The shielding effect effectively suppresses the chemical adsorption between platinum and sulfur species and hinders the formation of Pt-S bonds. • Electrons transfer from Pt to the carbon encapsulation layer to construct metal-carbon interfacial structures, which endows the catalyst with superior hydrogenation activity in sulfur-containing environments. • Carbon-encapsulated structure enhances the structural stability and sulfur resistance of the catalyst. • Experimental characterizations combined with DFT calculations elucidate the underlying reaction mechanism. The presence of sulfur-containing impurities in industrial feedstocks leads to the rapid deactivation of metal-based catalysts, which originates from the specific recognition between the d orbitals of metallic active sites and the p orbitals of sulfur. In this work, a carbon-encapsulation catalyst strategy was employed to shield this specific d–p orbital recognition effect. The Pt-base catalyst showed a sharp 92.28% loss in activity after sulfur poisoning, whereas the carbon-encapsulated catalyst maintained high efficiency and stability, sustaining a reaction rate of 83.41 min –1 even at high mercaptan concentrations (7945 ppm). Moreover, it exhibited excellent reusability with negligible deactivation after five cycles. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the carbon shell serves as “armor” for Pt active sites, physically isolating them from sulfur impurities and suppressing the hybridization between Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and the S 2p orbitals. Meanwhile, Pt nanoparticles induce electron transfer to the carbon layer, converting it into a conductive “metallic carbon” that enhances hydrogenation activity. This work provides new insights into the anti-sulfur poisoning mechanism of catalytic hydrogenation. Download: Download high-res image (255KB) Download: Download full-size image

Modulating the electronic structure of inorganic semiconductors using biomass is an emerging strategy for developing highly efficient photocatalysts. In this study, Chlorella (Ch) was used as a biological carrier and electron donor, and a bio-inorganic hybrid photocatalyst, Chlorella@ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS-Ch), featuring bio-induced sulfur vacancy formation, was successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. Experimental and characterization results indicate that nitrogen- and oxygen-containing functional groups (–NH 2 , –OH, –COOH) on the Ch surface form interfacial covalent bonds (M–N/O) with Zn 2+ /In 3+ in ZnIn₂S₄, inducing the directed injection of electrons from Ch into the ZnIn 2 S 4 lattice. Concurrently, EPR spectroscopy detected the formation of sulfur vacancies (V S ). Under simulated sunlight and under optimal conditions, the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZIS-Ch40 reached [7.969 mmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 ], which is 1.59 times and 5.6 times higher than that of pure ZIS and Ch, respectively, and it maintained good activity even after five cycles. This study provides a new approach for utilizing intact cells to regulate inorganic semiconductor defects and band structures, thereby enabling highly efficient solar hydrogen production.

S-modified MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 hollow nanosheets were constructed for enhanced UOR. • Requires 1.30 V at 10 mA cm −2 and remains stable for 48 h. • MnO 2 phase transformation promotes the generation of Ni 3+ active species. • S-modification enhances urea adsorption while suppressing competitive OH − adsorption. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) provides an alternative anodic process for electrochemical hydrogen generation, but developing catalysts with high activity and sustained performance remains challenging. In this study, we report an S-modified nickel-based catalyst with a hollow nanosheet architecture (α/γ-MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -S), demonstrating enhanced UOR performance in alkaline media. α/γ-MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -S attains a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a potential of 1.30 V and maintains reliable durability for 48 h without significant degradation. The improved activity and durability are associated with the hollow nanosheet structure, the phase transformation of MnO 2 , and S-modification, which facilitate mass transport and charge transfer, modulate the electronic structure of Ni(OH) 2 to promote the formation of Ni 3+ active species, and enhance the electrochemical response to urea at different concentrations. This research establishes a practical avenue for constructing advanced nickel-based UOR catalysts through rational structural optimization, phase regulation, and surface modification. Bisphenol S (BPS), as an environmental pollutant, poses a potential threat to reproductive system health. In this study, we added BPS to primary human endometrial stromal cells (hEnSCs) to detect the acute injury it causes and its long-term effects on the endometrium. The results showed that short-term treatment with BPS can significantly promote oxidative stress and apoptosis of hEnSCs, while long-term treatment can cause excessive senescence of hEnSCs and reduced receptivity. In addition, the culture medium of senescent cells treated with BPS can induce senescence of young hEnSCs. Studies have reported that secondary senescence can be alleviated, and we utilised the autophagy activator Rapa to treat secondary senescence of hEnSCs. We found that Rapa can inhibit the senescence of young cells induced by the culture medium of senescent cells treated with BPS. Therefore, autophagy activated by Rapa can attenuate the secondary senescence of hEnSCs induced by BPS-treated culture medium.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of acetamiprid and simultaneous hydrogen energy recovery remain a significant challenge. Herein, a S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with dual-defect (CdS@ZnO-OV) was successfully synthesized. By constructing defect engineering to modify ZnO and CdS loading, the built-in electric field (IEF) was successfully formed. The prepared material exhibited superior optical and photoelectric properties, owing to interfacial synergistic effect of the double defect. The removal rate of ACE was 95.24%, and simultaneous hydrogen evolution rate was 1.31 mmol g −1 h −1 . Comprehensive characterization, experiments, and theoretical calculations demonstrated that coupling between dual-defect synergy and interface charge mechanism of S-scheme heterojunction not only provided more active sites (promoting the adsorption and decomposition of H 2 O), but also built stable and efficient electronic channels and constructed IEF at the interface, which enhanced photoelectric properties of the material and achieved simultaneous hydrogen evolution and pollutant degradation. Moreover, the prepared material exhibited favorable stability and applicability by cyclic experiments and characterization after reaction. This work revealed the operational mechanism and practical effects of S-scheme heterojunction catalytic systems with dual-defect, providing new strategies for hydrogen recovery from ACE treatment.

