Simultaneous enhancement of red emission and densification in spark-plasma-sintered YAG: Ce transparent ceramics via Si3N4 additive

Ziqiang Jiang,Laian Sheng,Jingtian Li,Guodong Sun,Weihua Luo,Peng Zhao

In present work, Ce 3 + -doped Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG: Ce) transparent ceramics were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Si 3 N 4 as a multifunctional sintering additive. The effects of Si 3 N 4 on the microstructure, densification behavior, and luminescent properties were systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that Si 3 N 4 could be effectively incorporated into the YAG lattice through a charge-balanced substitution mechanism in which Si 4+ -N 3- pairs replace Al 3+ -O 2- , resulting in a significant redshift of the Ce 3+ emission from 545 nm to 582 nm due to enhanced crystal field splitting and nephelauxetic effects. Furthermore, the substitution process also yields in-situ formation of SiO 2 , which promotes densification via liquid-phase sintering, achieves a relative density exceeding 99.5 %, and partially mitigates carbon contamination. When applied in phosphor-converted white LEDs, the Si 3 N 4 -doped YAG: Ce ceramics enabled a substantial reduction in correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4903 K to 3196 K, demonstrating their potential as efficient warm-white light converters without requiring additional red phosphors.

Ultra-Deep Oxidative Desulfurization of Fuel with H2O2 Catalyzed by Mesoporous Silica-Supported Molybdenum Oxide Modified by Ce

Yang Chen,Qi Tian,Yongsheng Tian,Jiawei Cui,Guanghui Wang

A mesoporous silica-supported molybdenum oxide catalyst with a cerium(Ce) modifier was prepared by in situ synthesis and used in a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) system for the desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), benzothiophene (BT), and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) fuel oils. The catalytic performance of the catalyst was studied. The catalyst was characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunner−Emmet−Teller (BET), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The influences ofm(catalyst)/m(fuel oil),v(H2O2)/v(fuel oil), reaction temperature, and reaction time were investigated. The catalyst had excellent catalytic oxidation desulfurization performance under moderate operational conditions. The catalytic performance was in the order DBT > 4,6-DMDBT > BT. The kinetic analysis results showed that the reaction was a pseudo first-order kinetics process and the apparent activation energies of DBT, BT, and 4,6-DMDBT were 46.67 kJ/mol, 56.23 kJ/mol, and 55.54 kJ/mol, respectively. The reaction products of DBT, BT, and 4,6-DMDBT were DBTO2, BTO2, and 4,6-DMDBTO2, respectively. The recycling experiments indicated that DBT, BT, and 4,6-DMDBT removal could still reach levels of 94.0%, 63.0%, and 77.9% after five cycles.

Preparation and Characterization of Cu-Mn-Ce@γ-Al2O3 to Catalyze Ozonation in Coal Chemical Wastewater-Biotreated Effluent

Yue Teng,Ke Yao,Wenbin Song,Yongjun Sun,Haoliang Liu,Zhiying Liu,Yanhua Xu

Cu-Mn-Ce@γ-Al2O3was prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and used to catalyze ozonation in a coal chemical wastewater-biotreated effluent. The preparation factors that considerably affected the catalytic performance of Cu-Mn-Ce@γ-Al2O3, specifically metal oxide loading percentage, calcination temperature, and calcination time, were examined. The catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The optimal catalytic ozonation operating parameters, such as ozone dosage, catalyst dosage, pH, and reaction time, were also investigated. Results showed that an optimized catalyst consisted of 17.0% CuO, 3.0% MnO2, and 2.0% CeO2(wt.%). The optimal calcination temperature and calcination time were 600 °C and 5 h. The optimal catalytic ozonation operating parameters, including ozone dosage, catalyst dosage, pH, and reaction time, were 7, 80.0 mg/L, 20.0 mg/L, 7 and 50 min, respectively. The COD removal of biotreated effluent increased to 61% under these optimal operating conditions. Meanwhile, ozonation alone resulted in only 20% removal. This work proposes the use of easily available Cu-Mn-Ce@γ-Al2O3catalyst and might drive the advancement of catalytic ozonation for chemical wastewater purification. Keywords:catalyst;catalytic ozonation;coal chemical wastewater;advanced treatment

