Poly(1-vinylimidazole)-grafted Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 magnetic nanoparticles (FSPV) were developed to remove both free Cd(II) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) complexed Cd(II) from water. The adsorption capacity of NTA-complexed Cd(II) (42.1 mg/g) was larger than that of free Cd(II) (24.8 mg/g). Free Cd(II) and NTA-complexed Cd(II) could be reduced from 50 μg/L to below 5 μg/L within 10 and 20 min, respectively. FSPV could effectively remove trace free and NTA-complexed Cd(II) over broad pH ranges of 5–10 and 5–11, respectively. Moreover, the presence of seven coexisting ions (up to 100 mM) including four cations (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ) and three anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , and SO 4 2− ) all slightly promoted the removal of both free and NTA-complexed Cd(II) onto FSPV. The removal of free Cd(II) or NTA-complexed Cd(II) was not obviously affected by the presence of Ni(II) and Co(II) (50 μg/L), humic acid (up to 3 mg/L as TOC) or alginate (up to 8 mg/L as TOC). In addition, FSPV could be regenerated with 10 mM HCl in 10 min, and the removal of both types of Cd(II) maintained above 95% in five consecutive adsorption/regeneration cycles. Therefore, FSPV could be utilized as promising adsorbent for both free and NTA-complexed Cd(II).

Nano-zero-valent iron/activated carbon (nZVI/AC) composite was evaluated for its effectiveness in the stabilization of Cu, Pb, Cd, and Cr in dredged river sediment. Synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) were adopted to compare the effects of nZVI/AC dosage, particle size, time duration, and temperature on heavy metal leachability. The results show that leachability dropped considerably with the addition of nZVI/AC and powdered particles in the size of 0.075–0.18 mm was more effective in stabilization than granular ones. Stabilization effect was stable in long-term and robust against changes in temperature. Tessier sequential extraction revealed that heavy metals were associated with solid particle, inorganic or organic matters in sediment. The addition of nZVI/AC was able to convert relatively weakly bound heavy metals into more strongly bound species and thus reduce the bioavailability and toxicity. Also, the standard potential of heavy metals may decide the mechanism of stabilization process.

An electrochemical sensor was developed for detecting heavy metal ions by using a phytic acid functionalized polypyrrole (PPy)/graphene oxide (GO) modified electrode. PPy/GO nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization. The PPy/GO nanocomposites were functionalized with phytic acid (PA) molecules by electrostatic attraction. The structural features of the fabricated nanocomposites were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The PA/PPy/GO modified electrode exhibited high electrochemical conductivity, and produced a remarkable increase in peak current compared with the PPy/GO and PA/GO modified electrodes. The developed sensor was used for the electrochemical analysis of various trace metal ions by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode demonstrated to measure Cd(II) and Pb(II) with a linear working range of 5–150 μg/L. This work demonstrated a simple, rapid and high performing electrochemical strategy for high-sensitivity detection of heavy metal ions.

Recently, ordered mesoporous carbon has displayed attractive performance in electrochemical catalysis and sensing, benefiting from its rich and tunable pore texture. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on a three-dimensionally interconnected mesoporous graphene framework (MGF) was developed for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. Attributable to the abundant three-dimensional mesopores and good electrical conductivity of MGF, as well as the synergistic effect of Nafion and in-situ plated bismuth films, a highly sensitive determination of mixed metals at a Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE is achieved. The proposed sensor exhibits wide linear responses for Cd(II) and Pb(II), ranging from 2–70 μg L −1 and 0.5–110 μg L −1 , respectively. The detection limits are about 0.5 and 0.1 μg L −1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively, which are about 6 and 100 times lower than the drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE has been applied for the detection of mixed metals in real water samples. The satisfying recoveries (87.5-109.2%) and relative standard deviations (RSD, 3.7-8.6%) make the proposed electrode a promising candidate for rapid and on-site monitoring of environmental metallic pollutants.

A large amount of soluble beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was immobilized on polypropylene non-woven fabric (PP) by radiation and chemical grafting to obtain PP-g-MAH-β-CD, which can effectively adsorb bisphenol A (BPA) in water. A longer chemical chain was grafted by β-CD through the pre-modification, which effectively reduced the steric hindrance of further grafting reaction and made the grafting degree of β-CD on PP fabric higher. In addition, the adsorption mass transfer resistance of fabrics with different grafting degrees was calculated according to non-equilibrium thermodynamics to explore the effect of grafting degree on adsorption. The characterization results confirmed the successful preparation of PP-g-MAH-β-CD. The theoretical maximum saturated adsorption capacity of PP-g-MAH-β-CD was 146.55 mg/g. PP-g-MAH-β-CD was easy to recycle, and the adsorption capacity did not decrease significantly after 15 cycles of adsorption and desorption experiments.

