Fabrication of plasmonic Hollow-Cu2O/Pt nanocages with inter-embedded nanoparticles subunits heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen evolution

Bo Ma,Gailan Ma,Qian Xu,Guoqiang Huang,Hongfang Shen,Maohui Li,Dong Li,Gangli Feng,Yanmin Wang,Youjun Lu

Semiconductor-based photocatalytic technology is considered as an effective and economical approach to solve the degradation of pollutants and the generation of new energy sources. However, suboptimal utilization of solar energy and fast combination of photocarriers greatly affects the catalytic performance. In this paper, plasmonic Hollow-Cu 2 O/Pt nanocages were synthesized by a template method, which have a shell layer with inter-embedded Cu 2 O and Pt nanoparticles subunits heterojunctions. Compared to cubic Cu 2 O and Cu 2 O/Pt, the nanocages exhibit much better photocatalytic properties. 5 mg of Hollow-Cu 2 O/Pt can achieve a degradation efficiency of 91.2 % for methyl orange (20 mg/L) under near-infrared light irradiation, and 96 % for methyl orange (50 mg/L) under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the hollow-Cu 2 O/Pt nanocages offer an enhanced degradation of antibiotics and a photocatalytic hydrogen production evolution, indicating that the nanocages have potential photocatalytic applications for the degradation of different pollutants and the hydrogen evolution. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of multiple advantages, including the larger specific surface area, the closer d-band center, the multiple diffuse reflection, the LSPR effect and the enhanced local electromagnetic field. This study offers a promising strategy to optimize integrated nanocage cooperated with subunit heterostructure and LSPR effect.

Tumour microenvironment-responded Fe-doped carbon dots-sensitized cubic Cu2O for Z-scheme heterojunction-enhanced sono-chemodynamic synergistic tumor therapy

Chuanqi Feng,Lumin Wang,Dashuai Zhang,Longlong Geng,Lianwen Zhou,Ling Wang,Guanfeng Tian,Qi Tang,Jinyan Hu,Bijiang Geng,Lang Yan

The efficacy of electron-hole separation in a single sonosensitizer and the complexities of the tumor microenvironment (TME) present significant challenges to the effectiveness of sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Designing efficient sonosensitizers to enhance electron-hole separation and alleviate TME resistance is crucial yet challenging. Herein, we introduce a novel Z-scheme heterojunctions (HJs) sonosensitizer using Fe-doped carbon dots (CDs) as auxiliary semiconductors to sensitize cubic Cu 2 O (Fe-CDs@Cu 2 O) for the first time. Fe-CDs@Cu 2 O demonstrated enhanced SDT effects due to improved electron-hole separation. Additionally, the introduction of Fe ions in CDs synergistically enhances Fenton-like reactions with Cu ions in Cu 2 O, resulting in enhanced chemodynamic therapy (CDT) effects. Moreover, Fe-CDs@Cu 2 O exhibited rapid glutathione (GSH) depletion, effectively mitigating TME resistance. With high rates of 1 O 2 and OH generated by Fe-CDs@Cu 2 O, coupled with strong GSH depletion, single drug injection and ultrasound (US) irradiation effectively eliminate tumors. This innovative heterojunction sonosensitizer offers a promising pathway for clinical anti-tumor treatment.

Signal–off electrochemiluminescence immunosensor based on AgS quantum dots quenching luminol modified Ag/Cu2O/Ti3C2 nanocomposites for h–FABP detection

Xiao-Jian Li,Xinli Lu,Yunxia Wang,Zhanquan Zhang,Yongfa Zhang

This study successfully developed a highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor based on the ECL resonance energy transfer mechanism for detecting the key biomarker of acute myocardial infarction, heart–type fatty acid binding protein (h–FABP). Through the meticulous design of the Ag/Cu2O/Ti3C2 ternary nanocomposite material, this material demonstrated significant catalase–like catalytic activity, enabling the efficient decomposition of H2O2 to generate more superoxide radicals (O₂•⁻), thereby significantly enhancing the ECL signal of the luminol–H2O2 system. Notably, AgS quantum dots (AgS QDs), due to broad–spectrum ultraviolet absorption overlapping with the ECL emission spectrum of luminol, triggered an efficient energy resonance transfer effect, resulting in the decrease of ECL intensity. NH2–MIL–101(Fe) was utilized to couple with AgS QDs (AgS QDs@NH2–MIL–101(Fe)), which can further enhance the quenching efficiency. Based on this signal–off strategy, an ultrasensitive detection platform for h–FABP was successfully constructed. Experimental results indicated that the immunosensor exhibited an excellent response relationship within a wide linear range from 1.00 fg mL–1 to 100 ng mL–1, and a low detection limit reached 0.36 fg mL–1 (S/N = 3). This study provides an innovative methodological approach for ultra–trace detection of myocardial injury markers and demonstrates significant application potential in early clinical diagnosis.

