In-situ construction of the nanostructured TiO2/TiN composite films by induction heat treatment: Improved mechanical, corrosion, and biological properties

Xin Chen,Rui-fu Zhu,Zhao-fu Yuan,Han Gao,Wei-li Xu,Gui-yong Xiao,Wen-hua Xu,Yu-peng Lu

To meet the requirements for good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and osseointegration of human hard tissue substitutes and prostheses, a bioactive and stable surface is essential. In this work, in-situ construction of a TiO 2 /TiN composite film on titanium is achieved by induction heating at a high temperature under the O 2  + N 2 atmosphere. Furthermore, the surface of the composite film contains abundant oxygen vacancies, which is demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and focus ion beam (FIB) milling technology are used to further study the cross-sectional microstructure and composition, revealing the formation mechanism of the composite film. The results of the nanoindentation and electrochemical test show that the hardness and corrosion rate of the composite film are 3.45 and 0.2 times that of titanium respectively. Moreover, the composite film is favorable for the deposition of hydroxyapatite in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results of the in vitro cellular experiments demonstrate that the composite film significantly promotes the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of BMSCs. Overall, the composite film is desirable for its improved biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties, enabling it to have potential applications in the biomedical field.

Optically-driven nine-state memory and pattern recognition in a lead-free Tin-doped Cs2AgBiBr6 memristor for neuromorphic visual system

Danruoyu Wang,Zhizhuo Zhang,Yashi Chen,Shun Wang,Fengzhen Lv,Yong Yang,Huimin Tang,Fuchi Liu

Imprinting vision as memory is essential for brain-inspired computing, requiring devices that integrate memory and processing. However, this technique development is hindered by limited memory states and segregated functionalities. In this work, a lead-free Sn-doped Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 (Cs 2 Ag 0.85 Sn 0.15 BiBr 6 ) optoelectronic memristor is proposed to integrate high-density memory and visual perception capabilities. For the first time, the nine-state memory driven by a 450 nm light at different intensities was achieved in the Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 -based device. These states remained stable for over 2000 s and through 620 cycles, demonstrating robust high-density memory capability and guaranteeing the accuracy of visual simulation. Random letter recognition and color image processing were performed by logic operations (AND, XOR) on the optically modulated resistance states. Key synaptic functions were also emulated, enabling a “learning-forgetting-relearning” process. Fundamentally, the optimal 15 % Sn doping at the Ag site narrowed the bandgap of films and increased the bromine vacancy concentration, enhancing the optically controlled memristive effect. The Schottky-like barrier at the Au/Cs 2 Ag 0.85 Sn 0.15 BiBr 6 interface was modulated by photo-induced carriers, which further influenced the multilevel memristive behavior. Our study offers a promising strategy for enabling synergistic sensing-memory-computing in a standalone device for human-machine interaction systems with visual data storage, buffering, and processing capabilities.

Molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical sensor based on tin(III) oxide/multi-walled carbon nanoflowers for ultrasensitive detection of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid

Wenming Yang,Qinghe Wang,Shengjie Zhu,Weihong Huang,Wanzhen Xu

The extensive use of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) calls for the development of robust methods for its trace-level monitoring in the environment, owing to the associated ecological and health risks. Herein, a novel molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is rationally designed for the ultrasensitive and specific detection of 2,4-D. The sensor is constructed on a synergistic Tin(III) oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube (Sn 3 O 4 /MWCNT) nanocomposite, where Sn 3 O 4 nanoflowers act as an efficient photoactive matrix and the MWCNTs serve as an electron highway. This synergy significantly enhances charge separation, suppresses recombination, and provides a strong, stable photocurrent. A highly selective molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) layer is subsequently fabricated on this composite via in situ electrophmerization of pyrrole, creating specific recognition cavities for 2,4-D. The resulting MIP-PEC sensor displays an ultra-broad linear range spanning five orders of magnitude (0.1 nM ∼ 100 μM) and achieves an impressively low detection limit of 16.1 pM (S/N = 3). It also demonstrates excellent selectivity against structural analogs, high reproducibility, and satisfactory recoveries (93.8–106.7%) in real water samples. This work not only provides a robust analytical tool for trace pesticide analysis but also offers a versatile sensing strategy through the integration of advanced nanomaterials with molecular imprinting technology.

