The development of composite materials with excellent thermal conductivity is attracting extensive attention to meet the increasing heat concentration challenges in both power and electronic equipment. Previous strategies for improving the thermal conductivities usually accompanied by the cost of mechanical strength. Herein, we propose a new strategy for developing both mechanically strong and thermally conductive composite films. The aramid nanofibers (ANF) are well prepared with introducing Ag nanoflakes and graphene oxide (GO) via vacuum-assisted filtration and hot-pressing treatment. Results indicate the synergistic effects of low dimension materials have resulted in a tightly arranged phonon network construction. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the prepared ANF/Ag/GO film reaches 9.84 W m −1 K −1 , about 371% higher than that of pure ANF. Meanwhile, the strong hydrogen bond formed between the functional group of GO and the amide group of ANFs plays a synergistic strengthening and toughening role at the complex interface, and the tensile strength reaches 231 MPa. We believe that these findings shed some light on the design and fabrication of multifunctional materials for thermal management applications.

Catalysts for the electrolysis of water are critical in the production of hydrogen for the energy industry. The use of strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) to modulate the dispersion, electron distribution, and geometry of active metals is an effective strategy for improving catalytic performance. However, in currently used catalysts, the supporting effect does not significantly contribute directly to catalytic activity. Consequently, the continued investigation of SMSI, using active metals to stimulate the supporting effect for catalytic activity, remains very challenging. Herein, the atomic layer deposition technique was employed to prepare an efficient catalyst composed of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) deposited on nickel-molybdate (NiMoO 4 ) nanorods. Nickel-molybdate’s oxygen vacancies (V o ) not only help anchor highly-dispersed Pt NPs with low loading but also strengthen the SMSI. The valuable electronic structure modulation between Pt NPs and V o resulted in a low overpotential of the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, returning results of 190 mV and 296 mV, respectively, at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Ultimately, an ultralow potential (1.515 V) for the overall decomposition of water was achieved at 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming state-of-art catalysts based on the Pt/C || IrO 2 couple (1.668 V). This work aims to provide reference and a concept for the design of bifunctional catalysts that apply the SMSI effect to achieve a simultaneous catalytic effect from the metal and its support.

The interfacial interaction between poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly (glycolic acid) (PGA) is poor although the blending of PLLA and PGA may combine the advantages of both, which seriously affects the mechanical properties of PLLA/PGA bone scaffold. In this study, PLLA chains were grafted onto graphene oxide (GO) by ring-opening polymerization reaction, and the modified GO was used as nanofiller to increase the interfacial interaction for PLLA/PGA scaffold fabricated by selective laser sintering (SLS). The result indicated that GO grafted with PLLA chains reduced the interfacial tension between GO and PLLA from 24.09 mN/m to 3.74 mN/m, thus drawing GO from PGA phase to the interface between PLLA and PGA. The GO at the interface hindered the coalescence of PGA phase through the repulsive forces and facilitated the breakup of the PGA phase, which increased the contact surface area between PLLA and PGA, and thereby enhancing the interfacial interaction. Consequently, the tensile and compressive strength of the PLLA/PGA scaffold containing 1 wt% the PLLA-grafted GO, on which L-LA ring-opening polymerized for 24 h, were increased by 44.64% and 69.65%, respectively, compared with PLLA/PGA scaffold. Besides, the cell adhesion and fluorescence experiments demonstrated that the bone scaffold had good cytocompatibility for cell adhesion, migration and proliferation.

Graphene oxide (GO)-based aptasensors are currently one of the most popular sensing platforms for the simple and rapid detection of various targets. Unfortunately, the GO-based aptasensors with long aptamer strands typically show unsatisfactory performance resulting from insignificant structural transformations upon target binding. We report herein the utilization of an aptamer-truncating strategy to combat such a challenge. Taking a pre-selected anti-aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) aptamer (P-AFB1-50) as a trial system, we sequentially remove the extraneous nucleotides within the aptamer by means of circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and binding affinity analysis. Particularly, the ratio of the quenching constants between the GO sheets and the truncated aptamers (labelled with fluorophores) in the absence and presence of the target was determined for each of the truncated aptamers to evaluate the optimal sequence. As a result, the truncated aptamer comprising 40 nucleotides was confirmed to show the highest FL output and the best detection limit upon conjugation with GO sheets. More importantly, we demonstrated that this truncating strategy is versatile, i.e., it can be easily extended to other aptamer systems (anti-ochratoxin A (OTA) aptamer, P-OTA-61, as an example) for extraneous nucleotide identification. Impressively, the two optimal truncated aptamers can work together on GO sheets to achieve a simultaneous detection of two different mycotoxins (i.e., AFB1 and OTA) in one single test. Essentially, this research opens a new avenue for the design and testing of aptamer-/GO-based-sensing platforms for rapid, low-cost and multiplex quantification of analytical targets of interest.