Z-scheme Cu2O/g-C3N4/Ag heterostructures: A novel approach for simultaneous water pollutant removal and real-time SERS monitoring

Kaiyue Li,Wenhui Li,Ping Huang,Yuquan Zhuo,Ziwen Yang,Bo Wang,Runru Liu,Bing Liu,Enzhu Hou,Shuo Yang,Donglai Han

To address the challenge of achieving simultaneous pollutant removal and real-time monitoring in water remediation, Z-scheme Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag heterostructures with integrated functionalities for synergistic adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection were developed—hereafter referred to as APS-Hs (adsorption–photocatalysis–SERS heterostructures). Particular emphasis was placed on the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs, incorporating an optimized 1.5 wt% Ag loading. Optical and electrochemical tests demonstrated that the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs significantly enhanced charge separation efficiency and reduced charge transfer resistance. Under visible-light irradiation, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs attained a removal efficiency of 98.1 % for methyl orange (MO) within 45 min and sustained an efficiency of 84.0 % after three consecutive cycles. XRD and SEM analyses conducted before and after photocatalytic cycling confirmed the composite's outstanding structural and morphological stability. Notably, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity (21.34 mg/g) among all samples. Zeta potential measurements revealed a surface charge reversal from + 22.35 mV to −10.29 mV, indicative of strong electrostatic interactions with anionic pollutants. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic modeling (R 2 =0.971) further established physisorption as the dominant mechanism. Radical trapping experiments verified that the enhanced photocatalytic performance originates from the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. Additionally, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs substrate achieved a SERS enhancement factor of 3.1 × 10 6 and a broadband self-cleaning capability, underscoring its potential for integrated environmental remediation and sensing applications.

Efficient large-current conversion of CO2 to C2H5OH via a *CO-*OCH2 coupling pathway on alkanethiol-modified Cu2O array electrode

Min Zhang,Weimin Wang,Jun Li,Xun Zhu,Qian Fu

Developing advanced electrocatalysts to convert CO 2 into liquid fuels such as C 2 H 5 OH is critical for utilizing intermittent renewable energy. The formation of C 2 H 5 OH, however, is generally less favored compared with the other hydrocarbon products from Cu-based electrocatalysts. In this work, an alkanethiol-modified Cu₂O nanowire array (OTT-Cu₂O) was constructed with asymmetric Cu sites consisting of paired Cu–O and Cu–S motifs to overcome previous limitations of C 2 H 5 OH electrosynthesis via CO 2 RR pathway. This catalyst achieves a high Faradaic efficiency of 45% for CO 2 -to-C 2 H 5 OH conversion at 300 mA/cm 2 , representing a more than two-fold enhancement over the Cu 2 O electrode. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the Cu–S site exhibits distinct C-binding capability that stabilizes key intermediates (*OCH 2 and *CO), in contrast to the O-affinitive Cu–O site. The asymmetric S–Cu–O configuration promotes thermodynamically favorable asymmetric C–C coupling between *CO and *OCH 2 , forming the critical CO–OCH₂ intermediate and facilitating C 2 H 5 OH production, as opposed to symmetric O–Cu–O sites that mainly generate HCOOH. This work offers an effective strategy for designing multi-active-site catalysts toward highly selective CO₂ reduction to C 2 H 5 OH and provides fundamental insight into the reaction mechanism.

The Effect of g-C3N4 in Its Composite With Cu-Cu2O on the Catalysis of Aerobic Oxidation of Benzylic Alcohols

Yongguang Wang,Yi Pei,Siqi Hu,Chunxin Lu,Wei Zhong,Zhiyin Xiao,Junjie Wang,Xiaoming Liu

In this work, the preparation and characterization of a composite of Cu-Cu 2 O with g-C 3 N 4 and its application in the catalysis of aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols are reported. The composites Cu-Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 were prepared starting with CuSO 4 under reduction conditions with ball milling, followed by thermal treatment. The introduction of g-C 3 N 4 into the composite can enhance the catalytic oxidation. Band structure analysis based on UPS data reveals that the enhancement can be attributed to the small work function of g-C 3 N 4 , which raises the VBM level of the chief catalyst Cu 2 O through injecting electrons into the oxide at the heterojunction due to Fermi energy alignment. Both VBM ascending and forming an internal electric field (IEF) due to the electron transfer across the interface contribute to the enhancement in the catalysis. Further, the N-rich matrix g-C 3 N 4 promotes proton transfer in the catalysis due to its basicity, which also accelerates the catalysis.

