Highly efficient hydrogenation of levulinic acid into 2-methyltetrahydrofuran over Ni–Cu/Al2O3–ZrO2 bifunctional catalysts

Zhenbing Xie,Bingfeng Chen,Haoran Wu,Mingyang Liu,Huizhen Liu,Jianling Zhang,Guanying Yang,Buxing Han

Transformation of biomass or biomass-based feedstocks into fuels or valuable chemicals is of great importance for the sustainable development of our society. Mesoporous Al2O3–ZrO2 with different Al : Zr molar ratios was prepared by the sol–gel method, and Cu–Ni/Al2O3–ZrO2 catalysts were fabricated by the impregnation method. The catalytic performances of the bifunctional catalysts were studied in the selective hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) into 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF). It was demonstrated that both Cu : Ni and Al : Zr ratios affected the selectivity to MTHF significantly. The bimetallic catalysts Cu–Ni/Al2O3–ZrO2 containing 10 wt% Ni and 10 wt% Cu gave 99.8% MTHF selectivity at full conversion of LA when the Al : Zr ratio was 9 : 1. The outstanding catalytic performance of the catalyst is related to the mesoporous structure, the acidic properties of the support and the synergistic effect between Cu and Ni. The catalyst could be reused five times without a considerable loss of catalytic activity and selectivity.

Hierarchical ZrO2@N-doped carbon nano-networks anchored ultrafine Pd nanoparticles for highly efficient catalytic hydrogenation

Pu Chun,Li Rui-Dong,Chang Gang-Gang,Chen Min-Jie,Yao Yao,Li Jun-Sheng,Zhao Bo,Wu Lu,Zhang Yue-Xing,Yang Xiao-Yu

Carbon supported metal catalysts have received considerable interest due to their widespread applications in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the controllable synthesis of carbon support with defined morphology and composition still represents great challenging. Herein, we reported the synthesis of a well-defined hierarchically nanosized H-ZrO 2 /NC (nitrogen-doped carbon) network via an inheritable carbonization strategy. When immobilizing the palladium clusters into the support, the N-doped sites and oxygen vacancy of the carbon composite can effectively stabilize and activate Pd through strong metal-support interaction which was also confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the hierarchically nanosized network can contribute to the exposure of active sites and facilitate the mass transfer during the catalytic process. As a result, benefiting from the hierarchical structure, composition and hydrolytic nature, Pd@H-ZrO 2 /NC exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability towards the hydrogenation of furfural in mild reaction conditions, as well as good universality toward the hydrogenation of a series of unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Influences of powder morphology on the densification and microstructure of a ZrO2-based nanocrystalline glass–ceramic

Le Fu,Lei Li,Yongxin Cheng,Bohan Wang,Hui Wu

Morphology is an important characteristic of raw powder utilized for ceramic sintering but the role of powder morphology is mostly overlooked. In this study, two types of ZrO 2 –SiO 2 powder with different morphologies (fiber and particle) were synthesized by blow spinning and sol–gel method, respectively, followed by direct current electric field-assisted hot pressing (FAHP) to obtain nanocrystalline glass–ceramics (NCGCs). Results showed that the two as-synthesized powders had different pyrolysis behaviors. The two types of as-synthesized powders were amorphous and tetragonal-ZrO 2 nanocrystallites first formed after calcination at 800°C. During FAHP, the particle powder can be densified at a lower temperature than that of the fiber powder, due to the facts that the particle powder showed higher specific surface area and higher densification driving force. The fiber powder was predominately densified by fiber fusion and plastic deformation, whereas the particle powder was densified via particle fusion. Both the two types of powder can be fully densified to obtain ZrO 2 –SiO 2 NCGCs at 1230°C for 4 min. Tetragonal-ZrO 2 nanocrystallites in the NCGCs with particles as raw powder showed higher stability than those in the NCGCs with fibers as raw powder.

