Enhanced Cyclopropanation of Norbornene as a High-Energy Fuel by Pd Single-Site Catalysts

Xinyue Zhang,Yuan Yao,Yingying Cao,Xin Tan,Xiaomin Fang,Yanqiang Zhang

The high strain energy of the three-membered ring can increase the combustion calorific value of space fuels. At present, the cyclopropanation of alkenes is the bottleneck to obtain highly-energy three-member-ring fuels. In this article, Pd single-site catalysts (SSCs) were prepared to catalyze the cyclopropanation of norbornene. Pd2+ on the SSCs enhanced the adsorption of CH2N2 through electrostatic interaction, efficiently forming metal carbene. The conversion and selectivity of norbornene cyclopropanation reached 99.9% and 96.9%, which are much higher than those of commercial Pd/C (conversion 42.3%, selectivity 80.8%). In addition, the obtained tricyclooctane shows excellent properties (density 0.93 g/cm3, calorific value 42.75 MJ/kg) to be a promising high-performance rocket fuel. This work provides an efficient method for the synthesis of cyclopropane-based space fuels from alkenes.

Engineering spatially proximate redox sites in Pd-In/TiO2 photocatalyst for selective CO2 photoreduction

Mazhar Khan,Zeeshan Akmal,Muhammad Tayyab,Seemal Mansoor,Muhammad Adnan Zeb,Amir Zeeshan,Muhammad Mubashir Khan,Ziwei Ye,Jinlong Zhang,Shiqun Wu,Lingzhi Wang

The synergistic integration of redox reactions in the photocatalyst poses a significant challenge for CO 2 photoreduction. Addressing this issue requires the design of spatially proximate redox sites while effectively suppressing charge recombination at these sites. This work offers a pioneering tactic that exploits synergistic redox reactions in close atomic proximity. The deliberate incorporation of palladium and indium into TiO 2 , where the Pd site assists in hole accumulation, accelerates water dissociation, and generates highly active H* species. Meanwhile, adjacent In sites capture photogenerated electrons from TiO 2 , producing reactive intermediates by activating CO 2 . The synergistic incorporation of Pd and In accelerates redox functionality, boosts charge carrier separation, and mitigates recombination at closely situated redox sites. Comprehensive characterizations, including in-situ XPS and FTIR, strengthen these innovative outcomes. The optimized Pd 0.5 -In 1 /TiO 2 photocatalyst achieves nearly 100 % selectivity of CH 4 with a production rate of 30.5 µmol g -1 h −1 without the use of any sacrificial reagent, demonstrating a 25-fold improvement compared to pristine TiO 2 . In-situ infrared spectroscopy further validates that the synergistic doping of metal ions promotes the formation of *CH 3 O and *CHO, key intermediates in the production of CH 4 . This investigation provides valuable insight into the intricate design of coupled redox active sites.

Facet-dependent degradation of Pd nanocubes and surface stabilization via atomic-level Pt modification

Chen Li,Zhe Gong,Peiqi Huang,Yongchao Wang,Mingxing Gong

Single-crystal Pd nanocubes with preferential (100) facets were synthesized as model catalysts to probe the intrinsic activity and stability limits of Pd-based electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation. The nanocubes deliver a mass activity of 1140 mA mg −1 at 0.9 V, nearly twice that of Pt/C. Despite this impressive activity, accelerated durability tests reveal pronounced performance decay, arising from facet-dependent structural degradation rather than catalyst detachment. Identical-location TEM combined with in-situ Raman spectroscopy uncovers that adsorbed hydroxyl intermediates trigger Pd dissolution, lattice reconstruction, and interparticle coalescence, leading to severe loss of electrochemically active surface area. Guided by these mechanistic insights, we introduced an atomic-level surface modification by depositing an ultrathin Pt overlayer on Pd nanocubes. The resulting Pd@Pt nanocubes preserve the cubic architecture, achieve an enhanced mass activity of 1506 mA mg −1 , and exhibit substantially improved stability with >50% retention after extended operation. The suppression of hydroxyl-induced poisoning and coalescence highlights the role of interfacial electronic tuning in stabilizing active surfaces. This work elucidates the facet-specific degradation pathways of Pd catalysts and establishes surface modification as a generalizable strategy toward designing durable, high-performance electrocatalysts for alcohol oxidation.

