Firefighting clothing provides essential safeguards for firefighters while engaging in fire suppression and life rescue operations. However, the inability to actively detect hazardous gas and self-thermal degradation of conventional firefighting clothing induce critical safety threats to firefighters. Herein, we design a dual-mode perceptual sensor via programmable assembly of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@MoS 2 nanocomposite in dual-mode triaxial structural aerogel fiber (DM-TSF) for both selective NH 3 and temperature monitoring. The DM-TSF is prepared through triaxial wet spinning, with an alternating p / n -type thermoelectric (TE) core, a signal decoupling aramid nanofibers layer, and an NH 3 sensing outer sheath. The TE core is composed of alternately interconnected p -type/SWCNT and n -type SWCNT/Polyethyleneimine, which exhibits high TE efficiency (8.44 μV K −1 for p -segment, 7.44 μV K −1 for n -segment) and wide-range (10–500 °C) temperature monitoring in DM-TSF. Furthermore, the abundant adsorption sites and high-density Schottky heterojunctions of the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@MoS 2 nanocomposite in the outer sheath enabled DM-TSF to exhibit an outstanding sensitivity (3.14% ppm −1 @20 ppm) and high selectivity for NH 3 . A portable wireless system based on DM-TSF was further developed and integrated into firefighting clothing for temperature and NH 3 monitoring, triggering alarms within 2 s and 28 s, respectively. This work sheds new light on the fabrication of intelligent multiplex hazard detection fibers that can respond to multi-hazard elements, thereby enhancing firefighters’ safety in complex fire scenarios. Multimodal sensing in thermomechanically coupled environments, such as lithium–ion battery monitoring, remains constrained by inter-modal interference and low sensitivity to environmental changes. This work presents a decoupling strategy using a modulus-heterogeneous “rotating square” auxetic structure to vertically separate a thermoresistive temperature sensor array from a piezoelectric strain sensor array. This design near-perfectly eliminates thermo-mechanical crosstalk, enabling simultaneous detection of subtle thermal and mechanical variations over a wide temperature range. Specifically, the rigid regions of the auxetic structure rotate under tensile strain to isolate the temperature sensors from deformation, while the stretchable regions expand laterally to enhance in-plane strain in the potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-based piezoelectric layer, compensating for its intrinsically low d 31 coefficient. Benefiting from this architecture, the thermoresistive sensor provides stable, independent responses from 25 to 130 °C with 0.1 °C resolution. Simultaneously, the first developed piezoelectric unit, based on a lead-free KNN ceramic framework, achieves 100% stretchability and reliably detects surface protrusions as small as 5 µm without thermal interference. When deployed on a pouch-cell battery, the sensor array reliably detects both overheating and swelling, offering a compact and robust dual-parameter sensing solution with strong potential for structural health monitoring in complex environments.

Multi-shelled hollow structures have been drawing wide attention in various fields because of their large surface area , short diffusion path and less agglomerated configuration. Herein, ZnSnO 3 hollow microspheres with controllable shell numbers have been prepared by a facile solvothermal reaction and following annealing treatment. The test results show that multi-shelled ZnSnO 3 hollow microspheres exhibit excellent acetone sensing performance, which is superior than that of double-shelled samples. In particular, multi-shelled ZnSnO 3 hollow microspheres not only show high responses of 105.1 and rapid response/recovery speed (1/18 s) to 100 ppm acetone, but also exhibit good repeatability, long-term stability and anti-humidity properties. Furthermore, they can easily distinguish healthy breath from simulated diabetic breath. And they still show rapid response/recovery speed in actual breath detection, which is beneficial to the achievement of real-time detection. The enhanced sensing performance has been studied systematically. Thus, multi-shelled ZnSnO 3 hollow microspheres have a great potential for the diagnosis of diabetes.

The realization of flexible pressure sensors that could mimic the perception functions of human skin (touch, temperature, and humidity) is important for development of electronic skin. However, the design and preparation of highly sensitive sensors for multifunctional sensing of pressure, temperature and humidity remains a challenge. Here, we first designed and prepared a flexible starch/polyacrylamide (PAM) double-network hydrogel, with additional introduction of Na+ and Cl− to further enhance the electrical properties. Subsequently, a multifunctional pressure sensor was fabricated by sandwiching a microstructured starch-based hydrogel into two flexible AgNWs electrodes. In the test run, the prepared sensor exhibited a high sensitivity of 48.35 kPa−1, a fast response time of 11 ms, and remarkable mechanical stability (>3000 cycles). Given the satisfactory performance for pressure sensing, we demonstrated the ability of the sensor to monitor various human dynamics. Moreover, the starch-based hydrogel was further developed as a flexible temperature and humidity sensor for its water absorption and swelling properties. In particular, the asynchrony of pressure, temperature and humidity strains (straining to stability at 11 ms, 2 s and 10 s, respectively) resulted in the automatic separation of different electrical signals. The intuitive interpretation of the data without involving complex parameter separation calculations allowed the starch-based hydrogels to be developed as an integrated, multifunctional sensor of pressure, temperature and humidity with high sensitivity and flexibility. The above properties suggest that the prepared bio-based hydrogels may provide a new solution for the prospect of green and multifunctional electronic skin development.