Electrochemical synthesis of Pt nanoparticles on ZrO2/MWCNTs hybrid with high electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation

Haoye Wang,Yun Yang,Yihan Ren,Duangui Chen,Jianhong Wei,Lu Wang,Aijuan Xie,Shiping Luo

Zirconia supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZrO 2 /MWCNTs) as carriers was synthesized with hydrothermal method, and then ternary Pt-ZrO 2 /MWCNTs hybrid was prepared by electrodeposition with aims to enhance electron and proton conductivity, specific surface as well as active site, and also oxidize the adsorbed CO on Pt surface and synergistically improve electrocatalytic activity and stability for the oxidation of methanol. The synthetic conditions of Pt-ZrO 2 /MWCNTs, such as mass ratio of ZrO 2 /MWCNTs, deposition cycle of Pt, were screened, respectively. The catalytic performance of Pt-ZrO 2 /MWCNTs hybrid for methanol oxidation was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperogram test. The results showed that Pt-ZrO 2 /MWCNTs hybrid exhibited significantly lower charge transfer resistance and better toxicity resistance compared with the commercial Pt/C(20 wt%)-SA. Meanwhile, the ECSA (42.25 m 2 /g) of Pt-ZrO 2 /MWCNTs hybrid is higher than that of other related materials. Therefore, the as-prepared Pt-ZrO 2 /MWCNTs hybrid is a promising electro-catalyst for the application of direct methanol fuel cell.

Pd on anionic conductive ZrO2 for low-concentration methane oxidation: Synergetic effect of plasma and catalysis

Mengling Dong,Tao Li,Jiacheng Xu,Tiantian Zhang,Yan Sun,Ning Li,Zuliang Wu,Jing Li,Erhao Gao,Jiali Zhu,Shuiliang Yao,Yong Huang

Methane (CH 4 ) is the second largest greenhouse gas; its emission should be controlled. A plasma reactor coupled with a catalyst was used to control CH 4 emission via oxidation. Compared with the traditional catalytic process, the activity of Pd/ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst is significantly improved, the light-off temperature ( T 50 ) is at a level of 290 °C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization results proved that synergetic effect of plasma and catalysis on CH 4 oxidation was due to the increase in the amount of lattice oxygen on zirconia after plasma oxidation and the enhancement of the oxidation of Pd 0 to PdO on 1.0Pd/10ZrO 2 /γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst. An operando plasma diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy mass spectrometer was used to demonstrate that CH 4 oxidation on Pd/ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst. It was found that 1.0Pd/10ZrO 2 /γ-Al 2 O 3 with plasma can efficiently promote CH 4 oxidation and convert surface formate and carbonate to gaseous CO 2 and H 2 O. The plasma-generated O atoms can react with surface H 2 O to yield reactive OH radicals which can obviously improve CH 4 oxidation at a temperature higher than 130 °C, this finding provides important enlightenment for the development of catalysts for plasma catalytic oxidation of CH 4 . The mechanism of CH 4 plasma-catalysis oxidation was discussed.

One-pot synthesis of MoO3-ZrO2 solid acid catalyst for solvent-free solketal production from glycerol

Hong Huang,Jinglin Mu,Manfen Liang,Ruirui Qi,Mei Wu,Leilei Xu,Haimei Xu,Jinping Zhao,Jin Zhou,Zhichao Miao

Glycerol acetalization to solketal is a promising method of increasing the additional value of glycerol, which is a by-product in biodiesel industry. In this work, a series of mesoporous x-MoO 3 -ZrO 2 ( x  = Mo/Zr) solid acid catalysts with controllable Mo contents were designed and synthesized for the acetalization of glycerol. As important influence factors of solid acid catalysts, the mesoporous structure and existential state of Mo species were systematically investigated. Results show that Mo species were introduced as planned and existed in a homogeneously dispersed state in MoO 3 -ZrO 2 materials. The acidic properties of MoO 3 -ZrO 2 were explored through NH 3 -TPD and pyridine-chemisorbed FT-IR spectroscopy, and the formation of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Given their excellent acidity, MoO 3 -ZrO 2 catalysts were employed for the acetal reaction of glycerol. Among the tested catalysts, the 20 %-MoO 3 -ZrO 2 catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic performance and reusability, achieving a conversion of 89 % for glycerol and a selectivity of 97 % for solketal. Consequently, MoO 3 -ZrO 2 is a green solid acid catalyst with promising applications in solvent-free solketal production from glycerol.