Near-infrared responsive magnetic photocatalyst based on NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 for the efficient degradation of organic contaminants

Yuangong Ma,Wensheng Zhang,Zhifang Wu,Zhishan Liang,Youlin Huang,Qingmei Tan,Tianren Liu,Dongxue Han,Li Niu

In the realm of photocatalysis, effectively utilizing solar energy, especially the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, presents substantial challenges. To tackle this issue, a novel composite of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 (denoted as NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4) was ingeniously fabricated and assessed for the photodegradation of organic contaminants. By harnessing the distinct properties of upconversion materials, narrow bandgap semiconductors, and magnetic substances, the NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 catalyst possesses a photodegradation rate of 92% for the rhodamine B dye under NIR light radiation, which is superior to NYE@Cu2O (50%) and NYE@Cu2O@MoS2 (85%). The enhanced performance in the near-infrared photocatalysis of NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of various components, which promotes an increase in photo-induced carrier generation and facilitates their efficient transfer and energy utilization under NIR irradiation. This study provides a possible route for the near-infrared photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in areas with limited light or even dark conditions.

Adjusting the Cu valent state in CeO2 nanorods loaded with Cu2O for controlling the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to methane

Lingwei Yu,Leyi Zhou,Qi Guo,Hongchuan Zhang,Xi Xiao,Ruixue Zhao,Zifeng Yan,Ying Zhang

The challenge of converting carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) electroreduction into high value-added products is to obtain highly selective electrocatalysts. Research has shown that cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) effectively facilitates the activation of CO 2 and suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. However, during the process of electrochemical reduction, the valence state of Cu 2 O is prone to transformation. Herein, a series of Cu 2 O–CeO 2 -X catalysts (X represents different amounts of CeO 2 added) by applying Cu 2 O onto Cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) nanorods were synthesized via the impregnation method and used as electrocatalysts. We found that the Faradaic efficiency of methane (FE-CH 4 ) for Cu 2 O–CeO 2 -2 reached 65.1 % at −1.6 V vs. RHE, exceeding many catalysts previously reported. From the Cu LMM Auger spectra, it was found that the valence state of Cu species in Cu 2 O–CeO 2 -2 is mainly Cu 0 (accounting for 93.39 %), while in Cu 2 O–CeO 2 -3, the proportion of Cu 0 is 56.34 %. This indicates that CeO 2 has a regulatory effect on the valence state of Cu species. Additionally, we observed the valence state of Cu in Cu 2 O–CeO 2 -2 after the CO 2 reduction reaction and found that the proportion of Cu 0 changed little (94.97 %), which proves that CeO 2 plays a role in stabilizing the valence state of Cu. Research has demonstrated that Cu 0 can adsorb the ∗CO intermediate on its surface, followed by a hydrogenation reaction to generate CH 4 (∗CO + H +  + e − → ∗CHO). Copper-based catalysts in which Cu 0 dominates among the Cu species are conducive to the conversion of CO 2 into CH 4 . In situ ATR-SEIRAS spectra confirmed the presence of key intermediates such as ∗CHO and explored the formation pathway of CH 4 (CO 2 → ∗COOH → ∗CO → ∗CHO → ∗OCH 2 → CH 4 ). This study provides a new way to design efficient copper oxide-based catalysts for CO 2 electroreduction by adjusting and stabilizing the ratio of copper valence state reasonably.

Efficient mineralisation and disinfection of neonicotinoid pesticides with unique ZnAl-LDH intercalation structure and synergistic effect of Cu2O crystalline surface

Jiangfu Zheng,Changzheng Fan,Xiaoming Li,Qi Yang,Dongbo Wang,Abing Duan,Shuaijun Pan

Photocatalysts based on crystallographic effects and visible light-driven tunable nanostructures have been confirmed as a novel, scalable, and easy-to-implement technology. The hydrothermal reaction serves as the main method of synthesis for its novelty, becoming a viable alternative to other complex physical and chemical processes. In this study, hydrothermal conditions' parameters were set for nanostructured Cu 2 O/ZnAl-LDH photocatalysts. The nanostructured I-scheme Cu 2 O/ZnAl-LDH photocatalysts were prepared with an intercalated morphology. The prepared photocatalysts became the most effective photocatalyst for mineralizing and degrading nitenpyram solution, achieved nearly complete degradation and exceptionally high mineralization values (>40%) after 210 min of reaction, and exerted some ex vivo antibacterial, sterilising effects and potential for treating waste leachate (removal = 78%). The synergistic effect of Cu 2 O/ZnAl-LDH with both crystalline surface effect and intercalation structure can lead to reusability, high stability, versatility, and excellent photocatalytic performance in mineralize neonicotinoid pesticides.

