Sulfate-Passivated CsPbI3 Perovskite Nanocrystals for Efficient Red Light-Emitting Diodes

Hongrui Cheng,Wensong Wang,Haijiang Qiu,Fushan Li,Yuanhui Zheng

Due to their excellent optical performance, lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have been widely used in optoelectronic devices. However, the presence of surface defects such as localized trap states severely hampers their practical application in optoelectronic fields. In this work, we have developed a simple method to reduce surface defects by introducing sulfuric acid after the nucleation of CsPbI3 PeNCs is complete. Sulfate ions effectively interact with the exposed metal lead ions on the surface of perovskite NCs, leading to surface passivation. This process represses nonradiative recombination and significantly enhances the luminescence efficiency of PeNCs. Moreover, the passivated CsPbI3 PeNCs with SO42– exhibit a lower overall energy-level structure compared to that of pristine CsPbI3 PeNCs, promoting improved electron injection. Benefiting from this highly effective passivation strategy, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on SO42–-passivated PeNCs exhibit an optimal external quantum yield of 9.94% and luminance of 2182 cd m–2, surpassing the performance of LEDs made from pristine PeNCs.

Ran Wang,Yu Cheng,Qiran Zhang,Haoran Li,Yangyang Wang,Jiaqi Liu,Ruirui Xing,Jinming Ma,Tifeng Jiao

With the development of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, non-contact sensors are expected to realize complex human-computer interaction. However, current non-contact sensors are mainly limited by accuracy and stability. Herein, an intelligent infrared photothermal non-contact sensing system is developed that provides long-distance and high-accuracy non-contact sensing. A black phosphorus (BP)-based composite organogel is designed, which exhibits excellent photothermal properties and environmental stability, as the active material. This material can detect patterns created by near-infrared (NIR) light through various patterned masks monitored by an infrared thermal imager. The constructed non-contact sensing system is capable of accurately recognizing 26 letters with an impressive accuracy rate of 99.4%. Furthermore, even small size non-contact sensors can maintain high sensitivity and stability across a wide temperature range, at long working distances, and under different current intensities and dark conditions, demonstrating exceptional robustness. Combined with machine learning method, it is demonstrated that the non-contact sensing system excels in pattern recognition and human-computer interaction. These features highlight its potential applications in intelligent robotics and remote control systems.

Interface-Directed Growth of Tin Perovskite for Efficient Light-Emitting Diodes

Junjie Feng,Nana Chen,Hao Min,Mian Dai,Yangdi Huang,Chengcheng Wang,Ruishan Wang,Jingya Lai,Xinrui Wang,Shi Hu,Jinfeng Yu,Yue Liu,Jin Chang,Wei Huang,Jianpu Wang

Controlling the crystallization dynamics of solution-processed tin perovskites remains pivotal yet challenging for achieving high-performance lead-free optoelectronic devices. Herein, it is demonstrated that substrate-regulated interfacial nucleation governs crystal growth orientation and film quality of tin perovskites. The results show that pristine PEDOT:PSS substrates induce bottom-interface-dominated nucleation via strong PEDOT + -[SnI 3 ] n n− interactions, driving rapid upward crystallization of tin perovskites and yielding rough films with low photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE: ≈26%). Strategic substrate modification with potassium citrate (PC) weakens the PEDOT + -[SnI 3 ] n n− interactions, thereby redirecting nucleation initiation to the top interface during solvent evaporation. This results in controlled downward crystallization of tin perovskites, forming smooth films with improved crystallinity and superior optoelectronic properties (PLQE: ≈41%). The optimized tin perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) achieve record-breaking performance with an external quantum efficiency of 12.8% and a maximum radiance of 190 W sr −1 m −2 , which is the highest performance reported for tin perovskite near-infrared LEDs to date. This work demonstrates interface-directed crystallization control as an effective strategy for achieving high-performance tin perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Regulating Surface-Passivator Binding Priority for Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Xinwen Sun,Weiwei Meng,Kwan Ho Ngai,Zhiguo Nie,Chuhao Luan,Wenjun Zhang,Shiang Li,Xinhui Lu,Bo Wu,Guofu Zhou,Mingzhu Long,Jianbin Xu

Suppressing trap-assisted nonradiative losses through passivators is a prerequisite for efficient perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, the complex bonding between passivators and perovskites severely suppresses the passivation process, which still lacks comprehensive understanding. Herein, the number, category, and degree of bonds between different functional groups and the perovskite are quantitatively assessed to study the passivation dynamics. Functional groups with high electrostatic potential and large steric hindrance prioritize strong bonding with organic cations and halides on the perfect surface, leading to suppressed coordination with bulky defects. By modulating the binding priorities and coordination capacity, hindrance from the intense interaction with perfect perovskite is significantly reduced, leading to a more direct passivation process. Consequently, the near-infrared PeLED without external light out-coupling demonstrates a record external quantum efficiency of 24.3% at a current density of 42 mA cm −2 . In addition, the device exhibits a record-level-cycle ON/OFF switching of 20 000 and ultralong half-lifetime of 1126.3 h under 5 mA cm −2 . An in-depth understanding of the passivators can offer new insights into the development of high-performance PeLEDs.