Molten Salt Synthesis and Upconversion of Cubic ZrO2 Submicron Phosphors for Temperature Sensor and Anticounterfeit Applications

Yang Lu,Yixin Ma,Jiang Zhu,Hongyu Lu,Hua Zou

Zirconia (ZrO2) is an excellent host material in the luminescent materials field because of its low phonon energy. Nevertheless, owing to a very high melting point of 2715 °C, preparation of cubic ZrO2 by the solid-state reaction must be done at high temperatures (>1400 °C). Here, we report a molten salt method (MSS) process to obtain rare earth-doped cubic ZrO2 phosphors in an air environment at 1200 °C, which has a relatively low preparation temperature with submicrometer size and fine control over the crystal morphology. Consequently, we successfully synthesized upconverting multicolor ZrO2 submicron phosphors by tuning the activators with a Yb3+ sensitizer under 980 nm excitation. Additionally, the submicron phosphors exhibit multifunctional applications, notably in temperature sensor and anticounterfeiting fields.

A wear and heat-resistant hydrophobic fluoride-free coating based on modified nanoparticles and waterborne-modified polyacrylic resin

Bin Yu,Huicong Liu,Haining Chen,Weiping Li,Liqun Zhu,Weitao Liang

Hydrophobic coatings have attracted extensive research due to their broad application prospects. However, hydrophobic coatings in practical applications are often limited by their insufficient stability and are difficult to be applied on a large scale. In this regard, wear and heat resistance are key aspects that must be considered. In this paper, a method for preparing a robust hydrophobic coating with modified ZrO2 particles as the core component and modified acrylic resin is proposed. First, γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was used to silanize ZrO2 to obtain Si–ZrO2 nanoparticles, which were grafted with amino groups. Then, the nanoparticles reacted with isocyanates to be grafted with hydrophobic groups. A simple spray method was developed to deposit a hydrophobic (141.8°) coating using the mixture containing the modified nanoparticles and non-fluorinated water-based silicon-modified acrylic resin (WSAR) that was prepared by free radical polymerization. The obtained coating exhibited a rough surface and the particles and resin were closely combined. Compared with pure resin coating, the composite coating exhibited 150% enhancement in wear resistance and it could wear 45 meters at a pressure of 20 kPa. Moreover, the coating could maintain the hydrophobic property even when it lost 70% quality or after it was heated at 390 °C. The thermogravimetric results showed that the temperature could reach 400 °C before the quality of the fluorine-free coating dropped to 90%. In addition, the coating could easily take away graphite or silicon carbide powder under the impact of water droplets, showing excellent self-cleaning performance.

The in-situ fabrication of metal sites and distinct oxygen vacancies over the Ni-ZrO2 deoxygenation catalyst

Yaru Xue,Zehui Ma,Nan Yang,Yu Gao,Xiaoxuan Yin,Furang Li,Yifeng Chen,Jiangcheng Li,Yuchao Lyu,Xinmei Liu

The deoxygenation of natural oils is the most mature technology for bio-aviation fuel production. The Ni-ZrO 2 catalyst has been widely researched for the deoxygenation reaction whose catalytic behavior is largely determined by Ni dispersion and oxygen vacancy (Ov) concentration. However, few studies succeed in controlling these two critical factors simultaneously, which hinders further improvement in performance. Herein, an in-situ grinding synthesis method was developed for simultaneous doping of Ni 2+ into ZrO 2 lattice to generate more Ov (O V -Ni-ZrO 2 ) and fabrication of dispersed Ni nanoparticles over the Ni-ZrO 2 catalyst. It involved grinding of nickel source and ZrO 2 precursors followed by crystallization, thus avoiding extra solvents. DFT calculations indicate that doping of Ni 2+ promotes formation of O V -Ni-ZrO 2 which exhibits stronger adsorption capacity toward fatty acid ester and oxygen-containing intermediates than those on pure ZrO 2 (O V -ZrO 2 ). Besides, more Ov-Ni-ZrO 2 interface species and basic (acid) sites are generated over the Ni-ZrO 2 catalyst. The deoxygenation of methyl laurate (ML) proceeds through hydrogenolysis of ML into CH 4 and lauric acid followed by decarbonylation to alkanes. The synergetic effect between dispersed Ni and abundant O V endows the Ni-ZrO 2 catalyst with complete conversion and C 9 -C 12 alkanes yield of 93.2 % in deoxygenation of ML, outperforming the impregnated counterpart significantly.