Adsorption-photocatalytic synergistic reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of Congo red by aminated cellulose-Cu2O composites under visible light

Wen Li,Haohu Li,Yaohong Yang,Li Liu,Peng Wang,Linkun Xie,Xijuan Chai,Kaimeng Xu,Guanben Du,Lianpeng Zhang

s The presence of substantial quantities of heavy metals and organic substances in industrial wastewater poses a risk to the wellbeing of flora and fauna if released straight into the environment. Consequently, processing the wastewater prior to its release into the environment is essential. While adsorbents are capable of efficiently capturing pollutants from wastewater, the management of these pollutants post-absorption remains a concern for researchers. Photocatalytic methods are capable of breaking degradation or reduction pollutants, and cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) has been shown to be a photocatalyst that can rapidly degrade pollutants. In this research, a novel composite of aminated cellulose (AC) modified Cu 2 O (AC-Cu) was prepared. We found that -NH 2 on the AC could make AC stably adsorbed on the surface of Cu 2 O on the one hand, and on the other hand, -NH 2 could adsorb pollutants to the vicinity of the material, which could accelerate the photocatalytic rate. This composite was able to achieve a synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic effect, enhanced the degradation rates of Cr 6+ (Cr(VI)) and Congo red (CR) by 2.4-fold and 2.3-fold, respectively, compared with that of pure Cu 2 O under 10 W of blue light irradiation. The AC-Cu composites also performed well in the cycling experiments, and after 5 uses of the AC-Cu composites, we fund that the AC was able to effectively mitigate the photocorrosion phenomenon during the photocatalytic process and enhance the catalyst lifetime.

The synergistic effect of Ni doping on Cu/Cu2O(111) surface in aqueous phase reforming of methanol for hydrogen production

Haiping Zhu,Yuxin Ge,Pengcheng Zhao,Zihan Sun,Zhuoyu Zheng,Fan Yang,Lin Chen,Yongqi Mao,Xueer Huang,Jiajin Li,Minglei Lu,Tiejun Wang

Aqueous phase reforming of methanol (APRM) is a promising technology for efficiently producing hydrogen (H 2 ) in a sustainable approach, enabling convenient and safe H 2 storage and transportation. Herein, we develop a Ni/Cu/Cu 2 O@CA catalyst with excellent performance by integrating density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental investigations. DFT results show that Ni doping greatly reduced the activation energy (E a ) of CH 3 OH dehydrogenation and H 2 O dissociation, especially the E a of the rate-limiting step of CH 3 O∗ → CH 2 O∗ + H∗ from 1.71 eV to 1.28 eV. Additionally, the Cu/Cu 2 O(111) surface is found to promote the CO conversion. To verify the synergistic effect between Ni and Cu/Cu 2 O(111), a 3D spherical porous Ni/Cu/Cu 2 O@CA catalyst is synthesized for APRM experiments, achieving a peak H 2 production rate of 135.93 μmolH 2 /g cat /s at 240 °C, which is 2.0 times higher than that of the Cu/Cu 2 O@CA catalyst. Overall, this work presents an implementable strategy for developing non-noble metal catalysts for sustainable H 2 production.

Enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2-loaded composite oxides with different Cu–Cu2O–CuO ratios derived from CuZnAl layered double hydroxides

Zheng Meiru,Liu Ying,Qiao Peng,Wang Xueqin,Guo Xin,Zhang Mei,Zhang Jiaojing,Zhang Jianwei,Feng Fuping

Photocatalysis technologies for degrading organic pollutants have emerged as a promising strategy for environmental remediation. This study aimed to develop efficient photocatalysts by synthesizing TiO 2 -loaded composites derived from CuZnAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and assessed their performance in the decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB). CuZnAl-LDH nanosheets were synthesized via coprecipitation and then calcined at high temperatures to obtain CuZnAl layered double oxides (CZA-LDO). By varying the amount of ascorbic acid, the CuO in CZA-LDO was reduced to different extents, thereby varying the ratio of Cu, Cu 2 O and CuO. TiO 2 was then deposited on the surface. The morphology, crystal structure, bonding state, and photocatalytic performance of the composite materials were assessed. When exposed to UV light, the optimized TiO 2 /Cu–Cu 2 O–CuO–0.7 composite material achieved a degradation rate of 96.0% for RhB within 110 min, which was significantly better than TiO 2 /CZA-LDO (46.0%) and other Cu-modified samples (66.2%–77.9%). The enhanced photocatalytic properties of the prepared nanocomposite were ascribed to doping with Cu, Cu 2 O and CuO, which effectively enhanced the electron–hole pair separation efficiency. These findings demonstrate the potential of Cu-Cu 2 O-CuO-LDO-based photocatalysts as effective materials for degrading organic contaminants in environmental remediation. Graphical abstract
