The cathode's oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a crucial role in a variety of fuel cells. Developing affordable and efficient non-precious electrocatalysts for the ORR poses a major hurdle in the realm of electrochemical energy technologies. This work presents a transition metal-based catalyst, Fe-ONC, in which Fe is loaded in an oxygen-enriched nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) material. Oxygen enrichment of the catalyst was achieved by a pre-oxidation strategy. The XPS analysis reveals that Fe-ONC exhibits a higher abundance of oxidized species. The Fe of Fe-ONC exists in the form of Fe 3 O 4 particles and Fe-N x , respectively, which are uniformly distributed in the NC. The even spread of iron sites and the plentiful presence of oxygen-rich species are key factors in the superior ORR efficiency of Fe-ONC. Fe-ONC's half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) in an alkaline environment (0.1 M KOH) stands at 0.891 V, markedly surpassing the standard commercial Pt/C value (0.840 V). Additionally, Fe-ONC demonstrated enhanced longevity and resistance to ethanol in comparison to commercially available Pt/C. Fe-ONC's outstanding efficacy highlights its potential as an alternative to precious metal catalysts. The document outlines a plan for creating ORR catalytic materials that are sustainable, economical, and efficient.

Contaminants of heavy metals and antibiotics, which are frequently detected in water, soil and food chains with increasing prevalence in our current society, can cause potential harm to human health and disrupt human ecosystem irreversibly. Herein, we have successfully utilized biomass waste ferns contaminated by iron mines, to fabricate a first-of-its-kind high-performance class of Fe single-atom catalysts (FeSAC) by a facile pyrolysis. The optimal FeSAC-800 shows an excellent efficiency in the fast-photocatalytic degradation of six types of quinolone antibiotics (e.g., norfloxacin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, lomefloxacin, flumequine) in 1 h under the simulated natural light irradiation. Based on advanced characterization, a well-defined structure of FeN 4 , confined in the porous carbon is elaborated for the FeSAC-800. Mechanism of the photodegradation is via a Fenton-like oxidation process whereas the reactive oxygen species play a key role. These findings open a new avenue for efficient, sustainable utilization of biomass waste in pollutant control.

The objective of the current effort was to determine the efficacy of Fe(II)-montmorillonite (Fe(II)-MMT) as an adjuvant for specific targeted adsorption of phosphate. Specifically, Fe(II)-MMT was studied to combat hyperphosphatemia and anemia arising from chronic renal failure. The adsorption of phosphate over time, pH, and initial concentration was studied. The systems were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, and zeta potential. The experimental results demonstrated the adsorption time was set to 140 min to achieve maximum adsorption efficiency. It was thus found that the maximum adsorption was at pH 3.0. In addition, it reached equilibrium when the initial phosphate concentration was at 60 mg/L while the maximum adsorption capacity was 5.75 mg of phosphate/g of Fe(II)-MMT. On the other hand, adsorption isotherms showed that the Langmuir model was better than the Freundlich model. This means that the adsorption of the phosphate on Fe(II)-montmorillonites was monolayer adsorption, and the phosphate was successfully adsorbed either onto the surface or intercalated within interlayer volume. Live experiments supported the ability of Fe (II)-MMT to control hyperphosphatemia and treat chronic renal failure.

With increasingly stringent application environments, there is a growing demand for designing and fabricating of promising structural materials. Conventional metallurgical methods typically struggle to produce positive mixing enthalpy alloys with uniform microstructures and consistent properties due to mutual immiscibility and uncontrollable segregation during solidification. To this end, we employ a bottom-up approach to fabricate Cu-50 vol% Fe 55 Cr 25 Mo 16 B 2 C 2 positive mixing enthalpy composites, utilizing ultrafast high-temperature sintering and instantaneous quenching. The method effectively prevents liquid segregation during the molten state and allows precise control over the size and distribution of the two phases. In addition, incorporated metallic glass particles as the hard phase additives, which can quickly form the localized multi-phase nanocrystals and establish a robust interlocking structure with pure copper during rapid sintering. Upon rapid quenching, the two phases solidify with a tight and conformal interface, while the elemental cross-diffusion and phase separation are mitigated. The mechanical tensile strength of the resulting composite is approximately 8 times greater than that of pure Cu. The wear resistance improves by 40-50 times, and the Vickers hardness increases by a factor of 10. The innovative sintering method provides a feasible pathway for developing and manufacturing of positive mixing enthalpy composite materials.

