Ni–Fe bimetallic carbon nanotube catalysts derived from a two-dimensional metalloporphyrin Fe-MOF precursor for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions

Yunyang Wu

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical half-reactions in energy conversion devices such as metal–air batteries and reversible fuel cells, and their sluggish kinetics severely limit the overall device performance. Therefore, the development of efficient, stable, and low-cost non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts is of great significance. In this study, a MOF-derived bifunctional electrocatalytic material (NiFe@CNT), featuring NiFe bimetallic alloys uniformly anchored within a carbon nanotube network, was successfully fabricated using a two-dimensional metalloporphyrin-based Fe-MOF precursor via metal site modulation by introducing Ni, combined with a high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. Structural characterization results indicate that NiFe@CNT possesses an intact three-dimensional CNT conductive network, a high degree of graphitization (ID/IG = 0.39), and uniformly dispersed NiFe alloy active phases. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that NiFe@CNT functions as a highly active bifunctional catalyst for both ORR and OER in alkaline environments. Regarding its ORR activity, the material exhibits a half-wave potential comparable to that of benchmark Pt/C, with reaction kinetics proceeding through an approximately four-electron transfer mechanism. In terms of OER performance, a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is attained at a modest overpotential of merely 1.514 V. In alkaline electrolyte, the ORR proceeds predominantly through a four-electron pathway converting O2 to H2O (O2 + 4H+ + 4e− → 2H2O), while the OER involves the reverse four-electron oxidation of hydroxide to produce molecular oxygen (2H2O → O2 + 4H+ + 4e−). Furthermore, durability assessments confirm that NiFe@CNT surpasses commercial noble metal benchmarks in long-term operational stability. This work presents a viable approach for fabricating advanced noble-metal-free oxygen electrocatalysts through two-dimensional MOF-derived engineering.

Fe-based catalyst for thermo-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation into ethanol: The essential role of water management and Fe-based carbide/oxide ratio

Xiaojie Liu,Zhifu Yu,Qi Li,Yang Wang,Xinze Bi,Kaixuan Huo,Dingyao Li,Zhiang Yuan,Yifan Yan,Shibin Li,Yiwu Lu,Qiang Liu,Wenhang Wang,Mingbo Wu

CO 2 hydrogenation to ethanol represents a pivotal pathway for valuable utilization of greenhouse gas CO 2 , yet conventional catalysts are still limited by active-phase instability and undesirable byproduct selectivity. Herein, we propose a dual-components catalyst system synergized by hydrophobic carbon-encapsulated Fe-based catalyst (NaFe@C) and K modified CuZnAl component (KCZA), which achieves ultra-high ethanol selectivity of 35% under optimized conditions (5 MPa and 320 °C). KCZA initiates the CO 2 activation via reverse water-gas shift reaction and supplies oxygen-containing intermediates (mainly CH x O*, x = 0, 1, or 2). NaFe@C component is mainly responsible for the C–O activation for CH x * formation and C–C coupling between CH x * and CH x O*, as well as the following hydrogenation step for ethanol synthesis. Notably, the hydrophobic carbon shell in NaFe@C plays a critical role in tailoring the oxidation behaviors of Fe-based active sites and optimizing the phase ratio of Fe 3 O 4 / χ -Fe 5 C 2 via water management. Multiple characterization and theoretical simulation results clarify that the unique electronic property of Fe-based active sites endowed by the optimized phase ratio is beneficial to boost the ethanol synthesis performance by balancing the coverage of key intermediates and lowering the energy barrier of essential steps. This work is promising to provide guidance for the rational design of advanced catalysts for targeted transformation of CO 2 or syngas into ethanol and beyond.

Role of Fe(IV) and Fe(V) in micropollutant abatement by visible-light-activated ferrate(VI) via ligand-to-metal charge transfer

Peijie Li,Jinchuan Lian,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Xinsheng Luo,Kunyu Chen,Congwei Luo,Ruimin Mu,Daoji Wu,Tao Yang

