Highly Selectivity Molecularly Imprinted Fluorescence Sensor Based on Carbon Quantum Dots for the Determination of Anthraquinones

Li Yangyang,Qiu Xiuzhen,Wang Yulin,Guo Huishi,Nie Libo

Due to the complexity of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), it is very important to develop a method that can recognize anthraquinones, the active ingredients in TCMs, with high selectivity. Here, a molecularly imprinted fluorescence sensor was coated on the surface of carbon quantum dots (CDs). Allobarbital was used as functional monomer for this application using theoretical calculations and was successfully synthesized and characterized. The template molecule chrysophanol was combined with the functional monomer allobarbital using a hydrogen bond array. Then, a series of adsorption experiments were performed to study the specific recognition of anthraquinones by the prepared sensors. The results showed that the prepared sensor had a good linear response to concentrations of chrysophanol in the concentration range 0.5 mg · L-1 to 8.0 mg · L-1, a low detection limit (5.0 μg · L-1), high stability, and a short response time (20 min). Additionally, the obtained fluorescence sensor was successfully applied to selectively recognize anthraquinones in TCMs with recoveries of 90.1% to 101.7%. The prepared sensor displays excellent sensitivity and high selectivity towards anthraquinones, mainly due to the specific hydrogen binding sites for the target molecules. Overall, this fluorescence sensor can selectively recognize anthraquinones in TCMs, and provide a method for quality monitoring and rational utilization of TCMs.

Sacrificial 3D printing to fabricate MXene-based wearable sensors with tunable performance

Amr Osman,Hui Liu,Jian Lu

Wearable sensors are becoming a vital element of newly developed smart devices for their significant prospects in health monitoring, motion detection, and human–machine interactions. Introducing a cost-effective strategy to fabricate pressure sensors with high sensitivity, compressibility, recoverability, and linearity, while also maintaining control over the structure, is a challenge in the development of scalable and high-performance wearable devices. Herein, a fused deposition modelling (FDM)-assisted dip coating is performed to fabricate highly porous pressure sensors with gyroid topologies derived from 3D-printed sacrificial molds. A layer-by-layer dip coating is proposed to obtain a uniform conductive layer over elastomer-based scaffolds using negatively and positively charged MXene nanosheets. The porous sensor based on the self-assembled MXene demonstrates a high sensitivity (9.859 kPa −1 ) in an extensive linearity range of up to 50 kPa, negligible hysteresis, and good stability up to 1750 cycles. Additionally, the sensor exhibits high temperature sensitivity (4.349 % °C −1 ) with superb linearity (up to 100 °C). The distinctive sensing and deformation mechanisms are elucidated in detail using in situ SEM and finite element analysis. By tuning the lattice structure of the sensors, the pressure sensitivities can be significantly improved to 34.43 kPa −1 and 84.47 kPa −1 within the pressure ranges of 12–34 kPa and 34–55 kPa, respectively. The gyroid-derived pressure sensor exhibits promising potential in diverse applications, including pulse rate monitoring, phonation, and motion activities. A 4 × 4 sensor array is assembled to provide real-time spatial pressure mapping. Furthermore, the wearability of the sensor can be tailored to introduce user-specific products.

Flexible wearable/stickable ammonia colorimetric sensors with assistance of deep learning for ammonia leakage monitoring and early warning

Yuling Mao,Dongzhi Zhang,Hao Zhang,Yajing Chen,Wenzheng An,Chang Niu,Jiahui Shao

Detection and monitoring of ammonia is of great importance in modern industry and environmental protection. In this study, a colorimetric sensing system that is highly sensitive, accurate, adaptable and capable of real-time monitoring of ammonia leakage was developed. An ammonia colorimetric sensor was formed by electrostatically spinning a bromocresol green/polylactic acid nanofibrous membrane deposited on a stretchable adherent nonwoven fabric. The sensor is capable of observing a clear color change with the naked eye at 1 ppm-110 ppm, changing from yellow to blue as the ammonia concentration increases, being stable for more than 6 weeks, and remaining intact for a long time at 60 °C, with the response remaining linear and stable under different humidity tests. The sensor has excellent tensile properties and maintains a stable response after 400 tensile cycles. The system is based on deep learning algorithm and real-time analysis of images to realize the monitoring of ammonia concentration. The results show that the response/recovery time of the sensor is 9 s/7 min, and based on the self-recovery characteristics and long-term stability of the sensor, long-term monitoring and warning can be realized. In addition, we validated the colorimetric sensing system for detecting real-time changes in ammonia concentration in a simulated gas leak. In summary, this work provides effective, rapid, real-time monitoring and early warning of ammonia leakage in hazardous chemical environments.

