The solubility of ethyl p-aminobenzoate (EPAB) was measured in six different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol) within (283.15 to 327.15) K by the last solid disappearance method. The solubility increases with increasing temperature. The decreasing order satisfies the following sequence: methanol > ethanol > n-propanol > n-butanol > isoamyl alcohol > isobutyl alcohol. Four models, including modified Apelblat equation, λh model, NRTL model, and Wilson model, were used to correlate the experimental data of EPAB. It is found that the modified Apelblat equation, NRTL model, and Wilson model were suitable to correlate the solubility of EPAB in the selected solvents with an overall RAD less than 2%. In addition, the changes of thermodynamic properties of solution [standard molar enthalpy (ΔdisHo), standard molar entropy (ΔdisSo), and standard molar Gibbs energy (ΔdisGo)] were obtained. The results indicate that the dissolution process of EPAB in these alcohols is endothermic and an entropy-driven process.

Hematite is a promising photocatalyst for solar water splitting while its performance has been severely limited by various factors. Recently surface Fe 2 TiO 5 layer was widely reported to enhance the performance of hematite with a favorable band position to facilitate hole transport. Here we further show that the Fe 2 TiO 5 -incorporation in bulk hematite can also improve the performance with faster charge separation. Moreover, it can be well coupled with surface P-modification to simultaneously improve charge separation and hole transfer with a synergetic effect. The Ti and P co-modified hematite shows a significantly enhanced photocurrent of 2.37 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE when compared to the pristine value of 0.85 mA/cm 2 . After coupling with Co-Pi catalysts, the hematite sample can even achieve a stable, high photocurrent of 2.90 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. The design of Ti and P co-modified hematite hollow nanostructures can be used as a promising candidate for solar water splitting applications. The discrete Fe 2 TiO 5 -incorporation also provides a good insight on the mechanism to understand other Ti-based treatments of hematite.

Graphical By taking advantage of the crystal phase dependent electronic property of SnSe x based materials, SnSe( x %)/SnSe 2 (100− x %) p–n heterostructures were synthesized via a facile one-step colloidal method, and the SnSe(50 %)/SnSe 2 (50 %) based sensor exhibited much improved sensing performance due to the formation of p–n hetero-junctions. The formation of semiconductor heterostructures is an effective approach to achieve high performance in electrical gas sensing. However, such heterostructures are usually prepared via multi-step procedures. In this contribution, by taking advantage of the crystal phase-dependent electronic property of SnSe x based materials, we report a one-step colloid method for the preparation of SnSe( x %)/SnSe 2 (100− x %) p–n heterostructures, with x ≈30, 50, and 70. The obtained materials with solution processability were successfully fabricated into NO 2 sensors. Among them, the SnSe(50 %)/SnSe 2 (50 %) based sensor with an active layer thickness of 2 μm exhibited the highest sensitivity to NO 2 (30 % at 0.1 ppm) with a limit of detection (LOD) down to 69 ppb at room temperature (25 °C). This was mainly attributed to the formation of p–n junctions that allowed for gas-induced modification of the junction barriers. Under 405 nm laser illumination, the sensor performance was further enhanced, exhibiting a 3.5 times increased response toward 0.1 ppm NO 2 , along with a recovery time of 4.6 min.

Abstract The misuse of antibiotics drives clinical antimicrobial resistance, with detrimental impacts for human health. Therefore, some new antibacterial materials should be developed to address the overuse of clinical antimicrobials. As a new nanomaterial with good biocompatibility and low toxicity, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are excellent candidates as novel antimicrobial agents. In this study, we prepared blue-emitting phosphorus-doped carbon quantum dots (P-CQDs) with an optimal excitation wavelength of 370 nm and an optimal emission wavelength of 445 nm by a simple and environmentally-friendly one-step hydrothermal method using keratin as the carbon source. We found that P-CQDs exhibited inhibitory effects on microorganisms, with the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.19 mg/mL against Gram-positive bacteria ( S. aureus ) and 0.31 mg/mL against Gram-negative bacteria ( E. coli ). The experimental results implied these stable fluorescence properties of P-CQDs possess good antibacterial activity. Thus, these findings indicate the P-CQDs based on biosynthesized keratin could potentially be used as an excellent antibacterial agent.

