The regulation mechanism of carboxylate/hydroxylate organic acid ligands coordinating with Fe3+ on the flotation separation of scheelite from calcite

Zheyu Huang,Jingzhong Kuang,Wenxin Hua,Tingsheng Qiu,Mingming Yu,Lei Wang

Fe-organic complexes enabled selective flotation separation of scheelite and calcite. • Ligand structure governed Fe 3+ coordination stability and interfacial selectivity. • Fe-PA revealed higher calcite selectivity and depression efficiency than Fe-SA. • Fe-PA formed stable multidentate chelates with enhanced electronic delocalization. The similar surface physicochemical properties of scheelite and calcite hinder their selective separation due to the limited selectivity of depressants. In this study, Fe–organic complexes were prepared using succinic acid (SA) and pyrogallol (PA) as ligands to regulate scheelite/calcite flotation separation. Their coordination structures and interfacial mechanisms were elucidated using solution speciation analysis, UV–Vis spectroscopy, TEM, adsorption measurements, contact angle measurements, zeta potential analysis, XPS and DFT calculations. The Fe-organic complexes significantly enhanced flotation separation, with Fe-PA showing superior selective inhibition and yielding a tungsten concentrate with a WO₃ grade of 70.49% and recovery of 84.79%. Fe 3+ forms a stable coordination complex with ligands in a 1:2 ratio in weakly acidic conditions. SA interacted with Fe 3+ primarily through its carboxylate groups, whereas PA exhibited coordination behavior associated with its ortho-positioned phenolic hydroxyl groups. The stronger electron-donating ability of Fe-PA promoted Fe O coordination with active sites on calcite, giving an adsorption energy of −56.67 kJ·mol −1 , while its affinity toward scheelite was weaker. Consequently, Fe-PA selectively modified the calcite surface and inhibited BHA adsorption, resulting in different interfacial adsorption behaviors and providing insights into the relationship between ligand structure and interfacial adsorption behavior. Decoration of Fe3+ on carboxyl microporous organic network to fabricate magnetic porous carbon for efficient adsorption and removal of cationic dyes

Xin-Qiao He,Yuan-Yuan Cui,Yan Zhang,Hai-Tao Li,Cheng-Xiong Yang

Fabrication of novel magnetic porous materials for efficient magnetic adsorption and removal of environmental contaminants still remains great important and interesting in environmental science. Magnetic microporous organic networks (MONs) are a recent class of magnetic microporous materials highly potential in diverse areas. However, the strategies for the fabrication of magnetic MONs or MONs-derived magnetic adsorbents are still quite limited. To further develop novel method for the fabrication of MONs-derived magnetic adsorbents and to extend the application of MONs in environmental science, here we reported a convenient and new method by decorating Fe 3+ on MON-2COOH to fabricate MON-derived magnetic porous carbon (MPC) for efficient adsorption and removal of cationic dyes from aqueous solution. The Fe 3+ was firstly decorated on -COOH enriched MON-2COOH and then calcined to produce MPC under Ar atmosphere. The obtained MPC were well characterized and conducted to the adsorption of cationic dyes. The porous, negatively charged and unsaturated bond contained MPC gave extremely fast adsorption kinetics for cationic dyes via electrostatic, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The adsorption of malachite green on MPC was fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic, Langmuir adsorption and monolayer adsorption models, and gave much faster adsorption kinetics and larger adsorption capacities than anionic dyes. Furthermore, the good superparamagnetic behavior and reusability made MPC could be easily recycled and reused. This work not only provided a new strategy to synthesis MON-derived MPC, but also possessed the potential of magnetic MONs-based adsorbents for the adsorption and removal of cationic dyes or trace contaminants in environment.