S@CNT-graphene-TiN multi-dimensional composites with high sulfur content as the high-performance lithium-sulfur battery cathode materials

Yang Rong,Gong Sheng-min,Zhao Shang-qian,Zhao Chun-rong,Zhu Xiu-long,Sun Hao-bo,Zhang Li

S@CNT-G-TiN multi-dimensional composite materials with above 90 wt.% sulfur content were successfully synthesized via a facile suspension deposition method. The as-prepared S@CNT-G-TiN composite materials delivered an excellent initial specific capacity of 1291 and 642 mAh/g at 0.1 C and 3 C, respectively. The S@CNT-G-TiN cathode with 7.5 mg/cm 2 sulfur loading exhibited a reversible areal capacity of 7.7 mAh/cm 2 after 100 cycles, which proved that the S@CNT-G-TiN cathode was favored for the construction of high sulfur loading Li-S batteries. The superior electrochemical performance could be attributed to the specific CNT-G-TiN host, which provide a conductive network in the electrode and suppress the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). 5 Ah Li-S pouch cell was also fabricated by using the S@CNT-G-TiN cathode, which exhibited high-energy density of 401 Wh/kg and retained a stable cycling performance with an average capacity fading of 0.2% per cycle after 50 cycles, indicating the potential applications of S@CNT-G-TiN composite materials in high-performance Li-S batteries.

Iron tuning electronic structure of nano-TiN embedded in carbon nanofibers as efficient single-atom catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Guohao Zhu,Ze Li,Hao Guo,Guangchao Li,Youbin Zheng,Xin Liu,Haijun Pan,Liang Dong,Jianbing Zang,Shaopei Jia

Despite having a similar electronic structure to Pt, TiN exhibits poor catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Doping transition metal (M) atoms into TiN can enhance its ORR catalytic activity by creating MN x structures similar to those found in M and N codoped carbon materials . Notably, TiN demonstrates better stability than carbon materials. Herein, a hybrid of M-doped TiN and N-doped carbon nanofibers (M-TiN/NCNFs) was prepared via electrospinning followed by thermal treatment. Among the prepared M-TiN/NCNFs, Fe-TiN/NCNFs exhibited the highest ORR catalytic activity and excellent stability. The FeN 5 structure in Fe-TiN/NCNFs was identified as the active site. Density functional theory calculations indicated the moderate interaction between Fe and O (Fe–O bond) is a key factor for the optimal ORR catalytic activity of Fe-TiN/NCNFs. The number of antibonding electrons in molecular orbital of M–O bond can serve as a descriptor for distinguishing the ORR catalytic activities of M-TiN/NCNFs.

Growing Platinum-Ruthenium-Tin ternary alloy nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide for strong ligand effect toward enhanced ethanol oxidation reaction

Qing Qing Xia,Lian Ying Zhang,Zhi Liang Zhao,Chang Ming Li

Uniform Pt 1 Ru 0.5 Sn 0.5 ternary alloy nanoparticles are in situ deposited on reduced graphene oxide (Pt 1 Ru 0.5 Sn 0.5 -RGO) through its functional groups and defects as nucleation sites to greatly electrocatalyze ethanol oxidation reaction for much higher mass current densities, larger apparent specific current densities and better stability than commercial Pt-C catalyst (Pt-C(commer)). Mechanistic studies indicate that the excellent electrocatalytic activity and anti-poisoning are resulted from a strong ligand effect of the ternary alloy components, in which the charge transfer is boosted while decreasing the density of states close to the Fermi level of Pt to reduce bond energy between Pt and CO-like adsorbates for greatly improved anti-poisoning ability. This work holds a great promise to fabricate a high performance anode catalyst with a low Pt loading for direct ethanol fuel cells.