Phosphorus coordinated Pd single-atom sites on hypercrosslinked polymers for heterogeneous hydroesterification of ethylene

Luming Wang,Guoliang Zhang,Hui Zhao,Gang Wang,Zengxi Li,Chunshan Li

Recently, the development of separable and recycling heterogeneous catalyst for ethylene hydroesterification to methyl propionate (MP) has attracted wide interest of researchers. Herein, a kind of 1, 2-bis(di- tert -butyl phosphinomethyl)benzene (dtbpb)-functionalized hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) coordinated with Pd single-atom sites was designed and utilized for heterogeneous hydroesterification of ethylene to MP using CO and methanol. The as-prepared catalyst series were characterized with FT-IR, SEM, XPS, NMR, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, and XAS, which confirmed the coordination structure of Pd with dtbpb ligand linked to HCPs, as well as the dispersion of Pd in the form of single atoms on the polymer support. The effects of Pd loading and reaction conditions on the ethylene hydroesterification were systematically investigated. As a result, 100 % selectivity of MP with 96.2 % conversion of ethylene were achieved on Pd/dtbpb@HCPs catalyst under the optimal condition and no obvious deactivation behavior was observed during the recycling evaluation. The detailed reaction mechanism of ethylene hydroesterification was proposed by identification of crucial intermediates of Pd-H, Pd-alkyl and Pd-acyl species by employing in-situ DRIFTS. The kinetic study was conducted and the reaction orders of ethylene and CO are corresponding to 0 and 0.5, with the activation energy of 50.7 kJ/mol.

Catalytic activity of flame-synthesized Pd/TiO2 for the methane oxidation following hydrogen pretreatments

Nafeng Wang,Fang Niu,Shuhao Wang,Yun Huang

A nanocatalyst composed of 10   wt% Pd supported on TiO 2 was synthesized using one-step flame spray pyrolysis with a highly-quenched premixed stagnation flame. The as-prepared nanoparticles , having a mean diameter of approximately 10   nm, were then subjected to isothermal oxidation and reduction in a fixed bed reactor. The potential roles of Pd and PdO as well as possible synergistic effects between these two active species were explored during methane conversion. The lowest light-off temperature T 20 was obtained at a Pd ratio of 53% and this result can be reasonably explained based on a surface Pd–PdO site pair mechanism. Additionally, differences in the hysteresis behavior during methane oxidation were noted throughout a heating–cooling cycle over the temperature range of 200–600   °C, such that the degree of hysteresis was strongly correlated with the Pd ratio.

Scalable preparation of Pd/bacteria-rGO(CNT, Ketjen) composites for efficient oxygen reduction catalyst

Shaohui Zhang,Qingxin Li,Haikun Zhou,Wei Xuan,Yili Liang,Zhiyong Xie,Feng Liu

In this paper, Pd catalysts supported on novel composite carbon supports were synthesized by the carbonization and hydrogen reduction of Pd 2+ -doped bacteria containing Ketjen EC600JD, CNT and rGO, respectively. The analysis results show that the prepared catalysts exhibit excellent ORR electrocatalytic performance in acid medium. The best ORR electrocatalytic performance was obtained for Pd/carbonized-bacteria-rGO, which exbibits a mass activity at 0.345 A mg −1 that is 9.58 times higher than commercial Pd/C, and meanwhile displays a better stability than that of Pd/C. The enhanced performance can be attributed to nitrogen doping and flexible carbon-coating microstructure. Herein, we elaborate an efficient and ecofriendly method for the synthesis of electrocatalysts used for oxygen reduction reaction.

