Molecularly Imprinted-g-C3N5 for Photocatalytic Oxidation of d-glucose

Tang Zhanqiu,Fu Yuqing,Feng Xinyi,Wu Zhenglong,Qin Weidong

Enantioselective catalytic oxidation of d -glucose has been extensively applied in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. In this work, a nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitride ( g- C 3 N 5 ) was synthesized through the pyrolysis of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. This material exhibited a reduced band gap, enhanced electrical conductivity, and superior photocatalytic performance compared to graphitic C 3 N 4 ( g- C 3 N 4 ), facilitating more efficient photocatalytic oxidation of glucose with higher yield. The surface of g- C 3 N 5 was subsequently capped with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer by employing d -glucose as the template molecule, and 4-vinylphenylboronic acid as the functional monomer. The resulting g- C 3 N 5 -MIPs demonstrated the ability to selectively photocatalyze the oxidation of d -glucose, producing d -glu acid and H 2 O 2 . Notably, the relative selectivity coefficient for d -glucose over l -glucose increased by a factor of 8.79 compared to the non-imprinted g- C 3 N 5 . This work presents an effective approach for synthesizing advanced g-C 3 N 5 -MIP-based photocatalysts, and highlights their potential for highly enantioselective aerobic oxidation of d -glucose. Nanopore Discriminating d-Glucose Enantiomer Using a Designed Chiral Receptor

Shuang Li,Shuting Li,Longda Li,Zhaoquan Li,Yixi Li,Linhong He,Yanying Liu,Fan Yang,Yong Huang,Xinchun Li

Ion channels can selectively recognize and transport biological species via an exquisite protein conformational switch. Classically, glucose-specific ion channels strictly transport the disomer over the lisomer. Inspired by this, we report a biomimetic d-glucose-responsive ion gate. We designed and synthesized a functional receptor, a chiral biphenylboronic acid (cBBA) derivative, which was used as a responsive element in an artificial nanopore. Due to its high binding affinity for d-glucose molecules, the biomimetic ion gate exhibits a sensitive and specific gating effect in response to d-glucose stimulation, thereby modulating the ionic current rectification (ICR) behavior. Remarkably, an extremely low concentration (e.g., 10 pM) of d-glucose stimulus could generate a remarkable ionic current change. After binding of physiological concentration of d-glucose (e.g., 5 mM), the ionic current modulation drastically decreased, with the switch ratio reaching up to 1530, showing a powerful gating capacity. Particularly, other saccharide analogues or the l-glucose isomer failed to activate the ion gate. Moreover, this gating effect was pH-dependent and demonstrated reversible ON-OFF ability when altering the medium acidity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unraveled that the designed artificial receptor can preferentially bind d-glucose over the l-glucose enantiomer, and finite element simulations revealed the ion gating mechanism in the d-glucose sensing event. The nanopore sensor was successfully applied to the electrochemical assay of glucose in biofluids.

Shaogang Liu,Libo Wang,Xiaolong Wang,Lu Liu,Aiguo Zhou,Xinxin Cao

In this study, Ti 3 C 2 was delaminated into 2D single or few monolayers-thick nanomaterials (d-Ti 3 C 2 ) by DMSO intercalation and sonication method. Then, d-Ti 3 C 2 /polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were prepared by solution casting process. The structures, thermal stabilities, thermal behaviors, and surface properties of the resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Furthermore, the experimental results showed improvements in mechanical and thermal characteristics of d-Ti 3 C 2 /PVA films, as compared to those of pure PVA. The addition of d-Ti 3 C 2 had beneficial effects on the tensile strength , elongation at break, modulus of elasticity , thermal stability, and crystallinity of PVA matrix. With 0.5 wt% of d-Ti 3 C 2 , d-Ti 3 C 2 /PVA composite exhibited the best comprehensive properties.