Jinfeng Yan,Yanan Ma,Xingxing Li,Chuankun Zhang,Minglei Cao,Wei Chen,Shijun Luo,Meng Zhu,Yihua Gao

Due to the portability, good flexibility and excellent sensing performance, flexible piezoresistive sensors have received great attention in the field of transient electronic skin, intelligent robots and human-machine interaction. However, achieving both high sensitivity and wide sensing range by low-cost and large-scale method still remains a key challenge for developing high performance piezoresistive sensors. Here, a flexible and highly sensitive piezoresistive sensor was designed and realized by combining the 2D MXene material with wrinkle structure. The MXene composite based sensor with wrinkle structure was fabricated by spraying the active material onto the surface of a pre-stretched polyacrylate tape, which is facile, efficient and low-cost. The MXene composite based sensor demonstrates high sensitivity (148.26 kPa −1 ), wide pressure range (up to 16 kPa), short response time (120 ms) and excellent durability (>13000 cycles). Moreover, benefiting from the extraordinary sensing performance and flexibility, the sensor can detect human physiological signals, monitor intelligent robot postures and map spatial pressure distributions, thus exhibiting great potential in physiological analysis systems, humanoid robotics and biomedical prostheses.

Portable Paper-Based Sensing Platform for Rapid and Simultaneous Measurement of Environmental pH and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus

Yuanyuan Lu,Tingting Ma,Menghuan Zhang,Qingwen Lan,Jiao Yang,Xinqiang Liang

Accurate detection of bioavailable phosphorus (BP) is critical to mitigate freshwater eutrophication from excess phosphorus, but quantifying trace soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) under real-world pH remains challenging. We present a portable paper-based electrochemical sensor for simultaneous SRP and pH monitoring in agricultural water. The platform establishes dual linear correlations: peak current–SRP concentration (LOD < 2 μM) and peak potential–pH (1–7) via square wave voltammetry (SWV). This enables micromolar-level SRP quantification across an environmentally relevant pH range with minimal interference. Field validation in farmland solutions demonstrates direct differentiation of dissolved and colloidal phosphorus fractions without pH alteration, overcoming the limitations of conventional methods. This work provides a powerful tool for in situ environmental monitoring, offering new insights into P bioavailability and advancing sustainable nutrient management in diverse agricultural contexts.

Wireless, Multisensor Integrated Bioelectronics for Real-Time Monitoring and Assessment of Muscle Atrophy

Shuai Zhang,Shuo Meng,Renjie Tan,Ke Zhang,Zhuang Wang,Xiaoyun Xu,Chuanwei Zhi,Xinshuo Liang,Jinlian Hu

Real-time monitoring and evaluation of muscle atrophy are vital for efficient treatment and effective diagnosis. Although some systems have been developed to monitor loss of muscle mass or strength, they are bulky and nonspecific, cannot be applied to the body, and cannot assess the degree of muscle atrophy. Our research focuses on developing a wireless multisensor wearable system (WMWS) for on-body monitoring and assessment of atrophy, which utilizes a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (S-TENG) and electrochemical creatinine (CREA) sensor to achieve real-time acquisition of plantar pressure and interstitial fluid (ISF) CREA concentration. In addition, LSTM (long short-term memory) and SVM (support vector machine) machine learning (ML) algorithms also prove that our multisensor strategy can effectively improve the recognition rate of different degrees of atrophy (the highest accuracy reached 92.32%). Overall, our work makes it possible to monitor and grade muscle atrophy remotely in real time.

