Low temperature and fast response hydrogen gas sensor with Pd coated SnO2 nanofiber rods

Feipeng Wang,Kelin Hu,Hongcheng Liu,Qi Zhao,Kaizheng Wang,Yuxin Zhang

In this work, we introduced a structure of Pd coated SnO 2 nanofiber rods (NFRs) prepared by electrospinning and magnet sputtering. Pd was first deposited on the obtained nanofibers as a catalyst and then fully dispersed during the resulting of SnO 2 to improve the hydrogen response. The gas sensing tests showed the palladium enhanced the hydrogen response at low temperature (160 °C). When the hydrogen gas concentration was 100 ppm, the limit of detection (LOD) of sensor was as low as 0.25 ppm and the response time was as short as 4 s. Moreover, Pd coated SnO 2 also had excellent hydrogen selectivity and repeatability. The gas sensor was suitable for the detection of hydrogen in low-temperature environment. This work provided a new method for the low temperature hydrogen gas sensor with a fast response and low LOD .

Ultra-low Temperature Catalytic Combustion of Toluene over Pd-Loaded Poplar Wood Monolithic Catalyst

Lin Baining,Du Xuhong,Huang Zhijing,Liu Gonggang,Zhou Yonghua,Xiao Zhihong,Tu Yusong

Reducing the ignition temperature of aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a long-term pursuit for environmental pollution treatment and industrial application. In this paper, the toluene catalytic combustion was ignited at ultra-low temperature of 73 °C over a poplar wood monolithic catalyst with highly dispersed Pd particles coated by nano-thick graphited carbon layer via in-situ carbonization. Combing the characterizations and DFT calculations, the satisfying catalytic performance could be attributed to two aspects: (i) the unrestricted mass transfer of reactant and the high dispersity of Pd were simultaneously ensured in the straight micrometer-channel with abundant surface anchoring groups of poplar wood; (ii) the nano-thick graphited carbon layer on Pd significantly enhanced the oxygen activation. Given the low cost of economic wood and facile preparation technique, this work opened up new alternative for the preparation of highly dispersed noble metal catalyst and the low temperature catalytic combustion of aromatic VOCs in industry. Pinwheel-like tridentate phosphines for controlling divergent regioselectivity in Pd-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes

Tian-Hong Jing,Yi-Ying Zhuang,Xiao-Xin Zhang,Jian-Guo Qian,Xiao-Li Zhao,Yong Lu,Hai-Jing Wang,Ye Liu

The elaborate control of regioselectivity regulated by the involved ligands with specific structural skeleton and compositions is always demanded in alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. Herein, a series of pinwheel-like tridentate phosphine ligands with rotatable flexibility ( L3 ) or hard rigidity ( L5–L7 ) were synthesized and characterized for the first time, in which the incorporated three PPh 2 -fragments are located at meta-positions of phenyl groups. It was proved that the tridentate phosphine of L3 with the flexible configuration favorably corresponded to the linear regioselectivity with l/b ratio of 98/2, whereas L7 with the rigid configuration absolutely did favor to the branched regioselectivity with l/b ratio of 1/99. The presence of the three PPh 2 -frgaments in L3 did contribute to the remarkable performance of L3 -Pd(TFA) 2 system in terms of activity, linear regioselectivity and stability, subjected to 10-run recycling uses in anti -Markovnikov’s methoxycarbonylation of styrene without activity loss and Pd-black precipitation. In comparison, although the optimal L7 -Pd(MeCN) 2 Cl 2 system could catalyze Markovnikov’s alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes to afford the branched esters with excellent regioselectivity in the fresh use, its stability was too poor to support the recycling experiments. L3 -Pd(TFA) 2 and L7 -Pd(MeCN) 2 Cl 2 catalytic systems were both applicable to a wide range of substrates in alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes to afford the target esters in the isolated yields of 41–91 %, with the well maintained divergent regioselectivity.

Effects of Pd/Pt-based soluble catalysts on the combustion characteristics of kerosene droplets

