Towards self-driven and enzyme-free sweat glucose photoelectrochemical sensing via decorating CuO nanoparticles on TiO2 hierarchical nanotubes

Shengchen Ke,Linling Qin,Ruoxi Zhang,Weijian Zhu,Wenxiang Lu,Lu Ma,Shaolong Wu,Xiaofeng Li

It is of great importance to develop a non-invasive and portable glucose sensor to address challenges and obstacles brought by invasive glucose sensors, such as negative physical and psychological impacts to patients during the fingertip blood collection, limited environment of use for enzyme-based electrodes, and cumbersome active-driven integrated devices. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors have great potential in this regard. In this work, self-driven and enzyme-free sweat glucose PEC sensing is realized by constructing TiO 2 hierarchical nanotubes modified by CuO nanoparticles (CuO@TiO 2 HNT). A sensitivity of 138.9 μA mM −1 cm −2 in the low concentration range (< 200 μM) and a detection limit of 0.7 μM (Signal/Noise=3) are achieved by the as-prepared CuO@TiO 2 HNT photoelectrode at relatively zero bias. The testing results for sweat glucose detection before and after meal consumption are consistent with those from commercial glucometers. The CuO@TiO 2 HNT photoelectrode works well at absolutely zero bias and in a wide temperature range (e.g., 0–60 °C). The extraordinary sensing performance can be mainly attributed to the following two factors: (1) the TiO 2 hierarchical nanotubes have an excellent light-capturing property and large specific surface area, and (2) the CuO nanoparticles substantially facilitate surface-carrier transfer for the glucose oxidation reaction. This work provides an enzyme-free sensing photoelectrode for self-driven sweat glucose detection and an alternative route to portable and noninvasive sensing of glucose.

Transition Metal (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO)-Promoted CuO-Based α-MnO2 Nanowire Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Haiou Zhang,Yixin Zhang,Huikang Song,Yan Cui,Yingying Xue,Cai-e Wu,Chao Pan,Jingxin Xu,Jian Qiu,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen

As a toxic pollutant, carbon monoxide (CO) usually causes harmful effects on human health. Therefore, the thermally catalytic oxidation of CO has received extensive attention in recent years. The CuO-based catalysts have been widely investigated due to their availability. In this study, a series of transition metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4and NiO) promoted CuO-based catalysts supported on the α-MnO2nanowire catalysts were prepared by the deposition precipitation method for catalytic CO oxidation reactions. The effects of the loaded transition metal type, the loading amount, and the calcination temperature on the catalytic performances were systematically investigated. Further catalyst characterization showed that the CuO/α-MnO2catalyst modified with 3 wt% Co3O4and calcined at 400 °C performed the highest CO catalytic activity (T90= 75 °C) among the investigated catalysts. It was supposed that the loading of the Co3O4dopant not only increased the content of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst but also increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the CuO/α-MnO2nanowire catalyst, which would further enhance the catalytic activity. The CuO/α-MnO2catalyst modified with 3 wt% NiO and calcined at 400 °C exhibited the highest surface adsorbed oxygen content and the best normalized reaction rate, but the specific surface area limited its activity. Therefore, the appropriate loading of the Co3O4modifier could greatly enhance the activity of CuO/α-MnO2. This research could provide a reference method for constructing efficient low-temperature CO oxidation catalysts. Keywords:transition metal oxides;CuO-based catalysts;Co3O4modification;α-MnO2nanowire;catalytic oxidation of CO

Lu Wang,Xin Gang,Yu Xiao,Yi Ren,Jianhong Wang,Baolong Niu,Wenfeng Li

In this study, CMCS-CuO nanoparticles were added to the SA matrix by blending method to prepare SA/CMCS-CuO composite microspheres. The chemical structure and morphology of the composite beads were characterized. The results showed that there was a certain molecular interaction between CMCS-CuO NPs and SA matrix. The swelling experiment showed that with the increase of the mass of CMCS-CuO NPs, the maximum swelling ratio of gel microspheres decreased from 49.83% to 38.2%, and the time to reach the maximum swelling ratio also increased from 8 h to 11 h. Cytotoxicity test, hemolysis test, and cell migration test showed that the composite microspheres had good biocompatibility. Curcumin was added to the composite bead matrix by the blending method, and curcumin-loaded SA/CMCS-CuO composite beads were prepared by the crosslinking method. In vitro release experiments showed that SA/CMCS-CuO composite microspheres had good pH sensitivity, and the addition of CMCS-CuO NPs prolonged the in vitro release time of cur. It has certain application potential in the field of drug release.