Ce- and La-doped polymetallic layered double hydroxides for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance at high current density

Kimaka P. Rinel R.,Wang Ping,He Miao,Meng Senyao,Yao Jiasai,Li Huawei,Yang Cheng,Li Zhenxing

Polymetallic layered double hydroxides are promising cost-effective catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their versatile anionic and cationic tunability. Nevertheless, several challenges persist, notably, issues related to low electrical conductivity, poor catalytic activity, and stability, especially at high current density. Herein, we report the design of Ce- and La-doped CoNiFe-layered double hydroxide (CeLaCoNiFe-LDH) nanosheets through a facile and scalable in situ self-assembly strategy that displays enhanced OER activity. Experimental and theoretical investigations provide insights into the impact of Ce-and La-doping by comparing CeCoNiFe-LDH, LaCoNiFe-LDH, and pristine CoNiFe-LDH, all synthesized using the same methodology. These results reveal that doping Ce 3+ and La 3+ into CoNiFe-LDH substantially improves its electronic structure, resulting in enhanced conductivity, more oxygen vacancies (Vo), electron interaction, and active site formation. Consequently, significantly reduced overpotentials of 175, 314, and 424 mV at 10, 100, and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, and a highly stable current density of 120 h in 1 M KOH were achieved. Notably, these performance metrics surpass those of unmodified LDHs and are competitive with many lanthanide-doped transition metal-based LDH electrocatalysts, as well as noble metal catalysts like ruthenium catalysts. This work represents a pioneering effort in doping Ce 3+ and La 3+ ions into a functional CoNiFe-based electrocatalyst, offering inspiring OER performance and scalability potential.

Phase tailoring and temperature-induced phase evolution of SrZP-(Ce, Nd, Sm)PO4 dual-phase ceramic waste forms

Qing Tao,Junxia Wang,Jin Wang,Xi Zhang,Yuan Liu,Die Liu,Kunqi Liu

In this study, a series of (1- x )Sr 0.5 Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 - x (Ce 1-2 y Nd y Sm y )PO 4 (abbreviated as SrZP-(Ce, Nd, Sm)PO 4 , x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1; y = 0, 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 4/12, 5/12, 6/12) dual-phase ceramic waste forms were fabricated through a one-step microwave sintering technique. The phase evolution, micromorphology, and densification behavior of these ceramics were systematically investigated using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, and density measurement. The results confirmed that the dual-phase ceramics exclusively consisted of SrZP and (Ce, Nd, Sm)PO 4 phases, which coexisted stably and independently, enabling simultaneously effective immobilization of simulated fission products (Sr 2+ ) and actinides radionuclides (Ce 3+ , Nd 3+ , and Sm 3+ ). The ceramics exhibited a homogeneous distribution of both phases, a compact micromorphology, and relative densities achieving a maximum of 98.9%. It was demonstrated that alterations in the phase content ( x value) induced only negligible variations in the lattice parameters of both crystalline phases, indicating minimal structural perturbations. Rietveld refinement analysis revealed a gradual reduction in the lattice parameters of the (Ce, Nd, Sm)PO 4 phase with increasing y value, consistent with the anticipated immobilization of the simulated actinide radionuclides. In addition, by integrating XRD and Raman analyses, the temperature-induced phase evolution of the representative sample SrZP-Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 was comprehensively characterized. The results indicated that the Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 phase preferentially formed over the SrZP phase during the dual-phase ceramic preparation. Furthermore, the Kissinger model based on TG-DSC results at various heating rates ( β T = 10, 15, 20, and 25 K/min) provided additional thermodynamic evidence, in which the Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 phase possessed a lower apparent activation energy (353.35 kJ/mol) than the SrZP phase (501.33 kJ/mol). Besides, the SrZP-Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 dual-phase ceramic waste form demonstrated high chemical stability, with normalized leaching rates of all elements remaining relatively low ( LR Sr ∼ 10 −4 g·m −2 ·d −1 , LR Ce ∼ 10 −7 g·m −2 ·d −1 , LR Nd ∼ 10 −7 g·m −2 ·d −1 , and LR Sm ∼ 10 −6 g·m −2 ·d −1 ).