SYSU-6, A New 2-D Aluminophosphate Zeolite Layer Precursor

Jiang-Zhen Qiu,Long-Fei Wang,Jiuxing Jiang

Two-dimensional aluminophosphate is an important precursor of phosphate-based zeolites; a new Sun Yat-sen University No. 6 (SYSU-6) with |Hada|2[Al2(HPO4)(PO4)2] has been synthesized in the hydrothermal synthesis with organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) ofN,N,3,5-tetramethyladamantan-1-amine. In this paper, SYSU-6 is characterized by single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, infrared and UV Raman spectroscopy, solid-state27Al,31P and13C magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure indicates that SYSU-6 crystallized in the space groupP21/n, with a = 8.4119(3), b = 36.9876(12), c = 12.5674(3), α = 90°, β = 108.6770(10)°, γ = 90°, V = 3704.3(2) Å3, Z = 4, R = 5.12%, for 8515 observed data (I > 2σ(I)). The structure has a new 4,12-ring layer framework topology linked by alternating AlO4and PO4tetrahedra. The organic molecules reside between the layers and are hydrogen-bonded to the inorganic framework. The new type of layer provides a greater opportunity to construct zeolite with novel topology.Keywords:aluminophosphate;2-D zeolite;SYSU-6

Effects of D-Tetramethrin on Zebrafish Development and Immune System

Yang Li,Keyuan Zhong,Sijie Zhang,Shiyi Duan,Kaijie Huang,Xiaofang Che,Xinchun Guo,Huiqiang Lu

D-tetramethrin is a common insecticide that is important for the control of mosquito-transmitted diseases such as malaria and dengue and, due to its widespread use, it is frequently detected in environmental systems. However, there is currently very little information on the influence of D-tetramethrin on non-target organisms. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to various concentrations of D-tetramethrin (0, 3, 6, and 9 mg/L) from 6 to 72 h past fertilization (hpf) to ascertain the influence of D-tetramethrin on the zebrafish immune system and development. We found that D-tetramethrin exposure led to a significant decrease in heart rate, an increase in the yolk area and tail flick frequency, and a shortening of body length in zebrafish larvae, compared with the control group. The number of macrophages and neutrophils in the experimental group of zebrafish larvae decreased significantly and the oxidative stress levels increased compared with the control group. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content increased significantly, while catalase (CAT) activity increased and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased in the experimental group. At the same time, apoptosis increased in the zebrafish embryo cells, and the expression of apoptosis-related genes such as p53 , Bax , and Bcl-2 was abnormal. Moreover, the pro-inflammatory genes IL-8 , IFN-γ , IL-6 , and TNF-α were up-regulated, while the anti-inflammatory gene, IL-10 , was down-regulated. Therefore, D-tetramethrin significantly affects the immune system and oxidative stress levels in zebrafish, inducing cell apoptosis and negatively affecting embryo development. These results provide novel data for the toxicity of D-tetramethrin and the potential adverse effects of environment residues.

Augmented Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution by d–p Orbital Electron Coupling

Ning Sun,Zhichuan Zheng,Zhuangzhuang Lai,Junjie Wang,Peng Du,Tianping Ying,Haifeng Wang,Jianchun Xu,Runze Yu,Zhiwei Hu,Chih-Wen Pao,Wei-Hsiang Huang,Ke Bi,Ming Lei,Kai Huang

While high-entropy alloys, high-entropy oxides, and high-entropy hydroxides, are advanced as a novel frontier in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution, their inherent activity deficiency poses a major challenge. To achieve the unlimited goal to tailor the structure–activity relationship in multicomponent systems, entropy-driven composition engineering presents substantial potential, by fabricating high-entropy anion-regulated transition metal compounds as sophisticated oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Herein, a versatile 2D high-entropy metal phosphorus trisulfide is developed as a promising and adjustable platform. Leveraging the multiple electron couplings and d–p orbital hybridizations induced by the cocktail effect, the exceptional oxygen evolution catalytic activity is disclosed upon van der Waals material (MnFeCoNiZn)PS 3 , exhibiting an impressively low overpotential of 240 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a minimal Tafel slope of 32 mV dec −1 , and negligible degradation under varying current densities for over 96 h. Density functional theory calculations further offer insights into the correlation between orbital hybridization and catalytic performance within high-entropy systems, underscoring the contribution of active phosphorus centers on the substrate to performance enhancements. Moreover, by achieving electron redistribution to optimize the electron coordination environment, this work presents an effective strategy for advanced catalysts in energy-related applications.