Precise Control of Fe3+ Incorporation in Poly(heptazine imide) for Modulating Electronic Structure and Enhanced Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Yu Zhang,Xuezhong Gong,Zhaocen Dong,Meng Wang,Zhijie Wu,Yibo Zhou,Haoxuan Zhang,Meili Guan,Ihor Rusetskyi,Jianguo Tang

In this study, Fe 3+ -modified poly(heptazine imide) (denoted as FeO x /H-PHI, abbreviated as FePHI for simplicity) was constructed via an impregnation method by introducing Fe 3+ into Na + -intercalated PHI (NaPHI). The incorporated Fe 3+ effectively substituted Na + in the PHI framework, forming highly dispersed FeO x clusters. This modification significantly narrowed the material bandgap from 2.67 to 2.53 eV, extending the visible-light absorption edge beyond 600 nm. Simultaneously, the FeO x clusters acted as efficient electron traps, suppressing the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. The optimized FePHI-50 catalyst (with an Fe loading of 4.48 wt.%) exhibited remarkably enhanced visible-light activity in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol. The performance improvement was attributed to the facilitated hole migration and reactant activation mechanism promoted by the Fe sites. Radical trapping experiments further confirmed that photogenerated holes (h + ) served as the primary active species. This work provides new insights into the structure–activity relationships of metal-doped polymer photocatalysts and offers a theoretical basis for designing efficient solar-driven organic synthesis systems.

Charge-regulated and enthalpy-driven supramolecular assembly of boron-doped carbon dots enables robust ferric ion (Fe3+) sensing in food matrices

Yu Wang,Yushuang Wei,Xinke Zhang,Xiangyang Li,Yang Yan,Yingpeng Wu,Kai Yang,Bing Yuan

Background The sensitive quantification of trace metal ions, particularly Fe 3+ , in complex environmental and food matrices remains a formidable challenge due to severe matrix-induced interference. While fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are widely employed, their quenching mechanisms are frequently oversimplified as isolated single-particle events, neglecting the critical role of colloidal behavior and interparticle dynamics. Consequently, conventional CD probes often suffer from poor signal stability in real-world applications. Therefore, there is a pressing need to establish rigorous physical chemistry frameworks to rationally design CD sensors that utilize controlled collective behaviors to achieve robust, matrix-resistant target recognition. Results Herein, we demonstrate that boron-doped carbon dots (BCDs) enable highly selective Fe 3+ quantification via a distinct, charge-regulated supramolecular assembly mechanism rather than conventional molecular-scale quenching. Spectroscopic analyses reveal that specific Fe 3+ coordination with oxygen-containing surface ligands initiates ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). This interaction progressively neutralizes the surface charge of BCDs, triggering spontaneous and enthalpy-driven interparticle bridging (Δ H  = −24.54 kJ mol −1 ). Both DLS measurements and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that optimal fluorescence attenuation occurs exclusively when these BCD-Fe 3+ complexes reach a near-neutral charge state, forcing them into compact, structurally constrained assemblies. Unlike generic aggregation, this specific assembly is highly resistant to abundant salts and biomacromolecules. Exploiting this locked-in signal readout, the BCD sensor accurately quantified Fe 3+ in highly complex, real-world matrices—including milk, orange juice, and lake water—achieving high recoveries (95.2–104.1%) that perfectly matched conventional ICP-MS analysis. Significance and novelty This work reframes carbon-dot-based sensing from an empirical observation of isolated nanoparticle quenching to a rationally designed, charge-regulated collective assembly phenomenon. By deciphering the thermodynamic and electrostatic principles driving this cooperative interfacial interaction, we provide a robust conceptual framework for designing next-generation fluorescent nanoprobes whose signal stability and selectivity in complex matrices are intrinsically governed by controlled supramolecular organization.

A novel flexible V-shaped dicarboxylate Eu-based MOF for multifunctional fluorescent detection of Fe3+, MnO4− and nitrofurantoin and mechanistic study

Weiwei Cheng,Shuyue Xu,Chengnan Wang,Jinyi Dong,Weina Jiang,Yunshan Xue

Industrial emissions of heavy metal ions and oxygen-containing anions, antibiotic residues caused by pharmaceutical and agricultural activities, and toxic ions such as Fe 3+ introduced by nuclear industry leaks, collectively form a complex water pollution. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a novel europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) through a hydrothermal approach employing a flexible V-shaped dicarboxylic acid ligand. The single crystal X-ray diffraction results indicate that the Eu-MOF belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. Its basic structural unit is a one-dimensional coordination chain, which is further assembled by hydrogen bonding and π - π stacking between molecules, ultimately forming a stable three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Leveraging the intense red emission of Eu 3+ and its robust structural integrity, the Eu-MOF demonstrates remarkable sensitivity and specificity in the fluorescence detection of Fe 3+ , MnO 4 − , and nitrofurantoin (NFT) in aqueous solutions, featuring low detection limits and substantial quenching constants. Mechanism studies have shown that the structure of the material remains stable during the sensing process, and fluorescence quenching is mainly caused by the combined effects of static quenching, competitive absorption, and photo-induced electron transfer. This research introduces a dependable multifunctional luminescent platform for the swift and precise monitoring of various hazardous environmental contaminants.