Construction of Hierarchical Rod-Assembled Ce–Al–La–MOFs@PPy Composites for Highly Efficient Fluoride Removal from Water

Xin Lin,Jiayi Tu,Jinyun Zhao,Fangfang Wu,Xingping Fu,Hao Lin,Jiapeng Hu

In this study, a hierarchical rod-assembled, polypyrrole-modified Ce–Al–La trimetallic metal–organic framework (Ce–Al–La–MOFs@PPy) composite was successfully synthesized through a solvothermal method combined with in situ polymerization for efficient fluoride removal from aqueous solutions. The incorporation of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) into the multimetallic MOFs effectively enhanced the structural stability, surface properties, and adsorption performance of the material. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the optimal metal-to-ligand molar ratio was 3:1, and the prepared adsorbent exhibited excellent fluoride removal performance under weakly acidic conditions (pH = 5). The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model reached 216.92 mg·g−1at 45 °C. Adsorption kinetics were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the adsorption process was mainly governed by chemisorption. Mechanism investigations based on FTIR and XPS analyses demonstrated that fluoride removal mainly occurred through electrostatic attraction and coordination exchange between fluoride ions and the Ce/La active sites. In addition, the composite exhibited good selectivity, anti-interference ability toward coexisting ions, and satisfactory fluoride removal performance in practical industrial wastewater. These findings suggest that Ce–Al–La–MOFs@PPy is a promising adsorbent for efficient fluoride-contaminated wastewater treatment.

Carbon sphere-anchored Co-Ce bimetallic oxides with engineered oxygen vacancies enable efficient catalytic ozonation for water purification

Zhu Liang,Ming Gao,Songsong Zhi,Mingming Zhang,Shuyi Hu,Tianjiao Xue,Yaxuan Wang,Xinyi Gou,Pei Wang,Kaimin Shih,Chitou Lei,Hao Wang,Xiao-yan Li,Lin Lin

Catalytic ozonation can remove persistent organic micropollutants from water, but its efficiency is limited by how effectively catalysts convert ozone into reactive oxidants while remaining stable under aqueous conditions. Here, we report a carbon-sphere-mediated interfacial engineering strategy for Co-Ce bimetallic oxides with tunable oxygen vacancies. By adjusting carbon loading, the catalyst balances oxide accessibility, defect-associated surface oxygen species, and interfacial electronic coupling. The optimized Co 4 Ce 6 O x-δ @CS-1.6 catalyst achieved complete atrazine removal within 9 min and 53.4% total organic carbon reduction within 30 min, with an apparent rate constant of 0.426 min -1 , 10.9 times higher than single ozonation and 9.3 times higher than the parent Co-Ce oxide. Multitechnique characterization showed that the carbon coupling improved oxide dispersion and modulated Co/Ce redox states while maintaining high structural stability at Co active sites after ozonation. This electronic tuning driven by carbon integration shifted ozone activation from a molecular pathway on parent Co 4 Ce 6 O x to a vacancy-assisted dissociative pathway forming surface-bound *O on Co 4 Ce 6 O x-δ @CS-1.6. The resulting system promotes radical-mediated oxidation dominated by •OH and •O 2 - -related pathways, driving atrazine through dealkylation, dechlorination, hydroxylation, and further oxidation with an overall decrease in predicted aquatic toxicity. The catalyst also enables atrazine removal from real pesticide wastewater, removes diverse micropollutants, and improves COD reduction in real water matrices, highlighting oxide-carbon interfacial defect engineering as a promising route for ozone-based water purification under complex aqueous conditions. Fe/Ce Dual-Atom Engineering to Break the Activity-Stability Trade-Off for Ultra-Stable Zinc-Air Batteries