Although light-assisted ferrate (Fe(VI)) activation offers an activator-free strategy for micropollutant abatement, how visible light generates Fe(V)/Fe(IV) remains unclear at the molecular level. Here, five narrow-band LEDs (440–525 nm) were used to link Fe(VI) photochemistry with pollutant oxidation kinetics and iron-species contributions. At 440 nm, Vis-LED/Fe(VI) degraded 79.6–99.3% of six electron-rich micropollutants within 3 min, increasing rate constants by up to 4.3-fold relative to Fe(VI). Scavenging experiments and kinetic modeling identified Fe(V) and Fe(IV) as the dominant reactive species, together accounting for over 96% of diclofenac sodium (DCF) degradation. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations showed that visible excitation induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), which elongated a Fe-O bond from 1.654 to 2.025 Å and generated an Fe(V)-oxyl excited state that abstracted a hydrogen atom from water to give Fe(V). The apparent quantum yield of Fe(VI) decomposition decreased from 0.140 to 0.104 mol einstein −1 as wavelength increased from 440 to 525 nm, consistent with the charge-transfer component being photochemically productive. The system performance improved with light intensities and Fe(VI) concentrations, but declined under alkaline conditions and in humic-acid-rich water. These results establish visible-light activation of Fe(VI) via LMCT and identify Fe(V)/Fe(IV) as the oxidants responsible for micropollutant abatement.

Poly lactic acid production using the ring opening polymerization (ROP) method using Lewis acid surfactant combined iron (Fe) catalyst (Fe(DS)3)

T. Widjaja,N. Hendrianie,S. Nurkhamidah,A. Altway,Bayu Yusuf,Fakhrizal F,Aisyah Alifatul Zahidah Rohma,Atha Pahlevi

LASC catalyst synthesis process was carried out using iron metal (Fe) and its characterization properties were tested. There are five stages carried out, namely, the manufacture of the LASC Fe(DS)3 catalyst, lactic acid dehydration, polycondensation of lactic acid into l -lactic acid oligomers (OLLA), depolymerization of oligomers into l -lactide, and the ROP process to convert l -lactide into Polymers. l -lactic acid (PLLA). The analysis used is as follows, Karl-Fisher; Spectroscopy Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR); and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HNMR); Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC); Thermogravimetry Gravity Analysis (TGA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Based on the experimental results, the catalyst Fe(DS) 3 has a crystallinity value of 24% which indicates an amorphous nature and is easy to react. The value of the thermal stability of the catalyst is at 180 °C where the catalyst is able to process up to a temperature of 180  ° C. Each step of the ROP is validated by FTIR analysis which shows that the components of the group are in accordance with the expected product. The comparison of the crystallinity values of PLA produced with FeCl 3 and Fe(DS) 3 were 37.5 and 49%, respectively. Melting temperature (Tm) values are 111 and 107  ° C, respectively, Td values are 327 and 352 °C, and the resulting molecular weights are 23,720 and 20,232 g/mol. Based on the results obtained, it can be seen that the use of a LASC catalyst in the form of Fe(DS) 3 is more effective than without using a LASC catalyst.

Developments of efficient dithionite-zerovalent iron/persulfate systems with accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle for PAHs removal in water and soils

Maolin Wang,Yaling Wang,Xudong Jing,Jiahui Xu,Min Li,Qing Xie,Xiyun Cai

Iron-activated persulfate (PS) systems commonly suffer from the poor Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle in groundwater and soils, due to the rapid oxidation of Fe(II) by both PS-related and naturally occurring oxidative substances. Maintaining the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle is necessary to achieve the high efficiency and stability of iron-activated persulfate systems toward aromatic contaminants (e.g., PAHs) in groundwater and soils. Herein, we discover the mixtures of dithionite (DTN) and zerovalent iron (ZVI) to synergistically activate PS, and develop highly efficient, stable DTN-ZVI/PS systems for PAHs removal in groundwater and soils. DTN and intermediates sulfite/thiosulfate initiated reduction of ZVI-derived Fe(III) species in DTN-ZVI/PS systems. This reaction accelerated the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and coated ZVI with FeS x , both favoring the generation of HO and SO 4 − . DTN-ZVI/PS exhibited Nap removal of >90% in water during 11 of 15 supplementations of Nap and/or PS, 1.4–2.4 times ZVI/PS. Similarly, 0.47–4.3 fold increments of Nap removal k obs were obtained in five chemical types of groundwater, and 1.3–2.4 fold increments of PAHs removal in soils. This study may provide a technical basis to develop new Fe-activated oxidation systems for groundwater and soil remediation .