Graphene oxide (GO)-induced porous coral-like polypyrrole have been fabricated via facile in situ polymerization. The morphologies and structures of PPy with different GO concentration were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed that PPy/GO presented different morphologies and properties with varied amounts of GO. The electrochemical performances of prepared PPy/GO and PPy electrodes were compared. Notably, the PPy/GO electrodes showed much better electrochemical performance than the PPy electrodes. It indicated that the doping of GO in the composites significantly enhanced the electrochemical behaviors of PPy/GO electrodes. The excellent performance was the result of synergistic effects of GO and PPy structure and property. The device obtained a large specific capacitance of 568.35 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A/g and high energy density of 37.4 Wh kg −1 . In addition, it also exhibited good cycle stability, with a capacitance retention rate of 83.4% for 500 cycles. More importantly, the electrode presented high flexibility property. The supercapacitor device fabricated is promising for the use in lightweight and flexible electronic devices.

The graphene oxide-cellulose nanocrystal (GO-CNC) composites were facilely synthesized and used as a novel hydrophilic additive to blend into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) microporous membrane aiming at improving the antifouling performance of the resultant GO-CNC/PVDF membrane in MBR. The physicochemical properties of the GO-CNC composite and its functionalized PVDF membrane were investigated in detail by SEM-EDX, FTIR, XRD, water contact angle, zeta potential, permeability and fouling analysis. Results revealed that the hydrophilic GO-CNC composite functionalized PVDF microfiltration membrane exhibited higher wettability, lower protein and polysaccharides adsorption, and higher permeability compared to CNC/PVDF and previously reported GO/PVDF membranes. During long-term operation in MBR, the GO-CNC/PVDF membrane displayed superior antifouling performances with characteristic of less EPS accumulation, higher flux recovery ratio, lower irreversible fouling level and longer cleaning cycle, due to higher hydrophilicity and porosity as well as more negative zeta potential in comparison with the pristine PVDF and CNC/PVDF membranes. It can be expected that as a novel hydrophilic and antifouling additive, GO-CNC composite functionalized membranes would receive more extensive applications in MBR system for wastewater treatment and water reclamation.

The printing and dyeing wastewater has high chromaticity, biorefractory properties, and significant toxicity. In this study, PVDF-PVA/GO was synthesized for dyes’ adsorption with various chemical properties. Incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into the composite substantially enhanced the hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the PVDF membrane. Results indicated that the adsorption efficiencies for rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) are higher than those of methyl orange (MO) and bromocresol green (BCG). At an initial pH of 8, the maximum adsorption capacities for RhB and MB were 11.81 and 9.25 mg/g, respectively, while MO and BCG indicated considerably lower capacities of 0.59 and 0.63 mg/g, respectively. The cyclic utilization of the PVDF-PVA/GO revealed minimal degradation in adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics of the four dyes primarily follow intra-particle diffusion mechanisms, resulting in the binding of dye molecules to the PVDF-PVA/GO membrane through electrostatic interactions. Notably, competitive adsorption phenomena were observed in mixed dye systems, especially between RhB and MB. Comparative analyses indicated an increased adsorption capacity for MB in the mixed dye system, accompanied by a notable reduction in the adsorption capacity of RhB. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the remediation of printing and dyeing wastewater. Graphical abstract

In this work, an aptamer sensor (aptasensor) for SERS detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was prepared by utilizing flower-shaped silver nanoparticles coated with graphene oxide (Ag@GO) and core–shell Au@Ag nanoparticles embedded with the Raman reporter 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA). Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized using an improved Hummers method and wrapped around thiol-functionalized Ag nanoflowers to form the Ag@GO composite. The SERS aptamer sensor with the strongest Raman signal of 4MBA was developed by combining Ag@GO with Au@4MBA@Ag NPs modified by aptamer through hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions. The aptasensor exhibited good repeatability and stability, and demonstrated high specificity. And it showed a good linear relationship for Vibrio parahaemolyticus detection within the concentration range of 10 2 cfu/mL–10 7 cfu/mL. Introducing GO as an internal standard improved the linear regression coefficient (R 2 ) of detection from 0.9885 to 0.9956. Additionally, spiked real samples of fresh shrimp were tested, yielding recovery rates between 94.1 % and 104.7 %, which demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of this method.