High-entropy R2O3-Y2O3-TiO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 glasses with ultrahigh hardness, Young's modulus, and indentation fracture toughness.

Yongchang Guo,Jianqiang Li,Ying Zhang,Shaowei Feng,Hong Sun

Glasses with high hardness, high Young's modulus, and high fracture toughness become crucial materials which are urgently needed in the protective covers for various electronic displays. Here, a paradigm is presented that the conceptual design of high-entropy materials is adaptable to high performance oxide glasses. We designed the multi-component glass compositions of 18.77R 2 O 3 -4.83Y 2 O 3 -28.22TiO 2 -8.75ZrO 2 -39.43Al 2 O 3 (R = La, Sm, Gd) and elaborated successfully the glassy samples through a containerless solidification process. The as-prepared samples demonstrated the outstanding mechanical and optical properties. The measured hardness, Young's modulus, and indentation fracture toughness of the high-entropy (R = Gd) glass are 12.58 GPa, 177.9 GPa, and 1.52 MPa·m 0.5 , respectively, in which the hardness and Young's modulus exhibit the highest value among the reported oxide glasses. Structural analysis revealed that the excellent mechanical properties are attributed to the large dissociation energies and the high field strength of Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , and ZrO 2 and the complex interaction between atoms caused by high entropy.

Ultrastrong, Superelastic, and Lamellar Multiarch Structured ZrO2–Al2O3 Nanofibrous Aerogels with High-Temperature Resistance over 1300 °C

Xinxin Zhang,Fei Wang,Lvye Dou,Xiaota Cheng,Yang Si,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Advanced ceramic aerogel materials with a performance combining sufficient mechanical robustness and splendid high-temperature resistance are urgently needed as thermal insulators in harsh environments. However, the practical applications of ceramic aerogel materials are always limited by poor mechanical performance and degradation under thermal shock. Here, we report the facile creation of lamellar multiarch structured ceramic nanofibrous aerogels that are simultaneously ultrastrong, superelastic, and high temperature resistant by combining ZrO2–Al2O3 nanofibers with Al(H2PO4)3 matrices. The resulting ZrO2–Al2O3 nanofibrous aerogels exhibit the integrated properties of rapid recovery from a strain of 90%, high compression strength of more than 1100 kPa (at a strain of 90%), high fatigue resistance, and temperature-invariant superelasticity. Moreover, the all-ceramic component feature also provides the ceramic nanofibrous aerogels with high-temperature resistance up to 1300 °C and thermal insulation performance with low thermal conductivity (0.0322 W m–1 K–1). These superior performances make the ceramic aerogels ideal for high-temperature thermal insulation materials in extreme conditions.

Enhanced catalytic activity and thermal stability by highly dispersed Pd-based nanocatalysts embedded in ZrO2 hollow spheres

Liu Tianli,Zhang Jian,Xu Mingjie,Tian Chuanjin,Wang Chang-An

Sintering resistant noble metal nanoparticles are critical to the development of advanced catalysts with high activity and stability. Herein, we reported the construction of highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles loaded at the inner wall of ZrO 2 hollow spheres (Pd@HS-ZrO 2 ), which shows improved activity and thermal stability over references in the Pd-ZrO 2 (catalyst-support) system. Even after 800 °C high temperature calcination, the Pd nanoparticles and ZrO 2 hollow spheres did not undergo morphological changes. The Pd@HS-ZrO 2 manifests batter catalytic activity and thermal stability than the counterpart Pd/ZrO 2 catalysts. In comparison to Pd/ZrO 2 -800, Pd@ZrO 2 -800 exhibits a 25°C reduction in the temperature required for complete conversion of CO. The enhanced catalytic activity and thermal stability of Pd@HS-ZrO 2 can be attributed to the nanoconfinement effect offered by the 10 nm wall thickness of the ZrO 2 hollow spheres, which suppresses the coarsening of the Pd nanoparticles (active center for catalysis).
