop the advanced low-temperature SOFC technology from material fundamentals.