Coupling bentonite-mediated crystallization regulation and MXene/TiN-enabled multiscale photothermal conversion network to construct efficient composite phase change materials

Xianglong Tang,Kun Liu,Danling Meng,Kangle Cheng,Ya Hu,Xinyv Xu,Hanbing Zhang,Zhangfa Tong

Cellulose aerogel-based composite phase change materials (CPCMs) offer a promising pathway to achieve solar-driven thermoelectric conversion, yet their performance is often hindered by intrinsic limitations in thermal conductivity, crystallization kinetics, and form-stability. Herein, we report an interfacially self-assembled bacterial cellulose (BC)/TiN/V 2 C aerogel designed to encapsulate a bentonite (BT)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) mixture (BTV-BP). The synergistic effect of heterogeneous nucleation sites provided by hydrogen bonding interactions and nanoscale confinement within the BT layers significantly reduces the nucleation energy barrier for PEG, thus increasing the crystallization rate by at least 100%. Besides, a unique fish-scale patterned structure and microencapsulated aggregates formed by BT/PEG intercalation collaboratively reduce the PEG leakage rate to only 1.81%. Additionally, thanks to the gradient size coupling distribution of V 2 C and TiN over the aerogel, the photothermal conversion efficiency of BTV-BP reaches 92.8%, and the thermal conductivity enhancement rate is up to 433%. Notably, the advanced applications in solar-thermoelectric generation of BTV-BP exhibit a stable power of 3 mW under 1.5-sun irradiation, which can sustain long-term operation of an LED panel even in darkness, along with excellent self-cleaning performance. This work provides new insight into utilizing cost-effective clay minerals to construct efficient and stable solar-driven aerogel-based CPCMs.

Synergistic Bulk and Surface Modification in Atomic Layer Deposited Tin Oxide for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules

Chao Wang,Yanping Mo,Junbo Gong,Yang Jiang,Qinyang Huang,Xiaofeng Gao,Benjia Zhu,Mi Xu,Chengfei Li,Fuzhi Huang

Atomic-layer-deposited (ALD) tin oxide (SnO2) electron-transport layers (ETLs) generally underperform in n-i-p structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs) compared to solution-processed counterparts. The inherent organic residues in ALD-SnO2 disrupt crystallinity and obstruct charge transfer, while they accelerate perovskite interfacial degradation. To address this, an invasive solution bath post-treatment is introduced by using sodium 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonate (DMPS) as the additive in the solution bath. DMPS, bearing thiol and sulfonate groups, simultaneously chelates the surface and the inner layer of the SnO2 layer, successfully removing organic residues from the bulk and surface while suppressing water-induced morphological damage. Consequently, this synergistic modification yields champion efficiencies of 25.26% for small-size cells and 22.42% for 12.5 cm2 mini-modules, alongside significantly enhanced operational stability. Our work offers a scalable route for integrating high-performance ALD-SnO2 in large-area n-i-p solar modules.

Corrosion Behaviors of Iron, Chromium, Nickel, Low-Carbon Steel, and Four Types of Stainless Steels in Liquid Antimony-Tin Alloy

Liu Wei,Yin Huayi,Du Kaifa,Yang Bing,Wang Dihua

Corrosion resistance of metals and alloys toward liquid metals determines the service performances and lifetime of the devices using liquid metals. This paper studies the static corrosion behaviors of iron, chromium, nickel, low carbon steel, and four types of stainless steels (SS410, SS430, SS304, and SS316L) in liquid Sb-Sn at 500°C, aiming to screen corrosion-resistant stainless steel for Li||Sb-Sn liquid metal batteries (LMBs). The corrosion rates of Fe and Ni are 0.94 μm/h and 6.03 μm/h after 160 h measurement, respectively. Cr shows a low corrosion rate of < 0.05 μm/h, which is due to the formation of a relatively stable Cr-Sb layer that may be able to prevent the interdiffusion between the solid substrate and liquid Sb-Sn. Ni has a high corrosion rate because the formed Ni-Sb and Ni-Sn compounds are soluble in the liquid Sb-Sn. The corrosion products of both pure metals and SS can be predicted by thermodynamic and phase diagram analysis. Among the four types of stainless steel, SS430 shows the best corrosion resistance toward liquid Sb-Sn with a corrosion rate of 0.19 μm/h. Therefore, a liquid Sb-Sn resistant material should have a high Cr content and a low Ni content, and this principle is applicable to design metallic materials not only for LMBs but also for other devices using liquid Sb- and Sn-containing liquid metals.

