Deep Eutectic Solvent-Induced Microphase Separation and Entanglement of PVA Chains for Tough and Reprocessable Eutectogels for Sensors

Yan Wang,Yu Wang,Lifeng Yan

A high-strength PVA-based eutectogel has been synthesized by a strategy of solvent-induced microphase separation. Here, PVA was dissolved in water, and green solvent DES (choline chloride/glycerol) was introduced to induce PVA to undergo microphase separation, leading to poorly solvated domains and highly solvated domains. In poorly solvated domains, the PVA chains were folded and crystallized, and the formed crystalline domains served as physical cross-linkers. Such cross-linking structures endowed the eutectogels with remarkable mechanical properties, showing strength in tension reaching up to 1.2 MPa and elongation at a break of 405%, with rupture toughness of 3.23 MJ m–3. Meanwhile, the as-obtained eutectogel possessed reprocessability and could be recycled through high-temperature dissolution and recasting. In addition, the eutectogel also exhibited excellent frost resistance, and its ionic conductivity could still reach 0.62 mS cm–1 at −40 °C. In addition, the eutectogel can maintain a stable output signal during a multiple strain cycle, showing the potential application in the flexible sensor. The eutectogel is capable of detecting the bending movement of joints and identifying the different bending angles of fingers, showing a certain applied potential in motion detection of the human body.

Miaomiao He,Feiyang Ou,Yue Wu,Xiaodong Sun,Xianchun Chen,Han Li,Dan Sun,Li Zhang

In this work, a multi-layer wound dressing consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam and electrospun sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) surface mesh was developed and characterized. Antimicrobial drug stearyl trimethyl ammoium chloride (STAC) was loaded into the PVA foam for infection control and the CMC surface mesh offers effective hemostatic function. Additionally, the potential of laser photodynamic response of the loaded methylene blue (MB) and its effect in enhancing the wound dressing's bacterial inhibition has been investigated. The antibacterial drug and laser photodynamic therapy (PDT) were jointly deployed, which demonstrated greater potential in killing both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria strains. In addition, the unique color changing property of MB has enabled real time bacterial infection monitoring of the wound dressing. The multi-layer wound dressing with ideal material combination and unique multifunctionality may be a promising option for wound management in the future healthcare sector.

Preparation of Highly Bioactive Nanolignin via Dopamine Mannich Modification and Its Synergistic Effects With Zn2+ in PVA Hydrogels

Meiling Han,Hui Hui,Yi Yang,Yan Wang,Danli Zhou,Yuebin Xi,Yu Jing,Pingxian Feng,Fan-Gong Kong,Huan Wang,Weijun Yang

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Lignin is a natural non-toxic polyphenolic macromolecule, which shows inherent antioxidant and broad-spectrum antibacterial activities. However, due to the low content and the high bond dissociation energy of phenolic hydroxyl groups (Ar-O·H), its antioxidant and antibacterial activities are relatively weak, which limits its application as a highly bioactive biomaterial. In this study, different contents of dopamine (DA) were grafted onto the lignin nanoparticles (LNP) via a simple Mannich reaction to prepare LNP- x DA nanomaterial. LNP-1DA has an antibacterial rate of up to 99% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), and the antioxidant activity is 40% higher than that of LNP. Meanwhile, both LNP and LNP-DA have excellent blood and cell compatibility, whereas the hemolysis rate was less than 1% ( p < 0.001) and the cell viability for CCK-8 was higher than 95% ( p > 0.05). In order to further investigate its potential application as the bioactive wound-dressing additive, PVA/LNP-DA/Zn hydrogels were prepared by uniformly dispersing LNP-1DA in the Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) aqueous solution via the freezing-thawing approach, followed by immersing into the ZnCl 2 solution via an equilibrium method. The synergistic effects of LNP-1DA and Zn 2+ coordination endowed the hydrogels with improved mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 37.9 KPa) and antibacterial activity (antibacterial rate of 99%). This work will be of significance for the high-value utilization of lignin and the development of a novel bioactive material. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 木质素是一种天然无毒的多酚类大分子 , 具有固有的抗氧化和广谱抗菌活性。

pH-Responsive Dual-Network PVA Films Integrating CNC-Stabilized Mosla chinensis Essential Oil Emulsions for Active Food Packaging