Zheng-Jun Wang,Jing-Jing Lv,Jiu-Ju Feng,Ningbo Li,Xinhua Xu,Ai-Jun Wang,Renhua Qiu

Pd–Pt nanodendrites were synthesized by a facile, environment-friendly, one-pot wet-chemical method, without using any seed, template, or toxic organic solvent. The as-obtained bimetallic nanocrystals exhibited efficient catalytic activity toward ligand-free Suzuki cross-coupling reaction in ethanol aqueous solution. A series of biphenyl compounds were obtained with high yields under mild conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused at least 6 consecutive cycles, nearly without losing its catalytic activity.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Engineered Pd-WO3–x for Enhanced Plasma-Catalyzed CO2 Hydrogenation to CO

Can Cheng,Yaolin Wang,Jia-nan Wang,Haomiao Xu,Wenjun Huang,Zhisong Liu,Wei Li,Yuyang Li,Zan Qu,Xin Tu,Naiqiang Yan

Plasma-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CO offers a promising route for carbon-neutral chemical synthesis. However, its advancement is constrained by low energy efficiency and limited mechanistic insight. Here, we developed an oxygen vacancy-engineered Pd-WO3–x catalyst supported on nickel foam (NF), which exhibits enhanced performance in ambient plasma-driven CO2 conversion. The system leverages the conductive properties of NF to spatially divide the discharge zone into streamer and filamentary discharge zones, thereby enhancing plasma activation and interfacial charge transfer. Catalyst characterization reveals that Pd plays a critical role in stabilizing metastable oxygen vacancies (OVs) within WO3–x, which function as electron reservoirs to promote CO2 dissociation into CO. Density functional theory calculations and in situ spectroscopic studies confirm that Pd facilitates H2 dissociation, while vibrationally excited CO2 generated in the plasma gas phase preferentially adsorbs at OV sites. At a specific energy input of 33.6 kJ L–1, the system demonstrates superior performance, achieving 54.9% CO2 conversion with 99.8% selectivity toward CO, surpassing typical plasma-catalytic benchmarks. The catalyst exhibited good stability over 100 h of continuous operation, with a slight decrease in CO2 conversion (<10%) and nearly unchanged CO selectivity (>99%) due to strong metal–support interactions and the conductive nature of NF. This work demonstrates that OV engineering provides a promising strategy for designing efficient plasma-catalytic systems for CO2 conversion.

Catalytic Behavior of Flame-Made Pd/TiO2 Nanoparticles in Methane Oxidation at Low Temperatures

Fang Niu,Shuiqing Li,Yichen Zong,Qiang Yao

A controlled one-step synthesis of titania-supported palladium (Pd/TiO2) nanoparticles is demonstrated by using a premixed stagnation swirl flame with an ultrafine spray feeding system. The new method produces well-dispersed palladium clusters on the surface of TiO2 particle. The low-temperature methane catalytic oxidation indicates that the flame-made Pd/TiO2 possesses activity apparently higher than that of the impregnated one under the same Pd loading. For the first time, we observe a special pinched hysteresis loop of catalytic activity of Pd/TiO2 nanoparticles from the curves of CH4 conversion versus temperature during heating–cooling cycles. Thermal stability analysis confirms the complex coexistence and transformation of metallic Pd and PdO in Pd/TiO2 particles. Further morphological characterization reveals the oxidation rate is controlled by the metallic Pd content on the particle surface, whereas the deactivation of the catalysts is mainly due to the Pd dispersion decrement. The competition between the Pd dispersion decrement and the PdO reduction at the surface may result in the pinched hysteresis loop of Pd/TiO2 catalysts during low-temperature methane combustion.

Stabilizing Pd Catalysts on Pentacoordinated Al3+ Sites of Alumina for Efficient Hydrogenation of Hexafluoropropylene

Zhanwang Li,Bing Liu,Hong Yang,Yubao Bi,Sihui Wu,Mingyue Wang,Yuncong Xu,Wenfeng Han

