Sandwich-like silicon/Ti3C2Tx MXene composite by electrostatic self-assembly for high performance lithium ion battery

Fan Zhang,Zirui Jia,Chao Wang,Ailing Feng,Kuikui Wang,Tianqi Hou,Jiajia Liu,Yi Zhang,Guanglei Wu

Silicon has been regarded as a promising anode materials for lithium ion battery . However, large volume change during lithiation/delithiation process impedes its application for energy storage. Two-dimensional titanium carbide or carbonitride nanosheet , known as MXene , possesses layered-stacked structure and high electrical conductivity . So MXene has a great potential to improve the cycle life of silicon anode because its layered-stacked structure can accommodate the volume expansion of silicon. Herein, we present a facile process to prepare sandwich-like silicon/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite directed by electrostatic self-assembly. This unique architecture could accommodate silicon expansion during lithiation and enhance electronical conductivity. The silicon/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite delivers an initial reversible capacity of 1067.6 mAh g −1  at a current of 300 mA g −1 . Moreover, it shows a steady cycling ability of 643.8 mAh g −1  at 300 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. This work may shed lights on the development of high energy density silicon-based anode materials for lithium ion battery.

Electrostatic self-assembled NiFe2O4/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption at ultralow loading level

Guo Yan,Wang Dedong,Bai Tiantian,Liu Hu,Zheng Yanjun,Liu Chuntai,Shen Changyu

Two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with excellent electrical conductivity and layered structure have shown great promising in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Here, MXene nanosheets with homogeneously anchored NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene) were prepared using facial electrostatic self-assembling and freeze-drying technique. Interestingly, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of paraffin wax-based composites with only 3% NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene reached as low as − 41.83 dB, showing much stronger EMW absorption property than that of MXene nanosheets ( RL min  =  − 5.03 dB) at the same loading level. This can be mainly ascribed to the existence of NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle that can effectively prevent the self-stacking of MXene nanosheets, causing improved conduction loss. Besides, large amounts of heterogeneous interfaces between NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle and MXene can also produce additional interface polarization loss. More importantly, magnetic loss arising from the magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle is beneficial for good impedance matching, enabling more EMW to enter into the interior of composites to be dissipated. Furthermore, effective absorption bandwidth in the frequency range of 3.44–18 GHz can be achieved by adjusting the matching thickness of composites with 5% NiFe 2 O 4 /MXene. This study paves a way for preparing high-performance MXene-based EMW absorber at ultralow loading level. Graphical abstract Electrostatic self-assembled NiFe2O4/MXene nanocomposites exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance based on the synergistic effect of bifillers

Reinforced anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy coating with eco-friendly L-cysteine modified Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets

Sihao Li,Haowei Huang,Fan Chen,Xiaoling He,Yanqi Ma,Li Zhang,Xinxin Sheng,Ying Chen,Elena Shchukina,Dmitry Shchukin

In this study, MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets were modified by an amino acid (L-Cysteine) to fabricate functionalized MXene (fMX) hybrid material . Results derived from FTIR, XRD , EDS and XPS confirm that L-Cysteine has succeeded in covalently functionalizing MXene's surface. Later, fMX was introduced into the waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating as fillers, and its anti-corrosion performance was studied through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. After being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 30 days, fMX/WEP still maintains a higher impedance modulus at lowest frequency (1.21 × 10 9  Ω·cm 2 ) and a lower corrosion rate (7.95 × 10 −6 mpy) compared to blank WEP. It is resulted from the well dispersion of fMX nanosheets in WEP matrix as well as the enhanced barrier properties offered by fMX. Our research provides a promising strategy for green modified MXene to improve the corrosion resistance of the coating.