Understanding Fe incorporation in layered double hydroxide (LDH) phases is important for revealing the steel/cement interface interaction in low carbon cement. In this study, synchrotron-based characterization is combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to unravel the atomistic mechanisms controlling Fe(III) incorporation in Mg Al LDHs as a function of composition and local structure. XAS measurements reveal that Fe incorporation is strongly suppressed under trivalent-cation-rich compositions, leading to a preferential association of Fe with edge or defect-related environments. The spectra indicate that Fe(III) is incorporated into the LDH lattice in a well-defined octahedral environment under Mg-rich compositions. DFT calculations of substitution energies support these findings by showing that Fe(III) substitution for Al(III) in the main layers is strongly composition-dependent: Fe(III) incorporation is most unfavorable at Al-rich compositions but becomes progressively more favorable in Mg-rich environments. In Al-rich LDHs, Fe shortens neighboring Al O bonds, introducing local strain and lowering mechanical stability, while in Mg-rich LDHs the more flexible Mg O framework accommodates Fe(III) more effectively. Overall, this study defines molecular-level constraints governing Fe(III) incorporation into LDH phases in low-carbon cements. The results offer transferable insights concerning the influence of LDH composition on the interfacial phase assemblages relevant to steel corrosion protection.

This study focuses on the regulatory effects of structural evolution and vacancy defects induced by Fe-ion substitution at the Mn site on the physical properties of gadolinium manganite (GdMnO 3 ) materials synthesized via the solid-phase reaction method. The single-phase structure of synthesized GdMn 1- x Fe x O 3 ceramics was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman analyses, and lattice deformation due to the substitution of Mn ions with Fe ions in GdMnO 3 was observed. X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the presence of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ in the GdMn 1- x Fe x O 3 samples, and their mutual interactions led to changes in their relative concentrations. Positron annihilation spectroscopy results indicated that Fe 3+ substitution significantly influences the size and concentration of vacancy defects in the GdMn 1- x Fe x O 3 system. Temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization measurements revealed that Fe-ion substitution could improve the magnetic properties of GdMnO 3 . Compared with the magnetic moment contribution from Fe ions, the double-exchange interaction between Mn 3+ and Mn 4+ ions, cation vacancies, and lattice distortion caused by Fe ion substitution exerted more dominant influence on the magnetic properties of GdMnO 3 . These results demonstrate that the introduction of vacancy defects and the conversion of Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ represent an effective strategy for optimizing the properties of the GdMnO 3 system.

The interaction between divalent iron (Fe(II)) and humic substances (HS) is crucial for geochemical cycles in terrestrial and aquatic environments, influencing soil phosphorus (P) cycling and aquatic eutrophication. However, the impact of Fe(II)-HS interactions on P sequestration remains unclear. This research employed controlled lab experiments and advanced characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), to study the mechanisms of P fixation by Fe(II)-HS complexes under neutral pH and anaerobic conditions. Results indicate that Fe(II) availability is crucial for P fixation, more so than HS content. Elevated Fe/P ratios boost P removal by encouraging vivianite formation, even in the presence of HS, reducing dissolved P to below 0.3 mg/L at Fe/P of 2.2. HS primarily hinders P adsorption through competitive ligand exchange. Solution pH also impacts P fixation, with higher pH levels (≥7) enhancing P immobilization. While HS binds Fe(II) and prevents hydrolysis, Fe(II) hydrolysis products like Fe(OH) 2 /Fe(OH) 3 − can co-precipitate and remove P. XRD analysis indicated vivianite crystals form at pH 7, but their diffraction peak intensity decreases under acidic or alkaline conditions, with formation controlled by Fe species and HS. The potential pathways of P in the Fe(II)-HS system include P combining with Fe(II) to form vivianite, P combining with HS to form HS-P composites, and P combining with Fe(II)-OM species to form carbon-containing vivianite. These insights improve understanding of the Fe-C-P biogeochemical cycle and P mobility in natural environments.

Iohexol can hardly be removed in conventional wastewater treatment processes due to its non-biodegradable and hydrophilic characteristics. In this study, a kinetic model was established to describe iohexol degradation in Fe (II)-activated persulfate system. The developed model can well predict iohexol degradation and evolution of sulfate radical with various initial iohexol and oxidant (ferrous iron and persulfate) concentrations under various water matrix. The rate constant of iohexol reacting with sulfate radical was calculated as (1.83 ± 0.10) × 10 9 M −1 s −1 . The effects of the two most common components in natural water bodies, chloride ion and natural organic matter (NOM) on iohexol degradation, were also studied. Both experimental data and model results showed that the low concentration of chloride ion promoted iohexol degradation while high concentration inhibited it, and NOM slightly inhibited iohexol degradation. Besides, radical quenching tests were employed to identify the main radicals formed in the system and further verified the model accuracy. The model is also capable of predicting the atrazine degradation with the correlation coefficients between the experimental data and predicted results above 0.97, suggesting the applicability of the established model for some other recalcitrant contaminant degradation in the Fe 2+ /PS system.