A Self-antibacterial Chitosan-based Polymeric Fluorescent Probe with a Dual-lock Strategy for Ultrafast Detection of Fe3+ in Water System

Liu Xin-Xin,Wang Meng-Ping,Liu Yue,Wang Shi-Yu,Feng Xia,Zhao Guang-Jiu

In this work, a novel polymeric fluorescent probe, chitosan grafting coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (CSC) was designed and synthesized by a one-step condensation in solution. The probe exhibited dual functionality, serving as a highly selective sensor for Fe 3+ and demonstrating intrinsic antibacterial activity. Coumarin modification imparts unique morphological characteristics and enhances water solubility in chitosan. The CSC probe demonstrated blue fluorescence quenching upon Fe 3+ addition, and the presence of multiple binding sites for Fe 3+ on the chitosan chains endowed CSC with rapid recognition capability (within 30 s) and high sensitivity detection limit (2.58 µmol/L). The ultrafast and specific detection of Fe 3+ was attributed to the dual-lock coordination cage formed between the abundant hydroxyl groups of chitosan and the carbonyl group of coumarin. Fluorescence quenching primarily originates from the fast formation of complexes via effective orbital overlap and excited-state electron transfer from the fluorophore to Fe 3+ . Its good photostability and acceptable reusability confirm its potential for practical and cost-effective sensing applications. The CSC probe was successfully applied for the quantitative detection of Fe 3+ in real water samples and the study of effective antibacterial activity. This work presents a multifunctional platform that combines sensitive metal ion sensing with antimicrobial properties, which holds significant promise for environmental monitoring and biomedical applications. Preparation of carbon-dot-based red-fluorescent polyamide 6 nanocomposites via in situ polymerization for anti-counterfeiting/encryption and Fe3+ detection

Dongliang Qian,Jianjun Wang,Jun Sun,Guibin Li,Guoqiang Chen,Chuanxiang Qin,Lixing Dai

Carbon-dot-based red-fluorescent materials (CRFMs) have attracted significant attention due to advantages such as excellent interference resistance. However, the development of solid-state CRFMs has been hindered by aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). In situ polymerization can significantly improve the migration resistance and dispersion of fluorescent nanofillers within polymers, thereby suppressing ACQ. Herein, novel solid-state CRFMs were successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization. Quasi-spherical o -phenylenediamine-based carbon dots (O-pd-CDs) with an average particle size of 2.39 nm were hydrothermally synthesized, demonstrating deep-red fluorescence (633 nm) in formic acid, with an average fluorescence lifetime (τ ave ) of 2.41 ns and an absolute fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 17.51%. O-pd-CDs feature nitrogen-doped highly conjugated graphitic carbon nuclei and amorphous surface layers enriched with amino and hydroxyl groups, while exhibiting exceptional thermal stability within the range of 150−272 °C. Subsequently, amide-bonded O-pd-CDs-based polyamide 6 nanocomposites (PA6@O-pd-CDs-x, where x represents the mass percentage of O-pd-CDs relative to caprolactam without the % sign) were successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization, which effectively suppressed ACQ. PA6@O-pd-CDs-x-based fluorescent nanofibrous membranes (PA6@O-pd-CDs-x-FNFM) with bright red fluorescence (596−601 nm) were fabricated via electrospinning, exhibiting excellent ultraviolet resistance, with a τ ave of 1.91−2.86 ns and an absolute fluorescence QY of 1.01−1.34%. Moreover, PA6@O-pd-CDs-x-FNFM exhibit excellent performance in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. Based on red fluorescence quenching, PA6@O-pd-CDs-1.5-FNFM exhibits a wide detection range (0−0.5 mM) and a low limit of detection (2.05 μM) for Fe 3+ in water, with excellent anti-interference capability. The fluorescence quenching observed when PA6@O-pd-CDs-1.5-FNFM contacts Fe 3+ is mainly attributed to static quenching and redox reactions.