2D Ti3C2Tx MXene/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites for attenuation of electromagnetic radiation with excellent heat dissipation

Krishnamoorthy Rajavel,Suibin Luo,Yanjun Wan,Xuecheng Yu,Yougen Hu,Pengli Zhu,Rong Sun,Chingping Wong

The present study deals with novel, and cost-effective preparation of 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) filled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer nanocomposite for the attenuation of electromagnetic interference (EMI). The obtained nanocomposite showed remarkable shielding effectiveness ( SE ) of 48.47 ± 3.5 dB for 22.55 vol% filler contents at a thickness of 2 mm. Formation of conducting network along with the assembly of micro capacitor network preserved for its high EMI shielding performance. The absorption dominated EMI shielding mechanism explained by the strong resonance, and interfacial polarization favors the loss of incident EM energy confirmed from dielectric measurements. Besides, the enhanced thermal conductivity of MXene-PVDF nanocomposites about 0.767 ± 0.034 Wm −1 K −1 at 22.55 vol% filler content depicts that a large amount of incident EM wave attenuated majorly by dielectric components which would be dissipated as heat quickly. The fabricated MXene-PVDF nanocomposites could be a potential candidate for EMI shielding materials and promising multifaceted electronic utilization.

A new flexible and ultralight carbon foam/Ti3C2TX MXene hybrid for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption

Yang Wang,Jian Yang,Zhaofeng Chen,Yunlong Hu

A new ultralight carbon foam/Ti3C2TX (CF/MXene) electromagnetic (EM) absorbing hybrid with three-dimensional network structure was fabricated by vacuum impregnation and freeze-drying process. These hybrids display excellent flexibility and steady compression-resilience properties and also the special three-dimensional structure with ultralow density of only 5–7 mg cm−3 shows higher EM absorption than most foam-based EM absorbers. Studies have shown that the minimum reflection loss of CF/MXene-N2 reaches −45 dB at 8.8 GHz with the Ti3C2TX nanosheets content of 9.8%. In the meanwhile, the effective absorption bandwidth of CF/MXene-N2 can also reach up to 5 GHz (from 6.9 GHz to 11.9 GHz) with the thickness of 4.5 mm. Moreover, the fundamental EM absorption mechanism of CF/MXene hybrids involved to impedance matching, conductive loss and polarization loss is carefully analyzed. Thus, it is expected that the new ultralight carbon foam/Ti3C2TX hybrids with three-dimensional network structure will have great application prospects in the fields of EM absorption.

Synthesis and microwave absorption of Ti3C2Tx MXene with diverse reactant concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature

Guangzhen Cui,Xin Zheng,Xuliang Lv,Qi Jia,Wei Xie,Guangxin Gu

MXene materials with efficient electromagnetic (EM) microwave absorber applications are in high demand. Herein, the EM wave absorption properties of two-dimensional MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x , fabricated by etching the Ti 3 AlC 2 phase with an enchant of HCl and LiF, was thoroughly investigated over a frequency range of 2–18 GHz. In addition, the impact of three critical factors (reactant concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature) on the morphology control and dielectric properties was discussed. With increasing degree of exfoliation, the multilayer structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x changed gradually, thereby further influencing the microwave absorption properties. Among the etched samples, Ti 3 C 2 T x prepared with 9 M HCl at 35 °C for 24 h exhibited an excellent reflection loss of −40.8 dB at 13.9 GHz with a thickness of 1.45 mm, while also possessed the broadest effective bandwidth, reaching 3.66 GHz at 1.68 mm. The demonstrated EM wave response mechanism, indicated that the conduction loss and polarization loss contribute significantly to the EM wave absorption performance. These findings endow the Ti 3 C 2 T x material with an effective foundation for the construction of novel EM wave absorbers.

Stabilizing Ti3C2Tx-MXenes with TiOF2 nanospheres intercalation to improve hydrogen evolution reaction and humidity-sensing performance

Zhenguo Wang,Ke Yu,Yu Feng,Ruijuan Qi,Jie Ren,Ziqiang Zhu

MXenes, a new class of two-dimensional materials, possessing high electrical conductivity and unique surface properties, have exhibited great potential as non-noble metal catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, due to poor oxidation resistance , they are easily oxidized in aqueous solution and high humidity environment, resulting in a great loss of electronic properties and surface reactivity. Herein, we report a simple and effective composite synthesis strategy with TiOF 2 intercalation to improve the stability of MXenes materials. TiOF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x prepared by this strategy shows ultra-long catalytic activity life of 1000 cycles in acid electrolyte. Besides, the catalyst also shows high HER activity with a low onset potential of 103 mV and a Tafel slope as low as 56.2 mV dec − 1 . Benefiting from the stabilization of TiOF 2 and the physicochemical properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x , TiOF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x also exhibits excellent humidity sensitivity and stability.

