Closing the Deep-Blue Gap: Realizing Narrow-Band Deep-Blue Emission with Strong n-UV Excitation by Cationic Substitution for Full-Spectrum Warm W-LED Lighting

Lin Liu,Shanshan Peng,Lei Fu,Yuxuan Guo,Xia Sun,Liang Song,Junpeng Shi,Yun Zhang

Since the strong blue light from the conventional blue chip has negative effects on human health, near-ultraviolet (n-UV) white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) have been widely studied. However, the photoluminescence spectrum generated by tricolor (blue, green, and red) phosphors contains a notable cavity in the deep-blue region (400–430 nm), which reduces the color quality. In this work, we report a novel series of narrow-band deep-blue-emitting phosphors with strong n-UV excitation, Ln2Si2O7:Bi3+ (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu, Sc), and realize the tuning of emission from 422 to 403 nm via cationic substitution, which bridges the deep-blue gap. All of these phosphors are effectively excited by n-UV radiation at approximately 370 nm and exhibit narrow-band deep-blue emission with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) < 50 nm. Among them, Sc2Si2O7:Bi3+ generates 403 nm deep-blue emission with a 38 nm FWHM under 372 nm n-UV excitation, with high luminescence intensity and excellent thermal stability. Finally, 365 nm n-UV-pumped phosphor-converted (pc) W-LED devices are fabricated by combining Sc2Si2O7:Bi3+ and commercially available phosphors, and they have a high color-rendering index (Ra) of 95.4 and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3736 K. This result suggests that these phosphors have potential applications in full-spectrum warm white lighting.

Polyphenol mediated α-FeOOH/g-C3N4 heterojunction membrane for fast purification of surfactant-stabilized O/W emulsions with super-wetting and Photo-Fenton self-cleaning functions

Hongshan Jia,Yingqing Zhan,Fei Zhu,Ximin Chen,Yajie Lei,Xinyue Duan,Jie Liu

In the practical purification of oily wastewater, the application of polymer-based membrane is greatly restricted due to the oil adhesion and complicated fouling problems. Herein, to conquer the aforementioned challenges, we prepared the polyphenol mediated Photo-Fenton self-cleaning and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic α-FeOOH/g-C 3 N 4 @PVDF composite membrane via simple vacuum-assisted self-assembly technology. The g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets modified by tannic acid were introduced into the surface of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane, in which the intercalation structure was regulated by the random interpenetration of α-FeOOH nanorods . The abundant hydroxyl and amino groups and the rough micro-nano structure formed by intercalation structure were favorable for the superhydrophilic feature (WCA = 0°, UOCA>150°), thus resulting in ultra-low oil adhesion. Specially, the intercalation structure improved the water permeation channel, further promoting the water/oil separation flux. Therefore, the composite membrane exhibited superior separation flux (452.35–650.21 L m −2  h −1 ) and separation efficiency (>99.06 %) for various surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Moreover, thanks to the Photo-Fenton reaction, the composite membrane showed excellent degradation efficiency on simulated pollutants (various dyes) within 60 min (MeB: 95.55 %, CR: 90.83 %, MO: 98.90 %, CV: 95.11 %), showing satisfactory photocatalytic self-cleaning performance. This work provides a strategy for the potential application of polymer-based membranes in the treatment of complex surfactant-stabilized emulsion wastewater from petrochemical industry.

Underlying mechanism of sucrose esters on myofibrillar protein O/W emulsion gel behaviour under different ionic strengths: Focus on emulsion characterisation, protein structural changes and molecular interactions

Xiang Li,Bo Wang,Wenwen Hou,Jie Tang,Hongbin Lin,Junqiang Lian,Qian Liu,Mingfeng Xu,Yuan Ma,Dong Yu,Dong Zhang,Jiaxin Chen

The effects of sucrose ester concentrations (0.1, 1.0 and 10 mM) on myofibrillar protein emulsion gel at 0.3 and 0.6 M ionic strengths were investigated‌. At 0.3 M ionic strength, an elevated sucrose ester concentration increased the droplet size (from 31.86 to 55.97 μm) and absolute zeta potential (from 29.60 to 47.57 mV). Furthermore, it promoted protein folding at 0.3 M ionic strength but induced unfolding at 0.6 M. Elevated sucrose ester concentration reduced the α-helix content (from 45 % to 20 %) at 0.6 M ionic strength. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that high ionic strength promoted stable binding between sucrose ester and myosin. Moreover, higher sucrose ester concentrations weakened gels, increased free water content and enhanced viscous dominance in rheology. These findings provided meaningful insights into the mechanism of the surfactant-mediated formation of myofibrillar protein emulsion gels under varying ionic strengths.