In-situ corrosion induced Zr-doped Ni/Fe (oxy)hydroxide layer on Ni-Fe foam realizing efficient electrocatalysis for oxygen evolution reaction

Shiwei Song,Yanhui Wang,Xueqing Tian,Fanjia Sun,Yungang Yuan,Wei Li,Jianbing Zang

The synthesis of efficient and economical electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) by the energy-saving approach has far-reaching significance for the production of hydrogen by water electrolysis. Herein, a facile route was proposed to prepare Zr-doped Ni/Fe (oxy)hydroxide layer grown on Ni-Fe foam (Zr-NiFe(OH) x /NFF) by chloride ions in-situ corrosion strategy in “NaCl-ZrOCl 2 ” mixed solution. The smooth NFF surface was effectively transformed into a rough multimetallic (oxy)hydroxide nanosheet with high electrochemical specific surface area and strong bonding to the substrate, resulting in excellent interface performance for mass transfer and charge transfer. Specifically, the incorporation of Zr 4+ regulated the electronic environment around the Ni/Fe center, as a result, adsorption energies were optimized and the inherent OER activity of active sites was enhanced. The Zr-NiFe(OH) x /NFF self-supporting electrode exhibited outstanding OER electrocatalytic activity where low overpotentials of 211 and 245 mV were obtained to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 respectively, along with impressive durability for 40 h. This work provides a simple strategy for low-cost and mass production of the robust OER self-supporting electrocatalysts.

Mechanism of metal sulfides accelerating the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and promoting the degradation of As(III) by oxalate

Junhui Yang,Wenlei Wang,Jinglin Yin,Yanmei Li,Ziyang Xiang,Yi Peng,Ying Yan,Jing Wang,Hongbo Xiao

In this study, a matrix composite material of CdZnS and α-FeOOH on carbon cloth (CZS@FeOOH@CC) was prepared by a hydrothermal method , and was used for the degradation of As(III). The composite material has good photocatalytic activity of removing As(III) in the presence of oxalate. CZS@FeOOH@CC can completely degrade 10 mg/L As(III) within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The influence factors of CZS@FeOOH@CC composite material on catalytic oxidation of As(III) were also studied in the oxalate system. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of As(III) is affected by the oxalate concentration in the reaction system, and the atmosphere plays a major role in the degradation of As(III). Under visible light, oxalate first combines with Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxide to form Fe(III)-oxalate complex, and then the Fe(III)-oxalate composite is activated to produce·C 2 O 4 − . In the presence of oxygen, Fe(II) readily reacts with O 2 and oxidizes to Fe(III). The introduction of CdZnS promoted the separation of interfacial electron holes, and accelerated the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). This study provides a feasible and simple method for accelerating the catalytic removal of heavy metals from wastewater by iron-based materials.

Strongly enhanced Fenton-like oxidation (Fe/peroxydisulfate) by BiOI under visible light irradiation: A novel and green strategy for Fe(III) reduction

Yongfei Tong,Peng Zhou,Yang Liu,Ningruo Wang,Wei Li,Feng Cheng,Bo Yang,Juan Liang,Yongli Zhang,Bo Lai

In order to accelerate the photo-Fenton reaction process of Fe(III) under visible light irradiation, BiOI was introduced into the Fe(III)/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The catalytic oxidation performance of vis-light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was evaluated using bisphenol AF (BPAF) as a representative organic contaminant . Within 30 min, nearly 100% of BPAF was degraded, proving that the system had an excellent ability to degrade organic pollutants in water. Free radical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR), and molecular probing experiments determined that the main reactive species in the system were hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ). The comparative experiments showed that the degradation rates were closely related to the PDS consumption, while the Fe(II) absorbed on the surface of BiOI was responsible for the PDS consumption. The production pathway of Fe(II) was analyzed by XRD, FTIR and XPS characterization, the Fe(III) on the surface of BiOI was reduced by photogenerated electrons to generate Fe(II). The result confirmed that the reduction of Fe(III) by photogenerated electrons could effectively inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs, and accelerate the reduction progress of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle that was the rate-limiting step in PDS activation. Afterwards, a reliable mechanism for degradation of BPAF in visible light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was proposed. Finally, the influence of reactant dosages, visible light intensity , initial pH, humic acid (HA) and anions in the solution on the degradation of BPAF were discussed.

The effect of Fe in the rapid thermal explosion synthesis and the high-temperature corrosion behavior of porous Co-Al-Fe intermetallic

Zhichao Shang,Xiaoping Cai,Farshid Pahlevani,Yan Zheng,Akbar Hojjati-Najafabadi,Xinran Gao,Baojing Zhang,Peizhong Feng

High porosity Co-Al-Fe intermetallic with 3D-microstructures were one-step synthesized via a novel thermal explosion reaction. A link between pore structure and permeability was established using 3D-XRM technology. The corrosion resistance of the samples with different Fe contents was investigated at 900 °C under an oxygen/sulphur atmosphere for up to 120 h. The results showed that the pore structure of the samples remains stable, and the internal matrices are intact due to the formation of a thin protective layer of Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 on the surface of the product skeleton. In addition, inward diffusion of S leads to the formation of FeS nodules.