Quaternary Ti3C2Tx enhanced ionic conduction in quaternized polysulfone membrane for alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells

Xiaole Zhang,Chanchan Fan,Naiyuan Yao,Peng Zhang,Tao Hong,Chenxi Xu,Jigui Cheng

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been studied to improve conductivity for their high performance. The functional groups with positive charge could construct ion channels, which is the significant factor in determining the anions conductivity through the membrane. This report demonstrates the use of a new 2D nanomaterial as filler used in the quaterized polysulfone (QPSU) matrix for composite membrane performance enhancement of alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs). Ti 3 C 2 T x is functionalized with quaternary ammonium groups successfully etched by NH 4 HF 2 . The two kinds Ti 3 C 2 T x are synthesized and incorporated into QPSU based membranes by using a solution blending method. The QPSU/NH 4 HF 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x composite membrane exhibits the hydroxide ionic conductivity nearly 2 times higher than that both of pristine QPSU and QPSU/LiF-Ti 3 C 2 T x membranes among 20–60 °C, and leads to substantial increase in peak power density of AAEMFCs by ~ 30% at 60 °C. The results indicate NH 4 + groups on the MXene surface further enhance the OH - conductivity. Furthermore, the QPSU membranes addition with two kinds Ti 3 C 2 T x both exhibit good mechanical property and thermal stability, and hold promise for application in AAEMFCs.

Enhancing Cr(VI) removal performance of Ti3C2Tx through structural modification by using a spray freezing method

Linjie Yi,Hongwei Wang,Xianliang Ren,GaoBin Liu,Hongen Nian,Zhiqin Zheng,Fang Wu

Structural modification is expected to be a facile way to enhance the adsorption performance of MXene. In this work, the structural modification of Ti3C2Tx was carried out by a spray freezing method, and two kinds of nano-structure (spherical and flaky) of Ti3C2Tx were prepared by adjusting the solution concentration of Ti3C2Tx. Then the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of the spherical and flaky Ti3C2Tx was investigated, respectively. It is found that flaky Ti3C2Tx was produced with a Ti3C2Tx concentration of 3 mg mL−1, while spherical Ti3C2Tx was obtained with a concentration of 6 mg mL−1. The long diameter of flaky Ti3C2Tx is about 8–10 μm, and the specific surface area is 17.81 m2 g−1. While spherical Ti3C2Tx had a diameter of about 1–4 μm and a specific surface area of 17.07 m2 g−1. The optimized structure of flaky and spherical Ti3C2Tx improves the maximum adsorption capacity by 97% and 33%, respectively, compared with the few-layer Ti3C2Tx. The maximum adsorption capacity of flaky Ti3C2Tx was 928 mg g−1, while that of spherical Ti3C2Tx was 626 mg g−1. The adsorption capacity of both Ti3C2Tx structures decreased with the increase of pH, and reached the maximum value at pH = 2; meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of both Ti3C2Tx structures increased with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on flaky Ti3C2Tx was very fast, reaching equilibrium in 3 min, while spherical Ti3C2Tx took 5 min. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on both Ti3C2Tx structures belonged to the monolayers, heat-absorbing chemical adsorption, and the diffusion process of Cr(VI) was regulated by the external diffusion and internal diffusion of particles. Its adsorption mechanism was the combination of reductive adsorption and electrostatic adsorption.