UV/H2O2 produced degradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA

Jiahui Zhang,Wenliang Zhang,Yue Wang,Shaoyi Jiang,Yan Wang,Zhezheng Ding,Xiaomin Liu

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic (2,4-D) acid and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA), as widely utilized organochlorine pesticides , are normally detected in wastewater and atmosphere. Their harmfulness to the ecosystem cannot be ignored. UV/H 2 O 2 is one of the most conventional advanced oxidation processes, which has remarkable advantages for the removal of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the reaction mechanisms and pathways of pollutants with reactive radicals are still unclear. In this study, the degradation efficacy and mechanisms during the photodegradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in UV/H 2 O 2 processes were investigated by experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that 2,4-D was more likely to be degraded by UV/H 2 O 2 treatment than UV photolysis alone. In contrast, 4-CPA can be degraded effectively and rapidly under UV irradiation alone. By LC-MS analysis, the degradation products of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in the UV/H 2 O 2 processes were identified and they were produced by hydroxylation and photolysis. Therefore, we speculated a competition mechanism presented between direct photolysis and indirect photolysis in the UV/H 2 O 2 degradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA. The OH-initiated reaction mechanisms of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in aqueous environments were investigated using quantum chemical methods SMD/M06–2X/6–311++G (3df, 2p)//SMD/M06–2X/6-311 + G (d,p). The pH dependence of the reaction mechanisms and rate constants in their degradation process induced by ·OH was also investigated. The calculation results showed that the ionic forms (2,4-D - and 4-CPA - ) were more prone to react with ·OH in comparison to the corresponding molecular forms (2,4-D and 4-CPA). The total rate constants of 2,4-D and 4-CPA with OH increased with the pH from 1 to 10, and decreased with continued pH increase. The toxicities of 2,4-D, 4-CPA and their products were assessed by the QSAR-based toxicity evaluation software. The results showed that several products were more toxic than their parent compounds, such as 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorocatechol, 4-chlorophenol and hydroquinone . This work can contribute to clarifying the environmental risks of 2,4-D and 4-CPA and offer a complete understanding for the photodegradation behavior of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in aqueous ecosystems.

Yogurt Alleviates Cyclophosphamide-Induced Immunosuppression in Mice through D-Lactate

Xinru Du,Yongheng Yan,Yufeng Dai,Ruijie Xu

Numerous studies have investigated the immunomodulatory effects of yogurt, but the underlying mechanism remained elusive. This study aimed to elucidate the alleviating properties of yogurt on immunosuppression and proposed the underlying mechanism was related to the metabolite D-lactate. In the healthy mice, we validated the safety of daily yogurt consumption (600 μL) or D-lactate (300 mg/kg). In immunosuppressed mice induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX), we evaluated the immune regulation of yogurt and D-lactate. The result showed that yogurt restored body weight, boosted immune organ index, repaired splenic tissue, recovered the severity of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions and increased serum cytokines (IgA, IgG, IL-6, IFN-γ). Additionally, yogurt enhanced intestinal immune function by restoring the intestinal barrier and upregulating the abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Further studies showed that D-lactate alleviated immunosuppression in mice mainly by promoting cellular immunity. D-lactate recovered body weight and organ development, elevated serum cytokines (IgA, IgG, IL-6, IFN-γ), enhanced splenic lymphocyte proliferation and increased the mRNA level of T-bet in splenic lymphocyte to bolster Th1 differentiation. Finally, CTX is a chemotherapeutic drug, thus, the application of yogurt and D-lactate in the tumor-bearing mouse model was initially explored. The results showed that both yogurt (600 μL) and D-lactate (300 mg/kg) reduced cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression without promoting tumor growth. Overall, this study evaluated the safety, immune efficacy and applicability of yogurt and D-lactate in regulating immunosuppression. It emphasized the potential of yogurt as a functional food for immune regulation, with D-lactate playing a crucial role in its immunomodulatory effects.

Protein Engineering of Tagatose 4-Epimerase for D-Tagatose Production

Yuxin Wang,Zijian Tan,Hongli Wei,Nan Zhang,Lifei Wang,Yifan Yang,Weidong Liu,Leilei Zhu

D-Tagatose, a promising sugar substitute with various functional properties and commercial applications, can be enzymatically converted from D-fructose by tagatose 4-epimerase. The development of an efficient tagatose 4-epimerase that catalyzes the conversion of D-fructose into D-tagatose is essential to make the production technology of D-tagatose applicable. In this study, tagatose 4-epimerase from Thermotogae (TsT4Ease) was engineered through semi-rational design and directed evolution, resulting in a 2.8-fold improvement in catalytic activity compared to the wild type (WT). The production of D-tagatose reached 42 g/L in 2 h. Crystal structure analysis determined the structural features with a common (α/β)8-TIM barrel and a Zn2+-binding architecture at the active center. Subsequent molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that the substitutions improved substrate binding energy and stabilized the active pocket. This study offers new insights into the structure–function relationship of TsT4Ease and provides a candidate tagatose 4-epimerase.