Resistive-type polyaniline (PANI) based sensing film was fabricated by a simple in-situ polymerization method with graphene (GP) as additives on flexible porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. The fabricated flexible GP-PANI/PVDF membrane demonstrates a multi-hierarchical porous microstructure, enhancing its sensing performance towards ammonia (NH 3 ). The optimized GP-PANI/PVDF sensor shows 60% response towards 1 ppm NH 3 with a response time of 46 s, and 10% response towards 0.1 ppm NH 3 at 24℃, respectively. Moreover, the GP-PANI/PVDF sensor presents excellent flexibility, exhibiting only small response values’ difference upon several bending angles and after 1500 bending/extending cycles. Besides, the GP-PANI/PVDF sensor exhibits a strong linear relationship between the NH 3 response values and working temperatures with a range of 24℃∼50℃. The results demonstrate that the flexible GP-PANI/PVDF film sensor holds great promise for the application of portable, lightweight, and room temperature sub-ppm level NH 3 detection devices.

For the important applications of gas identification related to specific diseases in healthcare, flexible gas sensors have attracted more attention. Among them, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have been known as good promising flexible gas-sensitive materials. While how to tightly attach 2D materials on flexible substrates is still challenging. Here, we propose an enhanced room-temperature flexible paper-substrate sensors based on 2D tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) with S defects, which are facilely synthesized by chemical exfoliation and vacuum filtration method. Structure characterization shows that most of the as-prepared 2D WS 2 are within 3 layers. Spectroscopic characterization proves the existence of S defects on the surface of 2D WS 2 produced by chemical exfoliation. The room-temperature (25 °C) NH 3 gas sensitivity results show that the response intensity of 2D WS 2 with rich S defects is nearly three times higher than the highly crystalline 2D WS 2 . The results of the flexible gas sensitivity indicate the fast response and high stability of our devices in breathing detection and bending experiments. Furthermore, the devices can effectively distinguish bending stress changes and gas-sensitive response signals at the same time, realizing multifunctional sensing detection. Our work will be a reference for fabricating flexible sensors based on 2D materials.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials have been extensively used in self-powered temperature sensing devices, especially flexible sensors that require low energy consumption. One of their important features is the flexibility that allows conformal contact with various subjects and tolerance to mechanical deformation. However, realizing both high TE conversion efficiency and excellent flexibility remains a significant challenge. Here, a general method was developed to produce stretchable high-performance TE composites and achieved asymmetric composite thermoelectric materials (ACTE) with high Seebeck coefficient (215 μV·K −1 for n-type, 175 μV·K −1 for p-type). The fully stretchable temperature sensors (FSTS) fabricated from ACTE exhibited good flexibility which could withstand 50 % uniaxial tensile strain and 30 % biaxial strain with low thicknesses (∼650 μm) that allowed for good contact on curved surfaces. The sensitivity of FSTS reached ∼145 μV·K −1 with 18 n/p ACTE pairs and ∼37 μV·K −1 with 2 pairs and could output stable signals regardless of flexural or tensile deformation. The FSTS was also fabricated into an array that could be worn as sensors or electronic skin with temperature sensing and mapping abilities. This work not only produced fully stretchable TE devices but also provided a general method for the fabrication of other high-performance stretchable composites and devices.

As non-contact sensing, non-invasive medical diagnostics and environmental humidity monitoring technologies advance, the demand for high-performance humidity sensors is becoming increasingly apparent. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is an attractive humidity-sensitive candidate due to its excellent chemical activity and hydrophilic surface. However, achieving fast responsiveness and high sensitivity of dynamic changes in humidity is still challenging. Herein, this work introduced a WS 2 -modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite material as humidity sensing material with superior sensing performance. Then sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solution was added to the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/WS 2 composite material to adjust viscosity of the composite material, enabling the formulation of printable humidity-sensitive ink. Utilizing screen-printing technology, a mass-producible humidity sensor (CMXW2) was successfully fabricated. Experimental results show that the sensor has short response and recovery times of 4.65 s/1.33 s in the relative humidity of 11–97 % with a high humidity response of 1707 % and excellent mechanical properties. The efficacy of the humidity sensor for skin moisture monitoring, real-time respiration monitoring, and non-contact switch was also evaluated. The successful demonstration of multi-scenario applications using the CMXW2 humidity sensor opens up new possibilities and applications in the fields of smart healthcare and non-contact sensing.