Huiqiong Wu,Yuxuan Zhu,Huan Liu,Yingying Deng,Zhipeng Wang,Hongning Liu,Zhe Li,Liangshan Ming

This study developed a pH-responsive dual-network polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) active packaging film by integrating cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-stabilizedMosla chinensisessential oil (EO) emulsions with a tannic acid–Fe3+metal–phenolic network (MPN). The CNC-stabilized emulsion improved EO dispersion and retention in the PVA matrix and contributed to network reinforcement through hydrogen-bonding interactions, while the dynamic MPN further strengthened the film structure and acted as a pH-gated domain for regulating EO release. Composite film achieved high UVA and UVB blocking efficiencies of 90.06% and 99.60%, respectively, together with improved mechanical, barrier, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Compared with neutral conditions (pH = 7), EO release increased by 179.9% and 181.3% at pH = 4 and pH = 9, respectively, confirming the pH-gated release behavior of the film. In yam preservation, composite film effectively delayed browning, weight loss, firmness decline, and spoilage. Metabolomic analysis further indicated that the film treatment regulated phenylpropanoid metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis, which may contribute to maintaining antioxidant-related metabolic homeostasis. This work offers a pH-responsive controlled-release active packaging strategy for browning-prone fresh produce.

Highly Linear and Sensitive Hydrogel Strain Sensor Enabled by PVA/CS–HEDP Dynamic Networks for Wearable Motion Monitoring

Xinyi Wan,Mengmeng Xiong

Flexible wearable strain sensors that accurately capture joint motion are essential for rehabilitation assessment, motion monitoring, and human–machine interaction. However, conventional hydrogel sensors often suffer from limited mechanical robustness, poor durability, insufficient conductivity, or biocompatibility concerns caused by conductive fillers and chemical crosslinkers. Here, we report a multifunctional biocompatible hydrogel strain sensor, PCH, constructed from a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) double-network matrix, hydroxyl ethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP)-mediated dynamic coordination crosslinking, and potassium chloride (KCl)-based ion conduction. FTIR analysis confirms the formation of a hybrid PVA/CS–HEDP network stabilized by hydrogen bonding and phosphonate-associated interactions, contributing to enhanced mechanical integrity. The PCH hydrogel exhibits favorable tensile properties, stable cyclic loading–unloading behavior, and reliable durability. Electromechanical tests show a linear and sensitive strain response with a gauge factor of 0.84 and high linearity (R2 = 0.9976). In joint mobility monitoring, PCH generates precise angle-dependent signals during ±90° wrist bending and maintains stable output under continuous bidirectional motion. It also shows repeatable finger-joint sensing performance and favorable cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and skin compatibility, demonstrating strong potential for real-time wearable joint monitoring.

Supramolecular Engineering of Silk Fibroin/PVA Hydrogels with Calcium-Mediated Ion Transport for Highly Conductive and Biocompatible Bioelectronics

Dongyang Ye,Min Gong,Liancong Yue,Hejinglong Zhang,You Wu,Sen Kang,Zhen Wu,Liang Zhang,Xiang Lin,Fengxian Gao,Dongrui Wang