Md. Abdul Khaleque,Md. Romzan Ali,Mohamed Aly Saad Aly,Md. Ikram Hossain,Kim Han Tan,Md. Abu Zaed,Rahman Saidur,Md. Mahbubur Rahman,Nabisab Mujawar Mubarak,Md. Zaved Hossain Khan

Ciprofloxacin is a widely used antibiotic for treating numerous bacterial infections and it is also considered by the world health organization (WHO) to be extremely vital for human medicine. Therefore, accurate, simple, and cost-effective detection of ciprofloxacin, a commonly used antibiotic, is critical for treating various bacterial infectious diseases. In this work, glassy carbon electrode/poly (rutin)/Ti 3 C 2 T x, is developed for the detection of ciprofloxacin antibiotic. The electrochemical sensor was modified with rutin hydrate monomer and Ti 3 C 2 T x via electro-polymerization of rutin hydrate and drop-casting of Ti 3 C 2 T x . The modified electrode surface was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The oxidation of ciprofloxacin was performed in 0.01molL −1 of phosphate buffer at a pH level of 5.0. This medium established a linear range of 1.0 × 10 −9 -1.0 × 10 −4 molL −1 , limit of detection at 1.0 × 10 −9 molL −1 and sensitivity of 0.49 μA/μMcm 2 . Finally, the modified electrode displayed high selectivity when tested in inorganic-organic mixtures as well as in real sample medium such as blood serum. To the best of our knowledge the current work is the first to report the use of MXene/rutin composite for electrochemical sensing mechanism. The proposed electrochemical sensor has high potential for the formation of therapeutic drug doses application via monitoring of CIP patient intake (clinical settings of CIP).

High-Performance Ammonia QCM Sensor Based on SnO2 Quantum Dots/Ti3C2Tx MXene Composites at Room Temperature

Chong Li,Ran Tao,Jinqiao Hou,Huanming Wang,Chen Fu,Jingting Luo

Ammonia (NH 3 ) gas is prevalent in industrial production as a health hazardous gas. Consequently, it is essential to develop a straightforward, reliable, and stable NH 3 sensor capable of operating at room temperature. This paper presents an innovative approach to modifying SnO 2 colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to form a heterojunction, which introduces a significant number of adsorption sites and enhances the response of the sensor. Zero-dimensional (0D) SnO 2 quantum dots and two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene were prepared by solvothermal and in situ etching methods, respectively. The impact of the mass ratio between two materials on the performance was assessed. The sensor based on 12 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/SnO 2 composites demonstrates excellent performance in terms of sensitivity and response/recovery speed. Upon exposure to 50 ppm NH 3 , the frequency shift in the sensor is −1140 Hz, which is 5.6 times larger than that of pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and 2.8 times higher than that of SnO 2 CQDs. The response/recovery time of the sensor for 10 ppm NH 3 was 36/54 s, respectively. The sensor exhibited a theoretical detection limit of 73 ppb and good repeatability. Furthermore, a stable sensing performance can be maintained after 30 days. The enhanced sensor performance can be attributed to the abundant active sites provided by the accumulation/depletion layer in the Ti 3 C 2 T x /SnO 2 heterojunction, which facilitates the adsorption of oxygen molecules. This work promotes the gas sensing application of MXenes and provides a way to improve gas sensing performance.

Fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol/vanillin/Ti3C2Tx/ZnONPs composite film with excellent antimicrobial properties for pepper preservation

Ting Yao,Xianxiang Zeng,Yuying Zou,Tao Luo,Xueying Tao,Hengyi Xu

Novel food packaging materials with antimicrobial properties must be developed to ensure that fresh agricultural products are free from microbial contamination during the process from “farm” to “table”. Herein, we synthesized an antimicrobial composite packaging film by employing a green in situ synthesis method. The method involves the in situ reduction of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on the substrate Ti 3 C 2 T x by Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation broth, which was then blended with polyvinyl alcohol and vanillin to obtain the polyvinyl alcohol/vanillin/Ti 3 C 2 T x /ZnONPs (PVA/VAN/T-Z) composite film. The incorporation of crosslinker VAN and antimicrobial material Ti 3 C 2 T x /ZnONPs did not affect the transparency and color of the film, but improved its mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, and antimicrobial ability of the film. Antimicrobial experiments demonstrated that the PVA/VAN/T-Z composite film exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against bacteria (Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus ) and fungi isolated from peppers. Furthermore, pepper preservation experiments demonstrated that the PVA/VAN/T-Z composite film exhibited commendable antimicrobial and preservation performance compared to commercially available film. As a novel antimicrobial packaging material, the multifunctional PVA/VAN/T-Z composite film has a broad application prospect in food preservation.