Junbin Li,Jiaqi Tang,Jingwen Ma,Zhijun Zhang,Xiang Li

To address the stability limitations of conventional Fe─N─C catalysts caused by H 2 O 2 byproducts and reactive oxygen species (ROS), an innovative dual-metal single-atom synergistic strategy is developed, resulting in the fabrication of a hierarchically porous hollow carbon fiber catalyst co-anchored with Fe and Ce dual-atom sites (FeCe DAC/HCNF). The catalyst features an interconnected network of hollow channels and carbon nanocages, forming a hierarchical micro/mesoporous structure (specific surface area: 935.24 m 2 g −1 ) that enhances mass transport efficiency and maximizes exposure of active sites. The dual-atom site is developed to achieve a “kill two birds with one stone” effect: Ce single-atom sites adjacent to Fe centers not only effectively scavenge ROS and decompose H 2 O 2 , but also modulate the Fe centers, thereby synergistically enhancing the intrinsic ORR activity while mitigating carbon matrix degradation. The FeCe DAC/HCNF catalyst exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance and stability in both alkaline and acidic media. When integrated into zinc-air batteries, it achieves superior device performance compared to Fe─N─C catalysts, with a remarkable cycling durability of 2300 cycles (∼1100 h of stable operation). This work breaks the traditional activity-stability trade-off of catalysts, providing a novel pathway for developing high-durability zinc-air batteries.

Structural evolution and dielectric properties of (Ce, Mg, Ca)-co-doped BaTiO3 ceramics for potential X8R capacitor applications

Baoyong Huang,Xiuyun Zhang,Jianwei Song,Yijie Zeng,Yuyang Tang,Yiqi Sang,Yunyun Zhao,Guisheng Zhu,Laijun liu,Huarui Xu

The microstructure engineering of BaTiO 3 -based ceramic systems serves as an essential prerequisite to attain superior dielectric stability and reliability in modern multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). In this study, the effects of Ca doping on phase composition, microstructure, defect evolution, and dielectric temperature stability were systematically investigated in a novel BaTiO 3 -1 at%CeO 2 -3 at%MgO- x at%CaCO 3 ( x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) ceramic system. The results show that Ca doping promotes the tetragonality of the structure to increase first and then decrease. The addition of Ca 2+ changed the original defect composition of the ceramics: Ca 2+ promotes the conversion of Ce 3+ to Ce 4+ , reduces the reduction of Ti 4+ , and regulates the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The addition of Ca 2+ reduces the grain boundary activation energy ( 1.86 eV to 1.33 eV ), and reduces the carrier concentration to improve the ceramic resistivity. Ca 2+ promotes the enrichment of doped ions at the grain boundary to form a ' core-shell ' structure, which is characterized by broadened and suppressed dielectric peaks. When x = 6 at %, the ceramics meet the X8R specification (|( C T - C 25°C )/ C 25°C ×100%| ≤ 15%, T ∈ [-55°C, 150°C]), the dielectric constant at room temperature is 2802, and the dielectric loss is less than 0.02. This study reveals the Ca 2+ induced multi-ion synergistic regulation mechanism, which provides an experimental basis for the development of high stability and low loss lead-free MLCC dielectric materials that meet the X8R standard.

