Lithium oxalate (Li 2 C 2 O 4 ) is regarded as a promising prelithiation agent due to its high specific capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, its intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and sluggish reaction kinetics result in a high lithium liberation potential (typically above 4.5 V), which challenges the stability of electrolytes and electrode materials, and deteriorates overall battery performance. In this work, the intermetallic NiBi 3 catalyst with metallic conductivity and strong interfacial interaction is introduced to promote the low-potential decomposition of Li 2 C 2 O 4 . Benefiting from the synergistic electronic effect between Ni and Bi, the incorporation of Bi effectively modulates the electronic structure of Ni sites via d – p orbital hybridization, thereby enhancing the adsorption and activation of Li 2 C 2 O 4 , weakening the Li 2 C 2 O 4 framework and facilitating its decomposition. When coupled with ultrahigh-Ni NCM96 cathodes, the NiBi 3 -Li 2 C 2 O 4 prelithiation system provides higher charge capacity (273.3 mAh g −1 ) and improved reaction kinetics compared to the pristine counterpart. Furthermore, full-cell configurations based on SiO x anodes exhibit enhanced lithium compensation capability, maintaining a capacity retention of 52.9% after 150 cycles at 0.5C. These results demonstrate that intermetallic NiBi 3 is an efficient catalyst for activating Li 2 C 2 O 4 and provides a viable strategy for developing high-performance cathode prelithiation systems. Vitamin D 3 (VD 3 ) is an essential fat-soluble micronutrient that regulates diverse biological processes. However, its long-term impact on avian intestinal development remains largely unknown. In this study, we detected that the VD 3 content was significantly lower in late-cycle production eggs (68 weeks old, termed “LP eggs”) compared to the peak-cycle production eggs (44 weeks old, named “PP eggs”) ( P < 0.05). Notably, the intestine index was reduced ( P < 0.05), and the intestinal expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins (Occludin and ZO-1) was decreased for chicks hatched from LP eggs versus those from PP eggs ( P < 0.05). Thus serial dosages of VD 3 (2.5, 5.0, or 7.5 μg VD 3 /egg) were injected into the amniotic cavity of embryos hatched from LP eggs on embryonic day 17 (E17). This intervention effectively improved hatchability, promoted intestinal development that persisted through 14-days post-hatch, and showed immuno-modulatory effects manifesting as Interleukin-6 ( IL-6 ) downregulation and Interleukin-10 ( IL-10 ) upregulation. Further in vivo and in vitro analysis revealed that VD 3 improved intestinal development by activating TJ-related genes ( P < 0.05), with vitamin D receptor (VDR) mediating these effects. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays confirmed that 1,25-(OH) 2 D 3 strengthened VDR binding to promoter regions of Occludin and ZO-1 but decreased the interaction degree of VDR with the IL-6 promoter ( P < 0.05). These findings establish that in ovo injection of VD 3 is an efficacious perinatal intervention strategy, which significantly mitigates developmental constraints in late-phase poultry production through VDR-dependent intestinal barrier potentiation and immuno-homeostasis modulation.

Electrocatalytic alkynol semihydrogenation (EASH) represents a promising alternative to conventional alkenol production. However, it is plagued by severe overhydrogenation and a competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, we synthesize a Pd3BiCx intermetallic carbide metallene (Pd3BiCx ene) as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the selective semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY). At −0.3 V vs RHE, the catalyst system achieves 94.1% conversion, 95.3% selectivity, and 90.4% Faradaic efficiency while maintaining long-term stability over 70 h. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that carbon doping induces synergistic p-d-p orbital hybridization among Pd, Bi, and C. This electronic structure modulation optimizes the adsorption energy of MBY while facilitating the desorption of 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBE). Furthermore, carbon doping kinetically hinders overhydrogenation by eliminating subsurface hydrogen species and increasing the energy barrier for the overhydrogenation step. Concurrently, this p-d-p hybridization stabilizes surface adsorbed hydrogen (H*ads), thereby promoting the hydrogenation pathway and suppressing the HER. This work establishes an effective catalyst design strategy for fabricating p-d-p orbital-hybridized intermetallic catalysts, offering an innovative approach for high-efficiency EASH.