Thermal-Induced Hole-Current Reinforcement in Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes

Tianhong Zhou,Shuming Chen

Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) exhibit pronounced thermal- and size-dependent charge injection, characterized by significantly enhanced current under elevated temperatures and reduce device areas. In this study, the underlying mechanisms are elucidated by examining the influence of thermal energy on carrier transport dynamics. This analysis reveals that hole transport is governed by a hopping mechanism, leading to markedly increased hole mobility at higher temperatures, which is a primary contributor to the thermal-dependent current enhancement. This improved hole injection promotes better charge balance and increase luminance. Furthermore, both thermal effect and lateral resistance is identified as key contributors to the size-dependent current behavior. Smaller-area QLEDs exhibit reduced lateral resistance and more pronounced thermal effect, resulting in higher current injection. By leveraging these thermally and geometrically enhanced hole injection characteristics, the application of QLEDs is demonstrated as multi-dimensional visual temperature sensors and realize significantly stronger emission from high-energy excitonic state (1P) transitions in small-area devices.

Inhibiting Cation Segregation to Enable Highly Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Chaomin Dong,Guoyi Chen,Fang Yao,Zhiqiu yu,Kailian Dong,Shengjie Du,Lishuai Huang,Cheng Wang,Ti Wang,Shuxin Wang,Weijun Ke,Guojia Fang

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) present potential applications for next-generation displays due to their excellent luminescent properties and solution processing. The formamidinium-caesium lead bromide (FA x Cs 1− x PbBr 3 ) mixed cation strategy is one of the primary methods to achieve high-performance of Cs-dominate PeLEDs system. However, the inhomogeneous distribution of cations is detrimental to the photoelectronic performance of Cs-dominated PeLEDs. Here, in mixed FA/Cs perovskite films, it is observed that Cs, Br and trace Pb elements precipitated on the surface of the perovskite films. It is found that the segregation of cations is induced by the uncontrollable crystallization process of Cs/FA cations. By introducing biuret additive, the hydrogen bonding interaction of biuret and FA cation balances crystallization rate, which therefore significantly improves the crystal quality and cations distribution of perovskite films. As a result, green PeLEDs with a high external quantum efficiency of 28.8% are obtained, and represent five times enhancement in half-life time ( T 50 ) of 2.48 h at an initial luminance of 100 cd m −2 relative to the control device. The results help to understand the relationship between cationic distribution and PeLEDs properties, offering significant insights for modulating the performance of PeLEDs.

Tetraoctylammonium Bromide Interlayer between NiLiOx and Perovskite for Light-Emitting Diodes

Van-Khoe Vo,Sung-Hoon Bae,Thi Huong Thao Dang,Dinh Hoat Phung,Juhan Kim,Seungwon Lee,Nayoon Lee,Hyo-Jun Lim,Ki-Hee Kim,Joon-Hyung Lee,Young-Woo Heo

Physical vapor deposition is a favorable technique for fabricating light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to its scalability and reproducibility. However, the performances of LEDs fabricated via this method are worse than those prepared via solution processing owing to the generation of high defect densities. In this study, we introduce a layer of tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr), an interfacial-modification compound containing four long octyl chains that are symmetrically arranged around an N atom, to reduce nonradiative recombination and trap densities in CsPbBr3. We examined the impacts of adding TOABr on perovskite thin films deposited on hole injection layers made of Li-doped NiOx and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polystyrenesulfonate. Our investigations reveal that TOABr addition slightly increases crystallinity, dramatically increases photoluminescence, and achieves the preferred orientation in the perovskite films. Additionally, the interfacial layer passivates defects and improves charge balance in the device, thereby enhancing performance. Consequently, perovskite LEDs with a TOABr layer exhibit a lower turn-on voltage of 3 V than their pristine counterparts, achieving a maximum luminance of 11,133 cd m–2 and an external quantum efficiency of 1.24%, whereas the pristine perovskite LEDs achieve an EQE of 0.015%. The approach proposed in this study can be used to fabricate efficient vacuum-thermal-evaporated perovskite LEDs.