Preparation of Ce-doped CdS nanomaterials and mechanism study on their enhanced gas-sensing performance toward n-butanol

Yiao Xu,Xingtai Chen,Yujun Guo,Jiayi Qu,Changsheng Ji,Davoud Dastan,Zhigang Li,Xiaoming Tan,Feifei Wang,Xiaoning Wang,Xi-Tao Yin

First report of Ce-doped CdS nanomaterials as n-butanol sensors. • Sensor exhibits a maximum response value of 224.2 at 50 ppm n-butanol. • Sensor demonstrates extremely fast response/recovery times for n-butanol. • Sensor exhibits excellent selectivity toward n-butanol. • Possesses outstanding long-term stability. Ce-doped CdS nanomaterials were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Various characterization techniques confirmed the successful substitution of Cd sites in the CdS lattice by Ce ions. Gas-sensing tests demonstrated that at an optimal Ce doping level of 1 at%, the sensor exhibited an outstanding response of 224.2–50 ppm n-butanol at 175 ℃, which is approximately 3.5 times higher than that of pristine CdS. Meanwhile, it displayed excellent response/recovery characteristics (14 s/10 s). Furthermore, the sensor showed superior selectivity toward n-butanol, with a negligible response to benzene gas. Mechanism analysis revealed that the abundant sulfur vacancies induced by Ce doping, along with the multivalent redox catalytic effect of Ce ions, are the key factors contributing to the significant enhancement of gas-sensing performance. Tailoring Fe–Nx electronic structure via Ce-based active oxygen inhibitor for enhanced oxygen reduction activity and stability

Yujie Sun,Daijie Deng,Chaozhong Guo,Rong Hu,Yimin Chen,Huiyan Cao,Zhiyuan Cui,Rong Jin,Yao Liu,Yujun Si,Quan Xu

The development of highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is crucial for the advancement of zinc-air batteries. A dual-ligand stepwise preordination strategy is employed to synthesize the Fe–Ce bimetallic carbon-based catalyst (Ce/Fe–NC) with abundant Fe–N x /Ce–N x sites and Fe 3 O 4 , and a hierarchical micropore-mesopore structure. The introduction of Ce-related species significantly modulates the electronic structure of Fe sites, which is consistent with possible d–f orbital hybridization and d -band center regulation of Fe. Such electronic effect reduces the ORR energy barrier and endows Ce/Fe–NC with a half-wave potential of 0.875 V. The prepared CeO 2 with a fast Ce 3 + /Ce 4+ redox couple efficiently scavenges reactive oxygen species to inhibit the degradation of Fe–Nₓ sites and Fe 3 O 4 species, as well as the corrosion of carbon skeleton caused by Fenton reaction byproducts, ultimately enhancing the stability of the Ce/Fe–NC. After 30,000 accelerated cycles, the half-wave potential of the Ce/Fe–NC only decreases by 15 mV, and maintains a 95.4% current retention rate over 10,000 s. The zinc-air battery with Ce/Fe–NC achieves a peak power density of 230 mW cm −2 , a specific energy of 870.5 Wh kg –1 (Zn) , and a stable charge-discharge voltage gap over 100 h of cycling. This work provides a novel strategy for the preparation of high-performance non-precious metal ORR catalysts.

Synergistic effect of hydroxyl modification and transition metal doping on Cu–Ce interface for chemical looping preferential oxidation

Xixi Zhao,Pengheng Li,Min Lin,Xing Zhu

A “hydroxyl-transition metal synergistic” strategy was developed to enhance Cu-Ce oxygen carriers for chemical looping preferential oxidation (CL-PROX). Among synthesized MCuCe (M = Mn, Fe, Co) samples, MnCuCe exhibited superior performance. Mn doping strengthened strong interfacial interactions via oxygen vacancy-mediated charge compensation, yielding the highest surface Cu + (77.44%), Ce 3+ (20.94%), and oxygen vacancies (35.30%). Consequently, MnCuCe achieved >99% CO conversion at 180 °C with <3% H 2 consumption, showing no deactivation after 30 cycles. In situ FTIR verified that Cu + serves as the pivotal active site within a Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. DFT calculations confirmed that the synergistic construction of stable M−Cu + −O v −Ce 3+ sites results in the most negative CO adsorption energy (−3.00 eV). This study provides a novel paradigm for designing high-performance CL-PROX oxygen carriers.