Rapid and accurate in situ determination of dopamine is of great significance in the study of neurological diseases. In this work, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT: PSS)/graphene oxide (GO) fibers were fabricated by an effective method based on microfluidic wet spinning technology. The composite microfibers with stratified and dense arrangement were continuously prepared by injecting PEDOT: PSS and GO dispersion solutions into a microfluidic chip. PEDOT: PSS/GO fiber microelectrodes with high electrochemical activity and enhanced electrochemical oxidation activity of dopamine were constructed by controlling the structure composition of the microfibers with varying flow rate. The fabricated fiber microelectrode had a low detection limit (4.56 nM) and wide detection range (0.01–8.0 µM) for dopamine detection with excellent stability, repeatability, and reproducibility. In addition, the PEDOT: PSS/GO fiber microelectrode prepared was successfully used for the detection of dopamine in human serum and PC12 cells. The strategy for the fabrication of multi-component fiber microelectrodes is a new and effective approach for monitoring the intercellular neurotransmitter dopamine and has high potential as an implantable neural microelectrode. A facile approach was developed for preparing the multilayer hybrid films of mixed (phthalocyaninato) (porphyrinato) europium(III) triple-decker compound (Pc)Eu(Pc)Eu[trans-T(COOCH3)2PP] (1) and graphene oxide (GO) using the solution-processing QLS method. The combination of the nature of relatively high conductivity and great surface area for GO with the electroactive and semiconductive triple-decker compound in ITO electrode renders the hybrid film excellent sensing property for H2O2, due to the optimized triple-decker molecular packing in the uniform-sized nanoparticles (ca. 70 nm) formed on the GO surface. The amperometric responses are linearly proportional to the concentration of H2O2 in the range of 0.05–1800 μM with a fast response time of 0.03 s μM–1, a low detection limit of 0.017 μM, and good sensitivity of 7.4 μA mM–1. The present work represents the best result of tetrapyrrole-based nonenzymatic electrochemical sensor for H2O2. Nevertheless, the triple-decker/GO/ITO also shows excellent stability, reproducibility, and selectivity, indicating the great potential of electroactive tetrapyrrole rare earth sandwich compounds in combination with GO in the field of nonenzymatic electrochemical sensors.

A novel, simple, and versatile electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform for Pb(II) ions was developed based on DNAzyme with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) with positive charge was adsorbed onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and then CdS quantum dots (QDs) with negative charge were enriched to the surface of GO by electrostatic interaction between CdS QDs and PDDA to prepare a composite (denoted as [email protected] ) which was immobilized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). When hydrogen peroxide was used as coreactant CdS QDs can produce ECL signal. G-rich DNA strand, i . e . T30695, can combine with Pb (II) ions to form a stable parallel G-quadruplex. The G-quadruplex can further combine with hemin to form DNAzyme which have catalysis towards the reduction of hydrogen peroxide causing the decrease of ECL signal. Amino-modified T30695 was attached to [email protected] composite by the reaction between the amino group of T30695 and carboxyl group of CdS QDs. The ECL signal of the biosensor was linearly dependent on the logarithm of Pb(II) concentration from 1.0 × 10 − 14 to 1.0 × 10 − 11 M with a detection limit of 9 fM. An excellent performance of ECL biosensor indicated that it is promising for Pb(II) detection in real samples.

Graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes provide an encouraging opportunity to support high separation efficiency for wastewater treatment. However, due to the relatively weak interaction between GO nanosheets, it is difficult for bare GO-based membranes to survive in cross-flow filtration. In addition, the permeation flux of the bare GO membrane is not high sufficiently due to its narrow interlayer spacing. In this study, GO membranes interlinked with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via covalent bonds were fabricated on modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN) supports by vacuum filtration. Due to the strong bonds between GO, MWCNTs and the PAN membrane, the membranes could be used for the treatment of simulated nuclear wastewater containing strontium via a cross-flow process. The result showed a high flux of 210.7 L/(m 2 h) at 0.4 MPa, which was approximately 4 times higher than that of commercial nanofiltration membranes. The improved water permeation was attributed to the nanochannels created by the interlinked MWCNTs in the GO layers. In addition, the hybrid membrane exhibited a high rejection of 93.4% for EDTA-chelated Sr 2+ in an alkaline solution, and could also be used to separate Na + /Sr 2+ mixtures. These results indicate that the MWCNTs-interlinked GO membrane has promising prospects for application in radioactive waste treatment.