Syngas production modified by oxygen vacancies over CeO2-ZrO2-CuO oxygen carrier via chemical looping reforming of methane

Yajing Wang,Yane Zheng,Yuhao Wang,Kongzhai Li,Yaming Wang,Lihong Jiang,Xing Zhu,Yonggang Wei,Hua Wang

Chemical-looping reforming of methane (CLRM) offers an effective approach for the production of syngas . A series of Ce x Zr y Cu 1−x−y (x = 0.6, 0.7, y = 0–0.35) mixed oxides were successfully prepared by sol-gel method, and characterized by means of XRD , H 2 -TPR, BET, XPS , Raman and CH 4 -TPR. The addition of Cu and Zr ions caused the distortion of CeO 2 lattice and induced more oxygen vacancies , which promoted the mobility of lattice oxygen in the materials. Ce x Zr y Cu 1−x−y mixed oxides also owned smaller grain size and better thermal stability than pure CeO 2 -CuO mixed oxides. Among the series of Ce x Zr y Cu 1−x−y mixed oxides, the reducibility of Ce 0.6 Zr x Cu 0.4−x and Ce 0.7 Zr x Cu 0.3−x samples gradually increased with the Cu content. It was found that the Ce 0.7 Zr 0.2 Cu 0.1 sample owned the most abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface. The Ce x Zr y Cu 1−x−y mixed oxides with lower Cu content (≤0.1) produced higher amount of H 2 and CO while smaller CO 2 . Ce 0.7 Zr 0.2 Cu 0.1 sample still retained better structural stability and thermal stability after 20 times cycled reaction.

Synthesis of magnetic CuO/MnFe2O4 nanocompisite and its high activity for degradation of levofloxacin by activation of persulfate

Qiuling Ma,Huixuan Zhang,Xinyi Zhang,Bo Li,Ruonan Guo,Qingfeng Cheng,Xiuwen Cheng

Magnetic CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite were synthesized and characterized as a heterogeneous catalyst. Subsequently, it was used to activate persulfate (PS) for levofloxacin (LVF) removal with the operating parameters optimized. Results reveled that the sample of CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 -9% showed higher catalytic performance than pure CuO, pure MnFe 2 O 4 and other fabricated CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposites. And under the optimized conditions of 1 g·L −1 CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 -9% and PS at pH 9 and 25 °C, 91.3% of LVF could be decomposed within 120 min. Besides, the underlying mechanism of CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite activating PS was proposed by free radical quenching experiment and XPS results. Eventually, several degradation intermediates of LVF were identified and three decomposition pathways were proposed. Especially, the CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite exhibited superparamagnetic property and good stability, which favored the catalyst to be efficiently recovered through the applied magnetic field and reused from aquatic environment. Thus, the as-prepared CuO/MnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite might be applied to the removal of refractory organics in environmental remediation.

Synthesis, microstructure and characterization of ultra-low permittivity CuO–ZnO–B2O3–Li2O glass/Al2O3 composites for ULTCC application

Juan Xi,Guohua Chen,Fei Liu,Fei Shang,Jiwen Xu,Changrong Zhou,Changlai Yuan

In view of lead-free low-softening CuO–ZnO–B 2 O 3 –Li 2 O glass, novel glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites were prepared by solid-state reaction route for ultra-low temperature co-fired ceramic (ULTCC) applications. The phase evolution and compositions, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of the composites were studied by XRD , SEM and dielectric property measurement. Four phases including Cu 2 Al 6 B 4 O 17 , Li 2 CuB 4 O 8 , CuB 2 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 coexist in the glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites sintered in the range of 640–660 °C. However, the contents and types of the phases depend on the composition of the composites and firing temperature. The optimum properties with a permittivity ε r  = 3.79, a quality factor Q ×  f  = 38557 GHz (at 16.64 GHz) and a temperature coefficient of resonance frequency τ f ≈0 ppm/ o C as well as a heat conductivity λ = 1.46W(mK) −1 can be achieved for the glass/ceramic composite containing 10 wt% Al 2 O 3 sintered at 640 °C. Moreover, the composite can be co-fired compatible with Ag and Al electrodes. The as-prepared glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites are promising candidate for ULTCC application.