Enhanced Fenton-like oxidation (Vis/Fe(III)/Peroxydisulfate): The role of iron species and the Fe(III)-LVF complex in levofloxacin degradation

Afang Wang,Yang Shi,Yang Liu,Wei Li,Heng Zhang,Xiaoqiang Dai,Li Luo,Gang Yao,Bo Lai

Traditional Fenton and Fenton-like processes are affected by the sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) regeneration and Fe(III) accumulation. This research revealed that the degradation efficiency of pollutants was significantly increased by adding Fe(III) to the Vis/PS system. A mechanism is proposed in which photosensitivity pollutants can boost Fe(III) to produce Fe(II) under visible light irradiation. Intriguingly, Fe(III) rapidly combines with LVF in aqueous environments to form Fe(III)-LVF complexes. This research confirms that Fe(III)-pollutant complexes are generated. The proportion of complexes are calculated using mathematical models. Furthermore, the production of Fe(IV) is verified in the Vis/PS/Fe(III) system, which also plays a vital role in boosting LVF degradation. Overall, this study provides comprehensive insights into the degradation mechanism of micropollutants, involving hydroxyl radical ( OH ∙ ), Fe(IV), and Fe(III)-LVF complexes, providing an efficient and green strategy for contaminant removal during wastewater treatment .

A facile sulfur-assisted method to synthesize porous alveolate Fe/g-C3N4 catalysts with ultra-small cluster and atomically dispersed Fe sites

Sufeng An,Guanghui Zhang,Jiaqiang Liu,Keyan Li,Gang Wan,Yan Liang,Donghui Ji,Jeffrey T. Miller,Chunshan Song,Wei Liu,Zhongmin Liu,Xinwen Guo

Heterogeneous catalysts with ultra-small clusters and atomically dispersed (USCAD) active sites have gained increasing attention in recent years. However, developing USCAD catalysts with high-density metal sites anchored in porous nanomaterials is still challenging. Here, through the template-free S-assisted pyrolysis of low-cost Fe-salts with melamine (MA), porous alveolate Fe/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts with high-density (Fe loading up to 17.7 wt%) and increased USCAD Fe sites were synthesized. The presence of a certain amount of S species in the Fe-salts/MA system plays an important role in the formation of USCAD S-Fe-salt/CN catalysts; the S species act as a “sacrificial carrier” to increase the dispersion of Fe species through Fe-S coordination and generate porous alveolate structure by escaping in the form of SO 2 during pyrolysis . The S-Fe-salt/CN catalysts exhibit greatly promoted activity and reusability for degrading various organic pollutants in advanced oxidation processes compared to the corresponding Fe-salt/CN catalysts, due to the promoted accessibility of USCAD Fe sites by the porous alveolate structure. This S-assisted method exhibits good feasibility in a large variety of S species (thiourea, S powder, and NH 4 SCN) and Fe salts, providing a new avenue for the low-cost and large-scale synthesis of high-density USCAD metal/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts.

Fe-Loaded MOF-545(Fe): Peroxidase-Like Activity for Dye Degradation Dyes and High Adsorption for the Removal of Dyes from Wastewater

Chuang Zhang,Haichao Li,Chen Li,Zhengqiang Li

Methods to remove dye pollutants with natural enzyme, like horseradish peroxidase (HRP), are still limited due to high costs and low stability levels. The development of such a method with similar enzymatic activity is important and could be helpful in wastewater disposal. A metal organic framework material, Fe-loaded MOF-545 (Fe), was synthesized in our study as a new way to remove dyes due to its peroxidase-like activity. The structural characterizations of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis absorption spectra, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) was investigated under different pH and temperature conditions. Because of the Fe added into the MOF-545 structure, the absorption of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) for acid (anionic) dyes (methyl orange (MO)) was better than for basic (cationic) dyes (methylene blue (MB)). The Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) could give a significant color fading for MO and MB over a short time (about two hours) with peroxidase-like activity. The remarkable capacity of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) to remove the MO or MB is due to not only physical adsorption, but also degradation of the MO and MB with POD-like activity. Therefore, Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) has significant potential regarding dye removal from wastewater.Keywords:Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe);peroxidase-like activity;dye absorption;dye degradation;wastewater