Agricultural light-converting anti-icing superhydrophobic coating for plant growth promotion

Xiaoyu Xu,Shaoze Shi,Baohong Sun,Shuying Di,Juyang Zhang,Yuxin Xie,Ninglin Zhou

Agricultural coatings play a crucial role in addressing the global food crisis by significantly improving the plant growth environment, accelerating plant development, and enhancing the biological quality of plants. Nevertheless, there exist constraints in the form of limited sunlight utilization, decreased light transmission caused by surface icing leading to diminished plant photosynthesis, and high cost. In this study, a cost-effective and readily scalable superhydrophobic photothermal light-conversion coating is suggested as a means to improve the light conditions necessary for optimal plant growth. By employing in situ growth of carbon dots (CDs) on the surface and interlayers of montmorillonite (MMT) and hydrolytic polymerization of fluorinated alkyl silane (FAS) on the surface of MMT, light-converting superhydrophobic materials (CDs/MMT) with a micro-nano structure were synthesized. These materials demonstrated broad-spectrum fluorescence emission suitable for utilization by plant photosynthesis. They were dispersed into an epoxy resin (ER) matrix to obtain an agricultural superhydrophobic coating (ER-CDs/MMT). The “light absorption-capture-conversion” effect confers exceptional passive anti-icing and active de-icing properties upon the coating. Furthermore, outdoor planting experiments have demonstrated its capacity to substantially enhance the light environment and enhance the biological quality of soybean and morning glory by leveraging light scattering and conversion characteristics. This underscores its considerable potential for application in the next generation of facility agriculture.

Four-State Photonic Crystal Device with Temperature and Ultraviolet Light Sensitivities

Qikuan Cheng,Haotian Sun,Zhaohan Yu,Pengyu Gu,Yi Yuan,Jiawei Du,Beibei Huang,Dong Wang,Lu Zhang,Yunming Wang,Huamin Zhou

Responsive photonic crystals have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their remarkable capability of exhibiting dynamic color changes in response to external stimuli. Herein, a novel multistage anti-counterfeiting photonic crystal device that integrates chemical (luminescent material) and physical (photonic crystal structure) elements is reported. Based on photochromic materials and thermochromic capsules, a four-state thermochromic/photochromic photonic crystal (TPPC) composite film with dual responsiveness is developed through in situ emulsion polymerization and a straightforward roll shear technology. This innovative approach successfully resolved the issue of short-range order and long-range disorder in conventional photonic crystal films. Through the integration of a multilayer structure and a mask plate process, the dual effects of photochromic and thermochromic are seamlessly combined, enabling the film to exhibit four different optical states under the combined stimuli of temperature and UV light. Unlike tristate systems, the film integrates dual stimuli (UV + heat) for enhanced complexity. Notably, the film demonstrates multilevel responsiveness and dynamic decorative capabilities, allowing flexible switching between four optical states. Furthermore, the TPPC film boasts excellent mechanical properties (with a tensile strength exceeding 2 MPa), emphasizing its strong potential for applications in anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and dynamic display technologies.

Preparation and antibacterial properties of visible-light-active ZnO/Allicin nanocomposites

Yan Li,Ming Shen,Jing Kong

Although the antibacterial properties of ZnO nanoparticles have been widely studied for potential biomedical applications, their relatively mild antibacterial activity still limits the clinical application of ZnO-based antibacterial materials. Here, we reported a new method to improve the antibacterial activity and visible light absorption of ZnO nanoparticles by incorporating allicin on the surface. The synthesis was performed through a simple condensation reflux reaction to obtain the designed series of ZnO/Allicin composites. FT-IR, XRD, and TEM analysis proved the structure and composition of the obtained composites. All composites show visible light absorption in the UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis. Through antibacterial activity tests, the ZnO/allincin-1 % sample showed significantly enhanced activity (2-fold increase) against Staphylococcus aureus after visible light excitation. Antibacterial mechanistic investigations reveal that the composition of allicin with the ZnO nanoparticles not only improves ROS productive ability but also enhances the release of Zn 2+ . Overall, this study provides a practical, convenient, and economic strategy to refine the visible light absorption and antibacterial activity of ZnO without introducing more toxic metal ions. In the meantime, this new nanomaterial could be a good starting point for initiating clinically applicable ZnO nanocomposites.

Dy3+/Cr4+ doped CaLuGaO4 phosphors emitting white and broad NIR light

Wenfeng Yuan,Xianke Sun,Meng Wu

A phosphor that emits both white light and broad near-infrared (NIR) light is of significant interest across various fields, as it enables both visual inspection and NIR spectroscopic detection. In this study, we designed Dy 3+ /Cr 4+ codoped CaLuGaO 4 phosphors that emit both white light and broad NIR light ranging from 1100 nm to 1700 nm when excited at 450 nm. The white light is produced by the 4 F 9/2  →  6 H 15/2 , 6 H 13/2 , 6 H 11/2 transitions of Dy 3+ . The broad NIR light arises from the 3 T 2 to 3 A 2 transition of Cr 4+ . Additionally, energy transfer from Dy 3+ to Cr 4+ occurs in the Dy 3+ /Cr 4+ codoped CaLuGaO 4 phosphors, allowing for tunable ratios of white light to NIR light by varying the concentrations of Dy 3+ and Cr 4+ . A phosphor-converted light-emitting-diode was constructed by encapsulating the synthesized phosphors around a commercial blue LED chip, demonstrating potential applications in lighting sources and non-destructive spectral analysis.
