Establishing a simple and consistent strategy to adjust the photocatalyst surface to improve the photocatalytic performance is crucial but remains challenging. Herein, a photocatalyst of TiO 2 -Q-Pd is obtained through one-step quenching of TiO 2 (derived from NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)) into an aqueous solution of sodium tetrachloropalladium, which displayed a significant improvement in photocatalytic activity, achieving 97 % tetracycline degradation within 60 min and 95 % mineralization at 5 h. The mineralization reaction rate (0.6321 h −1 ) was 2.75 times that of the commercial TiO 2 . Our findings show that quenching leads to the creation of numerous zigzag surfaces and the near-surface palladium atom doping, therefore adjusting the chemical environment of Ti, which accelerates electron-hole pair separation and transfer, and thereby improves the photocatalytic performance. This finding introduces a novel approach to activating metal oxide catalysts derived from MOFs and expands the role of quenching chemistry in catalytic processes.

Solvent vapor-driven soft actuators have been seen as promising devices for human-environment interaction and gained considerable attention in recent years. Considering the limited types of response solvent and the lack of quantification, MOF/polymer intelligent soft actuators may be a potential candidate of the fabrication of the bio solvent-driven actuators. Thus, this paper present a multiple solvent-driven soft actuator based on MIL-88B/PVDF asymmetric film, and also the comparison to the analogs based on other MIL-88(Fe) series flexible MOFs (including MIL-88A, 88C and 88D) was made for the deformation-structure relationship and the solvent-driven mechanism investigation. The deformation behavior to various organic solvent (including methanol, toluene and chloroform) of the MIL-88(Fe)/PVDF composite films have been investigated, and the structure and composition of the MIL88(Fe) fillers and the composite films were also characterized by SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. Based on the above results, the MIL-88B/PVDF composite which shows the diversity of response objects and the fast deformation response to most of the organic solvents through the solvent swelling/adsorption of the MOF skeleton, was used to fabricate a monolayer soft film composed by MIL-88B, carbon black (CB) and PVDF, namely MIL-88B/CB/PVDF. The MIL-88B/CB/PVDF film not only realizes the excellent deformation-discolor dual-responsive to methanol atmosphere with the visible deformation which could being quickly achieved within 1s under 10 vol % methanol atmosphere and the maximum crimp angle being up to 558o within about 50 s, and also a wide color change range including six view angle-dependent high saturation color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple), but also shows an approximate linear relationship to three of the organic solvents (methanol, toluene and chloroform) between the maximum curl angle and the solvent concentration. Furthermore, several smart devices have also been fabricated, including the methanol-driven bionic petals, worm robot, alertor and LIG sensor. Therefore, such soft composites of flexible MOF and polymer have great potential in bio-robot and this work may provide new design strategy for the MOFs/polymer smart materials.

Residual Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris severely impacts juice quality. Conventional thermal treatments fail to completely eliminate bacteria and simultaneously cause the loss of heat-sensitive components. Ultrafiltration (UF) has been a nonthermal alternative to conventional thermal process for the sterilization of apple juice. However, membrane fouling, particularly biofouling is an obstacle for deployment of UF in food processing. In order to tackle the challenging issue of membrane biofouling while ensuring food safety, functionalized UF membrane was developed by multi-stage modifications including metal chelator coating and chlorogenic acid-encapsulated MIL-53(Fe) microparticle grafting. The engineered membrane was applied for cold sterilization of apple juice to remove Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris . Results showed that (i) the engineered membrane could release chlorogenic acid in response to pH stimulation, (ii) the steady state flux of engineered membrane was maintained higher than the pristine membrane after filtration with contaminated apple juice. Only 4.9% viable bacteria were observed on the membrane surface, (iii) the antibacterial mechanism of engineered membrane was mainly due to the disruption of cellular structural integrity and enhanced permeability of cell membranes, which caused the damage to A. acidoterrestris cell, (iv) after filtration, the Fe 3+ concentration in the permeate solution was almost undetectable. The engineered membrane can simultaneously exclude and inactivate A. acidoterrestris in apple juice, while demonstrating excellent anti-adhesion and anti-biofouling properties. Furthermore, the engineered membrane complies with food safety requirements, which verifies that this metal-organic framework modification method has the potential for practical application in food processing.