Efficient degradation of p-arsanilic acid with arsenic adsorption by magnetic CuO-Fe3O4 nanoparticles under visible light irradiation

Tianyi Sun,Zhiwei Zhao,Zhijie Liang,Jie Liu,Wenxin Shi,Fuyi Cui

A bifunctional CuO-Fe 3 O 4 material was synthesized and employed for the photocatalytic degradation of p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) under visible light irradiation and simultaneous removal of the released inorganic arsenic by adsorption from solution. The effects of major factors, including solution pH, bicarbonate ion, halide ion and humic acid , on the p-ASA degradation were investigated. Under various water quality conditions, an excellent removal of p-ASA could always be achieved by the CuO-Fe 3 O 4 photocatalytic process and p-ASA could be completely converted to As(V) within 36   min. Simultaneously, the released As(V) could be adsorbed onto the surface of CuO-Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with high efficiency above 95% at initial pH range from 4 to 7. The presence of humic acid significantly weakened the degradation of p-ASA by scavenging OH, and slightly inhibited the As(V) removal. On the basis of the UV–vis, FTIR, XPS analysis and the major degradation products detected, the mechanism of the p-ASA photocatalytic degradation and the released As(V) adsorption by CuO-Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was given, and the degradation pathway of p-ASA during the photocatalytic process was also taken into consideration. Combined with the photocatalytic property and the high adsorption capacity of As(V), the synthesized magnetic CuO-Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have significant potential applications for controlling the risk of p-ASA in wastewater.

Conformal sulfidation of HKUST-1 for constructing porous Cu2S/CuO octahedrons realizing highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose detection

Yanxin Liao,Shupei Sun,Qian Du,Nianfeng Shi,Guangfu Yin,Zhongbing Huang,Xiaoming Liao

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are believed to be promising precursors for constructing novel and efficient catalysts for glucose sensing. Herein, HKUST-1 precursors are first fabricated using a one-pot hydrothermal approach, and then HKUST-1 is converted into porous Cu2S/CuO octahedrons through conformal sulfidation with the help of OH− ions. The as-obtained Cu2S/CuO composite can provide rich electrochemical active sites and promoted electric transfer kinetics. Benefiting from these combined merits, the as-fabricated Cu2S/CuO composite is confirmed to be a high-performance catalyst, with high sensitivities of 8269.45 and 4140.82 μA mM−1cm−2 in the corresponding ranges of 0.05 ∼ 0.6 mM and 0.6 ∼ 1.2 mM, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared electrode materials possess good anti-interference ability, reproducibility and long-term stability. This work opens up new avenues for the design and preparation of transition metal sulfide composites.

Fabrication of electrophoretically deposited, self-assembled three-dimensional porous Al/CuO nanothermite films for highly enhanced energy output

Yanjun Yin,Xueming Li,Yuanjie Shu,Xiaogang Guo,Hebin Bao,Wulin Li,Yuhua Zhu,Yu Li,Xinyue Huang

A novel porous Al/CuO nanothermite was successfully synthetized by utilizing the controllable electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The morphology and phase composition of the CuO and Al/CuO films were investigated in detail by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). When the pH of the solution was 2.0, the surface area of the Al/CuO film was able to reach 495.6 m 2 /g, which was much higher than that of films grown at pH 1.0, 3.0 or 4.0. Meanwhile, the combustion performance and energy outputs were coincident with the results mentioned above. At pH 2.0, bright flames were observed after ignition, and the released heat of the nanothermite reaction reached 3.49 kJ/g, exhibiting excellent combustion performance and enhanced energy output.