Two types of poly(ionic liquids) (PILs), namely linear PILs (LPILs) and reticulated cross-linked network PILs (RPILs), were synthesized and evaluated for the adsorption of gold thiosulfate complex ([Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− ) from thiosulfate solutions. Experimental results showed that the adsorption of [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− on the PILs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process was dominated by chemical adsorption. In terms of adsorption thermodynamics, the bromide-based LPIL fitted the Hill adsorption model, whereas the other PILs followed to the Freundlich model. The main interactions between the PILs and [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− were electrostatic attraction and anion – π interactions, and ion exchange dominated the gold adsorption process. The RPILs exhibited higher gold adsorption capacities than the LPILs. However, gold desorption was more readily achieved with LPILs, primarily owing to their weaker affinity for gold species. In addition, the perchlorate-based LPIL showed good adsorption selectivity and recyclability toward [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− . This study provides a promising strategy for the efficient separation and recovery of gold from thiosulfate media.

Heterogeneous catalysis promises to accelerate sulfur-involved conversion reactions in lithium-sulfur batteries. Solid-state Li2S dissociation remains as the rate-limiting step because of the weakly matched solid-solid electrocatalysis interfaces. We propose an electrochemically molecular-imprinting strategy to have a metal sulfide (MS) catalyst with imprinted defects in positions from which the pre-implanted Li2S has been electrochemically removed. Such tailor-made defects enable the catalyst to bind exclusively to Li atoms in Li2S reactant and elongate the Li–S bond, thus decreasing the reaction energy barrier during charging. The imprinted Ni3S2 catalyst shows the best activity due to the highest defect concentration among the MS catalysts examined. The Li2S oxidation potential is substantially reduced to 2.34 V from 2.96 V for the counterpart free of imprinted vacancies, and an Ah-level pouch cell is realized with excellent cycling performance. With a lean electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 1.80 μL mgS–1, the cell achieves a benchmarkedly high energy density beyond 500 Wh kg–1.

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are central to clean-energy electrochemical technologies, yet achieving high hydroxide conductivity together with dimensional and alkaline stability remains challenging. Here we implement a straightforward branching strategy in poly(arylene 3-piperidinium)s by incorporating two trifunctional units, i.e., triptycene and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, into the polymer backbone. This architecture suppresses water uptake and swelling without compromising the membrane's ion-transport efficiency and chemical durability. Compared to linear membranes, the branched membranes exhibit a 34−36% reduction in water absorption. Triptycene-based branched AEMs achieved superior performance, including suppressed swelling (<18% at 80 °C), high conductivity up to 191 mS cm −1 at 80 °C, and improved alkaline stability, remaining intact in 1 M NaOH for at least 2000 h. Importantly, a water electrolyzer based on B-PT3Pip-3%Trip demonstrated a current density of 6.9 A cm −2 at 2.0 V and 80 °C, and can operate stably under 1 A cm −2 at 60 °C for 1000 h with a voltage decay of only 81 μV h −1 . The synthetic simplicity of the branching strategy, together with the combination of suppressed swelling, high conductivity, and long-term durability, makes branched poly(arylene 3-piperidinium) AEMs highly promising for AEM water electrolysis applications.

Amidst the continuously growing global energy demand and increasingly severe environmental challenges, hydrogen energy has emerged as a promising clean alternative and is expected to play a critical role in the future energy landscape. Photocatalytic water splitting represents a transformative technology in the field of solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Driven by abundant sunlight and using water as the feedstock, it directly decomposes water into clean and renewable hydrogen gas with the assistance of photocatalysts. Among various photocatalysts, cadmium sulfide (CdS) has attracted considerable attention as a visible-light-responsive semiconductor with great potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Nevertheless, the practical deployment of CdS is still hindered by two major limitations: rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and inherent photochemical instability. In this work, sulfur vacancy-modified CdS (S v -CdS) was synthesized via a hydrothermal acidification method. The introduction of sulfur vacancies enables precise modulation of the electronic properties of CdS, resulting in a narrower bandgap (decreased from 2.77 eV to 2.08 eV) and a broader range of light absorption (extended from 474 nm to 599 nm). Furthermore, it significantly promotes the separation and mobility of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, the S v -CdS catalyst exhibits substantially enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. As a result, the Sv-CdS catalyst shows much stronger photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with lactic acid acting as the sacrificial agent. Under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), the best-performing sulfur-deficient sample, S v -CdS-3, reaches a hydrogen evolution rate of 688.79 μmol g −1 h −1 , approximately 125 times higher than that of unmodified CdS (5.50 μmol g −1 h −1 ).