Eu(III) Complexes Coated WD-53 Modified Spherical SiO2 Core-shell Composite Material for Fluorescence Detection of 1-HP and Fe3+

Chen Licong,Shi Rui,Han Yunfei,Wang Limei,Li Xingyun,Wang Zhongzhi

1-Hydroxypyrene (1-HP) is the final metabolite of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the human body, and Fe 3+ is an important trace element for human growth and metabolism. When 1-HP or Fe 3+ is detected in human urine, it indicates that there is a problem with the human health condition. The detection of 1-HP and Fe 3+ in urine can reflect the health status of the human body. In this work, Eu(III) complexes coated silane coupling agent (WD-53) modified spherical SiO 2 core-shell composite material (SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu) was prepared and used as the fluorescent probe for detecting 1-HP and Fe 3+ . The fluorescence intensity of SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu with the same mass concentration is 1.37 times that of L-Eu, while the content of Eu 3+ in SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu is only about one-third of L-Eu. Moreover, the dispersion stability of SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu in solvents is much higher than that of L-Eu. Furthermore, SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu exhibits the sensitive response to 1-HP and Fe 3+ without interference from inorganic salts, urea, glucose and other components. The fluorescence quenching constants for detecting 1-HP and Fe 3+ are 9.62 × 10 5 M − 1 and 5.29 × 10 3 M − 1 , respectively, and the limits of detection are 5.93 × 10 − 6 M and 1.08 × 10 − 3 M, respectively. We further employed the SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu composite material within a Tris-HCl buffer to detect 1-HP and Fe 3+ , respectively, and obtained Stern-Volmer quenching constants (K sv ) of 3.662 × 10 5 M − 1 and 1.957 × 10 3 M − 1 . Compared to L-Eu, composite material SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu has higher fluorescence efficiency, better dispersion stability and chemical stability. Therefore, SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu is considered a promising material for detecting 1-HP and Fe 3+ in urine.

Efficient Blue-Violet-Light-Excitable Near-Infrared Luminescence in Fe3+ Activated Phosphors With High Internal Quantum Efficiency and Superior Thermal Stability

Siqi Zhang,Minnan Jiang,Haixia Zheng,Xinyu Liu,Li Li,Zhiyu Yang,Faling Ling,Yongjie Wang,Xianju Zhou

Trivalent iron (Fe 3+ ) has attracted extensive attention as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective near-infrared (NIR) emitting activator ion. However, its weak absorption in the blue-violet light region and relatively low internal quantum efficiency (IQE) have long constrained its practical applications. In this study, a series of Ca 3 Ga 2-x Sn 2 GeO 12 : xFe 3+ NIR phosphors with a cubic garnet structure was successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Efficient NIR luminescence under long-wave ultraviolet (LWUV) chip excitation was observed, exhibiting broadband NIR emission centered at 740 nm. Remarkably, the phosphor achieves an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) as high as 82.3%, representing the highest efficiency reported to date for Fe 3+ -doped NIR phosphors under blue-violet light excitation. Temperature-dependent luminescence analysis reveals excellent thermal stability: the integrated emission intensity at 423 K retains 67.06% of its initial value at room temperature. A prototype NIR phosphor-converted LED (pc-LED) device fabricated with the studied phosphor and a commercial chip (400–410 nm) exhibits stable electroluminescence performance and good output power conversion. In summary, the Ca 3 Ga 2-x Sn 2 GeO 12 : xFe 3+ phosphor, with its efficient luminescence under blue-violet light excitation, outstanding thermal stability, and temperature-independent emission peak position, demonstrates significant application potential in the field of high-efficiency and high-stability NIR light sources.