The discharge of lead and cadmium wastewater, along with the pollution caused by phosphogypsum, represents a particularly urgent environmental issue. This study employed a straightforward hydrothermal method to convert phosphogypsum into porous calcium silicate hydrate (P-CSH), which was then used to remove and recover Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of P-CSH for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were notably high at 989.3 mg/g and 290.3 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Due to identical adsorption sites on P-CSH for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), competitive interaction occurred when both ions were present simultaneously. Additionally, the adsorption efficacy was minimally impacted by the presence of common coexisting cations in wastewater. The dominant mechanisms for removing Pb(II) and Cd(II) via P-CSH were chemical precipitation and surface complexation. Moreover, the adsorbed heavy metals were efficiently separated and reclaimed from the wastewater through a stepwise desorption process. The primary components of the residue from stepwise desorption were quartz and amorphous SiO2. Following dissolution via pressurized alkaline leaching, this residue could be recycled for synthesizing P-CSH. This research offered a new strategy for the resourceful use of phosphogypsum and heavy metal wastewater.

Pd-based catalysts exhibit higher catalytic activity and durability in many electrochemical reactions. However, the electrochemical performance can be further enhanced by fine-tune of the alloy composition. Although binary alloys have been fully studied, the multicomponent alloys are far beyond understanding, which leaves cocktail effect a compromised explanation for the high-entropy alloy. Herein Pd nanosheet-seeded growth was used to synthesize a Pd-Zn-Cd ternary alloy by accurately controlling the Pd-Zn-Cd molar ratio through adjusting the amount of introduced Cd precursor. Through analysis of the crystal phase structure of PdCdZn x and PdZn x Cd 1− x , the competitive relationship of Zn and Cd in the alloying process with Pd was unveiled: Pd 1 Cd 1 intermetallics (IMC) is thermodynamically favored over Pd 1 Zn 1 IMC in the ternary system. However, the increased structure stability of PdCd over PdZn does not bring about increased durability in the catalytic ethanol oxidation reaction. The morphology selection of Pd seeds is also crucial for the study, as Pd cubes, Pd tetrahedrons, and Pd octahedrons do not form PdZn in the same protocol. The successful alloying through the seeded growth depends on the maximum diffusion depth of foreign atoms into the seed.

Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics, one of the leading environmental pollutants, have ecotoxic effects that can accumulate through ecosystems and harm human health. The determination of FQs is still difficult due to the complex matrix, many interfering factors, and low concentration. Hence, a magnetic microporous organic network (MON) composite denoted as Fe3O4@MON-NH2@CM-β-CD with excellent FQ adsorption performance was prepared by β-CD covalent modification of a MON. Based on the existence of π–π packing, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding between Fe3O4@MON-NH2@CM-β-CD and FQs, a new magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method for the enrichment of FQs was developed. Under optimized MSPE conditions, five FQs were detected by HPLC-UV with good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9989) in the range of 0.02–1 μg mL−1, and detection limits (S/N = 3) in the range of 0.0014–0.0023 μg mL−1. The satisfactory recoveries ranged from 93.1 to 116.2% with RSDs lower than 8.39% when applied to actual environmental water samples. These results revealed that Fe3O4@MON-NH2@CM-β-CD as an adsorbent for MSPE had excellent performance for FQ extraction from real samples, and the MON material types were expanded through the functionalization of MONs, which would have great potential for further application in various analytical methods.

Baicalin is a principal component of traditional Chinese medicine and plays a crucial role in treating conditions such as arthritis, respiratory tract infections, chronic and acute hepatitis, and tumors. Graphene oxide is bonded to silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) through covalent bonds or hydrogen bonds and then reduced to SiO 2 @rGO through hydrazine hydrate to solve the problem of easy accumulation of SiO 2 and improve the conductivity of the material. Next, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) self-assembles on SiO 2 @rGO to form a stable inclusion complex. The hydrophobic inner cavity of β-CD can effectively accommodate various guest molecules to form inclusion complexes, enhancing molecular recognition and detection capabilities. Finally, β-CD/SiO 2 @rGO is bridged and surface-loaded between clay-like Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXenes) nanosheets through electrostatic interactions to form a stable three-dimensional composite material. It is precisely because of MXenes, due to their unique layered microstructure, excellent conductivity, and extensive hydrophilic surface area, that they are conducive to self-assembly or embedding nanoparticles in aqueous solution. The composite was characterized via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Under optimized conditions, the electrochemical sensor constructed from this composite exhibited a broad detection range (0.008–10 μM) and a low detection limit (0.191 nM) for baicalin. In comparison to existing methods for detecting baicalin, this approach demonstrates strong anti-interference capabilities and stability. It can efficiently, sensitively, and accurately quantify baicalin in Chinese patent medicine samples, including Scutellaria baicalensis root, Shuanghuanglian oral liquid, and Bear Bile Scutellaria baicalensis eye drops, achieving a satisfactory recovery rate. This study introduces a novel approach for the electrochemical detection of baicalin.