The efficiency of photocatalytic O 2 activation for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is limited by kinetically sluggish electron transfer. Overcoming this limitation, we engineered a heterointerface (forming BaTiO 3 /Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 , BTO/BOC) to facilitate d-p orbital hybridization by strain engineering, thereby creating a surface electron-rich region. Results demonstrate that strain engineering amplifies the d-p orbital hybridization effect, significantly enhancing O 2 adsorption strength. Furthermore, strain application enriches the electronic states near the Fermi level, enabling more electrons to migrate to the material surface to participate in O 2 activation. Consequently, the optimized BTO/BOC-3 exhibits exceptional ROS productivity, with 1.584 and 432.96 µmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ yields for hydroxyl radical (·OH) and superoxide radical (·O 2 ⁻), respectively. This enables superior sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation performance, representing 2.88-fold and 11.08-fold enhancements over photocatalysis and piezo-catalysis, while toxicity simulations confirm reduced ecotoxicity of the degradation intermediates. This work pioneers a novel pathway for efficient piezo-photocatalytic ROS generation, enabling high-performance environment remediation.

Engineered HA/D-Mannose nanoparticles with temporal dual-targeting for colitis stages. • Achieved colon-specific drug release via a pH-responsive shell overcoming oral barriers. • Simultaneously targets inflammatory macrophages and damaged intestinal epithelium. • A single nanoparticle enables triple therapy: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and barrier repair. • Achieved >80% mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis within 7 days. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by complex spatiotemporal heterogeneity, which poses significant challenges for effective treatment. Herein, we constructed DS-HDLTQs, a core-shell nanodelivery platform with dynamic dual-targeting capabilities. This platform utilizes hyaluronic acid (HA) and D-mannose (D-Man) to target acute inflammation and promote repair. It also features a dopamine-alginate (DA-SA, or DS) shell to achieve pH-responsive release specifically at colonic lesions. In animal experiments, DS-HDLTQs achieved 83.3% mucosal healing in just 7 days, significantly outperforming single-targeting systems. The DA-SA protective layer ensures pH-responsive release in the colon with an efficiency of up to 92.7%. Such therapeutic enhancement is driven by three synergistic mechanisms: molecular functional synergy (restoring antioxidants), spatiotemporal targeting-pathological process synergy (accelerating barrier reconstruction), and immune-epithelial repair synergy (promoting macrophage polarization and epithelial regeneration). DS-HDLTQs demonstrated a 12.7-fold increase in drug concentration at the lesion site. This design resolves the core contradiction between dynamic pathology and oral delivery efficiency, providing a new paradigm for UC treatment and potential applications in other inflammatory diseases. Background The N-terminal domain of gasdermin D (GSDMD) is a known suppressor of prostate cancer (PCa), primarily recognized for its tumoricidal pyroptotic function. However, research on the full-length GSDMD protein and its relationship with PCa remains unexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential non-pyroptotic mechanism of action of GSDMD in preventing PCa immune evasion. Methods The study used GSDMD deletion models to assess its impact on tumor progression and immune cell profiles. Molecular techniques, including protein interaction analysis, were employed to identify the binding partner of GSDMD and the subsequent signaling pathways. Correlative analysis was performed between GSDMD expression and immune markers in human PCa samples. Results GSDMD deletion increased tumor progression and reduced survival, cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation/infiltration and tumor cell susceptibility to T-cell death, promoting an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). GSDMD-bound laminin subunit gamma-2 (LAMC2), thus inducing its ubiquitin-mediated degradation. Consequently, GSDMD deficiency stabilized LAMC2, driving M2 macrophage polarization and CXC motif chemokine ligand 5 (CXCL5) secretion. CXCL5 interacted with CXCR2 to activate the AKT/NF-κB axis, increasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and suppressing CTL activity. GSDMD expression in human PCa positively correlated with CD8 + T-cell infiltration and negatively with M2-phenotype tumor-associated macrophages. Conclusion This study reveals a novel non-pyroptotic pathway through which GSDMD inhibits PCa immune evasion by targeting LAMC2 for degradation, thereby preventing the establishment of an immunosuppressive TME. The findings suggest that activating GSDMD represents a promising therapeutic strategy to reprogram the TME from immunosuppressive (“cold”) to immunoreactive (“hot”), potentially enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapy in advanced PCa.