Achieving high dispersion and stability of noble metals on conventional supports remains a key challenge in catalysis. Herein, we address this issue by designing an alumina support enriched with pentacoordinated Al 3+ (Al 3+ penta) sites, which serve as effective anchoring centers for Pd species. The catalyst was applied to the gas-phase hydrogenation of hexafluoropropylene (HFP), a critical step in the synthesis of the low-global-warming-potential refrigerant HFO-1234yf. Comprehensive characterization, including 27 Al MAS NMR, XPS, and HRTEM suggest that the Al 3+ penta sites strongly interact with Pd, forming Pd-O-Al bridge structures, thereby suppressing Pd aggregation and enhancing Pd dispersion. The optimized 0.5 wt% Pd/EA-Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved approximately 92% HFP conversion at 90°C, significantly outperforming conventional Pd/γ-Al 2 O 3 counterpart. This work underscores the decisive role of Al 3+ penta sites in regulating metal-support interactions and provides a viable strategy for designing efficient catalysts with reduced noble-metal loadings. Graphical The abundant penta-coordinated Al 3+ sites in EA-Al 2 O 3 strongly anchor PdO through the formation of stable Pd-O-Al linkages, enabling PdO to remain oxidized and highly dispersed even after H 2 reduction. In contrast, PdO on commercial γ-Al 2 O 3 is fully reduced to metallic Pd and undergoes significant agglomeration. This anchoring effect markedly enhances the catalytic activity and stability in the hydrogenation of HFP to HFC-236ea.

Pd Nanoparticles Immobilized on Bacterial Cellulose: A Sustainable Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Vanillin

Biao Zhang,Fangfang Wang,Ya Ma,Lu Yao,Xudong Liu,Zhicheng Jiang,Bi Shi

Catalyst supports critically affect the efficiency and selectivity of supported metal catalysts. In this investigation, bacterial cellulose (BC) produced through bacterial fermentation was used as a catalyst support, with Pd 2+ loaded on BC and then reduced to prepare a supported Pd catalyst (Pd/BC). Owing to its nanofibrous structure and abundant hydroxyl groups exposed on the surface of BC, BC adsorbed more Pd 2+ via electrostatic interaction and promoted the dispersion of Pd particles, resulting in their smaller particle size. The high crystallinity index of BC endowed the catalyst with high thermal stability, enabling its application in the catalytic hydrogenation of vanillin (a lignin-derived platform chemical) under mild reaction conditions. Strong hydrogen bonding interaction between C6-OH on BC surface and the aldehyde group of vanillin facilitated the hydrogenation rate of vanillin. The hydrogenation of vanillin over the 3 wt% Pd/BC catalyst at 60 °C under 1.5 MPa H 2 for 2 h resulted in 98.45% vanillin conversion and 97.85% yield of vanillyl alcohol, with high recycling stability, and good catalytic universality, effectively catalyzing the hydrogenation of different lignin-derived aldehydes. This study paves the way for the application of cellulose with polyhydroxy groups in catalysis.

Microneedle with d-band-modulated Pd@Pt nanozyme modulates glucose metabolism via inflammatory microenvironment

Yanan Wang,Teng Wang,Boran Li,Yitong Lin,Qi Zhang,Fei Chang,Yutong Han,Wenxuan Li,Hao Zhang,Xiaoyun He,Huilian Che,Kunlun Huang,Nan Cheng

Pd@Pt nanozymes are recognized for their extensive specific surface area and enzyme-like catalytic capabilities. However, the role of Pd@Pt nanoparticles in managing metabolic disorders such as diabetes and its related disorders remains poorly understood. This study endeavors to explore the regulatory function of Pd@Pt nanoparticles in metabolic balance, elucidating the associated mechanisms. We demonstrate that Pd@Pt inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and modulates oxidative stress through its superoxide-dismutase-like enzyme activity in palmitic-acid-induced insulin resistance cell model. Furthermore, Pd@Pt was found to enhance glucose uptake, reduce hyperglycemia, and improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, attributable to its anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, the effectiveness of the multifunctional Pd@Pt-based microneedle in expediting the healing of diabetic wounds was confirmed by suppressing key inflammatory signaling pathways. Collectively, our findings highlight the potential of Pd@Pt nanoparticles as powerful anti-inflammatory agents, offering promising therapeutic options for type 2 diabetes and its associated complications.