Effects of sediment-associated CuO nanoparticles on Cu bioaccumulation and oxidative stress responses in freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa

Taowu Ma,Shuangjiao Gong,Bin Tian

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) may pose high ecological risks to aquatic ecosystems. While sediments are the final destinations for CuO-NPs, little is known about the potential ecotoxicity of sediment-associated CuO-NPs on freshwater deposit-feeding macroinvertebrates. The gastropod Bellamya aeruginosa was chosen as an ecotoxicological test species. Adult snails were exposed to Cu (180   μg/g dry weight (DW)) added to sediments in the form of CuO-NPs, CuO microparticles (CuO-MPs, size control), and CuSO 4 (solubility control) for 7, 14, and 28   days, Cu burdens in different tissues and biomarkers of oxidative stress were determined to understand Cu accumulation differences among tissues, potential mechanisms of Cu uptake, time-effect relationships, particle size effects, and the relative contribution of toxicity from CuO-NPs and its soluble Cu ions. There was no difference in Cu ion concentrations in porewaters between the CuO-NPs and CuO-MPs treatments. In addition, relatively low Cu ion concentrations in porewater might indicate their remarkably low solubility. The hepatopancreas and gonad of B. aeruginosa are the primary target tissues for Cu accumulation. Cu accumulation in the hepatopancreas and gonad from CuSO 4 treatments was consistently higher than that from the CuO-NPs and CuO-MPs treatments. After long-term exposure, Cu accumulation was higher from CuO-NPs than from CuO-MPs, especially, the Cu accumulation rate from CuO-NPs was greater than that from CuSO 4 . Short-term exposure to the three Cu forms caused oxidative stress to the hepatopancreas. CuO-MPs did not cause oxidative damage. Long-term exposure to CuO-NPs and CuSO 4 resulted in oxidative damage. Overall, prolonged exposure to CuO-NPs will increase the ecotoxicity risk to B. aeruginosa . Although there was no difference in Cu accumulation between the CuO-NPs and CuO-MPs treatments after 14   days of exposure, pronounced oxidative damage was caused by exposure to CuO-NPs but not to CuO-MPs, implying that toxicity of CuO-NPs could be attributed to specific nanoparticulate effects.

Preparation and characterization of RF magnetron sputtered CuO/CaTi4O9 thin films with enhanced third-order nonlinear optical properties

Congfei Yin,Xiaojuan Liang,Guangcai Hu,Xie Hu,Xipeng Chen,Pengzhi Li,Weidong Xiang

The titanate , is a material of interest for various energy applications, including photovoltaics , catalysts, and high-rate energy storage devices. Herein, its related materials, CuO/CaTi 4 O 9 [CCTO] thin films , were successfully fabricated on SrTiO 3 (100) substrates by RF magnetron sputtering assisted with subsequent oxygen annealing. This obtained CCTO thin films were then systemically studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scan electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that CuO and CaTi 4 O 9 (001) particles were closely accumulated together on the surface of the substrate in the annealing process after comparing with that of the as-prepared thin film, which was verified by SEM and AFM results. Furthermore, we investigated the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the as-prepared and annealed CCTO thin film by means of the Z-scan technique using 650   nm femtosecond laser pulse. Post-deposition oxygen annealing was found to modify the morphological characteristics of the films, resulting in enhancing their NLO properties. The observation of NLO performance of annealed CCTO thin film indicates that RF magnetron sputtering is a feasible method for the fabrication of optical thin films, which can be expanded to fabricate other NLO materials from the corresponding dispersions. Naturally, we concluded that the CCTO thin film occupy a better NLO property, and thus enlarge its application in nonlinear optics .

Short-term impacts of Cu, CuO, ZnO and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on anammox sludge: CuNPs make a difference

Zheng-Zhe Zhang,Jia-Jia Xu,Zhi-Jian Shi,Ya-Fei Cheng,Zheng-Quan Ji,Rui Deng,Ren-Cun Jin

The increasing application of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) has posed an emerging challenge to wastewater treatment processes. The short-term impacts of CuNPs, CuONPs, ZnONPs and AgNPs on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process were investigated firstly in this study. CuONPs, ZnONPs and AgNPs up to 50   mg   g −1 suspended solid (SS) did not affect anammox activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or cell membrane integrity. However, 1.25   mg   g −1   SS CuNPs significantly inhibited the anammox activity and the loads that caused 50% inhibition were 4.64   ±   1.24 and 3.27   ±   0.79   mg   g −1   SS for anammox granules and flocs, respectively. 5   mg   g −1   SS CuNPs caused serious accumulation of the toxic intermediate N 2 H 4 . Furthermore, CuNPs interacted with extracellular polymeric substances by specifically bonding to tyrosine or tryptophan-containing groups, C-O-C in polysaccharides and –OH in polymeric compounds. Therefore, this study calls for more attention to the risks of NPs to the anammox-based processes.