A High-Sensitive PDMS-Based sensor with a Wide Sensing Range by fabricating refined and reconstructable conductive network

Shuaishuai Zhou,Huanhuan Zhang,Qian Chen,Qing-wen Yuan,Sen-hao Zhang,Nannan Bao,Jin-Ping Qu

Flexible and stretchable sensors are increasingly being developed to conformally attach to skin or organs for monitoring human activity. However, due to agglomerations of nanofiller, the preparation of a strain sensor for conductive elastic polymer with high sensitivity and wide detection range remains a major challenge. Herein, a conductive network is refined in PDMS/MWCNTs composites using an   elongational flow field. This well-formed 3D MWCNTs network endows the nanocomposite with a high sensitivity and wide detection range for strain deformation. Moreover, it exhibits excellent recovery and reconstruction capabilities during strain deformation, ensuring exceptional cyclic stability for the sensing material. In particular, the fabricated composite (4 wt% MWCNTs) with good tensile strength (8.1 MPa), exhibits high sensitivity (1151), a wide detection range exceeding 200 % strain, and good stable performance over 2000 stretch-release cycles under 30 % strain. Consequently, the strain sensor made from PDMS/MWCNTs composites can detect subtle actions and larger joint movements, exhibiting a good discriminative ability. In addition, the sensor is successfully applied to detect and recognize human lifting movements based on a big data model, highlighting the potential application in smart wearable devices. This work presents a new strategy for obtaining a highly sensitive PDMS-based sensor with a wide sensing range for human motion detection by fabricating an optimized conductive network.

A hemin/rGO/MWCNT nanocomposite-based dual signal electrochemical aptasensor for sensitive detection of NSE

Huyue Wei,Mingzhu Yang,Chengshuai Huang,Xiaojie Yue,Jiabin Cai,Xinyi Wang,Kai Fan,Linxi Dong,Gaofeng Wang,Dujuan Li

Neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a tumor marker of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), has high application value in the early diagnosis of SCLC. In this study, a dual signal electrochemical aptasensor for NSE was constructed based on hemin/reduced graphene oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube (H–rGO–MWCNT) nanocomposites. Hemin played a dual role, functioning not only as an in situ electrochemical probe but also exhibiting excellent peroxidase-like properties, effectively catalyzing the electroreduction of H2O2. Reduced graphene oxide and multi-walled carbon nanotubes exhibited excellent conductivity. Through their binding with hemin, the nanocomposites achieved a larger specific surface area, providing numerous active sites for capturing the NSE aptamer. In the presence of NSE, the specific adsorption between the antigen and the aptamer formed a stable antigen–aptamer structure, which inhibited the performance of hemin, resulting in the weakening of the electrochemical signals of hemin and H2O2. Leveraging these characteristics, the sensitive and cost-effective dual-signal electrochemical aptasensor has been fabricated for the detection of NSE. One signal corresponded to differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of hemin, while the other signal was derived from chronoamperometry, capturing the catalytic reduction of H2O2. The linear ranges for NSE were 1 pg mL−1 to 1 μg mL−1 and 100 pg mL−1 to 100 ng mL−1 with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.21 pg mL−1 and 11.22 pg mL−1 by DPV and chronoamperometry, respectively. In addition, this aptasensor exhibited good reproducibility, stability and specificity. The recovery of NSE in human blood serum samples was from 89% to 131%. It provided a promising strategy for the detection of NSE in clinical diagnostics.

A Wearable Sensor Based on Gold Nanowires/Textile and Its Integrated Smart Glove for Motion Monitoring and Gesture Expression

Zhiqi Zhao,Qiujin Li,Yu Dong,Jixian Gong,Zheng Li,Xiran Qiao,Jianfei Zhang

Nowadays, flexible piezoresistive sensors have drawn considerable attention in e-skin, motion monitoring devices, etc. Wearability is an important nature of various flexible sensors. Herein, a sensitive flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor with gold nanowires (AuNWs) combined textile with high sensitivity and durability is presented. The knitted cotton fabric is used as the matrix for loading conductive material AuNWs to fabricate the wearable pressure sensors as clothing components. Cotton fabric can be easily transformed into conductive textile due to impregnation and combination with AuNWs. This AuNWs/textile material is demonstrated to be an appropriate flexible sensor to monitor various human motions, such as finger pressing, joints bending, and foot status. A smart glove is integrated with this AuNWs/textile as the sensing block for gesture expression and recognition, signal reading, and transmission. Besides the common gesture with finger movement combination, e.g., numbers, the simple AuNWs/textile-based smart glove can also serve for expressing some emoji symbol and be considered as a human–machine interface for some gesture emoji used in internet social platform. This AuNWs/textile is expected to be used as a practical wearable sensor with great potential for extensive applications, including human–machine interface, healthcare monitoring, and the Internet of Things construction.