Food packaging films containing antimicrobial reagents play a crucial role in preventing bacterial-induced fruit decay. This study proposes a bilayer film consisting of an internal amino-modified starch hydrophilic layer and an external amino-modified polyvinyl alcohol/polylactic acid hydrophobic layer, embedding alliin@MIL-101(Fe) as an antibacterial agent, utilizing the pH reduction of fruit decay sites to achieve pH-responsive release, enhancing antibacterial performance. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirm successful crosslinking between amino and aldehyde groups, resulting in the formation of imine bonds and a mesh-like structure conducive to adsorption. Under acidic conditions, the cumulative release rate of alliin reached 74 % within 36 h. Compared to a simple mixture, the tensile strength of the alliin@MIL/NST-NPVA/PLA film reached 34.771 MPa, and transmittance in the wavelength range of 200–370 nm decreased to 0. The scavenging rate of DPPH free radicals in the film can reach 83 %. In addition, the water vapor permeability and oxygen permeability of the film are approximately 7.62 × 10 −16 [g/ (m 2 ‧24 h‧0.1 mm)] and 6.83 (m 2 ‧24 h‧0.1 MPa), respectively; moisture content and water solubility decreased to 10.99 % and 20.77 %. This composite film extended the shelf life of strawberries from 2 to 7 days, significantly enhancing freshness.

Graphical The magnetic heterogeneous catalyst FLP-NH-MIL-101@Fe 3 O 4 , prepared by immobilizing FLP onto magnetic MOF, shows outstanding catalytic activity and recyclability for the reduction of aldehyde/ketone carbonyl compounds. The design strategy opens up a new direction for the research of heterogeneous FLP catalysts. Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), composed of spatially hindered Lewis acids and bases, are promising catalysts for the catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated organic substrates, but the lack of reusability limits their development. The functionalization of solid materials with molecular FLP is a promising method for preparing heterogeneous FLP catalysts. In this work, a magnetically recyclable FLP catalyst was successfully prepared for the reductive carbonyl compounds to the corresponding alcohols. FLP of 2-Ph 2 PPhCHO/B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 was grafted into NH 2 -MIL-101@Fe 3 O 4 composite material through an aldehyde-amine condensation reaction. The as-prepared FLP-NH-MIL-101@Fe 3 O 4 exhibited remarkable catalytic activity for aldehyde/ketone carbonyl compounds. In addition, FLP-NH-MIL-101@Fe 3 O 4 displays outstanding magnetic recyclability and can be reused 8 times without loss of activity.

The efficient transformation of glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is crucial for sustainable bio-refinery processes, but achieving high production efficiency remains challenging. In this study, we presented the preparation of Al-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically MIL-53(Al), MIL-53(Al)-NO2, and MIL-53(Al)-NH2, using different ligands as catalysts to enhance the production of 5-HMF from glucose. Comprehensive characterization provided valuable insights into the properties of the synthesized MOFs. The synthesized MOFs exhibited varied MIL-53(Al) states, morphologies, and thermal stabilities based on the different ligands employed, which in turn affected their catalytic performance. Among the Al-containing MOFs synthesized, MIL-53(Al)-NH2 demonstrated remarkable catalytic capabilities for the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF. This MOF achieved an impressive 5-HMF yield of 53% and a reaction selectivity of 54%. The catalytic efficiency was further enhanced by leveraging the synergistic effect of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 in combination with Amberlyst-36, resulting in a 5-HMF yield of 59% and a reaction selectivity of 60%.

Tetracycline’s accumulation in the environment poses threats to human health and the ecological balance, necessitating efficient and rapid removal methods. Novel porous metal–organic framework (MOF) materials have garnered significant attention in academia due to their distinctive characteristics. This paper focuses on studying the adsorption and removal performance of amino-modified MIL-101(Fe) materials towards tetracycline, along with their adsorption mechanisms. The main research objectives and conclusions are as follows: (1) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) MOF materials were successfully synthesized via the solvothermal method, confirmed through various characterization techniques including XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, XPS, BET, and TGA. (2) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) exhibited a 40% enhancement in tetracycline adsorption performance compared to MIL-101(Fe), primarily through chemical adsorption following pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption process conformed well to Freundlich isotherm models, indicating multilayer and heterogeneous adsorption characteristics. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the adsorption process as a spontaneous endothermic reaction. (3) An increased adsorbent dosage and temperature correspondingly improved NH2-MIL-101(Fe)’s adsorption efficiency, with optimal performance observed under neutral pH conditions. These findings provide new strategies for the effective removal of tetracycline from the environment, thus holding significant implications for environmental protection.