Enhanced removal of P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) generated oxyanions using Fe-MOF as adsorbent from hydrometallurgical waste liquid: Exploring the influence of ionic polymerization

Wenjuan Wang,Yanfang Huang,Guihong Han,Bingbing Liu,Shengpeng Su,Yizhuang Wang,Yubin Xue

Environmentally hazardous P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) generated oxyanions exist widely in the waste liquid of nonferrous hydrometallurgy . In this work, Fe-MOF material was simply prepared via solvothermal synthesis and then used as an adsorbent to remove P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) oxyanions from hydrometallurgical waste liquid . Several important parameters, including solution pH, oxyanion concentration, contact time, adsorbent amount, temperature and coexistent heavy metal ions , were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that adsorption process was almost pH-independent over a broad range of pH 3.0–10.0. The adsorption efficiency was strongly associated with the chemical species of oxyanions. The higher polymerisation degree of oxyanions was more favourable for removal efficiency. Additionally, the maximum removal efficiencies for P(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) oxyanions under optimum conditions were approximately 100%. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of oxyanions on the adsorbent separately belonged to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. XPS analysis revealed that inner-sphere complexation played a dominant role in the adsorption removal process. Fe-MOFs with pH-independent properties, abundant binding sites and high stability are prospective adsorbents for treating waste liquids in the hydrometallurgical industry.

Construction of carboxylated chitosan/unsaturated polyester resin aerogels with layered porous structures for efficient adsorption of dyes and heavy metals and rapid separation of o/w emulsions

Zheng Zhang,Pengju Miao,Daning Lang,Jiyang Li,Ronglan Wu,Wei Wang,Chao Yang,Lu Wang,Jihong Fu

With the acceleration of global industrialization, a large amount of polluted wastewater is discharged indiscriminately, which both pollutes the environment and threatens human health. In this study, by constructing a binary system of unsaturated polyester resin/carboxychitosan, and improving the inherent defects of carboxychitosan aerogel, we successfully prepared aerogels with high porosity, low density, and laminar porous structure for water remediation by using a combination of the sol-gel method and directional freezing technology. Thanks to the synergistic effect of surface wettability and special pore structure, the aerogel not only adsorbs and separates MB and Pb(II) efficiently with a separation efficiency of more than 99 %, but also has a separation efficiency of 99.7 % for the o/w emulsions, which can be reused. The adsorption process is consistent with Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm, and is mainly influenced by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Compared with other water body remediation materials, the chemical durability and structural stability of this aerogel are more excellent, and it maintains the efficient purification ability for multiple pollutants under special treatments such as prolonged UV aging and mechanical agitation, and is expected to be an ideal material for the synergistic treatment of multiple pollutants in complex environments.

Biomass-derived carbon aerogel loaded with V, W co-doped molybdenum disulfide and MXene: A solar-driven enhanced platform for adsorption of Cs+ and Sr2+ from nuclear wastewater

Na Yang,Xu Guo,Jing Yu,Yu Zhang,Qi Liu,Jiahui Zhu,Hongsen Zhang,Jun Wang

The integration of external field-enhanced effects such as the photothermal effect has emerged as a promising strategy for improving the adsorption efficiency of adsorbents toward Cs + and Sr 2+ due to its energy saving and high efficiency. Herein, a multifunctional photothermal adsorbent is rationally designed and synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method and electrostatic assembly by combining V, W co-doped MoS 2 , P-MXene, and biomass-derived carbon aerogel (VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C). Doping of V and W induces the phase transition of MoS 2 to the more active 1T phase, providing more accessible active adsorption sites. Moreover, the 3D porous structure of the biomass-derived carbon aerogel offers sufficient water transport channels, accelerating the diffusion kinetics of Cs + and Sr 2+ . The excellent photothermal conversion capability of the VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C composite drives water evaporation, which promotes the increase of local concentrations of Cs + and Sr 2+ in the water medium. This synergistic mechanism combining phase engineering and photothermal enhancement collectively contributes to the excellent performance in Cs + and Sr 2+ capture. The VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C demonstrates adsorption capacities of 158.3 mg/g for Cs + and 110.1 mg/g for Sr 2+ within 1 h, respectively, under photothermal enhancement. Simultaneously, the adsorbent exhibits excellent ion selectivity and reusability. The possible adsorption mechanisms mainly involve surface complexation and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C demonstrates a long-term solar-driven desalination capability with an evaporation rate of 1.98 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in natural seawater. Notably, the VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C also shows promising application potential for dye removal and oil adsorption. This work provides a universal strategy for designing multifunctional integrated adsorbents and promotes their practical applications in radioactive wastewater treatment and seawater desalination

AgWOS Bimetallic Oxysulfides With Synergistic Coupling of Heterovalent States and Vacancy Defects for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution: An Insightful Case of the W-Doping Plus Hydrazine-Driven Design

Baoqian Yang,Tsz Lok Wan,Xinru Wu,Dong-Hau Kuo,Haoyu Wang,Kening Xiang,Cuizhu Li,Tao Liu,Dongfang Lu,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