Visual detection of S2− with a paper-based fluorescence sensor coated with CdTe quantum dots via headspace sampling

Yi Pan,Zheng Fang,Hanjiao Chen,Zhou Long,Xiandeng Hou

A simple method was developed in this work for facile and visual detection of S 2− using a paper-based fluorescence (FL) sensor coated with CdTe quantum dots (QDs) by headspace sampling. With the addition of hydrochloric acid, the target S 2− in the liquid phase would transform to H 2 S, which was released to headspace and quenched the FL of CdTe QDs in a linear manner through a gas–solid reaction, with any possible liquid-phase interference avoided. The regular quenching caused by S 2− in analyte solution with increased concentration could be easily observed by the naked eye, and the limit of detection (LOD) for this method was 0.13 μM and 0.93 μM for FL and visual sensing, respectively, comparable or not to that by other sensing probes. A relative standard deviation of 1.2% was accomplished from seven replicated measurements, implying the high reproducibility, and the recovery for the spiked water samples ranging from 94 to 103%, and illustrating the satisfactory reliability of this method. Moreover, the preparation of this paper sensor was facile and did not require any complicated or time-consuming procedures for additional modification or functionalization as for other probes previously reported.

Highly Conductive, Stretchable, Adhesive, and Self-Healing Polymer Hydrogels for Strain and Pressure Sensor

Chunying Yang,Jialin Yin,Zhuo Chen,Haishun Du,Minghua Tian,Miaomiao Zhang,Jinxin Zheng,Lan Ding,Pengfei Zhang,Xinyu Zhang,Kuilin Deng

Retractable, self-healing, and conductive hydrogels are widely used as adjustable and wearable sensing materials. Herein, using polyfunctional trypan blue (TB) as a crosslinking agent for both poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polypyrrole (PPy), a retractable and self-healing PAA-TB-PPy hydrogel is prepared. The introduction of TB not only improves the water retention capacity of the hydrogel but also helps form a highly interconnected conductive path. It is found that PAA-TB-PPy hydrogel shows a high electrical conductivity (15 S m −1 ) which is almost equivalent to the pure PPy hydrogel. Due to the high stability of the semi-interpenetrating network structure, the elongation at break of PAA-TB-PPy hydrogel is more than 750%, along with high mechanical strength and strong adhesion to a variety of solid surfaces. In addition, the hydrogel exhibits high strain and pressure sensitivity with prominent linearity. Importantly, the as-prepared hydrogel sensor can reliably detect both repetitive large strain and subtle vibration, which makes it a great candidate as wearable electronics for human motion monitoring.

Flexible freestanding graphene paper-based potentiometric enzymatic aptasensor for ultrasensitive wireless detection of kanamycin

Yao Yao,Chengmei Jiang,Jianfeng Ping

Flexible sensing devices have drawn tremendous attention in the past decades due to their potential applications in future hand-held, potable consumer, and wearable electronics . Here, we firstly developed an ultrasensitive wireless potentiometric aptasensor based on flexible freestanding graphene paper for kanamycin detection. Flexible graphene paper made from a simple vacuum filtration method was used as a biocompatible platform for effective immobilization of aptamer. A nuclease-assisted amplification strategy was introduced into this potentiometric biosensing system in order to significantly improve the detection sensitivity through a classic catalytic recycling reaction of target induced by the nuclease (DNase I). As expected, an ultra-low detection limit of 30.0 fg/mL for kanamycin was achieved. Furthermore, the developed potentiometric enzymatic aptasensor exhibits high selectivity , favorable flexibility, excellent stability and reproducibility, which holds great promising for its routine sensing application.