The pathogenesis of acute liver injury (ALI) involves the loss of hepatic detoxification function, massive death of liver parenchymal cells within a short period, and excessive inflammatory responses. Studies have shown that Esculetin (Esc) possesses potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor properties. In this study, we investigate whether Esc has a protective effect against ALI in mice and its potential mechanism. Esculetin markedly decreased ROS, MitoSOX, and apoptosis levels in AML12 cells and restored MMP. H&E staining demonstrated that Esc alleviated hepatic histopathological injury, and its intervention reduced serum ALT and AST levels. Moreover, Esc diminished ROS and apoptosis levels in the liver. Hepatic proteomic profiling identified the AMPK signaling pathway. Esc reduced the protein levels of p-AMPK/AMPK, PGC-1α, p-SIRT1/SIRT1, and BAX and upregulated the levels of Bcl-2 in liver tissue. Concomitantly, we added inhibitor Compound C (CC) to the AML12 cells to assess whether Esc acted through the AMPK pathway. The results showed that CC exacerbated the degree of liver injury, whereas Esc was able to reverse these phenomena, thus exerting an anti-liver injury effect. These findings provide mechanistic insights into the protective effects of Esc against ALI and support its potential as a therapeutic candidate for ALI.

Lignocellulosic
biomass is an abundant renewable resource that
is rich in aldohexoses and aldopentoses. Efficient biocatalysts for
aldopentose oxidation remain limited, and few enzymes exhibit high
catalytic efficiency toward both aldohexoses and aldopentoses. Here,
a naturally promiscuous pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent glucose
dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) from Pseudomonas fragi NL20W was selected as an engineering template and tailored by semirational
design to expand aldopentose oxidation while preserving native d -glucose activity. The V706P/L723 M mutant exhibited markedly
enhanced catalytic efficiency toward d -xylose and l -arabinose, reaching 8.0- and 2.4-fold those of the wild-type, respectively,
while its efficiency toward d -glucose was 1.3-fold that of
the wild-type. Molecular simulations suggested that the improved catalysis
was associated with an optimized substrate positioning and enhanced
conformational flexibility of the active-site region. This study highlights
the significance of natural enzyme scaffold selection in substrate
scope engineering and expands the application potential of PQQ-GDH
in the sustainable valorization of lignocellulosic sugars.

As a high-value spice and medicinal compound, the volatilization and degradation of D-borneol during processing pose significant challenges in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Considering the size matching, pre-formed V-type starch (V 6 and V 7 -type carrier) was used to improve the retention and stability of D-borneol in different encapsulation methods (Wet, Semi-dry, and Dry). The semi-dry method used with the V 7 -type carrier exhibited the highest loading capacity (90.79 mg/g), significantly higher than those obtained via Wet (55.55 mg/g) and Dry (22.52 mg/g) methods. The good complexation was under the balance of restricted dissolution at the ratio of 6:20 (V 7 -type starch: ethanol, w/v) and mechanical grinding at 25 °C via semi-dry method. The complexes prepared with the semi-dry method below 25 °C and 50 °C showed the lowest D-borneol release rate, primarily governed by concentration diffusion. At higher temperatures (75 °C), the slow release of D-borneol depended on its stable binding with starch helical interaction. These findings highlight the potential of semi-dry encapsulation method as an effective strategy for stabilizing D-borneol and enabling its controlled release in functional food applications.