Recent studies have indicated that the heterovalent states and vacancy defect structures in bimetallic oxysulfide play a crucial role in pollutant reduction reactions. However, systematic investigations into the synergistic coupling between heterovalent states and vacancy defect structures during the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER) remain scarce. Herein, a tungsten/oxygen (W/O) co-doped Ag 2 S bimetallic oxysulfide (AgWOS) with heterovalent W 5+ /W 6+ states and sulfur vacancy (Vs) defects was synthesized via a facile thermohydrolysis method. The combination of W-doping and hydrazine-driven conditions induces abundant Vs defects, which act as active sites for water adsorption and activation, thereby facilitating proton generation in the PHER process. Moreover, the hydrazine-driven condition promotes the formation of heterovalent W 5+ /W 6+ states, which provide efficient electron transfer channels between W 5+ and W 6+ to boost PHER performance. The optimized AgWOS-2 with a balanced heterovalent n (W 5+ )/ n (W 6+ ) ratio and a high concentration of Vs achieves an impressive PHER rate of 1074.2 µmol·h −1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 6.21% at 420 nm in pure water. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergy between heterovalent states and vacancy defects lowers the water dissociation barrier, accelerates *H generation, and boosts electron transfer between W 5+ and W 6+ . Moreover, S-3 p and O-2 p orbital hybridization suppresses photocorrosion and improves catalyst stability, enabling AgWOS-2 to retain 91.6% of its initial PHER activity after ten cycles. This study elucidates the synergistic interaction mechanism between heterovalent states and vacancy defects in a bimetallic oxysulfide, offering valuable insights for the rational design of efficient and durable PHER catalysts.

Phosphorus-modified Y zeolite supported Ni-W-S catalyst for selective hydrocracking of LCO to C6-C8 chemical raw materials in refining-chemical integration: effect of phosphorus content

Dai Xiaojun,Cheng Yan,Wei Qiang,Zhou Yasong

In the petrochemical industry, a significant method of achieving high-value usage of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in light cycle oil is the moderate hydrocracking of these hydrocarbons into C 6 -C 8 chemical raw materials. In order to prepare NiW-S supported catalysts, the impregnation technique was used to modify the small-crystal Y zeolites with P. The catalytic performance of the catalysts was assessed using naphthalene as the model chemical. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts and P-modified Y zeolites were examined in relation to the impacts of P modification. The results show that the introduction of P has a negative effect on the structural characteristics and acidity of Y zeolite, and this negative effect increases with the increase of P content. The introduction of P reduces the reduction temperature of the active metal of the catalyst and improves the reducibility of the active metal of the catalyst. Adding appropriate P species enhances the active phase characteristics of the corresponding Ni-W-S supported catalysts while weakening the metal-support interactions of the corresponding Ni-W-S supported catalysts. However, too much P species has a negative effect on the active phase characteristics of the catalysts. Naphthalene conversion and C 6 -C 8 selectivity were shown to be significantly influenced by the synergistic catalysis of acid sites and metal sites of the catalysts. The catalyst based on 2% P modified Y zeolite exhibited the best selectivity of C 6 -C 8 compounds. The yield of C 6 -C 8 of 2% P modified Y zeolite-based catalyst increased by 22.34% when compared to the unmodified catalyst. It is anticipated to serve as a guide for the high-value use of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in light cycle oil in petrochemical industry.

Improving the antioxidant ability of gelatin-chitosan film by incorporating an oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion emulsified by betanin-loaded quaternary ammonium-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles

Jiahao Xu,Zhengang Zhao

Active food packaging films with biological activities are a promising food technology, and antioxidant ability is one of the most important biological activities. In this study, an antioxidant active packaging film was prepared by directly blending gelatin, chitosan and a novel O/W Pickering emulsion and then drying. The emulsion was prepared from two antioxidant compounds, Mesona Chinensis essential oils (MCB-EO) and betanin-loaded quaternary ammonium-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (betanin-QAMSNPs), which provide this emulsion with high antioxidant activity. After adding the emulsion, the water content (26.63 %), water solubility (28.3 %), and water contact angle (86.2°) of the film are lower than those of the gelatin-chitosan film. The thickness and water vapour permeabilities of the betanin-Pickering emulsion film are 275.25 µm and 4.802 × 10 −10 g·s −1 ·m −1 ·Pa −1 , respectively, which are higher than those of gelatin-chitosan films. Adding betanin-Pickering emulsions can decrease the roughness of the surface, which is observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The DPPH and ABTs + free radical scavenging capacities of the betanin-Pickering emulsion films are 21.77 % and 91.87 %, respectively, which are higher than those of the gelatin-chitosan films (4.64 % and 61.15 %), indicating that adding the betanin-Pickering emulsion can enhance the antioxidant ability of the gelatin-chitosan films. The betanin-Pickering emulsion films can inhibit the oxidation of soybean oil. In conclusion, in this study, a novel food packaging film was successfully prepared and has potential application as an antioxidant food packaging material.