An integrative method to prepare low-platinum/fluorine doped tin oxide counter electrode for cost-effective dye-sensitized solar cells

Ling Chen,Ji Xu,Zhaoxiang Li,Jiangbin Xia

Conventional pyrolytic platinum loaded on commercial F-doped tin oxide (Pt//cFTO) conductive glass as counter electrode (CE) is a crucial component of DSSCs. In this paper, an integrative method was used to prepare platinum loaded on in-house-made iFTO glass (Pt//iFTO) without cFTO glass and the newly synthesized Pt//iFTO electrodes were applied as CEs in the DSCs. Compared with common Pt//cFTO electrode loading amount of Pt of 32.17   μg   cm −2 which shows an efficiency of 6.70% as a CE in DSSCs, Pt//iFTO electrode loading less amount of Pt of 13.01   μg   cm −2 still displays a slight higher cell efficiency of 6.77%. The integrative method requires simple equipment, easy operation, and discards the cFTO glass and significantly reduces costs. Meanwhile, Pt catalyst layer and iFTO substrate layer were formed at the same time in this method, saving a lot of thermal energy, which provides a new method for preparing electrodes needed high temperature post-processing.

TiN/TiC heterostructures embedded with single tungsten atoms enhance polysulfide entrapment and conversion for high-capacity lithium-sulfur battery applications

Ling Zhang,Jiaying Bi,Tao Liu,Xiaorong Chu,Haijian Lv,Daobin Mu,Borong Wu,Feng Wu

The rapid decay of the charge/discharge capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries due to the sluggish reaction kinetics and the shuttling behaviour of soluble polysulfides significantly restricts their practical application in energy storage systems. Herein, two-dimensional TiN/TiC heterostructures embedded with single tungsten atoms (SWA) are developed and introduced as a modified interlayer (SWA-TiN/TiC) in Li-S battery devices. The SWA-TiN/TiC material has a large specific surface area, which provides a physical barrier while supplying numerous active sites for polysulfides reactions. TiN and TiC both demonstrate excellent electronic conductivity and catalytic activity, which facilitate the conversion of polysulfides. Meanwhile, the uniformly-dispersed SWAs significantly enhance the chemical affinity with polysulfides and accelerate their redox reactions. As a result, the sulfur cathodes coated with the SWA-TiN/TiC interlayer achieve excellent rate performance and long-term cycling stability. An ultrahigh specific capacity of up to 1577.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C is achieved, and even at high sulfur loading (6.25 mg cm −2 ), a high areal capacity of 4.63 mAh cm −2 is obtained. This work highlights the potential of single metallic atoms on non-carbonaceous matrix for the development of high-performance catalysts that can achieve strong polysulfides immobilization for practical applications in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Observation of tunable surface plasmon resonances and surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) based on indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticle substrates

Yan Ma,Qianwen Li,Siyu Wang,Yanan Wang,Hongye Liu,Xu Wang,Bing Zhao,Ziping Jiang,Weidong Ruan

The application of surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) is severely restricted in many fields due to the SEIRA substrates are constructed mainly from expensive noble metals. Therefore, the development of new SEIRA substrates other than the noble metallic ones is very valuable. Here we introduced a new semiconductor SEIRA substrate, the indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles (NPs), to study the SEIRA property. The results demonstrate that the ITO NPs show the SEIRA property and the enhancement is dependent to the doping ratio of the heteroatoms of tin. The ITO NPs with the 5% atomic doping ratio show the highest SEIRA enhancement factor ( EF ), which is about 24. The limit of detection (LOD) of the 1,1′-dicarboxyferrocene (dcFc) molecule was as low as 10 −5  mol/L. The present study proves that the tin-doped indium oxide can be used as a new and inexpensive semiconductor SEIRA substrate. It also proves that the doped semiconductor NPs have strong potentials for being used as emerging SEIRA substrates.