A highly sensitive and selective optical sensor device based on a porphyrin-coated ZnO thin film/K + ion-exchanged glass composite optical waveguide (COWG) layer was developed. The surface of the ZnO film was coated with a thin film of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin by the spin-coating or immersion method. The optical properties of the films were probed by UV–vis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies. The gas sensing performance was also examined in detail. The high sensitivity, room temperature operation, good selectivity, and reproducibility of the sensor render it a promising candidate for industrial use and in environmental monitoring.

We investigate a high-sensitivity surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor consisting of a Au layer, four-layer MoS2, and monolayer graphene. The numerical simulations, by the transfer matrix method (TMM), demonstrate the sensor has a maximum sensitivity of 282°/RIU, which is approximately 2 times greater than the conventional Au-based SPR sensor. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) indicates that the presence of MoS2film generates a strong surface electric field and enhances the sensitivity of the proposed SPR sensor. In addition, the influence of the number of MoS2layers on the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is investigated by simulations and experiments. In the experiment, MoS2and graphene films are transferred on the Au-based substrate by the PMMA-based wet transfer method, and the fabricated samples are characterized by Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the fabricated sensors with the Kretschmann configuration are used to detect okadaic acid (OA). The okadaic acid–bovine serum albumin bioconjugate (OA-BSA) is immobilized on the graphene layer of the sensors to develop a competitive inhibition immunoassay. The results show that the sensor has a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.18 ng/mL for OA, which is about 22.6 times lower than that of a conventional Au biosensor. We believe that such a high-sensitivity SPR biosensor has potential applications for clinical diagnosis and immunoassays.Keywords:biosensor;MoS2;graphene;SPR sensor;high sensitivity

Conductive hydrogels based on two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, MXene, have emerged as promising materials for flexible wearable sensors. In these applications, the integration of high toughness, ultrastretchability, low hysteresis, self-adhesiveness, and multiple sensory functions into one gel is essential. However, serious issues, such as easy restacking and inevitable oxidation of MXene nanosheets in aqueous media and weak interfacial bindings between MXene and the gel network, make it almost impossible to achieve the multiple performances mentioned above. Here we present a conductive MXene-composited polymer (MCP) hydrogel by incorporating gelatin-modified MXene into polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel for the fabrication of multifunctional sensors. The presence of gelatin not only greatly improves the stability of the MXene nanosheets by forming a protective sheath, but also largely enhances the interfacial interactions between the MXene and the hydrogel network as molecular glues. Thus, the MCP hydrogel exhibits a high strength (430 kPa), remarkable stretchability (1100%), low hysteresis (<10% at 500% cyclic tensile), and excellent repeatable adhesion. The resultant MCP hydrogel-based versatile sensors display a high strain sensitivity with a broad working range (gauge factor (GF) = 8.83, up to 1000%), realizing the detection of various human motions. Moreover, the prepared sensors possess superior thermosensitive capacities (1.110/°C) for the measurement of body temperature. This strategy opens horizons to designing high-performance MXene-based hydrogels for advanced sensing platforms.

Flexible electronics have demonstrated various strategies to enhance the sensory ability for tactile perception and wearable physiological monitoring. Fibrous microstructures have attracted much interest because of their excellent mechanical properties and fabricability. Herein, a structurally robust fibrous mat was first fabricated by electrospinning, followed by a sequential process of functionalization utilizing ultrasonication treatment and in situ polymerization growth. Electrospun polyurethane (PU) microfibers were anchored with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to form conductive paths along each fiber by a scalable ultrasonic cavitation treatment in an MWCNT suspension. After, a layer of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was grown on the surface of PU fibers decorated with MWCNTs to enhance the conductive conjunctions of MWCNTs. Due to the superior electromechanical behaviors and mechanical reinforcement of PEDOT, the PEDOT/MWCNT@PU mat-based device exhibits a wide working range (0–70 kPa), high sensitivity (1.6 kPa −1 ), and good mechanical robustness (over 18,000 cycles). The PEDOT/MWCNT@PU mat-based sensor also demonstrates a good linear response to different temperature variations because of the thermoelectricity of the PEDOT/MWCNT composite. This novel strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional fibrous mats provides a promising opportunity for future applications for high-performance wearable devices.