Boosting the catalytic activity of Cu2O via forming composite with both Cu and metal oxides MO2 (M = Mo and W) by tuning its band structure and Lewis acidity

Yi Pei,Jie Li,Zhaoyang Wang,Wei Zhong,Chunxin Lu,Zhongquan Shen,Nianlong Qian,Xiaoming Liu

In this work, composite materials (Cu-Cu 2 O/MO 2 , M = Mo and W) and their thermally treated form were prepared and characterized by using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UPS) and cyclic voltammetry. Their catalytic performance on aerobic oxidation of various alcohols under mild conditions was investigated with N-methylimidazole (NMI) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) as the co-catalysts. Of the materials, the thermally treated MoO 2 -based material exhibited the best performance and durability. Compared to Cu-Cu 2 O, the involvement of MO 2 significantly enhances the catalytic activity on the oxidation. Our results suggest that the presence of MO 2 not only raises the energy level of VBM of Cu 2 O which is beneficial to O 2 activation and generates internal electric field pointing to the catalytic center (Cu 2 O) which would accelerate the electron transfer from the substrate to the catalyst through forming heterojunction with both Cu and MO 2 , but also disperses the catalytic center. Further, the Lewis acidity of MO 2 with appropriate strength can bring the substrate closer to the catalytic center via adsorption. But appropriate acidity is essential as easy on–off adsorption is desired in the catalysis. Thermal treatment generates oxidation state VI species of stronger acidity which offsets the effect of the raised VBM energy level.

Enhancing Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenolysis Performance for Efficient and Selective C–O Bond Cleavage in Lignin: A Synergistic Interaction between Metal Sites and Oxygen Defects in Ni–W Catalysts

Han-Bing Gao,Yue-Lun Wang,Dao-Ran Liu,Jin-Xuan Xie,Le-Le Qiu,Jian Xiao,Jing Liang,Fang-Jing Liu,Yun-Peng Zhao

Achieving high efficiency and selectivity in cleaving aryl C–O bonds is critical for lignin valorization and the production of aromatic chemicals. A green and sustainable approach has been developed using bimetallic Ni–W catalysts, which controlled the hydrogen supply and mediated hydrogen transfer via in situ hydrogen donors. An appropriate W/Ni ratio is essential for enhancing the supply of active hydrogen, the adsorption capacity for reactive molecules, and the efficiency of hydrogen transfer, thereby optimizing the overall catalytic performance. A comprehensive investigation was conducted on the factors influencing the catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives, focusing on the reaction temperature, solvent, hydrogen source, pressure, and duration. Under optimal conditions (180 °C, 1.0 MPa N2, and <2.5 h), various lignin-derived aryl ethers achieved complete conversion with 100% monomer selectivity. This study demonstrated the excellent reusability of the Ni–W catalyst for four cycles. More significantly, the mechanisms underlying active hydrogen transfer, transfer hydrogenolysis, and bimetallic interactions were elucidated. The integration of Ni and W species significantly enhanced the synergy among active metal sites, oxygen defects, and acid sites. This synergistic mechanism enabled H• and H+ to function as the primary active hydrogen species. Furthermore, the in situ generation and targeted migration of H• radicals and H+ ions facilitated the preferential cleavage of C–O bonds over the hydrogenation of aromatic units within lignin, leading to the formation of high-value aromatic monomers.

Preparation of W-N-C single atom catalyst and Cu3(HHTP)2 metal-organic framework dual-decorated graphene nanoplatelet flexible electrode arrays for the rapid detection of carbendazim in vegetables

Xin Zhang,Shuyan Miao,Wenjie Song,Xian Liu,Can Wu,Tian Gan

It is highly desirable to develop a low-cost and rapid detection method for trace levels of carbendazim fungicide residues, which would be beneficial for improving human health and mitigating environmental issues. Herein, isolated single tungsten atoms were implanted onto well-organized metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived N-doped carbons to form W-N-C single-site heterojunctions with ultrahigh electrocatalytic activity . The coupling of W-N-C with Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 , an electronically conductive MOF with a large surface area and porous structure, exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic performance for the oxidation of carbendazim (CBZ) when they were used for decorating graphene nanoplatelet flexible electrode arrays fabricated via template-assisted scalable filtration. A wide linear range (3.0 nM–50 μM) with an ultra-low detection limit of 0.97 nM and fast response was achieved for CBZ analysis. Moreover, the sensing platform has been utilised to monitor CBZ levels in vegetable samples with satisfactory recovery rates of 97.2–102% and a low relative standard deviation of 1.9%.