L-Cysteine boosts Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling in Fe-doped cellulose-derived hydrothermal carbonation carbon for enhanced peroxydisulfate activation and diclofenac degradation

Fanjiang Yang,Siwei Kang,Chao Zhang,Jiaqin Deng,Lu Du,Haoxiang Zhong,Meifang Li,Chunfang Tang,Yuan Ouyang,Zhiming Liu,Zhihang Yuan,Shaohan Li

L-cysteine (L-Cys) is an ideal cocatalyst that enhances the redox cycle of transition metals and accelerates chemical processes, widely used for promoting pollutant degradation in homogeneous systems. However, its role in heterogeneous systems, mechanisms and pathways, remains unclear. In this study, iron-based hydrothermal carbonation carbon (HTCC-Fe) was prepared by reconstituting reed cellulose through hydrothermal carbonization, acid etching, and Fe doping methods. L-Cys promoted the conversion of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , which in turn strengthened peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation and increased reactive species formation in the HTCC-Fe/PDS system, with •OH serving as the primary contributor to diclofenac (DCF) degradation, followed by 1 O 2 and O 2 •− . This degradation occurred through pathways including hydroxylation, dehydration, dechlorination, and C–N bond cleavage. As a result, the HTCC-Fe/PDS/L-Cys system achieved a 41.5% higher DCF degradation efficiency than the HTCC/PDS system, coupled with broad pH applicability, strong resistance to anions interference, and effective DCF removal (>70%) in real water matrices. By elucidating the previously unclear role of L-Cys in heterogeneous systems, this work revealed its co-catalytic mechanism in promoting electron transfer and regulating radical/non-radical pathways for enhanced pollutant degradation.

“Signal-Switching” Fluorescence Sensing of Fe3+ and Ascorbic Acid by Songaria Cynomorium Polysaccharide-Doped Carbon Dots of the Tibetan Medicinal Herb

Huan Wang,Tianfeng Ma,Wencheng Mu,Cailin Wang,Siqi Sheng,Yanyan Jia,Yongchang Lu

The Songaria Cynomorium polysaccharide-doped carbon dots (SP-CDs) were synthesized by carbonization-heating method. Songaria Cynomorium polysaccharide (PS) was the carbon source. Ethylenediamine (EDA), phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ), and concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) were dopants, respectively. The SP-CDs exhibited the maximum fluorescence emission wavelength of 540 nm under the excitation wavelength of 485 nm (“ON” state). After the introduction of Fe 3+ with an intermediate bridging effect, the fluorescence intensity of SP-CDs was quenched due to the formation of the complex (SP-CDs/Fe 3+ ) between SP-CDs and Fe 3+ (“OFF” state). Subsequently, the fluorescence signal returned to “ON” due to the redox reaction between AA and Fe 3+ when ascorbic acid was introduced into SP-CDs/Fe 3+ solution. Therefore, the synthesized SP-CDs could be used as a “switch type” fluorescence sensor for detecting Fe 3+ and AA. The analysis revealed that the linear range of Fe 3+ extended from 0.05 to 500.00 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.02 μM (S/ N = 3). The scope of analysis for AA was determined to be within the range of 0.65–400.00 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.09 μM ( S/N = 3). Furthermore, the recommended fluorescence sensor was successfully employed for quantitatively detecting Fe 3+ and AA in serum samples.

The assembly effects of the inks were explored under different conditions, including pH, temperature, concentration and surface tension. The optimal self-assembly conditions of the inks were determined using the controlled variable method.FindingsThe results demonstrated the successful preparation of P(St-BA-MAA)@PGA-Fe3+PCCI. The metal polyphenol network film composed of GA and Fe3+was successfully coated on the surface of P(St-BA-MAA) seed microspheres. The assembly mechanism of the inks was investigated, indicating that at a diethylene glycol (DEG, C4H10O3) concentration of 0.3 wt% and pH of 7, bright noniridescent structural colors could be formed on fabric surfaces after self-assembly by PCCI at 60 °C for 10 min. Furthermore, the mechanical fastness of the structural colors was enhanced due to the adherence of the soft shell composed of P(St-BA-MAA) and GA.Originality/valueUtilizing a cost-effective approach and a diverse array of readily available raw materials, we have successfully prepared P(St-BA-MAA)@PGA-Fe3+PCCI, which boasts superior performance and offers fabrics a range of unique coloring styles. This innovation paves the way for potential applications of structural colors in practical production, thereby broadening their realm of utility.