Structural design enables highly-efficient green emission with preferable blue light excitation from zero-dimensional manganese (II) hybrids

Shuai Zhang,Yifei Zhao,Jiadong Zhou,Hong Ming,Chun-Hai Wang,Xiping Jing,Shi Ye,Qinyuan Zhang

Manganese (II) compounds are promising luminescent candidates for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) applications. However, the forbidden d - d transition of Mn 2+ ion makes the absorption of blue light and emission relatively weak without a sensitizer. The strategy of isolating MnX n (X is the ligand) with some ionic liquids is used to design two new hybrid compounds in this study, focusing on the orbital hybridization to relax the parity selection rule of the d - d transition. A large hindrance of the organic cations in the two new Manganese (II) hybrids enables a large Mn-Mn distance (up to ~ 10 Å) to form zero-dimensional (0D) structures, and the Mn sites in both compounds have a low site symmetry ( C 2 or C 1 ). The 0D structure of MnX n polyhedral is beneficial to isolatedly investigate the orbital hybridization of the ligand and Mn 2+ ion. A higher orbital hybridization extent for Mn-Br bond is evidenced by Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulation. This conclusion leads to the strong and stable green light emissions under preferable blue light (460 nm) excitations, giving photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) as high as 76%. The WLEDs fabricated with these compounds have presented high luminous efficiency up to ~130 lm/W and survived multiple stability tests. The research favors the discovery of ideal Mn compounds for displays and lighting applications.

Alleviation effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract on inflammation and oxidative stress in a D-galactose-induced aging mouse model by modulating the gut microbiota

Kangliang Sheng,Jian Yang,Yifan Xu,Xiaowei Kong,Jingmin Wang,Yongzhong Wang

Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) that prevents and alleviates the degenerative changes associated with aging has been receiving extensive attention. In our present work, the ageing model was induced by injection of 500 mg kg−1D-galactose daily for a period of eight weeks. The D-galactose-induced ageing mice model was used for evaluating the effect of GSPE on oxidative stress, inflammation levels and gut microbiota composition. D-Galactose induced oxidative damage and inflammation with a significant increase in malondialdehyde contents, myeloperoxidase activities and the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β, as well as a reduction in the activities of glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione. Treatment with different doses of GSPE could significantly improve the antioxidant capacity and inflammation levels in the liver and brain, which is accompanied by increased Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Akkermansia, as well as decreased Helicobacter and Alistipes. In addition, the high-dose GSPE group exhibited greater potential to delay the ageing process than the low-dose group. Our results also showed that GSPE administration could downregulate the NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway for inhibiting inflammation levels in the brain tissue. This study provided a novel strategy to target the gut microbiota with regard to the effect of GSPE administration on alleviating aging-induced alterations via the gut microbiota–liver axis and gut microbiota–brain axis.

Efficient synthesis of D-pantolactone in monophase and organic-aqueous biphase reaction biosystem using a novel conjugated polyketide reductase based on integrated substrate pocket alteration

Xiao-Jian Zhang,Min Cao,Yi-Fei Luo,Meng-Yu Huang,Fang-Ying Zhu,Zhi-Qiang Liu,Yu-Guo Zheng

D-pantolactone (D-PL) is the crucial chiral intermediate for the synthesis of D-pantothenic acid. The asymmetric synthesis of D-PL from ketopantothenic acid lactone (KPL) using conjugated polyketide reductases (CPRs) exhibited high catalytic efficiency and high enantioselectivity. A novel conjugated polyketide reductase KbCPR was isolated from Kazachstania barnettii and the mutant KbCPR Y29K/R65N/K215R was developed with the improved activity by 9.0 folds and the enhanced k cat / K m value by 2.6 folds than the wild-type based on integrated substrate pocket alteration strategy, to alter the substrate channel, to regulate the pocket size, and to facilitate proton transfer. An organic-aqueous biphase biosystem containing 40% dibutyl phthalate (v/v) was constructed to inhibit the hydrolysis of KPL and improve the catalytic efficiency. The time-space yield of 892.9   g   L -1 d -1 was achieved, which was higher than ever reported. Furthermore, the organic-aqueous biphase system was employed for the first time in the multi-enzymatic system for D-PL preparation from L-pantolactone (L-PL), without any accumulation of KPL intermediate, high concentration of 1 M L-PL was 95.5% converted to D-PL, with the final production e.e. of >99.9%.