Lei Luo,Fanggang Zhang,Yuhang Sun,Jiayu Sun,Kai Hong Luo,Yu Cheng Liu,Ran Sui

Soluble catalysts that are readily blended with fuels render significant potentials in long-term storage and engine compatibility to improve ignition and combustion reliability under demanding conditions. However, the mechanistic role of such additives under droplet combustion scenarios that involve evaporation-reaction coupling remains unclear. In this study, single-droplet combustion experiments were conducted using RP-3 aviation kerosene doped with two different soluble catalysts, palladium acetylacetonate (Pd(acac) 2 ) and platinum acetylacetonate (Pt(acac) 2 ), over a range of ppm-level concentrations. Ignition delay time, burning rate and droplet lifetime were systematically quantified to elucidate the influence of catalysts on the fuel combustion behaviors. A stage-resolved analysis was conducted to differentiate ignition onset from quasi-steady burning. The results revealed that both catalysts improve ignition and combustion performance, yet exhibit distinct catalytic roles governed by their thermochemical properties and oxidation states. Earlier ignition is promoted by Pd(acac) 2 due to its low-temperature sublimation and the formation of catalytically active Pd and PdO. The former, however, also competes with the fuel for oxygen at the flame front, inducing an inhibiting effect on droplet burning. These effects together result in a non‑monotonic concentration dependence of the burning rate. In contrast, steadier burning is sustained by Pt(acac) 2 through its stable metallic state Pt. These findings clarify how catalyst decomposition characteristics and oxidation-state stability govern ignition onset and subsequent burning behavior. The present study provides mechanistic insights into fuel-catalyst interactions and guidance for developing fuel-soluble additives to enhance ignition reliability and combustion efficiency in advanced aero-engine systems. Novelty and significance statement This study advances the understanding of fuel-soluble noble-metal catalytic additives by revealing how their transient physicochemical evolution affects single-droplet combustion behaviors. By comparatively resolving the thermochemical evolution of two catalysts, this work demonstrates that decomposition pathways, oxidation-state stability, and catalytic activity collectively modulate stage-specific responses during droplet evaporation, ignition and burning. This stage-resolved perspective moves beyond treating soluble catalysts as static combustion enhancers and clarifies the intrinsic coupling between catalyst evolution and droplet combustion. These mechanistic insights establish transferable principles for the rational design of next-generation fuel-soluble catalytic additives and support an engine-compatible strategy for enhancing high-altitude ignition reliability and combustion efficiency without structural modifications to existing aero-engines. In addition, a U-Net-based deep learning framework is introduced for automatic droplet contour recognition, enabling accurate and efficient droplet combustion diagnostics.

Regulating the crystal phase of Pd/Nb2O5 for vanillin selective HDO at room temperature

Hao Xu,Hao Li

Constructing heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency and stability to achieve biomass HDO under comparatively mild conditions is an arduous challenge. Crystal phase of metal oxides supports could affect the geometric and electronic properties, causing the variation of catalytic performance. Herein, a series of Pd/Nb 2 O 5 catalysts of pseudohexagonal crystal phase (Nb 2 O 5 -TT), orthorhombic phase (Nb 2 O 5 -T) and monoclinic phase (Nb 2 O 5 -H) are prepared through regulating the annealing temperature. Impressively, Pd/Nb 2 O 5 -T catalyst showed amazing catalytic performance of 100% conversion and 98.9% selectivity of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) at room temperature (25℃) within 30 min, superior than Pd/Nb 2 O 5 -TT, Pd/Nb 2 O 5 -H and other Pd-based catalysts that had been reported. Besides, the Pd/Nb 2 O 5 -T perform robust stability and maintain its high activity after ten times recovery experiment. This catalytic system is also suitable for different kinds of aldehydes compounds at room temperature, exhibiting the high activity and selectivity towards deoxygenated products. Based on the characterizations and experimental validations, it has confirmed that the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect generates via electron transfer between Pd species and Nb 2 O 5 -T support, where in situ reduction of PdO occurred during the reaction, generating active interfacial Pd-O-Nb sites and accelerating the breaking of C-O bonds. The insights of this work provide a guiding direction for the future design of highly selective heterogeneous catalysts by crystal phase modulation engineering.

Construction of underwater-superaerophilic Pd-CNTs/fluorosilane composite for enhancing heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions

Mengnan Qu,Bin Zhang,Yandong Wang,Yanqing Lv,Jianwei Ge,Yaxin Wu,Min Yan,Lei Shen,Jinmei He

Wettability is an important property of solid surfaces, superwetting materials can be prepared by controlling the surface morphology and surface energy. In recent years, superwetting materials have been researched and used widely in the fields of self-cleaning, anti-fogging, microfluidics, and oil–water separation, but few studies about superwetting materials in chemical reactions have been conducted. In the multiphase reaction, the low solubility and diffusion rate of gas lead to inferior mass transfer, which restricts the reaction kinetics and reduces the reaction rate. Therefore, it may be a breakthrough to make the solid surface obtain underwater superaerophilicity. In this paper, 1H,1H,2H,2H -perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS) with low surface energy was constructed on the palladium-carbon nanotubes (Pd-CNTs), as-prepared Pd-CNTs/POTS composite has excellent hydrophobicity and underwater superaerophilicity. When Pd-CNTs/POTS composite was utilized in the catalytic hydrogenation, Pd-CNTs/POTS composite shows higher catalytic activity than Pd-CNTs; the higher catalytic performance is attributed to the underwater superaerophilicity, which enables gaseous hydrogen to rapidly accumulate on the surface of material, increasing the gas–liquid–solid reaction interface formed. The strategy looks forward to providing a new way for developing novel and efficient heterogeneous catalysts and reaction systems.