The exploration of bifunctional transition metal-based catalysts for water electrolysis is important for clean and large-scale production of hydrogen but yet remains challenging. Herein, a novel phosphorous doped cobalt-copper aerogel (P-CoCu) with three-dimensional interconnected structure was prepared via spontaneous gelation and in-situ P doping process. The electronic structure and charge density of Co could be modulated upon alloying with Cu, resulting in optimized charge transfer efficiency and proton adsorption energy. The hydrophilicity and the bond strength of H* were further optimized through P doping, which promoted the reaction efficiency on the surface of P-CoCu. Besides, the unique porous morphology of aerogel endowed the catalyst with efficient mass transfer pathways and abundant active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed the electron redistribution and the optimization of H 2 desorption performance through Cu alloying and P doping. Based on the outstanding features, the optimized P-CoCu sample achieved extremely low overpotentials of 74/224 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) / oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Additionally, a two-electrode electrolytic cell assembled with P-CoCu only required an operating voltage of 1.57 V at 10 mA·cm −2 with decent stability, which was comparable to commercial noble-metal catalysts (Pt/C//RuO 2 /C) and superior to recently published electrocatalyst. This work provides an anticipated perspective of non-noble metal-based bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting.

The shielding effect effectively suppresses the chemical adsorption between platinum and sulfur species and hinders the formation of Pt-S bonds. • Electrons transfer from Pt to the carbon encapsulation layer to construct metal-carbon interfacial structures, which endows the catalyst with superior hydrogenation activity in sulfur-containing environments. • Carbon-encapsulated structure enhances the structural stability and sulfur resistance of the catalyst. • Experimental characterizations combined with DFT calculations elucidate the underlying reaction mechanism. The presence of sulfur-containing impurities in industrial feedstocks leads to the rapid deactivation of metal-based catalysts, which originates from the specific recognition between the d orbitals of metallic active sites and the p orbitals of sulfur. In this work, a carbon-encapsulation catalyst strategy was employed to shield this specific d–p orbital recognition effect. The Pt-base catalyst showed a sharp 92.28% loss in activity after sulfur poisoning, whereas the carbon-encapsulated catalyst maintained high efficiency and stability, sustaining a reaction rate of 83.41 min –1 even at high mercaptan concentrations (7945 ppm). Moreover, it exhibited excellent reusability with negligible deactivation after five cycles. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the carbon shell serves as “armor” for Pt active sites, physically isolating them from sulfur impurities and suppressing the hybridization between Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and the S 2p orbitals. Meanwhile, Pt nanoparticles induce electron transfer to the carbon layer, converting it into a conductive “metallic carbon” that enhances hydrogenation activity. This work provides new insights into the anti-sulfur poisoning mechanism of catalytic hydrogenation. Download: Download high-res image (255KB) Download: Download full-size image

Photothermal-assisted photocatalysis, which couples localized thermal energy with photogenerated charge carriers to overcome thermodynamic and kinetic limitations, has emerged as an effective strategy for solar-driven CO2 reduction. Herein, nanoflower-like NiO/ZnO p–n heterojunction spheres were rationally constructed via a simple hydrothermal calcination method to achieve efficient concentrated photothermal-assisted CO2 reduction. The unique nanoflower morphology provides abundant interfacial contact between NiO and ZnO, while the formation of the p–n heterojunction establishes an internal electric field that suppresses electron-hole recombination. Under concentrated irradiation (4.31 W·cm−2), the photothermal coupling effect reduces the apparent activation energy and enables the NiO/ZnO photocatalyst to deliver CO and CH4 production rates of 51.78 and 15.96 μmol·g−1·h−1, which are 7.92 and 9.61 times higher, respectively, than those obtained under nonconcentrated illumination. Photoelectrochemical measurements and in situ DRIFTS further reveal that the built-in electric field facilitates directional charge transfer from ZnO to NiO, thereby promoting CO2 adsorption and activation. We demonstrate an efficient photothermal-coupling strategy to construct high-performance catalysts for artificial photosynthesis and solar-to-fuel conversion.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials enable direct thermal-electric energy conversion, but Bi 2 Te 3 -based alloys suffer from limited thermoelectric performance and controversial doping mechanisms of Cu, hindering their practical application in waste heat recovery. To address these issues, this work designs and synthesizes a series of zone-melted p-type Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5*(1− x ) Cu 1.5* x Te 3 +3 wt % Te ( x = 0.0–2.0%) samples. The results show that Cu occupies interstitial sites, suppresses Te volatilization to increase the hole concentration, and enhances the electrical conductivity. Concurrently, lattice distortions and secondary phases reduced lattice thermal conductivity. The 1.0% Cu-doped sample achieves a maximum power factor of 4.74 mW·m − 1 ·K − 2 at 300 K, a peak zT of 1.03 at 412 K, and an average zT of 0.91 (300–500 K), representing improvements of 7%, 8.4%, and 18% over the undoped matrix. Subsequent hot deformation further reduced lattice thermal conductivity but did not enhance zT due to an anomalous rise in carrier concentration and decreased mobility. This study clarifies the interstitial Cu doping mechanism, providing a viable strategy for optimizing Bi 2 Te 3 -based materials.