Developing flexible bioelectronics that seamlessly integrate with human skin requires materials that are not only soft and conductive but also biocompatible and sustainable. Silk fibroin (SF), a natural protein with inherent biocompatibility and hierarchical structure, holds promise for such applications, yet its mechanical properties are mismatched with soft biological tissues, and it lacks intrinsic conductivity, limiting its standalone use. Inspired by nature’s use of Ca2+ for both structural reinforcement and signal transduction, we report a green supramolecular hydrogel built upon SF as the core component, combined with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Ca2+ via a one-step freeze–thaw method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the three components engage in extensive noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, ionic coordination, and van der Waals forces, collectively constructing a stable yet dynamic cross-linked network. Within this network, Ca2+ functions both as a dynamic cross-linker to enhance mechanical properties and as a charge carrier to enable ionic conduction. The resulting hydrogel exhibits an exceptional combination of skin-like mechanical properties, with a Young’s modulus of 0.114 MPa, a tensile strength of 0.408 MPa, and an elongation at break of 407%. It also features a high ionic conductivity of 2.330 S/m, rapid self-healing, broad adhesion to diverse substrates, and excellent biocompatibility, with cell viability exceeding 80% at concentrations of 0.78–25 mg/mL. When employed as a flexible electrode, the hydrogel enables high-fidelity, real-time monitoring of human electrocardiogram and electromyogram signals, with signal intensity closely correlated to physiological activity. This work presents a bioinspired strategy for developing high-performance and biocompatible sensing materials, advancing the frontier of wearable health monitoring and human–machine interfaces.

Long-acting sustained-release PVA/chitosan dual-network hydrogel microspheres with high drug-loading capacity for anticancer therapy

Yan Shiping,Liao Xizhi,Yao Jiaxing,Xiao Jialong,Lei Jiajie,Chen Yi,Yang Lingxiu,Yu Mengyi,Zhou Zheng,Liu Hairong

Polymer-based drug-loaded microspheres emerged as prevalent clinical modalities, exemplified by transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and composite wound dressings, leveraging their sub-millimeter dimensions for versatile therapeutic deployment and targeted delivery. However, inherent limitations persist, including constrained drug loading capacity, rapid drug release kinetics, and non-degradability, thereby precluding the feasibility of repeat interventions. Based on these considerations, this study proposes a novel microsphere construction strategy that utilizes anionic monomer 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS)-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the primary raw material and incorporates cationic modified chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (QCS) to form a double-network microsphere. Owing to the abundant dynamic ionic interactions and the synergistic integration of soft and rigid molecular chains within the gel matrix, the resulting microsphere exhibits excellent mechanical properties, including a compressive deformation resistance exceeding 70%, high drug loading capacity, and prolonged sustained-release performance. When loaded with the cationic anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and the antibacterial agent polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB), the microspheres achieved loading concentrations of 100.31 mg/mL and 132.25 mg/mL, respectively, with sustained release lasting over 12 days. In a rabbit hepatic artery embolization experiment, DOX-loaded microspheres effectively occluded blood flow and induced liver necrosis, thereby confirming their superior embolic performance. These features collectively demonstrate the promising application potential of this microsphere in the biomedical field.

Multi-Scale Structural Regulation of PVA/SiO2 Hybrid Nanofiber Aerogels for Dual-Mode Separation of Water/Oil Mixtures

Shiyao Zhong,Ye Zhang,Xin Yang,Siyi Bi,Guangwei Shao,Nanliang Chen,Jinhua Jiang,Huiqi Shao

In addressing the enhancement needs for hydrophilic aerogels utilized in oil–water separation, with a particular focus on mechanical properties, filtration flux, and oil repellency, this study investigates the fabrication and performance modification of poly(vinyl alcohol)/silica (PVA/SiO2) hybrid nanofiber aerogels. A synergistic mechanism is established between molecular transport channels and size-sieving effects through systematic multiscale structural regulation. This results in aerogels featuring uniform fine-diameter fiber units, internally oriented large-pore channels, and micronano-tiered rough surfaces, achieving an optimized balance between selectivity and permeability while ensuring structural stability. Furthermore, based on the thickness-dependent filtration performance of the aerogel, an innovative dual-mode oil–water separation mechanism is demonstrated: thin-layer aerogels (0.5 mm) utilize gravity to achieve high-flux filtration of oil–water mixtures (pure water filtration flux >6500 L·m–2·h–1); while thick-layer aerogels (>2 mm) are driven by capillary-dominated reverse transport, efficiently adsorbing water from high-density oil phases (adsorption capacity >30.6 g·g–1). In contrast to the preceding studies, this research uses industrial engine oil for experimental purposes. The findings indicate that controllable switching between oil and water separation modes can be achieved through the simple adjustment of aerogel thickness. This finding broadens the application scope of the material and provides an efficient and reliable strategy for treating variable oil–water mixtures in industrial spill scenarios.