Anionic dyes contaminate water and severely disrupt aquatic ecosystems, urgently demanding effective treatment solutions for safety. This study explores the synthesis of unsaturated MIL-101(Cr) and its exceptional performance in removing anionic dyes from polluted water systems. The synthesized MIL-101(Cr) exhibits medium Lewis’s acid and strong Brønsted acid sites, a high specific surface area (>3000 m 2 /g), and a Zeta potential of 30 mV, contributing to its strong adsorption capability. Adsorption studies reveal Langmuir isotherm model fitting, with maximum adsorption capacities of 4231, 1266, and 568 mg/g for Acid Blue 92, Congo Red, and Acid Blue 90, respectively. The chemisorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and is spontaneous and exothermic. MIL-101(Cr) demonstrates chemical and water stability, maintaining over 80% removal efficiency after five recycling cycles. This research provides valuable insights into treating anionic dye-contaminated wastewater using MIL-101(Cr) as an efficient adsorbent.

Alcohol and water photooxidation reactions are employed in concert with optical spectroscopy analyses to demonstrate the occurrence of multiple and distinctive charge-transfer (CT) mechanisms in the environmental photocatalyst MIL-125(Ti). The contribution of ligand-to-metal CT (LMCT) mechanisms increases at wavelengths lower than 320 nm while that of node oxygen-to-metal CT (OMCT) mechanisms increases at longer wavelengths. The localization of photogenerated holes on different atoms leads to a selective reactivity of the framework depending on the mechanism and, during hydroxylation processes, to its spontaneous transition to the isostructural MIL-125-OH(Ti) and the development of an additional LMCT mechanism with a long-lived emission. Furthermore, a previously unidentified and extrinsic CT mechanism is spectroscopically related to the formation of terephthalate-based oligomers . The coexistence of distinctive CT mechanisms in MIL-125(Ti) implies their critical role in catalyst efficiency, and mastering them proves to be a powerful and simple strategy to produce the valuable MIL-125-OH(Ti).

Owing to its environmental compatibility and energy conservation properties, photocathodic protection (PCP) has emerged as a promising approach for metal corrosion protection. The key to efficient PCP lies in developing semiconductor composite materials that combine excellent photoelectrochemical performance with a simple preparation process. Herein, a carbon-doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 S 3 composite (Bi 2 S 3 /C-TiO 2 ) was fabricated via a single-step, low-temperature hydrolysis strategy using NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) as the precursor, concurrently achieving carbon doping and incorporating a narrow-bandgap semiconductor. Characterization by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical testing under illumination revealed that the composite exhibits significantly enhanced visible-light absorption while effectively suppressing photogenerated charge carrier recombination. Under optimized conditions, the Bi 2 S 3 /C-TiO 2 photoanode shifted the potential of coupled 304 stainless steel (304SS) to −464 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) under visible-light irradiation—substantially below its corrosion potential—demonstrating effective photogenerated cathodic protection for 304SS.

MIL-53(Fe), as a typical metal–organic framework (MOFs) material, has shown broad application prospects in the field of membrane separation technology due to its advantages such as high specific surface area and good chemical stability. However, few studies have specifically applied it to the preparation of oil–water separation membranes. Therefore, this study innovatively proposed a self-assembly strategy. By constructing a MOFs composite coating covering the membrane surface and a comprehensive metal polyphenol network (MPN), this approach was designed to form an efficient, comprehensive oil-rejection system while significantly enhancing pure water flux. Then, through a series of characterizations and performance tests, the results showed that the prepared composite membrane exhibited excellent oil–water separation performance: pure water flux was as high as 3641.21 L m −2 h −1 , and at the same time, the rejection rate of oil-in-water emulsion was stably maintained at more than 99.58%. Therefore, this study not only successfully verified the great potential of MIL-53(Fe)-based composite membranes in the field of efficient oil–water separation, providing a new theoretical basis and feasible technical path for its design, but also further expanded the practical application prospects of MOFs materials in the treatment of oily wastewater, opening up new ideas for the development of the next generation of high-performance separation membranes.

To address the severe Cr(VI) contamination in industrial wastewater, an NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 type-II heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a solvothermal one-pot method. Structural characterization using XRD, SEM, XPS, and BET confirmed successful composite formation with high specific surface area and favorable interfacial contact. Photocatalytic experiments revealed that under conditions of pH = 2, a catalyst dosage of 20 mg, and an initial concentration of 10 mg/L, NM-101(Fe)/0.2CN achieved a 99.5 % reduction efficiency within 80 min. Its reaction rate constant was 3.6 times higher than that of NM-101(Fe) used alone. This study provides new insights for developing highly efficient MOF/polymer composite photocatalysts.