This study developed a novel defective composite material (UiO-66/D-AMP) based on defect engineering and in situ synthesis of ammonium phosphomolybdate (AMP) for the highly selective capture of Cs + and Sr 2+ . The changes in adsorption capacity and surface functional groups of the composite before and after defect engineering were analyzed by adsorption experiment and FT-IR characterization. It was found that the defect-engineered composite had obvious carboxyl groups, and the adsorption efficiency of Sr 2+ was effectively improved. Several analytical methods were employed to verify the effective incorporation of AMP onto the UiO-66 framework. SEM-EDS was utilized to examine surface morphology and elemental composition. FTIR confirmed the presence of functional groups, while XRD analysis validated the crystalline structure. Additionally, TG assessed thermal stability, and BET measurements determined the material's surface area and porosity, collectively confirming AMP loading. The UiO-66/D-AMP composite exhibited significant adsorption affinity for both Cs + and Sr 2+ ions, demonstrating its potential for radioactive wastewater treatment. Under alkaline conditions (pH 10), the composite demonstrated exceptional removal efficiencies of 98.43% for Cs + and 99.54% for Sr 2+ . The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 104.3 mg/g for Cs + and 20.18 mg/g for Sr 2+ . Notably, the adsorption kinetics revealed rapid equilibration times of 5 min for Cs + and 60 min for Sr 2+ . The adsorption kinetics of Cs + and Sr 2+ followed the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherms fitted well with the Langmuir model. In mixed solutions containing Cs + , Sr 2+ , and four competing ions, UiO-66/D-AMP exhibited excellent selectivity for both Cs + and Sr 2+ . Remarkably, the adsorption capacities for Cs + and Sr 2+ remained stable following exposure to various adsorbed doses. XPS provided direct evidence for the ion exchange mechanism between Cs + and NH 4 + during adsorption. Sr 2+ first exchanged with H + on UiO-66/D-AMP, then coordinated with the oxygen atom in the carboxyl group to be adsorbed.

H 2 –O 2 polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) represent one of the most promising next generation renewable energy conversion technologies. Two of the remaining unsolved key issues relate to inefficient mass transport and water management when working at high current densities . These problems arise from the structure of the existing flow fields and gas diffusion layers (GDLs), as well as the counter propagating flow directions of gas reactants and liquid products. To address these issues, we propose a novel design of an integrated flow field-gas diffusion layer ( i -FF-GDL) generated by 3D printing of TiH 2 followed by high temperature decomposition . In this new i -FF-GDL design, a porous Ti “bone” structure is used to drive water transport through capillary action , while regularly printed gaps transport gases. Benefiting from the separate gas and liquid flow channels, APEFCs using our i -FF-GDL design exhibit up to a 15% increase in peak power density (PPD) under H 2 -air (CO 2 free) and H 2 –O 2 conditions, when compared to traditional APEFCs. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveals that the enhanced performance arises largely from an increase in the mass transport. This work provides new insights and strategies for achieving high efficiency mass transport for fuel cells, water electrolyzers and related technologies.

The development of highly active catalysts is crucial for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) to meet the growing demand for sulfur-free fuels. In this study, a defect-rich composite catalyst UiO-DAlaPW was successfully synthesized via mechanochemical grinding, wherein phosphotungstic acid (HPW) was encapsulated within a defect-engineered UiO-66 framework, utilizing D-alanine (DAla) as a bridging molecule. The synthesized catalyst, UiO-DAlaPW, significantly enhances the utilization efficiency of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). In the model oil ODS system, the material exhibited exceptional catalytic performance: achieving deep desulfurization at room temperature within merely 5 min under conditions of extremely low acetonitrile cosolvent usage and a low oxidant/sulfur (O/S) ratio, accompanied by remarkably high H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency. Moreover, the catalyst maintained high desulfurization efficiency even in the absence of acetonitrile. Characterization by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS confirmed the successful encapsulation of HPW within the UiO-66 framework. Mechanistic studies revealed a significant synergistic effect between UiO-66 and HPW. The effective cooperation of the two active sites, namely Zr in UiO-66 and PW, significantly enhances the catalytic performance, contributing to superior oxidative desulfurization activity.