In this study, a novel Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst ZnIn₂S₄/Cu 2 O was successfully constructed for the efficient degradation of tetracycline in aquatic environments. Flower-like ZnIn₂S₄ microspheres and cubic Cu 2 O were prepared via hydrothermal and water bath synthesis methods, respectively, and then composited through a solid-state pyrolysis-assisted ultrasonic dispersion method to form ZIC composites with different mass ratios (ZIC-2, ZIC-4, ZIC-6). Characterization results show that Cu 2 O nanoparticles are uniformly loaded onto the surface of ZnIn₂S₄ microspheres, forming a close heterojunction interface. Under visible light irradiation, ZIC-4 achieved a TC degradation efficiency of 91.2% within 60 min, significantly outperforming pristine ZnIn₂S₄ and Cu 2 O. Photoelectrochemical tests indicate that the Z-type heterojunction effectively promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and suppresses charge carrier recombination. Radical trapping experiments and EPR tests confirm that superoxide radicals (·O₂ − ) and holes (h + ) are the main reactive species. The composite also exhibits good photostability and recyclability, providing a novel and efficient photocatalytic material for visible-light-driven removal of antibiotic pollutants from water.

Novel Yb-BiOI/Ce-MgAl-LDH S-scheme heterojunction boosts photo-Fenton degradation. • Substrate molecular orbitals govern the selective 1 O 2 -dominated degradation. • S-scheme heterojunction achieves 100% TC-HCl degradation within 20 min. • The system demonstrates excellent environmental adaptability and stability. • Photocatalytic mechanism elucidated via experiments and DFT calculations. Developing highly selective catalytic systems remains a grand challenge in advanced water remediation. A novel S-scheme Yb-BiOI/Ce-MgAl-LDH heterojunction was rationally designed to synergistically boost photo-Fenton degradation via targeted singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation. Unambiguously validated by in situ XPS and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the S-scheme charge-transfer pathway efficiently accelerated spatial carrier separation while preserving maximum redox potentials. Consequently, the composite rapidly degraded the parent tetracycline hydrochloride within 20 min and achieved a mineralization efficiency of 52.5%, exhibiting outstanding degradation performance. Crucially, mechanism studies and density functional theory analyses have demonstrated that this highly selective reaction process, driven primarily by 1 O 2 as the dominant reactive oxygen species, is essentially determined by the energy levels of the specific molecular orbitals of the substrate. Pathway elucidation, coupled with in silico predictions and empirical phytotoxicity bioassays, comprehensively confirmed the substantial reduction in intermediate ecotoxicity. Ultimately, the scientific value of this work lies in providing deep mechanistic insights into S-scheme-driven selective oxidation, offering a robust and sustainable paradigm for designing targeted detoxification systems in wastewater treatment. PEDV infection induces intracellular iron accumulation in host cells. • Iron promotes CoV replication by enhancing Fe-S cluster-dependent RdRp activity. • TEMPOL suppresses CoV replication by disrupting viral Fe-S cluster integrity. • TEMPOL exhibits broad-spectrum anti-CoV activity in vitro and in vivo. • TEMPOL effectively counteracts iron-exacerbated viral pathogenesis in vivo. Coronaviruses (CoVs) can cause severe respiratory and enteric diseases, posing major threats to human health and the livestock industry. However, the host metabolic mechanisms underlying viral replication remain unclear. Using porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as the primary model, this study investigated the role of iron metabolism in CoV replication and its mechanisms. Our results showed that PEDV infection markedly induced intracellular iron accumulation, while exogenous iron supplementation enhanced viral replication and iron chelation suppressed it. Mechanistically, iron enhances viral replication by promoting the formation of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters, essential cofactors for the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Based on these findings, we further evaluated the antiviral activity of TEMPOL, a small molecule targeting viral Fe-S clusters. TEMPOL reduced RdRp activity and effectively inhibited PEDV replication. Moreover, TEMPOL exhibited broad-spectrum antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV). Importantly, TEMPOL effectively reversed FAC-promoted viral pathogenesis, alleviating tissue lesions and clinical symptoms across multiple CoV animal models. Collectively, this study reveals a key role of iron metabolism in CoV replication and suggests that targeting viral Fe-S clusters may provide a novel strategy for anti-CoV therapy against diverse CoVs.