Pd/SmMn2O5 catalyst for methane combustion: efficient lattice oxygen and strong metal-support interaction

Ding Jiancai,Li Guangpeng,Ran Rui,Wu Xiaodong,Weng Duan,Yang Zhigang

Manganese-based mullite-type and perovskite-type mixed oxides were prepared by sol–gel method, and then palladium was loaded onto the mixed oxides by wet impregnation method. The catalytic performance for methane combustion, the influence of the supports, and the interaction between noble metal and the mixed oxides were investigated via experiments and theoretical calculations. The Pd/SmMn 2 O 5 catalyst exhibited superior low-temperature catalytic activity for methane combustion ( T 50  = 328 °C), which was superior to the Pd/perovskites catalysts and even better than Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. It was ascribed to the abundant labile surface lattice oxygen species with high mobility and the uniformly dispersed Pd species on SmMn 2 O 5 , as revealed by TEM, CO-chemisorption, H 2 -TPR and XPS. DFT calculations verified the significant metal-support interaction via electron transfer between Pd and SmMn 2 O 5 , which further activated the lattice oxygen and improved the catalytic performance. It demonstrates the prospect of utilizing SmMn 2 O 5 mullite to optimize the typical noble metal catalysts. Graphical Abstract

SiO2-supported Pd nanoparticles for highly efficient, selective and stable phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone

Junyuan Xu,Lihua Zhu,Huan Zhang,Xin Deng,Kaihui Li,Bing Hui Chen

Cyclohexanone is significant chemical reagent for organic synthesis, so it is key to design and prepare a highly active and environmentally friendly catalyst for the conversion of phenol to cyclohexanone . The results in this work show that the Pd-based supported nanocatalysts (Pd/SiO 2 ) with various Pd contents (Pd/SiO 2 –1 with 0.16 wt% Pd, Pd/SiO 2 –2 with 0.26 wt% Pd, Pd/SiO 2 –3 with 0.52 wt% Pd, Pd/SiO 2 –4 with 2.60 wt% Pd) have high conversion and selectivity in phenol selective hydrogenation to cyclohexanone under relatively moderate reaction parameters, Pd/SiO 2 –2 with the highest conversion of 80.6%, selectivity of 92.1% and turnover frequency (TOF) of 1106.1 h −1 . This excellent activity is attributed to the highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on silica with high surface area. The Pd/SiO 2 catalysts are with high Pd dispersion and strong interaction of Pd-SiO 2 , which have been proved by XRD, XPS, BET, TEM, HRTEM, STEM, STEM-EDS elemental analysis techniques. The as-prepared materials have good catalytic behaviors in the selective hydrogenation of phenol and good stability, facilitating phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone and preventing the excessive hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol.

Hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol over carbon dots supported Pd catalyst

Xuewu Ji,Guirong Bao,Peng Gao,Jia Luo,Dequan Chen,Zhen Fang

Vanillin hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was studied in water and methanol using palladium-decorated carbon dots (Pd/CDs). The catalyst was synthesized from photo-reduction of palladium acetate using CDs as the reducing and dispersion agent, while CDs were produced via microwave treatment of glucose and urea. Pd/CDs were characterized with XRD, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, BET and ICP-OES. The selectivity to 2‑methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP), at vanillin conversion of 100 % after 4.0 h was 98.8 % at 140 °C under 4.0 MPa of H 2 in water with 4.58 wt.% of Pd/CDs. The stability of Pd/CDs was also investigated after four times recycle under the optimal reaction conditions. CDs supported Pd reduced with NaBH 4 and hydrazine hydrate (Pd/CDs-S and Pd/CDs-H) and other carbonaceous materials (active carbon and OH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube) supported Pd (Pd/AC and Pd/CNTs) were also investigated for comparison. The highest selectivity to MMP achieved by Pd/CDs produced via photoreduction brings a novel use of this type of catalyst in the conversion of biomass into value-added chemicals and materials.

