Partially oxidizing methane into syngas via a two-step chemical looping scheme is a promising option for methane transformation. Providing the optimum lattice oxygen to selectively produce syngas represents the major challenge for the development of oxygen carrier materials in chemical looping processes. This paper describes the design of WO3-based oxygen carriers as the primary source of lattice oxygen with high melting points and attractive syngas selectivity. To further enhance the lattice oxygen availability and methane conversion capacity, NiO nanoclusters are introduced, considering the doping effect on chemical bonding disruption in both bulk and surface regions. For Ni0.5WOx/Al2O3, the nickel cations incorporated into the bulk of WO3 can strongly weaken the tungsten–oxygen bond strength and increase the availability of lattice oxygen. The surface-grafted nickel species can effectively activate methane molecules and catalyze the partial oxidation reaction. Total methane conversion and syngas yield can be substantially increased by about 2.7-fold in comparison with unmodified WO3/Al2O3. This work demonstrates that the bulk and surface modifications are feasible to tailor the active lattice oxygen of oxygen-carrying materials in chemical looping processes.

A new nanocomposite was reported as a good-performance photocatalyst, i.e., double-shelled, positively and negatively charged, nanostructured hollow spheres with supported Au nanoparticles (NPs). TiO2, WO3, and Au NPs were coated successively onto the functionalized polystyrene (PS) template spheres. The as-synthesized product PS@TiO2@WO3/Au nanocomposites were calcined at elevated temperature and then intact double-shelled TiO2@WO3/Au hollow spheres were obtained. The dispersity, morphology, size, and lattice of TiO2@WO3/Au hollow spheres were investigated by SEM and TEM. The presence of TiO2 hollow sphere and WO3/Au shell was proved by HAADF-STEM and XRD images. The photodegradation activity for rhodamine B and trimesic acid (i.e., color and colorless aromatic pollutants) in decreasing order were TiO2@WO3/Au, TiO2–WO3, P25. Under visible-light irradiation, the photodegradation rate of rhodamine B and trimesic acid for TiO2@WO3/Au was 94% and 95%, respectively, which exhibited a significant increase of 62% and 80% as compared with P25. The synergistic effect of coupling TiO2 hollow spheres with WO3 shell and Au NPs on photocatalytic performance was proved by this article. First, Au NPs deposited in WO3 shell and loaded on TiO2 shell separately act as electron trap site and surface plasmon resonance-sensitizer, respectively, and hence the photogenerated electron–hole separation rate was improved. Second, the visible-light absorption of TiO2 hollow spheres was increased by the coexistence of WO3 and Au and unique hierarchical mesoporous architectures of TiO2@WO3/Au. Finally, the surface charge of TiO2@WO3/Au and rhodamine B was negative and positive, respectively, the affinity between them could be improved by electrical attractions, and then the major bottleneck in heterogeneous photocatalysis (i.e., poor affinity between pollutants and photocatalyst) could be broken. The optimal hollow sphere size of TiO2@WO3/Au was 450 nm, which was proved by the photodegradation of aromatic pollutants and photoreduction of Cr(VI).

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets loaded with WO3 nanoparticles were prepared via heat treatment of g-C3N4 together with WOx-EDA nanobelts. The thermal treatment temperature and WOx-EDA precursor play the key role in enhancing the interaction between WO3 nanoparticles and g-C3N4 nanosheets, because the temperature of thermal decomposition of WOx-EDA (∼400 °C) is close to the thermal exfoliation temperature of g-C3N4. The structure evolution and promotion effect of the nanocomposites in photocatalytic performance were well studied. It is found that WO3 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on the surface of the g-C3N4 nanosheets, and the close integration of WO3 and g-C3N4 lead to the high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, a larger specific area and increase of visible light absorption are also of benefit to speed up the degradation of organic dye. Also, the mechanism of the photocatalytic reaction and its reutilization properties were investigated.

A novel nanoplate-like tungsten trioxide was grown on a wood substrate using a facile one-step ethanol-assisted hydrothermal method. The morphology, chemical composition, crystalline structure, optical properties, thermostability, wettability and roughness of the WO 3 -treated woods were investigated. The results showed that the uniform WO 3 nano-plates exhibited an edge length of 1553 nm and a thickness of 102 nm. These structures were observed to be highly crystallized with hexagonal structures. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectrum (RS) analysis demonstrated that the pure WO 3, without other impurities, could be grown on a wood substrate. The as-obtained product appeared a remarkable blue shift than the pristine wood by UV–vis analysis and had an obvious color response to UV light irradiation at 365 nm. The thermogravimetry (TG) analysis showed that the maximum degradation rate of the WO 3 -treated wood exhibited slower degradation rates when compared to the native wood control. Through the octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) treatment, the as-fabricated product exhibited a water contact angle (WCA) of 152°, indicative of its superhydrophobic property, which was ascribed to the low surface energy of OTS and the large surface roughness of the product.