Green-Synthesized Bio-ZnO Nanoparticle-Integrated PVA-Chitosan-PMMA Nanofibers Enhanced Antimicrobial and Tissue-Regenerative Diabetic Wound Healing

Teshale Ayano Begeno,Tibebu Shiferaw Kassa,Tassew Belete Bahru,Chen Shuhuan,Shi Jialei,Yong Liu,Lingling Qin,Yaqi Zhang,Zhenxia Du

Skin wound healing involves proliferation, inflammation, regeneration, and remodeling. These processes are severely impaired in diabetes due to advanced glycation end-product accumulation, excessive reactive oxygen species, and vascular dysfunction, requiring multifunctional therapeutic and innovative wound care approaches. Thus, many electrospun polymeric matrices were investigated to enhance wound-healing efficacy; however, few studies have examined ZnO NPs embedded multi-component polymeric nanofibers for diabetic wound healing, where infection, oxidative stress, and delayed regeneration persist as major impediments to diabetic wound repair. Addressing these challenges, this study developed a novel therapeutic strategy using electrospun nanofibers of poly(vinyl alcohol)-chitosan-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVA-Cs-PMMA) integrated with biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (Bio-ZnO NPs) synthesized from Syzygium guineense . Comprehensively characterized using UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM-EDX, and XPS analyses, confirming nanoscale crystalline structure and strong polymer-nanoparticle interactions. Bio-ZnO NPs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (29.38 ± 0.91 mm) and Escherichia coli (27.82 ± 0.95 mm), alongside strong antioxidant performance (IC 50 = 11.60 mg mL −1 , R 2 = 0.966). In vivo diabetic wound demonstrated accelerated healing (≥99% closure in 14 days) with enhanced re-epithelialization and collagen deposition, without histopathological abnormalities in major organs. These findings underscore Bio-ZnO NPs@PVA-Cs-PMMA nanofibers as an effective biomaterial with strong potential for advanced diabetic wound management.

Printable waterproof and breathable composite PVA coating on PE flash spun fabric via corona treatment for medical packaging

Yuqing Niu,Sen Yan,Jingli Zhang,Kangbo Zhang,Zhengwu He,Ling Han

Polyethylene flash-spun nonwoven is widely used in medical packaging due to its excellent mechanical properties, light weight, and breathability. However, its surface energy is inherently low, and it has a porous structure of stacked ultrafine fibers. These features result in poor printing precision for water-based inks. Conventional coatings often compromise breathability, rendering the material unsuitable for medical sterilization processes. This study proposes a synergistic modification strategy combining corona pretreatment and a PTCC (PVA/TiO₂/CA/CMC-Na) multifunctional coating to produce PE-PTCC flash-spun nonwoven. The results indicate that mild corona treatment effectively etches the fiber surface, significantly enhancing the wettability of the PE nonwoven, with the water contact angle decreasing sharply from 154.1° to 52.3°. The PTCC coating successfully constructs a continuous and dense covering layer that effectively fills the larger interfiber pores while preserving a microporous structure, achieving an air permeability of 23.6 mm s −1 and maintaining good breathability without sacrificing water resistance. The resulting PE-PTCC nonwoven exhibits markedly improved printing performance, including enhanced precision for 0.2 mm line widths, uniform pigment dispersion, sharp line edges, and a low color difference (ΔE = 1.06). Furthermore, the tensile strength in both longitudinal and horizontal directions is enhanced to 35.2 MPa and 30.5 MPa, respectively, demonstrating improved comprehensive mechanical properties while maintaining suitable water vapor transmission for sterilization packaging. This study resolves the critical issues of insufficient wettability and ink bleeding that hinder high-precision printing on PE flash-spun nonwovens, thereby broadening their application prospects in the high-end medical packaging field.