Lean methane combustion over zeolite-supported Pd catalysts: Structure-performance relationship and deactivation mechanism

Xingyu Liu,Jingkun Chen,Bowen Han,Renna Li,Le Shi,Zhongbiao Wu,Xiaole Weng

Zeolites are a promising support for Pd catalysts in lean methane (CH 4 ) combustion. Herein, three types of zeolites (H-MOR, H-ZSM-5 and H-Y) were selected to estimate their structural effects and deactivation mechanisms in CH 4 combustion. We show that variations in zeolite structure and surface acidity led to distinct changes in Pd states. Pd/H-MOR with external high-dispersing Pd nanoparticles exhibited the best apparent activity, with activation energy ( E a ) at 73 kJ/mol, while Pd/H-ZSM-5 displayed the highest turnover frequency (TOF) at 19.6 × 10 −3  s −1 , presumably owing to its large particles with more step sites providing active sites in one particle for CH 4 activation. Pd/H-Y with dispersed PdO within pore channels and/or Pd 2+ ions on ion-exchange sites yielded the lowest apparent activity and TOF. Furthermore, Pd/H-MOR and Pd/H-ZSM-5 were both stable under a dry condition, but introducing 3 vol.% H 2 O caused the CH 4 conversion rate on Pd/H-MOR drop from 100% to 63% and that on Pd/H-ZSM-5 decreased remarkably from 82% to 36%. The former was shown to originate from zeolite structural dealumination, and the latter principally owed to Pd aggregation and the loss of active PdO.

Epitaxial growth triggered core-shell Pd@RuP nanorods for high-efficiency electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Jiaqian Ding,Xian Jiang,Caikang Wang,Zhuoya Zhu,Chang Xu,Yi Zhou,Xuan Wang,Qicheng Liu,Zhenyuan Liu,Yawen Tang,Jun Lin,Gengtao Fu

Ru with Pt-like hydrogen bond strength, knockdown cost (∼1/3 of Pt), and eximious stability is a competitive replacement for Pt-based catalysts towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting. The design of Ru-based catalysts via interface construction, crystal phase control, and specific light element doping to realize the impressive promotion of limited activity and stability remains challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of Pd@RuP core-shell nanorods (NRs) via an epitaxial growth method, where ultrathin RuP shells extend the face-centered cubic ( fcc ) crystal structure and (111) plane of the Pd NRs core. Density functional theory results confirm that the core-shell interface engineering and P doping synergistically accelerate electron transfer and moderate the d -band center to generate a suitable affinity for H*, thus optimizing HER kinetics. Compared with Pd@Ru NRs and Pt/C, the Pd@RuP NRs exhibit preferable electrocatalytic stability and superior activity with a low overpotential of 18 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in the alkaline HER process. Furthermore, the integrated Pd@RuP//RuO 2 -based electrolyzer also displays a low operation potential of 1.42 V to acquire 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating great potential for practical water electrolysis. Our work presents an efficient avenue to design Ru-based electrocatalysts via epitaxial growth for extraordinary HER performance.

Electrocatalytic dechlorination of florfenicol using a Pd-loaded on blue TiO2 nanotube arrays cathode

Jianhui Xu,Xin Fu,Yufeng Liu,Yunfei Zhang,Shenggui Chen,Dan Li,Chunhui Zhang,Jiale Gao,Yibo Fu

Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination technology provides an attractive strategy to effectively eliminate the biotoxicity of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs). Herein, we demonstrated a highly dispersed Pd loaded on blue TiO 2 nanotube arrays (Pd x -BTNA) cathode that can achieve efficient dechlorination and detoxification toward florfenicol (FLO). Characterization results indicated that strong interaction between Pd and BTNA was achieved through Pd-O bonds, which facilitated the electron transfer rate. Pd x -BTNA significantly outperformed other cathodes (i.e., BTNA, Pd x -TNA and Pd x -Ti) in the electrocatalytic dechlorination of FLO due to enhanced utilization of active H*. The dechlorination performances of FLO well followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic, and the reaction constant rate on Pd x -BTNA cathode (0.035 min −1 ) was 17.5, 1.94, 7.0 times higher than that on BTNA, Pd x -TNA and Pd x -Ti cathodes, respectively. Quenching experiments and electrochemical characterization indicated that both direct electron transfer and indirect reduction process mediated by H* were involved in the dechlorination of FLO. The optimal dechlorination efficiency of 98.79% was obtained by Pd x -BTNA cathode within 120 min at 1 mM PdCl 2 , applied cathode potential of −1.2 V. In addition, Pd x -BTNA exhibited superior stability and durability with almost no Pd leaching (0.0011 mg/L) during five dechlorination cycles. Our research proposed a novel strategy to design low noble Pd-loaded cathode material for efficient dechlorination and detoxification of HOPs.