Gd-doped WO 3 nano-stalagmites (GW-NSs) film has been successfully prepared on indium-doped tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates by co-sputtering deposition. Gd dopants can facilitate the vertically-aligned growth of WO 3 nano-stalagmites on the WO 3 -nanoparticle seed layer. The microstructure analysis shows that the GW-NSs film with optimized aspect ratio and array density is fabricated with Gd/W = 0.6 % in atomic ratio. Such GW-NSs electrode (active area: 1 × 1.5 cm 2 ) exhibits large transmittance modulation (ΔT = 52.7 % at 633 nm), high coloration efficiency (87.3 cm 2 C −1 at 633 nm), fast switching speed (5.9/13.1 s for coloration/bleaching), large diffusion coefficient (9.52 × 10 −10 cm 2 s −1 ) and long-term cycling stability (>2000) under an applied voltage of ± 1.0 V, which can be attributed to a shorten Li + diffusion distance and a large-area contact with the electrolyte. Importantly, the GW-NSs film also shows superior capacitive performance (calculated areal capacitance of 8.44 mF cm −2 at 0.4 mA cm −2 ) and long-term cyclic stability (capacitance retention rate is 87.4 % after 2000 cycles). Furthermore, we fabricated the bifunctional smart window device combined with NiO counterpart electrode, which has the ability to visually monitor the level of stored energy from rapid and reversible coloration, indicating the potential applications of GW-NSs in both electrochromic and energy-storage fields.

In this work, core-shell WO 3 -SnO 2 (CS-WS) nanofibers (NFs) have been successfully synthesized via a coaxial electrospinning approach. The structure and morphology characteristics of the resultant products were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). To investigate the sensing mechanism of the CS-WS NFs, sensors based on SnO 2 NFs, WO 3 NFs, and SnO 2 -WO 3 composite NFs were fabricated respectively, and their gas sensing properties were investigated by using CO, ethanol, toluene, acetone, and ammonia as the test gas. The results indicated that the CS-WS NFs exhibited a good response to ethanol (5.09 at 10 ppm) and short response/recovery time (18.5 s and 282 s) compared with the other test gases. The enhanced ethanol sensing properties of CS-WS NFs compared with those of SnO 2 NFs were closely associated with the CS structure and its derivative effect due to the different work function of SnO 2 and WO 3 . The approach proposed in this study may contribute to the realization of more sensitive metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) core-shell heterostructure sensors.

Although self-polarized piezoelectric semiconductor photocatalysts significantly enhance the separation of internally generated photocarriers, their photocatalytic performance is constrained by insufficient internal polarisation and a wide bandgap. Additionally, the low concentration of oxygen in contaminated water limits the effectiveness of such photocatalysts. To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first to determine that the piezoelectric properties of Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO), was due to the polarisation displacement of the MoO 6 octahedron that occurred along the x -axis, as revealed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Subsequently, the self-polarisation characteristics of BMO were enhanced and the bandgap was reduced through Fe 3+ doping, as confirmed via atomic force microscopy, hysteresis loop measurements and DFT analysis, resulting in an increase in surface potential from 30.41 to 46.80 mV. Furthermore, an S-scheme WO 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 :Fe 3+ heterojunction was developed to improve the surface separation of photoelectron–hole pairs. The piezoelectric photocatalytic performance of this sample was evaluated through the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and oxygen generation. Results indicated that the degradation rate of RhB reached 98.63 % within 25 min under the synergistic influence of light and ultrasound, which was 1.85 and 9.60 times higher than those of Bi 2 MoO 6 and WO 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the optimal oxygen production efficiency was 167.41 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 . This study provides a novel approach for designing more efficient piezoelectric photocatalysts.

In this study, amorphous WO 3 thin films were deposited on indium-tin oxide substrates using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Anhydrous ethanol (AE) and propylene carbonate (PC) served as binary solvents, with the WO 3 films evaluated in AE + PC-LiClO 4 electrolytes. By adjusting the volume percentage of AE, the physical properties of the electrolytes were modified to improve the fluidity and wetting behavior. The analysis of several aspects, such as migration of ions, capillary flow of electrolyte and electrochemical reaction rate, highlights the important influence of AE + PC binary solvent in reducing the response time. Notably, WO 3 films in AE + PC-LiClO 4 electrolyte with a 7/8 volume percentage of AE demonstrated exceptional optical modulation (Δ T = 75.7 %) and fast response times ( t c = 6.41 s, t b = 2.29 s), alongside shortened the diffusion path, increased ion diffusion coefficients ( D a =4.4678 × 10 −10 cm 2 /s, D c = 8.2968 × 10 −10 cm 2 /s) and electrochemical active area. Based on these efforts, the feasibility of applying AE + PC binary solvent to WO 3 electrochromic thin films has been confirmed. These results offer valuable insights for the development of efficient electrolytes and their application in electrochromic devices.

The ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer, a popular transparent adhesive interlayer material for solar cell encapsulation, can be formed by a simple extrusion process at a relatively low temperature without the aid of an organic solvent. However, the inherently poor ionic conductivity (σ) restricts its application as a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) for laminated WO3-NiO electrochromic devices (ECDs). Here, we propose a strategy to improve the σ by a water modification in the EVA matrix. The results demonstrate that the sample treated at 50 °C and 25% relative humidity (RH) for 1 h exhibits a higher σ of 3.80 × 10–4 S cm–1, as well as a visual transmittance of more than 90%, a tensile strength of 1.61 MPa, and an excellent thermal stability up to 219 °C. Using this kind of EVA-based SPE (EVA-SPE) as the interlayer, WO3-NiO based ECDs with sizes varying from 2.5 × 5 to 20 × 20 cm2 have been successfully laminated and exhibit favorable EC performances. Besides, the water modification is conducive to an enlarged light modulation range (ΔT) for the laminated ECD in the near-infrared zone, ensuring a high energy efficiency when the device is used as a smart window in buildings.

Production of cyclohexanone through selective hydrogenation of phenol under mild conditions has attracted much attention. Herein, a NaOH-modified Pd/WO 3 rich in oxygen vacancies for selective hydrogenation of phenol was prepared through impregnation method. The highest catalytic activity was exhibited on NaOH-Pd/WO 3 with 25 wt % addition of NaOH, and phenol achieved 100 % conversion at 90 °C and 0.7 MPa H 2 for 2 h, with a cyclohexanone selectivity of 95.3 %. The turnover frequency (TOF) of NaOH-Pd/WO 3 is approximately 3.5 times higher than that of the Pd/WO 3 . Detailed catalyst characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the high activity and selectivity of NaOH-Pd/WO 3 for phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone are highly correlated with the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst. In-situ infrared and Raman analyses reveal that the OH - introduced by NaOH reacted with the lattice oxygen in WO 3 to abstract oxygen from the lattice, generating a significant number of oxygen vacancies. The possible reaction mechanisms for phenol hydrogenation were elucidated through combined density functional theory calculations and isotopic labeling experiments. This strategy of improving catalytic activity and selectivity by regulating the concentration of oxygen vacancies provides a theoretical basis for the design and optimization of industrial catalysts.

The development of a simple and efficient method for preparing porous tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) electrochromic films using structure-directing agents is highly urgent for their industrialization. To this end, this work presents an efficient approach using rapid co-pyrolysis of polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) and ammonium metatungstate (AMT) to produce mesoporous WO 3 thin films. The findings indicate that the concentration of PEG influences both the wettability of the precursor solution on the FTO substrate and the state of the PEG micelle solution, ultimately leading to WO 3 films with diverse morphologies after the co-pyrolysis of AMT and PEG. The porous structure significantly enhances hydrogen ion intercalation/deintercalation, and thus improves electrochromic properties. The optimized electrochromic films demonstrate a 54.5% optical modulation range at 633 nm, fast switching times (2.8 s for coloration and 1.5 s for bleaching), and a coloration efficiency of 83.2 cm 2 C⁻ 1 . In pursuit of broader optical modulation capabilities, we further innovated by developing a multilayer porous film strategy, enabling precise control over thickness through repeated spin-coating/heating cycles. Remarkably, a three-layer configuration achieved an extraordinary optical modulation of up to 87.2%, ranking among the best performances reported in the electrochromic field. This novel methodology paves the way for expedited manufacturing of porous amorphous metal oxide films and positions the enhanced WO 3 film as a highly promising candidate for advanced electrochromic technologies. Interfacial polarization has been proved to significantly contribute to the effective absorption of electromagnetic waves (EMW). However, a model that clearly defines the contribution of interfacial polarization has yet to be developed. In this work, a layer of WO 3 was introduced within the WS 2 /PPy nanocomposites by oxidation to create a heterojunction interface, resulting in the formation of a WS 2 /WO 3 /PPy nanocomposite material. The experiments demonstrated that interfacial engineering could significantly enhance the electromagnetic wave absorption capability of the material. The WS 2 /WO 3 /PPy composite achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −58.87 dB at a thickness of 3.3 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.72 GHz at a thickness of 2.3 mm. This work clarifies the impact of interfacial polarization on EMW absorption, providing a feasible approach for designing novel, high-efficiency EMW absorbing materials.