The use of antibiotics has become an indispensable part of the production and life of human society. Among them, sulfonamide antibiotics widely used in humans and animals are considered to be one of the most crucial antibiotics. However, antibiotics are difficult to degrade naturally, leading to an accumulation in the environment and a potential hazard to human health. In this paper, WS 2 as a co-catalyst could reduce trace Fe(III) to Fe(II) which exhibited a great activating ability to PS through the exposed W(IV) active sites, and formed the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle to degrade sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) continuously. This paper systematically discussed the degradation of SCP under different conditions in the PS/WS 2 /Fe(III) system, including the amount of WS 2 , Fe(III) concentration, PS concentration, initial pH, natural organic matter (NOM) and common anions ( NO 3 − , Cl − , HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − ). The experimental results showed that PS/WS 2 /Fe(III) system possessed a strong degradation ability for SCP in a wide pH range. NO 3 − and Cl − could promote the degradation of SCP a little. HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − could significantly inhibit the degradation of SCP. The main types of free radicals that degraded SCP were explored. In addition, the stability and reusability of WS 2 were examined, and two possible degradation pathways of SCP were proposed.

Iron-based carbon nanofibers (Fe-CNFs) have garnered significant attention due to their promising applications as functional materials or precursors in the field of catalysis, energy storage, and electromagnetic interference shielding. In this work, electrospun Fe3O4-CNFs were reduced under a H2/Ar atmosphere to obtain Fe-CNFs, and the reduction temperature and holding time were systematically optimized. Notably, a pronounced carbon gasification phenomenon was observed at elevated temperatures (>550 °C), leading to a complete consumption of the carbon matrix. The underlying mechanism was explored using temperature-programmed reduction with mass spectrometry (TPR-MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results suggest that the carbon gasification during the H2reduction process is primarily driven by the carbon-water reaction, which can be catalyzed by the in situ-formed Fe nanoparticles. As the temperature increases, various reactions—including hydrogen dissociation, H2spillover, carbon-water reaction, and Boudouard reaction—may progressively consume the carbon framework, ultimately leading to structural collapse and complete material loss. This study elucidates the underlying mechanism of carbon-water reaction and provides practical guidance for the optimization of synthesis parameters, thereby enhancing the yield and structural integrity of free-standing Fe-CNFs for their application in catalysis and energy storage-related fields.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been proven to be more effective for the treatment of hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI)) when modified with the transition metal Cu. In this study, biochar-supported Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles (Cu-nZVI/BC) were prepared and used for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The effects of the pH value, the initial concentration of Cr(VI), coexisting ions and humic acids (HA) were investigated. The compositional structures of Cu-nZVI/BC were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The maximum removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 50.57% (126.41 ± 3.75 mg g –1 ) for Cu-nZVI/BC at pH 2. The adsorption kinetic data were in agreement with the pseudo-second- order model, which confirmed that the adsorption step was a chemical adsorption and reduction process. The presence of Ca 2+ and NO 3 – had an inhibitory effect on Cr(VI) removal, while dHA increased the removal efficiency at high concentrations. This study proves that Cu-nZVI/BC removal of solution Cr(VI) is feasible and shows significant potential in practical applications.

Transition metal phosphides with excellent performance are one of the effective alternatives to noble metal catalysts in overall water splitting. In this paper, the Fe–NiCoP–MoO3 composite was prepared by a facile synthesis as the bifunctional electrocatalyst. Fe–NiCoP–MoO3 achieves an operating current density of 10 mA/cm2 at a low overpotential of 65 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction and drives an operating current density of 50 mA/cm2 at only 293 mV for oxygen evolution reaction. Significantly, Fe–NiCoP–MoO3 was employed as the anode and cathode for overall water splitting, which only requires a cell voltage of 1.586 V to reach 10 mA/cm2 as well as shows excellent stability. The electrocatalytic activity of Fe–NiCoP–MoO3 exceeds most of the recently reported typical bifunctional electrocatalysts. This may be due to the coupling effect between the polymetallic phosphides. In addition, heterogeneous catalysts generally expose more active sites than homogeneous catalysts. In addition, replacing MoO3 with WO3 and VO3 can also improve the performance of Fe–NiCoP. This work provides an idea for the modification of phosphides.