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are central to clean-energy electrochemical technologies, yet achieving high hydroxide conductivity together with dimensional and alkaline stability remains challenging. Here we implement a straightforward branching strategy in poly(arylene 3-piperidinium)s by incorporating two trifunctional units, i.e., triptycene and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, into the polymer backbone. This architecture suppresses water uptake and swelling without compromising the membrane's ion-transport efficiency and chemical durability. Compared to linear membranes, the branched membranes exhibit a 34−36% reduction in water absorption. Triptycene-based branched AEMs achieved superior performance, including suppressed swelling (<18% at 80 °C), high conductivity up to 191 mS cm −1 at 80 °C, and improved alkaline stability, remaining intact in 1 M NaOH for at least 2000 h. Importantly, a water electrolyzer based on B-PT3Pip-3%Trip demonstrated a current density of 6.9 A cm −2 at 2.0 V and 80 °C, and can operate stably under 1 A cm −2 at 60 °C for 1000 h with a voltage decay of only 81 μV h −1 . The synthetic simplicity of the branching strategy, together with the combination of suppressed swelling, high conductivity, and long-term durability, makes branched poly(arylene 3-piperidinium) AEMs highly promising for AEM water electrolysis applications.

Traditional cellulose films lack both effective UV-shielding and durable flame-retardant properties, limiting their use in transparent packaging and protective. In this study, a highly transparent, UV-shielding, and flame-retardant cellulose composite film was fabricated via a solvent-exchange route. Water-insoluble triphenyl phosphate (TPP) flame retardant was diffused through ethanol into regenerated cellulose (RC) gel prepared by NaOH/urea/H 2 O low temperature dissolving system, followed by post-treatment with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) ethanol solution to improve the compatibility between TPP and RC and drying. The obtained PNSi-RC films exhibit visible-light transmittance exceeding 85% and demonstrate improvement in UV shielding capability. Moreover, the PNSi 7 -RC film achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 29 and a UL-94 V-0 rating, exhibiting good flame-retardant property. The films remained largely consistent flame-retardant performance after water exposure for 24 h, and the LOI values were almost no changes. This simple strategy can be scalable to the preparation process of other films for green flame-retardant packaging and protective.

Dural reconstruction, essential for protecting the central nervous system, remains challenging in cranial neurosurgery. This study discovers that the alignment of poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) electrospun fibers influences cellular behavior, thereby promoting dura mater regeneration without inducing excessive fibrosis. Electrospinning parameters were precisely optimized to fabricate PPDO fiber membranes exhibiting either isotropic or highly aligned morphologies. Quantitative analysis confirmed a clear relationship between electrospinning conditions and fiber alignment. The membranes displayed stable degradation characteristics suitable for biomedical applications. Notably, highly aligned PPDO membranes promoted spindle-shaped cellular morphology and enhanced secretion of three growth factors- alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), facilitating favorable cellular responses for regeneration. These results display the significance of fiber orientation in designing advanced biomaterials for dura mater repair.

Despite the great potential of nano-alloying anodes to prominently increase the electrochemical performance in sodium ions batteries , the low-cost and mass-produced methods, as well as the optimization design of alloy-based composites are still needed. Herein, a simple but effective electrospinning method is used to fabricate Sb/P@C composite nanospheres with adjustable P, Sb ratio and uniform morphology. It is found that the amount of Sb inside the Sb/P@C composite and the porous structure can be readily modulated. It is worth noting that the improved electrochemical performance of the Sb/P@C anodes can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Na + ions storage and superior charge transfer in the fabricated composite with reciprocally inlaid Sb/P and C that inhibiting the aggregation of nanospheres . Particularly, the mosaic distribution of Sb/P nanospheres in the carbon matrix not only accelerate the ions and electrons transfer but also serve as the buffer for alleviating the volumetric variation. Importantly, a high capacity of 350 mAh g −1 can be achieved even rising current density to 500 mA g −1 , indicating great potential for high rate sodium ions anodes. The tactics of this work should be general to other alloy-type systems, such as Sn, Bi et al., which also suffer from severe volume expansion causing electrode performance degradation.