Aquaculture organisms may accumulate metals to induce health risks. Compared with the focus on total contents, chemical-specific risk assessment makes reasonable but is rare. Herein, we elucidated occurrence of twelve metal compounds in shrimp and fish (edible muscle, one of major metal-containing and generally targeted organs), water, sediment, and feedstuff from two aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province (one of the major aquatic production and consumption areas). We detected Cd(II) (0.6 −71.4 μg kg –1 in 100 % prawn but 63 % fish), methylmercury (MeHg, 0.5 −7.1 μg kg –1 in 100 % fish but 61 % shrimp), Pb(II) (0.4 −1.0 μg kg –1 in 57 % fish and 39 % prawn), and trimethyltin and triethyltin (0.4 −0.7 μg kg –1 ), which were much lower than the maximum limits in China. Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) up to 0.38 mg kg –1 were main contaminants in sediment while Cd(II) and Pb(II) up to 0.44 mg kg –1 were major contaminants in feedstuff compared with Cd(II), Sn(II), Hg(II), and Pb(II) majored in water at ng L –1 levels. Ecological risks were low in water but high for tributyltin in sediment. Additionally, light bioaccumulation of Cd(II) from sediment for prawn and methylmercury from feedstuff/sediment for crucian and bighead carp was induced. We also found light health risk of triethyl- and trimethyl lead, and Cd(II) (to children) associated with fish/shrimp consumption (edible muscle). This study proved high necessity of chemical-specific assessment, and shall trigger increasing interest to more metallic compounds in a wide range of uncultured and cultured plants and animals.

With the development of industry, the scarcity of lithium resources is becoming increasingly prominent. Therefore, the development of high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes for lithium extraction from salt lakes has become crucial. Herein, β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) and amino-rich graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ) sol were uniformly mixed to form β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 , which was then mixed with polyetherimide (PEI) monomer and subjected to interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on a 0.22 μm microfiltration (MF) membrane to prepare the PEI-(β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 )/TMC composite NF membrane. Through thin plate theory and gradient operation pressure filtration tests, it was found that the composite NF membrane prepared on the MF membrane substrate was not only defect-free but also exhibited superior compression resistance. In Li + /Mg 2+ filtration tests, the PEI-(β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 )/TMC membrane showed superior NF performance, with a Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity coefficient of 38.85 and a permeability of 8.91 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . This was attributed to the effect of β-CD@g-C 3 N 5 , which could thin the separation layer, slightly enlarge and more uniformly distribute the pores, increase hydrophilicity, and enhance positive charge; meanwhile, the cavity structure provided by β-CD helped to effectively separate Li + /Mg 2+ . Furthermore, under conditions of mixed salt solutions with different Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratios and 80 h of continuous filtration, the membrane exhibited excellent stability. This work introduces innovative membrane materials and design concepts to the field of lithium extraction via NF, potentially paving the way for the industrial application of NF technology.

In this study, we examined the aging characteristics of polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics (MPs), examining the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms concerning Cd(II) and Cr(VI) under both single and binary systems. The results revealed that aging treatment changed the physicochemical properties of MPs. The aging mechanisms of PLA and PE MPs were shown to be similar by the 2D-FTIR-COS study. These mechanisms involve the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups through the combination of carbon chain breakdown and oxygen. Aged MPs had a greater ability to adsorb metal ions than pristine MPs, with PLA MPs outperforming PE MPs. After 30 days of aging, Cd(II) adsorption increased by 40.61 % and 25.49 % for PE and PLA MPs, respectively, while Cr(VI) adsorption increased by 37.50 % and 69.29 %, respectively. The adsorption ability of PE and PLA MPs with Cd(II) or Cr(VI) under binary systems was less than that under single systems, with Cd(II) exhibiting more adsorption competitiveness than Cr(VI). Humic acid (HA), ionic species and strength , solution pH, and adsorption of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) were found to be significantly correlated. Further investigation into the adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) on PE and PLA MPs revealed that pore-filling, electrostatic interactions , complexation, and hydrogen bonding play important roles in the adsorption process . The study's conclusions are crucial for assessing the risk associated with concurrent contamination by metal ions and microplastics.