Stable interface PLA-PVA/chitosan bilayer films containing hesperidin: Delivering robust antioxidant and barrier properties for active packaging

Junzhi Jiang,Chen Chen,Meng Gao,Ruixiang Yan

Bilayer film incorporating hesperidin was made for antioxidant food preservation. • Corona treatment improved the structural stability of the bilayer films. • Hesperidin enhanced the film's antioxidant activity, particularly at 3 wt%. • P-PCH3 film excelled in mechanical, barrier, and antioxidant properties. • P-PCH3 film well-preserved the arils, cutting oxidative stress and quality loss. As concerns about environmental sustainability and food safety rise, the demand for biodegradable antioxidant packaging solutions has increased. This study develops a biodegradable bilayer composite film for antioxidant food packaging, consisting of a commercial polylactic acid (PLA) substrate coated with a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) layer enriched with hesperidin. Bilayer films were prepared using solution casting and corona treatment, improving adhesion and structural integrity. PLA layer provides water vapor barrier and UV resistance, while the PVA/CS coating loaded with hesperidin offers mechanical strength, oxygen barrier property, and antioxidant properties. Hesperidin formed an intercalation structure in the matrix, promoting the development of hydrogen, ester, and amide bonds and enhancing corresponding film crystallinity and thermostability. Bilayer films with hesperidin exhibited improved mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, thermostability, visible light transmittance, and barrier properties (moisture, oxygen, UV), particularly the film containing 3 wt% hesperidin (P-PCH3). P-PCH3 film demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, evidenced by 89.3% DPPH scavenging and 90.2% ABTS +· scavenging. In a storage experiment, the P-PCH3 film effectively preserved the quality of pomegranate arils by mitigating oxidative stress, enzymatic browning, and weight loss. This biodegradable antioxidant packaging offers a scalable, eco-friendly solution for food preservation, addressing both food safety and environmental challenges in the packaging industry.

Improvement in monovalent cation selectivity and stability of multilayers polyelectrolyte modified SPPSU membrane by doping PVA in substrate

Yang Cui,Jiayi Meng,Long Lv,Yongmei Chen,Tianyu Li

Electrodialysis utilizing monovalent selective cation exchange membranes have wide application prospects in waste acid recycling and lithium-ion extraction. While the multilayered modification of substrate membranes with polyelectrolytes is one of the effective ways to improve the monovalent selectivity of standard cation exchange membrane, the stability of such modified membranes is often poor owing to the detachment of the polyelectrolyte layers. This study proposes a novel strategy utilizing covalent bonding between the modification layers and the substrate. The approach involves doping poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) into a sulfonated polyphenyl sulfone (SPPSU) substrate, followed by the alternate deposition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) via the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method. Subsequently, glutaraldehyde (GA) was employed as a dual-functional crosslinker to achieve simultaneous crosslinking within the substrate and at the interface of substrate and modification layer. The optimized membrane, SPPSU@4PVA(PEI/PSS) 2.5 , exhibited a low surface resistance of 6.77 Ω·cm 2 , a high Na + /Mg 2+ selectivity over 13, and a Na + flux of 4.5 × 10 −8  mol·cm −2 ·s −1 . Most notably, the performance remained after 60 h of continuous electrodialysis operation. This dual-crosslinking strategy enhances both the selectivity and stability of polyelectrolyte-modified monovalent selective cation exchange membranes.
